The current education system in the United States is increasingly misaligned with the needs of many Americans. This paper explores the shortcomings of our “federalist” approach to education, emphasizing how federal overreach and bureaucratic stagnation have hindered progress and outcomes. While federal involvement was intended to promote equity and accountability, it has often devolved into inflexible mandates and uniform policies that erode local autonomy and fail to address the unique needs of communities. These dynamics not only limit the ability of families to govern themselves but also weaken the cultivation of moral character, which is vital for personal and societal growth.Ray Nothstine is a Future of Freedom Fellow and senior editor and writer for State Policy Network, where he primarily helps to shepherd the American Habits publication. He previously worked as opinion editor at Carolina Journal and as a Second Amendment research fellow at the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh, North Carolina.Nothstine graduated with a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He also holds a B.A. in political science from The University of Mississippi in Oxford. He currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and three sons.

The reality for Black individuals and families living in the U.S. is that death happens more often and earlier on than for their white counterparts. In the last two decades, these higher rates of mortality resulted in 1.63 million excess deaths for Black Americans compared to white Americans. Doneila McIntosh brings her personal and professional experiences with this reality to her work as a researcher studying the intersections of disenfranchised grief among African American families. Disenfranchised grief occurs when a loss isn't recognized or seen as valid, often the result of stigma. The disenfranchisement of Black grief is rooted in racism, which influences both the disproportionate rates of mortality and the lack of support for grief and grief expression. Doneila McIntosh is a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota in Family Social Science with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. Doneila has a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) in Theological Studies and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology (M.A.). Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, she worked as a chaplain for nearly 10 years. We discuss: Doneila's current research on understanding the impact of disproportionate rates of death and grief in the African American community. Her personal and professional motivation to do this work. The desecration of sacred Black grief spaces. How structural racism leads to Doneila and other researchers having to “prove” the reality of disproportionate rates of death for Black people living in the U.S. The disenfranchisement of African American grief. How the language we use to talk about grief is rooted in culture and how that can be a strength. The gap in the research literature about Black and African American grief. Culturally specific interventions to support grief. How culture shapes grief expression. Doneila's work to become literate in the historical & current context of Black grief and the cultural strengths she uncovered along the way. How her family honors her grandfather's legacy. For those of us not currently connected to the academic world, the idea of furthering our education as Christians can be daunting. Where do you start? What should you consider before taking on this experience? Is it worth it even if it doesn't increase your earning potential? In this episode, JP and Stan share practical advice and wisdom for evaluating the costs and benefits of going beyond learning in an informal setting; specifically as it relates to masters and doctoral degrees in philosophy and ministry. In this podcast, we discuss: How do you know whether or not further formal education is a good fit for you and your season of life? What are the differences between Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) and Masters of Arts? On the doctoral level, what is the difference between a Ph.D. and a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.)? What is the discernment process for deciding which program might be the best fit? What is the difference between studying under mentors who are masters at their craft and learning on your own? How can different types of cohorts shape graduate education? How to evaluate a program when considering graduate studies and where to find more information. It can be hard enough to seek the counsel of a professional psychologist, let alone find one that can speak to your specific struggles with good and true theology. Grounded in Scripture, centered on Christ, distinguishing Law and Gospel, and living under a theology of the cross, Lutherans have a unique approach to Christian counseling. Guest Dr. Rick Marrs is a seminary professor and licensed psychologist who authored the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered. In this episode, Dr. Marrs guides listeners through the initial hurdle of identifying a trusted Christian counselor and describes what makes counseling through the lens of Lutheran theology unique and particularly beneficial. Marrs also answers questions about the modern trend toward telehealth counseling and discusses the upsides and downfalls of this practice. Bio: Dr. Richard “Rick” Marrs is professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Marrs was called to the faculty in the fall of 2006. He previously served as the dean of faculty (2010–13), director of Continuing Education and Parish Services (2007–09) and director of the Master of Divinity (M.div.) and Residential Alternate Route (RAR) Programs (2013-21). His areas of interest and expertise include pastoral care and counseling, Christian counseling and Christian reconciliation. Before coming to the Seminary, he served at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City, Kan. (2000–06), first as a vicar and then as a pastor. He was a professor of psychology and a counselor at St. John's College in Winfield, Kan. (1983–86; admissions counselor 1982–83), and at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill. (1986–98). He also has done counseling, clinical and consulting work with Lutheran Child and Family Services; the Baldwin Center for Psychological Services; the Center for Applied Psychology and Forensic Studies; the Kansas State University counseling center; Rapha (a Christian inpatient psychiatric group); Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Lutheran Special Education Ministries; and various districts of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Marrs received certification for pastoral ministry through the Seminary's RAR Program and earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) both from Concordia Seminary (2001, 