“I do want to make money, but I want to make money in the right way, ethically. But more importantly, I want use this money to be able to give back.”Charles Gitonga speaks to entrepreneur and businessman Mohammed Dewji about becoming one of Africa's youngest billionaires and how he wants to use his wealth.Mohammed Dewji is a Tanzanian businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist who has primarily accumulated his wealth from his family business, an East African conglomerate founded by his grandparents and expanded by his father in the 1970s. It deals with textile manufacturing, flour milling, beverages and edible oils. About twenty-five years ago, Africa had no dollar billionaires. Today, there are still only 23, not a huge number for a continent rich in mineral wealth and an abundance of relatively cheap labour. Their combined wealth has grown to more than 100 billion US dollars.Dewji signed the Giving Pledge in 2016 promising to donate at least half his fortune to philanthropic causes. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has successfully facilitated the return of another group of Nigerian migrants evacuated from Libya. This latest group of 180 returnees, predominantly consisting of women and children, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos via a chartered flight from Libya. As reported by the IOM, many of these individuals faced severe hardships, including detention, exploitation, and uncertainty during their attempts to migrate abroad. The agency further indicated that the returnees received health screenings, counselling, and other immediate assistance, with eligible individuals set to receive reintegration support aimed at helping them rebuild their lives.“The recent operation is part of a continuous partnership between the IOM, the Federal Government, and international collaborators to facilitate voluntary returns and encourage safer migration pathways,” the agency stated in its announcement. The IOM has reported rescuing over 65,500 stranded Nigerian migrants in the last nine years. During a migration reporting workshop held in Lagos, it was revealed that more than 30,000 returnees have also benefited from psychological, social, and economic support to aid in their reintegration.Nevertheless, the agency emphasized its commitment to enhancing efforts to promote safe and legal migration pathways, while calling for increased public awareness and responsible media coverage regarding migration issues.Concerned about the risks associated with irregular migration, the Federal Government issued a warning in May 2026, advising Nigerians against departing the country without valid travel documents.

Solmaz Khorsand in conversation with Friederike Frieß, Amb. Alexander Kmentt and Nikolai SokovARE WE READY FOR THE NEW NUCLEAR AGE? The world has entered a dangerous new phase in dealing with nuclear risks, “the third nuclear age” driven by an often referenced and poorly defined “great power competition” as Alexandra Bell, President and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists put it. There are persistent nuclear threats from Putin's regime and by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un's alarming missile tests. Furthermore, US President Donald Trump is calling for renewed testing of America's nuclear infrastructure. What will the world look like when, as IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi predicts, there are 20 to 25 nuclear-armed states instead of the current nine, and they flex their muscles more and more? What cards do the proponents of a rule-based world order still have to convince nuclear-hungry leaders of the threat posed by these weapons, which they brandish like toys? For decades, the field of scholarship that studies the law and practice of international organisations -also known as 'international institutional law'- has been marked by an intellectual quietism. Most of the scholarship tends to focus narrowly on providing 'legal' answers to 'legal' questions. For that reason, perspectives rarely engage with the insights of critical traditions of legal thought (for instance, feminist, postcolonial, or political economy-oriented perspectives) or with interdisciplinary contributions produced outside the field. Ways of Seeing International Organisations: New Perspectives for International Institutional Law (Cambridge UP, 2025) edited by Dr. Negar Mansouri & Dr. Daniel R. Quiroga-Villamarín challenges the narrow gaze of the field by bringing together authors across multiple disciplines to reflect on the need for 'new' perspectives in international institutional law. Highlighting the limits of mainstream approaches, the authors instead interrogate international organisations as pivots in processes of world-making. To achieve this, the volume is organised around four fundamental themes: expertise; structure; performance; and capital. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. International organisations have become major players in global affairs, with the European Union standing out as especially powerful. But the EU's decision-making processes often attract sharp criticism: requiring agreement among many states can cause paralysis, while overriding individual states raises concerns about sovereignty. This episode explores a new study that revisits how the EU has historically grappled with this tension, focusing on two pivotal moments—the Luxembourg Compromise of 1966 and the Paris Summit of 1974. The findings challenge long-held assumptions about the (in)effectiveness of decision making in the EU, and offer fresh insights into how the EU really works.Alan Renwick is joined by Dr Jonathan Golub, Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading, and our very own Dr Michal Ovádek, Lecturer in European Institutions, Politics and Policy here in the UCL Department of Political Science. Mentioned in this episode:Golub, J. and Ovádek, M. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.

