Organisers of a hīkoi making its way down the country to Wellington say it's about more than just opposing the Treaty Principles Bill. Marchers are still north of Whangarei, and expect to be in the Capital between Monday and Tuesday next week. People marched Wednesday night in Minneapolis to protest the planned closure of Camp Nenookaasi, a homeless encampment in the East Phillips neighborhood. And the Minnesota Supreme Court has released a decision in a case with the potential to remake the racial and socioeconomic structure of schools. The court found that racial imbalances in schools alone do not violate the state constitution. This is an MPR News morning update, hosted by Phil Picardi. Music by Gary Meister.
The situation in Gaza remains dire as a result of ongoing conflict. Gaza's main power plant has shut down, and Israel has restricted electricity, leading to a fuel shortage needed to operate critical infrastructure like water treatment facilities and hospitals for its 2.3 million residents. The United Nations has received a limited supply of fuel for its operations, but aid delivery and essential services have been disrupted. Food supplies from Egypt are insufficient, and contaminated water poses health risks. In Jerusalem, a group of marchers, including families of hostages held in Gaza, pleads for government intervention.

As the final tides of Pride wind down, the alphabet people have truly exposed themselves — both literally and figuratively. This time, a group of Pride marchers was on camera chanting “we're coming for your children.” Now, we've been told that this definitely isn't what those in the LGBT community are trying to do even while they're on video chanting it. Of course, they'll tell you that they're only joking, but one has to wonder if they really are. When you have a group of people unironically wearing satanic merchandise, it's hard to not believe them when they say they're coming for children. Speaking of disasters, Joe Biden continues to be an unmitigated mess. Considering the continued disintegration of Joe's mind and the avalanche of Hunter Biden's crimes, are the Democrats done with Joe Biden? Is the stink around the Biden finally bad enough that they're going to retire him and swap in Gavin Newsom? It seems increasingly likely — maybe even by September. Nancy Pelosi says Republicans don't respect women, which is ironic coming from someone in the party that can't even define what a woman is. There's a new food craze taking over China: eating rocks. The Marches were ignited by the Death of SCLC local Jimmie Lee JacksonWhat did Jimmie Lee Jackson accomplish?Jimmie Lee Jackson, was a Vietnam veteran, Baptist deacon, activist and martyr of the Civil Rights Movement. Jackson, active in the fight for equal rights, had tried multiple times to register to vote in Alabama and was denied each time. When Jimmie Lee Jackson saw his frail 80-year-old grandfather rudely turned away from the registrar's office in 1962 after attempting to register to vote in Marion, Ala., the young man became angry. He knew he had to join the civil rights movement. On Feb. 18, 1965, he was among more than 200 people participating in a night march in Marion. Before they had walked a block, they were confronted by state troopers and the police chief, who ordered them to disperse. The marchers halted at the chief's order, and suddenly all the streetlights on the square went out. A black minister at the head of the march knelt to pray and was struck on the head by a trooper. Other troopers began swinging their clubs, and the marchers panicked, running for cover.Jackson and his mother huddled for safety in a café. When Jackson's grandfather entered the café bloodied and beaten, the young man tried to take him to a hospital. But they were quickly shoved back by a crowd of club-swinging troopers and terrified marchers. The troopers began knocking out the café lights with their clubs and beating people. Jackson saw a trooper strike his mother, and he lunged for the man. He was clubbed across the face and slammed him into a cigarette machine. Another trooper pulled his pistol and shot Jackson in the stomach. It was two hours before Jackson arrived at the hospital in Selma. He died eight days later.Forty-five years later, former trooper James Bonard Fowler pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to six months in jail but was released early due to poor health. Fowler claimed he shot Jackson in self-defense.At one of two services for Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told a crowd of 2,000: “Jimmie Lee Jackson's death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly to make the American dream a reality. His death must prove that unmerited suffering does not go unredeemed.”© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Three Swiss Guards have quit their posts, after refusing to comply with the Vatican's COVID-19 vaccine requirement. Three other guards have been suspended until they are fully vaccinated. The annual march took place in Warsaw Sunday. Marchers carried Poland's red and white flag, and posters with pro-life slogans. This was Poland's first March for Life since Poland's constitutional court ruled against abortion for fetal abnormalities. The ruling is expected to lead to a significant reduction in the number of abortions in Poland. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said the example of Catholic nuns, and his grandparents, taught him how to navigate and survive the negativity of a segregated world. He said they also taught him that all people were children of God. Thomas is only the second Black Supreme Court justice. He made his comments in a lecture hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The Vatican will require all visitors and personnel to show proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19, have recovered from COVID-19, or have tested negative for the virus. The new requirement will go into effect beginning October 1st. The rules will apply to any visitors in Vatican territory, including tourists, employees, and officials. In his Angelus address Sunday, Pope Francis said the true measure of success is what someone gives, not what someone has. The pope centered his reflection on the day's Gospel reading from Mark, in which Jesus declares that anyone who wishes to be first shall be last, and the servant of all. Francis said those who wish to follow Jesus must take the path of service. Today, the Church remembers several leaders in the Korean Catholic Church, who were martyred in the late 19th century.
