How are we teaching higher ed/student affairs graduate and doctoral students about technology - and especially social media strategy in higher ed? I’ve been teaching a summer graduate course called Technology in Higher Education at Florida State University for several years - one of the very few (if any) courses of its kind. Every semester I invite higher ed leaders, practitioners, and scholars to be part of the course - like these five forward-thinking pros who joined us in July 2020: La'Tonya Rease Miles, Julie Payne-Kirchmeier, Joe Sabado, TJ Logan, and Jennielle Strother. Even without social media, serving in an executive position in higher education has become extremely taxing. Add on social media and sustainability gets even more strained. Dr. Terisa Riley is the newly appointed Chancellor of The University of Arkansas Fort Smith, but is already changing the landscape of what being chancellor looks like - online and on campus. Terisa is the first female Chancellor of the university and in this episode shares her journey from being a first-generation student. We discuss how her strategy behind her executive transition, including the digital messaging from position announcement to her first day on campus. College students today have a radically different experience growing up with social media. We explore this topic with this week’s guest, Sarah Aguilar. Sarah is currently a Junior Psychology major at Illinois State University, where she holds several student leader roles on campus including serving as the ISU Student Trustee and is part of the division of student affairs digital influence student team. The presidency in higher education can be personal, which is exactly why I invited on not only the president of Washington State Kirk Schulz but also the first lady Noel Schulz, who also serves as an engineering professor. This first family talks about how the role university president has drastically changed related to social media and public presence - which for them even include their grown children and corgi puppies.