2008). He also holds an Associate of Arts (A.A.) from St. John's College (1978); a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Concordia College, River Forest, Ill. (now Concordia University Chicago) (1980); a Master of Science (M.S.) in counseling from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. (1985); and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in counseling psychology from Loyola University Chicago in Chicago, Ill. (1994). He has been licensed as a psychologist since 1996. In 2019, Marrs published the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered, which focuses on the relevance of Luther's soul-care theology in Christian counseling (WestBow Press). He continues and expands that discussion in a blog series on Concordia Theology. He and Seminary Emeritus Professor Dr. Robert Kolb also are co-authoring an article about Lutheran contributions to the theology of Christian psychology. Marrs contributed the new introduction to the reprint of Walter J. Koehler's book Counseling and Confession: The Role of Confession and Absolution in Pastoral Counseling (Concordia Publishing House, 1982, 2011). He has authored numerous Bible studies, articles and training programs for the LCMS. Preaching for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, JoAnn Melina Lopez offers a reflection on our call to journey to the tomb and co-create, with God, new life: "God is bringing life to birth, restoring and renewing our world. Do we see it? God is calling us to partner in rolling away the stones and untying the bonds of injustice. Do we hear it? This resurrection hope in the life-giving power of God is not just something for us to say we believe, but it must be encountered and experienced – and it only comes to us who are at the tomb. We must be willing to acknowledge our suffering, and the suffering of the world, and open ourselves up to God's Spirit at work." JoAnn Melina Lopez, M.Div. has been immersed in Catholic formation, education, and action for fifteen years. After completing her undergraduate degree at Saint Joseph's University, she served as a Jesuit Volunteer in Houston, working with asylum seekers and refugees. She received her Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry and spent seven years as Campus Minister for Liturgy at Seattle University. JoAnn currently serves as Director of Faith Formation at St. Basil's Catholic Parish in Toronto, and is pursuing a diploma focused on social justice and community empowerment. For example, showing up in times of crisis vs a phone call shows the need for connection and human interaction. Lawrence said, “hearing the claps of celebration in person satisfies proximity and connection.”We learned during the pandemic what we should never take for granted. However the pandemic and the conditions it created opened up opportunities for connecting with people from all over the world. When it comes to time management, Adjah expresses that everyone has a choice to make, and prioritizing your time is part of the way to make those decisions when it comes to your family and career. We want to do it all but we have to prioritize and be comfortable with what we can't do. If you try to do everything you end up doing nothing. Trying to do it all at the same time is what Adjah calls the “Cheesecake Factory Effect”…we get so much information daily and we must choose. Time management is a struggle. It's hard to have a quality life with depth and it involves choosing who and what to spend your life interacting with. We must make choices of what's most valuable to us without feeling we are diminishing the value of other options.Living intentionally vs following the societal norm or traditions, is imperative to not have regrets. Adjah said you can't control regrets at the end and he decided to live more intentionally with his time because he wants no regrets if he has no more time left.Knowing you put in work to intentionally be present and intentionally act success. If you think the cost of success is too high wait till you get the bill for regret.”We all desire to recreate ourselves and we must be honest that Ai and robot use is possibility. The motive behind it is important. How can using robots make humanity better and improve the good of society? It can be exciting but...
Lawrence E. Adjah is a Community Builder and Host serving at the nexus of Business, Faith, and Community Wellness. Lawrence builds communities and hosts conversations that unite, heal and transform lives. Lawrence serves as the Founder and Chairman of the Family Dinner Foundation whose mission is to connect the world as a family at and beyond the dinner table. Beginning with its first initiative, Our Family Dinner in 2008, which reached nearly 50K young professionals around the world, its work has expanded to empowering an ecosystem of initiatives dedicated to connecting brothers and sisters as a family beyond the dinner table. In a time where many of us are mediating our lives behind a computer screen and are living in cities without strong pre-existing relationships, Lawrence became burdened by the sleeping giant of our time: loneliness. Observing that we've become more digitally connected than we've ever been, yet more isolated and disconnected interpersonally than ever before, it became his mission to address this growing issue. He believes that we were never meant to do life alone and that it is vital for people to have a space where they can build lifelong, life-sustaining relationships. Through his experience in business and community building, he became convinced the solution to this challenge is as much a spiritual matter as it is a civic, social, and technological opportunity. He pursued formal theological education and training and became an ordained Pastor and spiritual counselor who brings this foundation into every aspect of his approach to community building, business and life. Lawrence currently hosts two shows, Watch God Work, a show featuring leaders from all arenas of business, entertainment, civic leadership and culture sharing their “God Stories” and A2D (Agree2Disagree) a weekly conversation that intentionally tackles the “the challenging conversations” in our community we are having or need to have in our families, friendships and/or romantic relationships. Lawrence began his career as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in its New York office, helping to serve some of the world's largest professional sports organizations and media companies. Prior to joining McKinsey, he was a nationally ranked track and field competitor through college, where he entered as a National Champion & HS All-American. After McKinsey, Lawrence served as the Senior Director of Business Development at a premiere sports and entertainment marketing agency in New York. Lawrence has served as a trusted Executive Advisor and Counselor to business leaders, from C-suite executives to solo lead small