In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with Mahmoud Mushtaha, a journalist and researcher from Gaza, and Obada Shtaya, the co-founder and CEO of the West Bank-based Institute for Social and Economic Progress. Mahmoud recently published two articles that focus on the thousands of people still missing in Gaza, drawing in part from research that Obada's institute conducted. Ahmed, Mahmoud, and Obada speak about the people who have been disappeared in Palestine and the social impact on survivors, and they discuss their backgrounds and experiences as Palestinians in both the West Bank and Gaza. Mahmoud's recent articles: "Hassan Took a Bike Ride. Now He's One of the Thousands Missing in Gaza," Wired Magazine (March 2026); "What Happens When You Can't Get a Death Certificate in Gaza," Wired Magazine (March 2026); Obada Shtaya is Co-Founder and CEO of the Institute for Social and Economic Progress. Mahmoud Mushtaha is a Palestinian journalist and researcher from Gaza, and the author of Sobrevivir al genocidio en Gaza (“Surviving the Genocide in Gaza”), his first book, published in Spanish. Their partnership is a product of the Palestine Reporting Lab. Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. He also currently serves on the board of the Independence Media Foundation. His work has been published in The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation, and elsewhere. Dr. Erik Christensen took the stand expecting to bolster the prosecution's case against Kouri Richins. What happened instead has given the defense ammunition they'll use through closing arguments. The state's own former Chief Medical Examiner admitted Eric Richins' death certificate still lists manner of death as "undetermined"—not homicide.Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke are joined by defense attorney Bob Motta for an in-depth analysis of the prosecution's case and whether it's holding together. The jury heard a nine-minute recording of Kouri calling Christensen's office weeks after Eric's death, asking about fentanyl levels and how the drug might have been ingested. The prosecution frames this as consciousness of guilt. The defense calls it a grieving widow seeking answers.The drug supply chain the prosecution built is showing cracks. Robert Crozier—who allegedly sold drugs to Carmen Lauber—testified under oath that he only provided oxycodone, not fentanyl, because "everybody was scared of fentanyl." That directly contradicts Lauber's story. Bob Motta explains why witness contradictions at this level can be fatal to a prosecution's theory.Christensen also testified that "a lot" of Seroquel was found in Eric's blood but dismissed it as insignificant. Neither side has focused on this detail. Could the anti-psychotic medication become a sleeper issue as the trial continues?The prosecution has established Eric died of fentanyl, Kouri had financial problems, and she was involved with another man. What they haven't established: what drugs Carmen actually obtained, the chain of custody to Eric, or proof that Kouri administered anything. The department of international relations and cooperation (Dirco) has sent a specialist team to Israel to negotiate release of six detained South African activists. According to DIRCO , the team met with the South African delegation at the Negev Israeli Prison facility and has also confirmed that the detainees are in good health and in high spirits. In this episode, we tackle a difficult but crucial topic: what to do when someone passes away. While it's not a conversation most people want to have, planning ahead can save significant stress and confusion for those left behind.We start with the immediate steps that need to be taken. First, a legal pronouncement of death is required, which is usually handled by hospital or hospice staff, but in cases of a home passing, 911 or hospice must be called. Then, notifying immediate family and close friends becomes a priority. This can be overwhelming, so enlisting help to spread the word is essential. Arranging transportation of the body, securing the deceased's home and belongings, and taking care of any pets are also critical early tasks.Next, we move into handling financial and legal matters. Obtaining multiple copies of the death certificate is key, as most financial institutions require them. Locating the will or estate documents helps determine whether probate is necessary. If the deceased's assets were solely in their name, probate is likely required. However, if assets were jointly owned or placed in a trust, probate may be avoided. It's important to notify key institutions—banks, investment custodians, mortgage lenders, pension providers, Social Security, and credit card companies—to avoid complications like continued payments that may need to be repaid.Probate can be a time-consuming and public legal process, so we discuss three common scenarios:If assets are solely owned, probate is required to legally transfer them.If assets are jointly owned, probate is not needed, and the co-owner retains full ownership.If a trust is in place, assets can be distributed per the trust's instructions without probate, saving time and legal fees.After probate (or if it's not required), the final steps include distributing personal belongings and assets, closing remaining accounts, and handling final taxes. Supporting family members emotionally and financially is also critical, as unexpected financial burdens can arise even with the best planning.The best way to ease this process is by planning ahead. Having an updated will or trust, maintaining a list of financial accounts and key documents, using a password vault, and discussing final wishes with loved ones can help ensure a smooth transition. Regularly reviewing beneficiary designations on accounts and property is also essential to prevent unintended complications.While this is a difficult conversation, taking steps now can relieve significant stress later. On December 30, 2023, 14 year old Kaden Moses was found fatally shot in his bedroom in his home in Clinton, SC. The autopsy report classified his death as a homicide. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has told Kaden's mother, Erika, that the case is closed, unless "additional credible evidence is discovered" the case will remain closed. Erika Moses spoke with Matt and Seton about the many questions he has about the investigation into her son's death. This episode contains updates on Jaden's Law. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the maternal mortality rate in the United States is very high compared to other wealthy countries: About 22.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This is on par with China and Iran, based on UNICEF data.So why is the US maternal mortality rate so high? It may have to do with how we fill out death certificates.A study from earlier this year found that misfiling of information in death certificates may be inflating the numbers. The study authors concluded that the US maternal mortality rate was actually half of the CDC-reported rate—about 10.4 per 100,000 live births—which is in line with countries like Canada and the United Kingdom.But if death certificates can skew maternal mortality statistics by such a huge margin, what else could they be influencing? On a bright and sunny June afternoon, a seven-year-old boy was left in the care of his teenage neighbour. No one knew, or would even have dreamed of suspecting, that the teenager was a Satanist. The recent release of Matthew Perry's death certificate sheds light on the circumstances surrounding the "Friends" star's passing. The certificate indicates that Perry, who died at the age of 54, passed away on October 28 at his home in Pacific Palisades, California, with "Dateline" correspondent Keith Morrison listed as the informant. Perry's final resting place is the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. While the certificate lists his occupation as an actor of 38 years, the cause of death remains "deferred." Toxicology reports are pending, but initial indications suggest no foul play and no illegal drugs were found at the scene. Face-to-face interventions involved on-site assessment by a geriatrician and aged care clinical nurse specialist (CNS). The study identified some pros and cons related to use of telemedicine in nursing home communities. I recently got the chance to meet Mitch Horowitz in person. He was so nice and so cool and I nervously asked him for another interview.
