This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comLast week, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order freezing US aid to South Africa, saying that their new land ownership law – meant to address the legacy of apartheid – “blatantly discriminates against ethnic minority Afrikaners.” This came just days after Elon Musk railed against the law on Twitter, calling it “openly racist.”In this interview, South Africa's Ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool sits down with Mehdi to discuss the new law, as well as Trump and Musk's decision to “interfere” with South Africa's internal politics.“Even his [Musk's] own supporters back home are reeling under the impact of what has been occasioned,” Rasool tells Mehdi. “They know that there is no land confiscation. They know that 30 years later, this is the most benign land reform that has come in. They know that Afrikaners and whites own 70% of the land to this day and all the farms – mostly – in South Africa.”The ambassador also discussed the country's ICJ case against Israel, which the Trump administration cited as one of the reasons for freezing aid to South Africa.“The growing consensus in South Africa is that whatever we've experienced in South Africa is on steroids in Palestine,” Rasool tells Mehdi. “The template of apartheid has been completely magnified… That is the kind of DNA that we recognized as South Africans.”Rasool criticized Trump and Musk for meddling in other countries' politics, telling Mehdi that, “South Africa will not be falling into the temptation that President Trump and Mr. Musk have fallen into themselves, and that is to interfere in the internal politics of other countries, as was done with Britain and Germany and others.”Watch the full interview above to hear the two discuss South Africa's new coalition government, reports that South Africa may give Musk's companies a pass on the country's Black empowerment rules, and Rasool's response to Trump's plan to take over Gaza.Free subscribers can watch a 6-minute preview of the interview. The South African Ambassador in the Netherlands, Advocate Vusimuzi Madonsela, says the delay in ending the illegal occupation of Palestine by Israel has resulted in the cycle of violence. Madonsela has told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that the occupation has lasted for over 50 years in defiance of international law. South Africa and at least 50 other countries and several international organisations are taking part in the public hearings in The Hague, as the UN General Assembly seeks an advisory opinion from the World Court on Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. Madonsela highlighted the importance of the occasion.
As South Africa prepares for the 2024 national and provincial elections, there is widespread speculation about the ruling ANC's prospects for remaining in power. If the ANC fails to maintain its majority, there is speculation about which parties it might consider forming a coalition with. Former ANC Member of Parliament, South African Ambassador to Ireland, and current columnist and political analyst, Melanie Verwoerd, reveals that there is growing talk within the ANC about the possibility of seeking a coalition with the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party. Verwoerd told BizNews the ANC National Executive is, despite the fear-mongering of the DA, not interested in a coalition with the Economic Freedom Fighters. Julius Malema, she says, “is the guy whose party storms onto the stage while the president is talking in parliament. They don't like that kind of chaos and disruption.” Verwoerd said coalitions after 2024 need not be formal, they could be formed to pass money bills. She also commented on a possible IFP Presidency which she said would be “chaos.” According to Verwoerd, South Africans remain remarkably loyal to the ANC, despite their anger. Many continue to vote for the ANC due to the lack of viable alternatives. She stated that if the ANC continues to win, it would serve as a strong indictment against opposition parties.
