Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau is in the crosshairs for not releasing over 600 million Rand of government approved payments for completed TV and film projects. In his latest interview with Chris Steyn, Toby Chance, the Democratic Alliance's spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition and Portfolio Committee member says: “…it's our job as the committee to summon the minister to account for his inaction in this regard”. Chance has also written to the Speaker requesting an urgent Parliamentary debate on the matter. “…it's a serious problem and companies not just are closing down, but they're relocating; some are relocating to Portugal, some to Malta. They're just closing shop - and it was actually tragic on Wednesday when we were walking through the crowds and talking to these producers about how their livelihoods over many years have just been trashed.”

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is pushing back against calls to rename the province "KwaZulu". The proposal by King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has IFP support, but critics say it could divide communities and erase history. DA provincial leader Francois Rodgers told our Senior producer Ronald Phiri that there are far more pressing issues, like service delivery, economic recovery, unemployment and infrastructure challenges than renaming the province
The Gauteng Department of Education has denied claims of a 64% funding cut for Quintile 5 schools. The department calls the claims "false, misleading and reckless", saying they've been distorted by the Democratic Alliance. The DA launched a petition against the alleged cuts, which they say will harm learners and teachers from April this year. Elvis Presslin spoke to Gauteng Education Department Spokesperson, Steve Mabona
There have been dramatic scenes in Parliament where the Ad Hoc Committee has resumed hearing testimony of police and political capture. In her latest interview with BizNews, Juanita du Preez of Action Society speaks to Chris Steyn about Crime Intelligence (CI) Chief General Dumisani Khumalo's warning that criminal organisations survive by their connections to politicians, law enforcement officials and business leaders who leak sensitive information to derail investigations. She also comments on the heated exchange between the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Glynnis Breytenbach and the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF's) Leigh Ann Mathys; former IPID boss Robert McBride gunning for General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi; and the Committee's decision to compel forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan to appear in person - despite his fears for his life.

ActionSA and the Democratic Alliance are calling for an urgent investigation into reports that senior SANDF officials defied President Cyril Ramaphosa's orders during naval drills in Simon's Town. The President had reportedly instructed that Iran be excluded from the exercises, but Iranian warships allegedly took part. ActionSA's parliamentary chief whip, Lerato Ngobeni, says this is a "serious breach of the constitutional chain of command". Ngobeni has written to the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, demanding answers. Elvis Presslin spoke to Lerato Ngobeni for more on this developing story
The Democratic Alliance is grappling with fighting between senior national leaders, months before its elective congress. This as former Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Dion George THIS WEEK resigned from the DA and Parliament, following a bitter public fallout with party leader John Steenhuisen. His resignation was preceded by his removal as minister in November at the DA's request and replaced by party spokesperson, Willie Aucamp. George claims he was removed due to his hardline stance against the wildlife-breeding and the hunting industry, while Steenhuisen maintains that George was removed for poor performance in his portfolio. Following this, George, who was also the DA's federal finance chair, publicly revealed Steenhuisen's money issues and also accused the party leader of being captured by the ANC and beholden to the GNU. The DA is not taking interviews about the spat but some analysts believe the saga has already damaged the party. For a look at the state of the DA and what this means, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Director for the Centre for Security, Peace, and Conflict Resolution at Nelson Mandela University
John Maytham speaks to Daniel Silke about the fallout from Dion George’s very public exit, what it reveals about the DA’s internal politics, and how the party might navigate these turbulent waters as it heads into an election year. The Democratic Alliance is urging International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola to take action against Iran at the United Nations Human Rights Council. The call comes as Iran's death toll from anti-government protests nears 3000. The DA says South Africa's constitution requires the government to protect human rights globally and condemn authoritarian regimes. Elvis Presslin spoke to Na'eem Jeenah, Senior Researcher at the Mapungubwe Institute for strategic reflection
John Maytham is joined now by Tony Leon, former Member of the National Assembly of South Africa, to unpack the ongoing turmoil. Leon will provide insight into what this infighting means for the DA’s future, how political parties can navigate internal disputes, and what leadership strategies can help restore cohesion and confidence among members and supporters alike. Tomorrow, The National Freedom Party (NFP) plans to formally announce its withdrawal from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government of Unity. In his reaction, the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) leader in the province, Francois Rodgers, tells Chris Steyn: “…if the NFP are all about service delivery…and building a province, why would they take this particular approach? There seems to be something more sinister behind it… We rather see a grabbing of power.” Should the NFP now form a coalition with former President Jacob Zuma's MKP and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), they would have 40 seats and cause a hung legislature. “So if the MKP and the EFF and the NFP decided they weren't going to support budgets or anything, you wouldn't be able to pass budgets. And ultimately…you'd get to a point where they'd have to have…fresh elections…” In a bid to prevent this, the DA is currently engaging with “all of our existing partners”, the African National Congress (ANC), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), as well as the NFP. As for the rumour that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla resigned as an MP because she covets a starring role in KZN, Rodgers says: “…the MK party is a bit of an Nkandla Stokvel that looks after family members. So I wouldn't be surprised if this was the ultimate goal… we will do everything in our power as the Democratic Alliance to ensure that the fiscus is protected from any further looting as we've seen in the past by Jacob Zuma."