While structured data elements such as patient identifier, medicine name and reaction, are fundamental for adverse event reporting, they may not capture all relevant details. The lingering impact of mass displacement in Lebanon

More than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since last October, with Israel intensifying its attacks since September, launching a ground invasion into the country and an air strike campaign that has caused much destruction. Its bombings have become more unpredictable in scale and location, forcing masses to flee their homes.   More than 1.2 million people have been displaced since Israel escalated its war. Several hundred thousand, many of them already refugees, have fled across the border to Syria despite the risks they face there.   The spillover war from Gaza is wreaking havoc on a population that had already been grappling with years of economic and political turmoil. The Lebanese state's resources are far too strained to cope with the scale of displacement and there are not nearly enough organised shelters. For vulnerable minorities in the country, including Syrian refugees and migrant workers, the conditions are even more challenging.   Israel says it is attacking Hezbollah, but its campaign has provoked widespread international condemnation because of the high civilian toll. This week, US envoy Amos Hochstein is in the Middle East in an attempt to broker a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah. That cannot come soon enough for the hundreds of thousands of displaced people. But what would those who have lost their homes and their livelihoods return to?   This week on Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher looks at the deepening displacement crisis in Lebanon and its impact on the future of the country and its people. She speaks to the head of the International Organisation for Migration in Lebanon, Mathieu Luciano, and Prof Mona Fawaz from the American University of Beirut.

Ornua, Ireland's largest exporter of dairy products and owner of the Kerrygold brand, has obtained ISO 27001 certification, the leading international standard for Information Security Management Systems. In line with the company's commitment to fostering a positive cybersecurity culture, the certification demonstrates the strength of Ornua's cybersecurity controls. ISO 27001 is developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and provides guidelines for establishing and improving information security of organisations. Securing certification involved a rigorous 18-month journey of implementing stringent risk management and control procedures, as well as undergoing a detailed independent auditing process to assess Ornua's implementation of cybersecurity measures across its global business and operations. Ornua Chief Technology Officer Maurice Hennessy said: "I am pleased to announce that Ornua has obtained ISO 27001 certification - the global standard for information security. This certification is a testament to our global ICT team's unwavering commitment to continuously improving information security and data protection that not only enhances our own organisation security infrastructure but serves to build trust amongst our long-standing customers and partners." "Cybersecurity is an ever-evolving area and we recognise the importance of embedding a whole-organisation approach where cybersecurity is everybody's responsibility. The ISO 27001 certification is an important milestone in our journey that we look forward to building on." See more stories here.

Vytautas Jankauskas and Steffen Eckhard, "The Politics of Evaluation in International Organizations" (Oxford UP, 2023)

Evaluation has become a key tool in assessing the performance of international organisations, in fostering learning, and in demonstrating accountability. Within the United Nations (UN) system, thousands of evaluators and consultants produce hundreds of evaluation reports worth millions of dollars every year. But does evaluation really deliver on its promise of objective evidence and functional use? By unravelling the internal machinery of evaluation systems in international organisations, The Politics of Evaluation in International Organisations (Oxford University Press, 2023) challenges the conventional understanding of evaluation as a value-free activity. Dr. Vytautas Jankauskas and Dr. Steffen Eckhard show how a seemingly neutral technocratic tool can serve as an instrument for power in global governance; they demonstrate and explain how deeply politics are entrenched in the interests of evaluation stakeholders, in the control and design of IO evaluation systems, and to a lesser extent also in the content of evaluation reports. The analysis draws on 120 research interviews with evaluators, member state representatives, and IO secretariat officials as well as on textual analysis of over 200 evaluation reports. The investigation covers 21 UN system organisations, including detailed case studies of the ILO, IMF, UNDP, UN WOMEN, IOM, UNHCR, FAO, WHO, and UNESCO. Shedding light on the (in-)effectiveness of evidence-based policymaking, the authors propose possible ways of better reconciling the observed evaluation politics with the need to gather reliable evidence that is used to improve the functioning of the United Nations. The answer to evaluation politics is not to abandon evaluation or isolate it from the stakeholders but to acknowledge surrounding political interests and design evaluation systems accordingly. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. While much of the success of the show is due to my fabulous guests, I am also lucky to have a wonderful team to assist me at the University of Oslo. I wish to in particular thank Kristoffer Ring, our IT guru, and Oda Fagerland, Bella Reid, and Eliska Sottova for research assistance and transcripts. My colleague Desmond McNeill, who was on the show earlier this year discussing the power of ideas and metaphors in international development policy, has invented a game which he calls “acronisation”. The game is designed to test your knowledge about international organizations and bilateral aid agencies. If you can identity 10 acronyms or more, Desmond would be delighted to receive an e-mail from you latest by the 11th of January. Please write to Desmond at: desmond.mcneill@sum.uio.noHappy holidays! Host:Professor Dan Banik, University of Oslo, Twitter: @danbanik  @GlobalDevPodApple Google Spotify YouTubehttps://in-pursuit-of-development.simplecast.com/
