Though Jesus preached in parables that still captivate us, not every story told in a homily has a similarly lasting impact. The Rev. Christopher Clohessy shares how preachers can craft stories that linger long after Mass is over. This week on “Preach,” host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., is joined by another South African priest. Chris is a priest of the Archdiocese of Cape Town who now teaches Arabic and Islamic theology at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic studies in Rome. In his homily, Chris harnesses the technique of narrative storytelling to illuminate what the work of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, looks like in our lives. In the conversation after the homily, Ricardo and Chris talk about the power of telling stories in homilies—and the art of telling a good one. Chris says that a successful story starts with a character with whom the congregation can relate, and it comes alive through “word pictures,” images that will stick in listeners' minds after the homily concludes. “You want to be able to get people involved, not in their listening, but in their imagination and in their emotions,” Chris explains. “I think a good emotional response to a sermon is a very important thing because in the Gospels, people respond emotionally to Jesus.” Read Chris' homily. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? You think, well, I don't feel like that. I'm feeling great right now. But somewhere, someone else is feeling that way and maybe I pray this Psalm, not for myself, but for someone else. And I can enter into their experience or conversely, if I'm feeling, oh, it was a terrible day and I'm, oh I'm so distraught, everything's going wrong! I flip open the page and it's, you know, come into our joy to the Lord, serve the Lord of gladness. Well, I don't feel that way but maybe someone else does and maybe I need to get out of my own self. We implode into ourselves too much. Maybe I should pray for someone else, and not just for myself. So we lose ourselves in the Psalms, and they're better. It's nice when the Psalm expresses what I feel. It's better when it doesn't, because then it stretches me out of my own ego, and that's what we need to do.---In this episode, listen to Cardinal Thomas Christopher Collins being interviewed by well-known journalist Lorna Dueck. Jesus answers as follows: "Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the Scriptures not the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they take neither wife nor husband, but are like angels in heaven" (Mk 12:24-25). With audience #64 of St John Paul II's Theology of the Body" as their guide, Linda and Jack explore the third part of the triptych that paints a vivid picture of marriage as the image of God, and how it directs us to our ultimate union with God, our final destiny. We'll then take a leap back in history to the institution of the Pontifical Institute for Marriage and the Family under John Paul II and the assassination attempt on his life. And make no mistake, there's a prophesied battle over marriage and family raging between God and Satan, and you'll feel its tremors in our society and culture. Did you know that the advent of no-fault divorce in the 80s had a profound impact on family values? We'll connect the dots for you. Finally, we'll navigate the innate human desire for God, as espoused in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Listen as we dissect how this desire is being distorted in our culture today. This is audience 64 if you are following us in Pope John Paul II's masterful work; Man and Woman He Created Them, A Theology of the Body.We need your support to expand our Parish out reach. The impact of Jesus: he changes everything, he changes us. The first to receive him were his mother and those disciples who walked with him in Galilee and Judea. They were there when he entered Jerusalem the final time. The twelve were there when gave his body and his blood in the Upper Room, they went with him to Gethsemane, then, one by one, they left his side. Mary and John were nearby when he was crucified, the others were distant. He was buried, and they were alone. On Holy Saturday, they remained in a space of sorrow and shame, of shock and of trauma. The crucifixion was behind them, the Resurrection yet to come. What did they think, how did they feel, what and how did they remember in that liminal space between memory and hope? That is the setting of an original composition of the Notre Dame Folk Choir called The Passion. The composer of this astounding work is my guest today. J.J. Wright is the director of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. He holds a doctoral degree in conducting from Notre Dame's sacred music program, prior to which he studied at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music and interned with the Sistine Chapel Choir. He started working on The Passion with the Notre Dame Children's Choir and carried that work into the Notre Dame Folk Choir a few years ago. The final work of The Passion emerged from a broad collaboration with other artists and, perhaps most important of all, with his own students, the members of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. The Passion is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and other audio outlets, as well as on the Notre Dame Folk Choir's YouTube channel, where there is a recording of the live performance of The Passion from Notre Dame on Good Friday, 2023. J.J. joins me to talk about the space of memory that this work draws us into, the creative process of music and prayer and pilgrimage, and the way in which the impact of Jesus never ceases, as the Paschal Mystery is the center of our lives as Christians, today and always. Throughout the ages philosophers and sages, seekers and spiritual leaders, artists and scientists have sought and in a few instances also taught how to connect with the divine. There are different ways to do so and a very powerful one is also one that has been suppressed in many cultures and times: I am talking about the concept and expression of Eros.Eros is much more than sexual love or desire. Eros is a bridge to the sublime and can help us achieve transcendence. And, it is also intimately tied to the power of feminine sexuality, which, coincidentally, also has been suppressed for millenia.Today's guest, Dr. Joanna Kujawa has gone on a quest to unveil the mystery and history of Eros and find an answer to some intriguing questions in her book The Other Goddess: Mary Magdalene And The Goddesses Of Eros And Secret Knowledge. Is there a lineage of goddesses that claims the evolutionary power of female sexuality? And if so, why were they pushed to the shadows and demeaned as harlots? Was Mary Magdalene one of them, and what were her teachings? Looking into esoteric traditions that