The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
This week Dr Gavin Ashenden is joined from California by author James Crowell to discuss the work and vision of John Paul the Great Catholic University, an institute founded to harness the power of beauty to transform culture. They discuss the ambition of the university to shape “the next generation of artists and innovators with academic excellence, unparalleled creativity, and an authentic community centred on Jesus Christ”. Inspired by St John Paul's demand for a new evangelisation, the Catholic film school aims to provide a hub to create culture by bringing together storytellers, artists, designers, leaders, and entrepreneurs in the pursuit of truth, beauty and goodness – and offer an antidote to an ugly and bleak post-Christian future. https://jpcatholic.edu/

On this episode we're hangin' with Pope St. John Paul the 2nd!
St. John Paul the Great, our beloved Pope, taught us how to find our identity in God. He inspired so many young people during his life, constantly reminding them to find their worth in Christ instead of any false ideas of the world. Our worth can only be found in the sum of God's love for us. His legacy is one of great inspiration and a call to heroically live out the Christian call. Our guest podcaster today is Rev. Fr. Charles Canoy. He is a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Lansing in Michigan. “Father Chas,” as he is more commonly called, grew up in Columbia, Missouri. He graduated from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1994. He then worked for a few years as a business planning associate for General Mills and then as a regional director for Legatus, an organization of Catholic business leaders. Before entering seminary, Fr. Canoy studied two years at Franciscan University in Ohio and a year in Rome. A transformative 30-day Ignatian retreat during the Lent of 2001 prompted him to pursue the diocesan priesthood and enter Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, where he earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.), graduating summa cum laude in 2005. On June 11, 2005, Fr. Canoy was ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. He served for five years at two parishes, St. Thomas the Apostle in downtown Ann Arbor and St. Andrew the Apostle in Saline, Michigan. In 2010, he then served on the faculty of the same seminary from which he graduated, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, for four years while completing his S.T.L. degree from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas with a specialty in the New Evangelization in 2014. Fr. Chas been serving as the pastor at St. John the Evangelist in Jackson, Michigan ever since.Fr. Chas still enjoys his childhood sport of golf, but now with a glass of bourbon on the rocks afterward. With your and my prayer, it is possible to mitigate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert it, because only thus can the Church be effectively renewed. ...We must be strong and prepared, and trust in Christ and His Mother, and be very, very assiduous in praying the Rosary." - 95 End Times page 27 Find more of about Patrick: https://patricknovecosky.com/ https://novamedia.us/patrick-novecosky/

I think we are starting to get used to our "new normal "... or at least it feels that way to me. Don't get me wrong - there's still plenty of challenges, twists, turns, and bad news coming. But you shouldn't take this journey alone. With new challenges come new opportunities. Saint John Paul II taught us this in his Apostolic Letter, The Rapid Development. He recognized that technology would help Catholic apostolates fulfill their missions. He says, 'Do not be afraid of new technologies! These rank “among the marvelous things."' We've seen technology help do this in these past weeks; Livestream Masses and Adoration, online education, virtual retreats, and online donation requests. What can Saint John Paul II teach you about the rapid development of technology and how it can help your Catholic apostolate? That is what's this week's discussion is all about: https://catholicfundraiser.net/saint-john-paul-ii-advice-global-pandemic/

CCC 268 Of all the divine attributes, only God's omnipotence (that He is All-Powefull) is named in the Creed: "I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH." To profess this power has great bearing on our lives. We believe that his might is universal, for God who created everything also rules everything and can do everything. God's power is loving, for he is our Father, and mysterious, for only faith can discern it when it "is made perfect in weakness. " CCC 269 The Holy Scriptures repeatedly confess the universal power of God…If God is almighty "in heaven and on earth", it is because he made them. Nothing is impossible with God, who disposes his works according to his will. He is the Lord of the universe, whose order he established and which remains wholly subject to him and at his disposal. He is master of history, governing hearts and events in keeping with his will: As Wisdom 11:21 states "It is always in your power to show great strength, and who can withstand the strength of your arm? CCC 270 God is the Father Almighty, whose fatherhood and power shed light on one another: God reveals his fatherly power in three ways: by the way he takes care of our needs; by the filial adoption that he gives us ("I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty"): God shows forth his almighty power by converting us from our sins and restoring us to his friendship by grace. The power of God is seen most clearly in his mercy and forgiveness. In the face of evil God seems apparently powerlessness 272 Faith in God the Father Almighty can be put to the test by the experience of evil and suffering. God can sometimes seem to be absent and incapable of stopping evil. But in the most mysterious way God the Father has revealed his almighty power in the death and Resurrection of his Son, by which he conquered evil. Christ crucified is thus "the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." It is precisely in our weakness that the power of God is manifest. St John Paul writes in his letter on the meaning of human suffering: the weaknesses of all human sufferings are capable of being infused with the same power of God manifested in Christ's Cross. In such a concept, to suffer means to become particularly susceptible, particularly open to the working of the salvific powers of God, offered to humanity in Christ. In him God has confirmed his desire to act especially through suffering, which is man's weakness and emptying of self, and he wishes to make his power known precisely in this weakness and emptying of self. Salvific Dolores 23 CCC 273 Only faith can embrace the mysterious ways of God's almighty power. This faith glories in its weaknesses in order to draw to itself Christ's power. The Virgin Mary is the supreme model of this faith, for she believed that "nothing will be impossible with God", and was able to magnify the Lord: "For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name." Mary believed the words of the Angel, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the Power of the Most Hight will overshadow you…and Nothing will be impossible to God.” Even before it happened and her belief enabled it to happen. Mary continued to believe as she stood beneath the Cross, held her dead Son in her arms and laid him in the Tomb. And God did what seemed impossible – He raised her Son from the Dead. Mary come and be our faith in God the Father Almighty when we are weak. How do we stay faithful when things seem impossible? Keep this in mind at all times and say it over and over: Nothing is impossible to God; and God works all things for good for those who love him. CCC 274 "Nothing is more apt to confirm our faith and hope than holding it fixed in our minds that nothing is impossible with God. Romans 8:28 All things work for good for those who love God.

The only way we can fulfill this scripture passage is to recognize that humanity does not belong to Caesar, but to God. And the fullest way to give humanity to back to God is by giving him his only begotten Son in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
