If one of your resolutions is to spend less time on your phone, or looking at screens, then you are in the right place, because in this episode we will look at digital detoxes and how you can implement them. To do this, we are speaking with Andrew Selepak, a Social Media Professor at the University of Florida. In this episode we discuss what a digital detox is and what technology it usually involves, how a digital detox can be realistically implemented without it negatively impacting our work, or even social connections, and the parallels between digital detoxes and food diets. Selepak shares why going cold turkey with a digital detox is unlikely to be successful, why vacations are a good setting to implement a partial digital detox, and why turning off notifications and removing social media apps is the best way to start a detox. He also explains why our use of technology shouldn't be seen necessarily as an addiction, like a drug, but a tool that needs to be the correct way. Additionally Selepak shares how a non-self imposed detox from his phone during a trip in Ireland taught him the importance of disconnecting, and how many of us fall into the trap of taking numerous pictures on holiday, with the ambition of posting on social media, instead of experiencing the trip in the present moment. And finally, we discuss the role meditation can play to help limit our time with technology.

Selepak's Tips for Cleaning Up Social Media Profiles:The best way for students to clean up and protect their online presence is to do a regular social media audit. Students should reexamine their Instagram posts, go back through their Twitter posts with Advanced Search, check their TikTok videos, and review their daily Facebook Memories notifications for posts that no longer accurately reflect their reputation or could damage their reputation.Too often we make posts when we are emotional that doesn’t accurately reflect our true views or at least our more articulate and subdued views, or posts we made when we were younger that embarrass us today. While it is always important to pause before making a social media post that might be made in anger or despair, it is just as important to pause and review any old posts that were made under similar emotional distress, or made without thinking. Parents and educators should also remind students that posts made today for likes, comments, and follows, could be the same posts that tomorrow prevent a student from getting a job, internship, or letter of recommendation. The phrases "analysis paralysis" or "writer's block", are very familiar to so many that deal in content creation. This applies to both online and offline content creation. But, here's the truth: Content development and finding seed ideas to get started, begin with YOU (and your team, if you are a larger enterprise). That means accessing the analytical as well as the creative mind. Analytical - in the sense that you must have a goal established, a purpose, and a destination (call to action) that you can track and measure. Creativity - because you cannot just mirror (or worse, copy) what others are doing, but need to come up with ideas and angles that stand out in your market, and that are helpful and unique at the same time. Content creation ideas is what I'm discussing today: https://chaosmap.com/blog/content-creation-ideas-more-organic-traffic/ (The end result is that you'll get more traffic, more authority and brand lift) This broadcast is coming to you from Chapman University in Orange, California (I lectured two sessions on performance marketing - which included analytics, google tag manager, Facebook ads/audiences/pixels and data collection). Thanks again to Professor Niklas Myhr, the "Social Media Professor" and his awesome students for the lunch and invite! No need to over-analyze. Start simple and begin today! :-) --- Interested in getting personally coached by Jon to develop traffic, leads and sales? ➡️ Click here: https://chaosmap.com/talk If you liked this broadcast, please give it a thumbs up

I'm baaaaaacck - and this is a solo episode! So I had some Q&A around my journey planned for today but that’s more questions about entrepreneurship and Gary that now I’ll do next week instead because I was really inspired by something that happened this week. What I want to talk about is actually journey related, but it’s around quitting law and those conversations. I had the honor of speaking this week to Professor Niklas Myhr's Digital marketing class at Chapman University on personal branding and LinkedIn. I spoke last semester and it was an honor to come back this semester. The Professor is known online as "The Social Media Professor" and I actually met him when I was working for Gary in New York when he interned for our team for a week. Not only is he a lovely person, but he really is educated on personal branding and the online space in general. I want to thank him for inviting me to talk, which brings me to what we are talking about this week. It’s interesting to me is just how much has not changed with college students in the last 10 years. If you have access to a smart phone and the internet generally, I truly believe there is no better time to be alive from an opportunities standpoint. You can literally create the life you want and you should take advantage of it. However, I think that message is tougher to deliver when you haven't had real world experience yet. If I was sitting in that class - how would I have received my own message... And so I wanted to talk about that early part of my journey.. How I knew law wasn't for me and the tough conversations with myself and others I had to have. Bottom line: You have to do what it takes to make you happy! Is life working in a PR agency as glamorous as Hollywood portrays it on television and in movies? The truth is, working in an agency can be exciting, but it also can be exhausting, and not for every PR soul. This week, we consider the ups and downs of PR agency life with Dr. Gina Luttrell, a PR and Social Media Professor at Syracuse University, and co-author of a new book, The PR Agency Handbook. We’ll explore the agency-client relationship, discuss the book’s included client personas, and find out whether Gina recommends agency work to her budding PR wards. Our second guest, Rob Biesenbach, preaches the lessons of improv comedy to agency managers and other PR leaders, sharing an approach based on a four-letter word – love. The Flack Pack wraps up its coverage from the PRSA International Conference this week with an episode about PR agencies. Dr. Gina Luttrell The PR Agency Handbook Syracuse University S.I. Is it possible that university curriculum can keep up with the ever-changing speed of social media? My guest today believes so, with a lot of coffee and commitment. In this episode, Dr. Karen Freberg discusses life as a social media professor, from developing lesson plans to partnerships with companies like General Motors and Louisville Bats to Hootsuite and Adobe. From personal brand to event media, Jane Barkley – founder and CEO of IM@Events – is a powerhouse of marketing talents. Jane joins Alan in this episode of AQ’s Blog & Grill to share her path to success and how others can do the same. Jane founded IM@Events after uncovering a need in the event industry to produce and execute event coverage from front to back. IM@Events provides full digital media coverage of events and conferences across southern Ontario, building buzz and creating a path for customer service. It also offers social media education to empower clients to maintain their social tactics in-house. Alan and Jane discuss the skills that make up today's social media marketer. They call on the dangers of putting youth in charge simply because of the assumption that it’s “their world”. Jane touches on social media myths, the most popular being “content is king”. She challenges this notion by stating that the community is in fact the King of your social media realm and is the driver of your content's success. Developing a personal brand? Jane suggests making video a key player in your strategy. Even if you don’t post anything online, filming yourself discussing your passions is an effective tool to find confidence in your voice and discover your “edge”. She shares the key traits she looks for in hiring and what she believes makes a successful social media marketer, as well as common mistakes marketers make when starting out. About Our Guest Jane Barkley is the founder and CEO of IM@Events, a go-to event marketing firm in Kitchener, Canada, founded in 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with an Honours in English Literature from the University of Waterloo. Jane is also a writer, speaker, YouTube vlogger, community builder and Social Media Professor at Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