business owners, with nearly 15 years of experience through his firm, Adjah. He's also a licensed and ordained Pastor, a Prepare + Enrich Certified Marriage Counselor, and Spiritual Coach & Trainer, who also leads the world's first gospel-based spiritual gym, Foundation JC. Lawrence serves as an Advisory Board Member and Former President of the Board of Directors for The Harvard Black Alumni Society (HBAS). Preaching for Trinity Sunday, JoAnn Melina Lopez offers a reflection on our call to share God's love with the world: "This isn’t a trite, saccharine kind of love. It’s not the kind of love that helps us fall asleep at night, warm and cozy in our beds. It’s a fierce, fiery, energizing, transforming love, that calls us to awaken every morning and go about our days as enfleshers of freedom, and disruptors of every system that obscures God’s love." JoAnn Melina Lopez currently serves as Campus Minister for Liturgy at Seattle University. She completed her undergraduate degree at Saint Joseph’s University, before going on to serve as a Jesuit Volunteer in Houston, working with asylum seekers and refugees. She received her Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) from the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, and joined Seattle U’s Campus Ministry team six years ago. St. John Paul the Great, our beloved Pope, taught us how to find our identity in God. He inspired so many young people during his life, constantly reminding them to find their worth in Christ instead of any false ideas of the world. Our worth can only be found in the sum of God's love for us. His legacy is one of great inspiration and a call to heroically live out the Christian call. Our guest podcaster today is Rev. Fr. Charles Canoy. He is a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Lansing in Michigan. “Father Chas,” as he is more commonly called, grew up in Columbia, Missouri. He graduated from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1994. He then worked for a few years as a business planning associate for General Mills and then as a regional director for Legatus, an organization of Catholic business leaders. Before entering seminary, Fr. Canoy studied two years at Franciscan University in Ohio and a year in Rome. A transformative 30-day Ignatian retreat during the Lent of 2001 prompted him to pursue the diocesan priesthood and enter Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, where he earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.), graduating summa cum laude in 2005. On June 11, 2005, Fr. Canoy was ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. He served for five years at two parishes, St. Thomas the Apostle in downtown Ann Arbor and St. Andrew the Apostle in Saline, Michigan. In 2010, he then served on the faculty of the same seminary from which he graduated, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, for four years while completing his S.T.L. degree from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas with a specialty in the New Evangelization in 2014. Fr. Chas been serving as the pastor at St. John the Evangelist in Jackson, Michigan ever since.Fr. Chas still enjoys his childhood sport of golf, but now with a glass of bourbon on the rocks afterward. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Daniel R. Hyde and we'll be talking about his book A Well-Ordered Church: Laying a Foundation for a Vibrant Church (EP Books, 2015). About The Book: "Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior." No phrase captures better the ethos of modern evangelical Christianity. And while this is absolutely necessary for a Christian to believe and profess, what typically gets lost in much evangelical thinking and acting is Jesus' church. This book seeks to present to evangelical Christians the basics of ecclesiology, or, the biblical doctrine of the church. The authors say in these pages, “This is a church, in the most basic and fundamental of ways. No matter what view of church government you may hold, the goal is to draw you back to the big principles of Scripture to help you understand the church s identity, authority, ecumenicity, and activity.” About The Author: Rev. Daniel R. Hyde--"Pastor Danny" to the members of Oceanside United Reformed Church--has an eclectic past: he was baptized Roman Catholic, was converted in a Foursquare church, attended an Assemblies of God college where he flirted spiritually with Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism before he discovered the riches of the historic Protestant and Reformed Christian faith. All of this prepared him to minister in the diverse religious culture of Southern California. In 2000, while still in seminary, Danny planted the Oceanside United Reformed Church (United Reformed Churches in North America) in Carlsbad/Oceanside, California. Fifteen years on later he continues as pastor and is married with four children. He and his wife enjoy showing hospitality in their home for meals, prayer, and to study the Word. Pastor Danny has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Vanguard University, Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Westminster Seminary California, and a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. His Th.M. thesis was entitled, "Of Great Importance and of High Concernment: The Liturgical Theology of John Owen (1616-1683)," and was read by Drs. Joel Beeke, Derek W. H. Thomas, and Mark Jones. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. For additional show notes, visit ShaunTabatt.com/013.

Ann Frances Ellis, Ph.D., feels she has been guided all along the way to write Revelations of . It is based on her doctoral dissertation, Profound Love as Revealed by Profound Love Near-Death Experiences, which examined 478 near-death experiences to learn about the love reported so often by those who returned from trips to heaven. She concluded that seven primary themes emerged from their reports: *We don't die, *The nature of profound love is greater than we ever imagined, *Profound love has higher qualities, *Profound love emanates from many sources, *We are all one and love is our essence, *There is a reason and purpose for everything, *In life, love is most important. She also compared what near-death experiencers reported with the texts, primary and secondary, of three world religions. She was able to find evidence of all the above conclusions within each religion. She believes it is likely that every world religion has realized these truths. She has degrees in Mathematics (B.A.), Computer Science (M.S.), Divinity (M. Div.), and Religious Studies/Comparative Religion (Ph.D.). She is a licensed minister. Her first career was as a civilian computer systems programmer/database system researcher/data communications network manager for the U.S. Navy. Her second career was as a hospital/hospice chaplain. Her third career is as author/owner of Trail of Hope Publishing.