go to 10:24 to skip my long-winded intro hi folks! it's 2021 now, i guess. and all the time i spent inside with anxiety over the past year has made me far more aware of how much i'm rapidly aging into irrelevance... perfect time for my 33 year old self to get back into the Cinderella story of a bunch of middle aged guys with families who hit the big time from the city of Dayton in my home state of Ohio.... Guided By Voices. specifically i focus on what i consider to be the strangest and most unique album of their catalog, 1993's Vampire on Titus. i also go over why i fell out with GBV over the years after my intense fandom of them in my late teens, my issues with the GBV fandom (aka cult), and the (many) things i feel like nuGBV has lost compared to the classic 90's lo-fi albums. here's a list of things referenced in this episode: Nuggets compilation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuggets:_Original_Artyfacts_from_the_First_Psychedelic_Era,_1965%E2%80%931968 info on Record Clubs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_club Scat Records: https://realscatrecords.com/ Closer You Are: The Story of Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/37506059-closer-you-are Self-inflicted Aural Nostalgia podcast episode on Vampire on Titus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h0QXtssTG0 Penny Fractions newsletter: https://www.getrevue.co/profile/pennyfractions Future of Music Coalition: https://twitter.com/future_of_music Liz Pelly: https://lizpelly.com/ AND MY PATREON: http://www.patreon.com/ellaguro all songs used in this episode are by Guided By Voices: "Club Molluska" from Same Place The Fly Got Smashed "Dusted" from the Fast Japanese Spin Cycle EP "Motor Away" from the Crying Your Knife Away live album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSJfeNKLbx0 "No. 2 in the Model Home Series" from Vampire on Titus "Donkey School" from Vampire on Titus "Wondering Boy Poet" from Vampire on Titus "'Wished I Was A Giant'" from Vampire on Titus Tim Heidecker on GBV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfG8nEhNMhk "The Best of Jill Hives" from Earthquake Glue "Expecting Brainchild", "Superior Sector Janitor X", "Dusted", "Marchers in Orange", "Sot", "World of Fun", "Jar of Cardinals" "E-5", "Gleemer (The Deeds of Fertile Jim)", "What About It", and "Non-Absorbing" from Vampire on Titus "Don't Stop Now" from King Shit & The Golden Boys "Superior Sector Janitor X" (again) "The Old Grunt" from Mag Earwhig! We ask why police suddenly left all their tear gas and rubber bullets at the office while Trump supporters took to the streets for the Million MAGA March in Washington, DC. Core organizer for BLM DC April Goggans, journalist Chuck Modiano, and TRNN investigative reporters Taya Graham and Stephen Janis join Kim Brown for the discussion.
Sunday worship and our Monday work desperately need to inform and impact each other but they often seem like worlds apart. Dr Matthew Kaemingk joins us to discuss his forthcoming book Work and Worship: Reconnecting Our Labor and Liturgy and traces work/working/worship in ancient Israel, labor/liturgy in the eary Church, and how we can intentionally, and naturally, bring them together in our time. What are you doing right now? Are you eating? Listening to a podcast? Out for a run or a walk? Heading home from work? Ready to fall asleep? Maybe you are intentionally doing something to nourish your heart, your body, your mind— your self. Maybe some combination of all of the above. I'm writing at home, not thinking about safety. Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor were doing something ordinary when they were killed. Ahmaud was out for a run, Breonna was asleep. Their lives and deaths bring to mind too many other Black Americans and people of color doing ordinary things in America while facing increasing racial injustice and fear. Almost 65 years ago Rosa Parks wanted to do something ordinary too— sit in her seat on the bus home from work. Despite many decades since the modern civil rights movement, more attention is needed particularly from white and privileged christian communities who have been uneducated and silent. Remembering Rosa Parks gives us an opportunity to learn and to pay attention to both history and current events. She is relevant in both. It does not need to be Black History Month to focus on Rosa Parks. It does not need to be February. We need Rosa Parks this summer and in every season. Her voice teaches us to be more fully human, honor and love God, and all human beings as ourselves. Rosa Parks invites us to listen, stretch, to become collaborators and to work for justice for everybody. FIRST MOTHER Roll. Roll, Rosa. Roll down, Rosa. Roll down where wheels roll on, Cleveland Avenue bus. Move. Move on, Mother. Move on back. Move back as this driver orders, Montgomery Police bust. Rosa rides the dented yellow, green and white bus home from work where she sews dignified defiance into every garment. Rosa Louise McCauley Parks rides. Sees through sound glasses in 1955, sensible dignity any day in the way she inhabits her rightful vinyl seat. First of December this mother is due. Tonight, she sits unmoved, no stopping here. So still, Rosa. Accepts deep breaths of arrest, receives this moment thrust upon her. Constant kicking, labor, pains, screaming. Undeserved delivery. Giving birth to a boy- cott, Rosa Parks, forbearing mother. Twelve years ago when that same bus driver pushed her off that bus, rain, not justice, rolled down. An ever-flowing stream ran over her, walking, buttoned up topcoat, soaked. What patience courage carries. The face that stops hundreds of busses, moves thousands of feet. Do nothing and change everything. Down the road for such a time as this, Rosa. Awaken the pastor, whose dream will preach. Feel an honest presence. Marchers swelling like an emotional river still. So many motherless. Stillborn, are too many children of God. Console, Rosa. Let my people roll. So far and we are not there yet. Go down, Rosa. Even so, Rosa. This is the long way home.