In his latest interview with Chris Steyn, Toby Chance, the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition, details yet another harsh blow to former National Lotteries Commission (NLC) staff who had exposed large-scale corruption and illegal grants of up to R2bn. He describes how they were initially promised R20m for reparations, but recently informed that they won't receive monetary compensation. “It turns out that most of the money would have been spent on consulting fees and other things which doesn't help the whistleblowers one bit…they've been financially ruined. Their families have abandoned them. They're living in caravans. They're close to suicide. They've lost their jobs. They can't get jobs. Their lives have been completely ruined…. these people risk everything for exposing the rot at the NLC”. Chance further points out that, between 2019 and 2024, the NLC spent over R70 million on legal fees, “much of which was spent on basically taking the whistleblowers to court and protecting the NLC from the charges that were levelled against them by the whistleblowers”. Meanwhile, “not a single one of (those implicated) has yet been presented with a set of yellow overalls”. Chance also gives an update on the legal battles over the awarding of the 4th licence.
Bongani Bingwa speaks with Democratic Alliance councillor Shakes Chabalala about Johannesburg’s security concerns, as the City spends over R16 million each month on outsourced private security — including more than R1 million to guard the condemned Metro Centre, a building so unsafe it cannot even accommodate staff. This is despite the presence of more than 4,000 insourced security guards, a programme launched in 2018 and expanded in 2019 with the promise of improved pay for workers and cost savings for taxpayers. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Bongani makes sense of the news, interviews the key newsmakers of the day, and holds those in power to account on your behalf. A big battle has begun to overcome the “coalition chaos and instability that has allowed Nelson Mandela Bay to be hijacked by criminal networks”. In this interview, Retief Odendaal, the Democratic Alliance's mayoral candidate, tells Chris Steyn that the City has the dubious record of having the most irregular expenditure of any municipality - R28 billion, while 10,000 street lights are not working, not a single engineer is left in the electricity department - and despite being one of only two metros in the country that actually still has some cash reserves, it can't deliver services. Since 2009, the City has had 48 municipal managers and 12 mayors. “If you take the municipal managers, it equates to about one every quarter. People ask me, but why does that happen? And I say, well, it's to facilitate looting because one loots from the State when there is absolute chaos.” Odendaal, urges citizens to give the DA the votes it needs for an outright majority as he outlines the measures needed to turn the Metro around. “…the good news for South Africans, not just in Nelson Mandela Bay, but in every other broken city and municipality in South Africa is that bad governments can be removed, corrupt people can be voted out of office.”
Johannesburg is falling apart - power cuts, potholes, broken pipes, waste piling up, and corruption choking the city that once symbolised South Africa's promise. But one of the country's most formidable political figures says she can fix it. Phumi Mashigo sits down with Helen Zille, the former Mayor of Cape Town, Western Cape Premier, and now 2026 Johannesburg Mayoral candidate for the Democratic Alliance. She's one of the most polarising voices in South African politics, and the question that everyone's been whispering is asked: Can she really save Johannesburg? The Burning Platform
