Saint John Paul II's legacy is monumental, inside and outside the Catholic Church — one of the reasons why many think he should be officially named John Paul “the Great,” alongside Leo the Great (440-461), Gregory the Great (590-604) and Nicholas the Great (850-867). He was great, even outside the Church, because of his role in international affairs — helping catalyze the collapse of Soviet communism, resisting efforts by worldly superpowers to impose international human rights abuses, and giving hope and courage to suffering peoples everywhere. He visited 129 countries, traveling more than 700,000 miles — more than all of his predecessors combined and nearly three times the distance of a round trip to the moon.

“Healing happens organically as love is being expressed,” says Dr. Bob Schuchts of the John Paul II Healing Center    In this mini-retreat in a podcast, Dr. Bob shares how important it is to listen and be attentive to what spiritual practices the Holy Spirit is drawing you to this Lent--so the Divine Physician can bless you with healing.   As we look at our patterns of sin and chronic wounds we have carried with us for a long time, we must remember God sees us in our wholeness. And remember that we cannot fix our own brokenness; however, we can name it and bring it to Jesus for healing.    Dr. Bob shares stories, including when he had a panic attack and realized his own need for healing. As Dr. Bob engaged in the healing process, he learned that beneath his anxiety was abandonment from his parents' divorce. The pain in his heart began to heal through the love of God and he forgave his parents. Healing is a life-long journey that we all need to engage in.     Pope Benedict XVI said, “Whoever truly wishes to heal man must see him in his wholeness and must know that his ultimate healing can only be God's love.”    May we bring all of ourselves to God this Lent, to discover the healing touch of The One who loves us completely.    Learn more about Dr. Bob Schuchts, the John Paul II Healing Center and more opportunities for healing at https://jpiihealingcenter.org.

From the responsorial psalm: "Your right hand saves me. The LORD will complete what he has done for me; your kindness, O LORD, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands. In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord."A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 5:1-11,today's readings)After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.Luke describes the calling of the first disciples, namely Simon Peter, James, and John. Commenting on this passage, Saint John Paul II said, "Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." By saying this, he reminded us that God continually calls us to live a deeper, more purposeful life. Simon Peter's response to Jesus is an example of faith and humility; an experienced fisherman, Peter would have known well when and where to catch fish. Returning to the shore, Peter professes Jesus as Lord, not fit to be in his presence. Jesus says to him, calling him to his mission of evangelization: "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men."God, help me understand that you dwell in depth and mystery yet are ever present in the sacraments of the Church, especially in the real presence of the Eucharist. My own will, like Peter's, moves from what it knows and toward what it knows. Give me the grace to hear and understand your will in the depth of my heart and then act on it. Guide me away from the mediocrity of determining that my life's purpose is self-circumscribed. From the deep, unseen places where you are and through the body and blood of Jesus, guide me toward accepting your will and doing what you ask of me. Make clear to me, Lord, what it is you wish me for to do.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Agatha (d. 250), who died to defend her purity, in Catania, Sicily. Since ancient times, Agatha's virginal martyrdom has been commemorated on this date. Her purity and innocence commended her to young women in the Middle Ages, who frequently invoked her alongside the virgins Agnes and Lucy. In his 1994 letter to children, Saint John Paul II offered her as a saintly example for young people. After Quintanus, the governor of Sicily, tried in vain to force her to consent to sin, she was imprisoned. Quintanus turned from sensuality to cruelty and had her breasts cut off, but that night, Agatha was healed by St. Peter. She was then rolled over sharp stones and burning coals and finally taken to prison, where she died while praying. St. Agatha is one of seven women martyrs listed in the Roman Canon of the Mass: Saints Felicity, Perpetual, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, and Anastasia. Hope for Right Now: A Walking with Purpose Podcast

Welcome to Season 2 of Hope for Right Now: A Walking with Purpose Podcast. This week Lisa and Laura kick off the new year with a brand new four-part series: The Feminine Genius. Saint John Paul II coined the phrase “feminine genius” in his open letter titled, Mulieris Dignitatem (On the Dignity and Vocation of Women). In it he writes:  “The Church gives thanks for all the manifestations of the feminine ‘genius' which have appeared in the course of history, in the midst of all peoples and nations; she gives thanks for all the charisms which the Holy Spirit distributes to women in the history of the People of God, for all the victories which she owes to their faith, hope and charity: she gives thanks for all the fruits of feminine holiness.”  There are four components in the feminine genius: receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity. Each week, through the writings of Saint Edith Stein, personal stories, and the Word of God, Lisa and Laura will unpack one of these components. This week, it's all about receptivity!  So ladies, are you ready to unleash your feminine genius? Grab your Bible and let's go! Open your Heart to our key quote. Saint Edith Stein: The world doesn't need what women have, it needs what women are. Open your Bible to Scriptures referenced in this episode. James 1:6: But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. How can you be more receptive to others around you? Maybe it's putting your phone away and looking your people in the eyes? Maybe it's striking up a conversation in the pharmacy line? Maybe it's waiting up for someone to come home or inviting someone into your home? This week, choose one way you will intentionally be receptive to those around you. Show mentions. The tireless efforts of Pope Saint John Paul II gave us the timeless Theology of the Body – and that has provided sound philosophical grounding from which to handle the ever shifting sands of moral turpitude of our modern era. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Dr. Deborah Savage discuss the Catholic Church's teachings on marriage, family, and human sexuality, particularly in the context of the challenges posed by the sexual revolution. They explore the importance of lived experience in understanding these teachings, the implications of recent changes within the Pontifical Academy for Life, and the philosophical foundations laid by John Paul II. The discussion emphasizes the need for a balance between lived experience and objective truth, the role of self-governance, and the significance of virtue in achieving true freedom.   00:00 - The Catholic Church's Stance on Contraception 02:55 - The Role of Lived Experience in Theology 05:49 - Response to the Pontifical Academy for Life's Document 09:05 - The Impact of the Sexual Revolution 11:58 - Bridging Theory and Experience 14:52 - Understanding Human Acts and Impulses 18:12 - John Paul II's Anthropology and Personalism 20:51 - The Importance of Self-Governance 24:03 - The Personalist Norm vs. Kant's Categorical Imperative 26:55 - The Path to Virtue and True Freedom 30:08 - Real Stories from the Frontlines   Dr. Deborah Savage joined the Theology faculty during the 2021-22 academic year, having taught both philosophy and theology at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for the previous thirteen years.