celebrated the Goddess and her art of sexual alchemy, Dr. Kujawa set out on a detective journey and discovered that Mary Magdalene stands at the center of this investigation. And whether looking at Mary Magdalene, Sophia, Aphrodite, Inanna, Hathor, Isis, or the goddesses of Hinduism, Dr. Kujawa's findings about the archetype of The Other Goddess, as the bearer of the mysteries of sexual alchemy that ends the division between sexuality and spirituality are not only fascinating, but have the potential to redefine how we think and how we express spiritually and sexually. In this episode with Dr. Kujawa, you'll discover:-What is a "spiritual detective"?...03:45-How Dr. Kujawa discovered her femininity by revering Mary Magdalene...08:33-Why women are groomed to suppress the power of their sexual energy...13:40-Why we're fed the lie that the sensual element of sex is the only element there is...17:01-The difference between Eros and sexuality...19:45-The differences between the three primary tantras...26:24-Who was Mary Magdalene, and why is she significant in history?...33:40-Why Joanna believes Mary Magdalene was the primary disciple of Jesus...43:20-The resurfacing of the lineage of goddesses in the public psyche...49:00-How to embrace the "divine femininity" in the modern age...1:00:30-And much more!Resources mentioned:WEBSITEJoanna's personal websiteBOOKThe Other GoddessGuest's social handles:LinkedInFacebookDr Joanna Kujawa is an author, scholar, and spiritual detective. Dr Joanna Kujawa is an author, scholar, spiritual detective. She is the author of the book The Other Goddess Mary Magdalene and the other goddesses of Eros and Secret Knowledge How is the lineage of the Goddess now resurfacing in our collective experience of spirituality? My guest is Dr Joanna (Ku-Yah-Vah) Kujawa, the author of The Other Goddess: Mary Magdalene and the Goddesses of Eros and Secret Knowledge. She is a scholar, and spiritual detective, who received her BA and MA from the Pontifical Institute for Medieval Studies in Canada, and her Ph.D. from Monash University in Australia. As an active academic for over 20 years, Joanna uses her scholarly training to investigate spirituality and sexuality topics, writing for academic publications on spiritual travel, plus has had her short stories and essays published in various media and prestigious anthologies, including Best Australian Stories, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, She Rises. Dr. Kujawa is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Goddess Studies: https://www.JoannaKujawa.com/ Is there a lineage of goddesses that claims the evolutionary power of female sexuality? And if so, why were they pushed to the shadows and demeaned as harlots? Was Mary Magdalene one of them, and what were her teachings? Looking into esoteric traditions that celebrated the Goddess and her art of sexual alchemy, Dr. Joanna Kujawa sets out on a detective journey to answer these questions to discover Mary Magdalene stands at the center of this investigation. Learn about her portrayal in the gnostic gospels as a teacher in her own right and Jesus' intimate partner, the possibility of her life as an alchemist in Egypt, and her last years in Southern France. Find out if Mary Magdalene was the same person as Mary the Prophetess of Egypt and her connection to the mysterious Cathars, Black Madonnas, and Knights Templar. Whether looking at Mary Magdalene, Sophia, Aphrodite, Inanna, Hathor, Isis, or the goddesses of esoteric Hinduism, Dr. Kujawa finds the archetype of The Other Goddess-the bearer of the mysteries of sexual alchemy that ends the division between sexuality and spirituality. The Other Goddess is currently being translated into Mandarin. So join us as our guests, Karen, explains how God becomes more real to us when we make our relationship with Him more real.
One million children experience their parents’ divorce each year. Two-thirds of them who were regularly attending a Church or synagogue at the time report that no one reached out to them at that time. Parents’ divorce increases their children’s chance of divorce by 40%. And barely any Catholic dioceses have an outreach for it. My friend Sarah Hart travels to speak at healing retreats and blogs with the ministry Life-Giving Wounds, one of the few Catholic ministry outreaches to adult children of divorced parents. As a graduate of the JPII Institute for Marriage and Family, and herself a child of divorced parents, Sarah has helped many people give voice to their pain and find healing. Interview with the Senior Threat Intelligence Analyst from Insikt Group, Recorded Future into the RedDelta Report, an analysis of how the Vatican and the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong were among several Catholic Church-related organizations targeted by RedDelta, a Chinese-state sponsored threat activity group tracked by Insikt Group. From early May 2020, this series of suspected network intrusions also targeted the Hong Kong Study Mission to China and the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), Italy. These organizations have not been publicly reported as targets of Chinese threat activity groups prior to this campaign. These network intrusions occurred ahead of the anticipated September 2020 renewal of the landmark 2018 China-Vatican provisional agreement, a deal which reportedly resulted in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) gaining more control and oversight over the country’s historically persecuted “underground” Catholic community. In addition to the Holy See itself, another likely target of the campaign includes the current head of the Hong Kong Study Mission to China, whose predecessor was considered to have played a vital role in the 2018 agreement. The suspected intrusion into the Vatican would offer RedDelta insight into the negotiating position of the Holy See ahead of the deal’s September 2020 renewal. The identified RedDelta intrusions feature infrastructure, tooling, and victimology overlap with the threat activity group publicly reported as Mustang Panda (also known as BRONZE PRESIDENT and HoneyMyte). This includes the use of overlapping network infrastructure and similar victimology previously attributed to this group in public reporting, as well as using malware typically used by Mustang Panda, such as PlugX, Poison Ivy, and Cobalt Strike. This podcast is a report walk through with the lead analyst and covers the background, overview of Catholic Church intrusions, other targeted organizations and the infrastructure analysis. In this campaign, RedDelta favored three primary IP hosting providers, and used multiple C2 servers within the same /24 CIDR ranges across intrusions. Importantly, we also cover the key network defense recommendations corporations should be applying to deter and prevent such attacks. Recorded 27 August between Sydney and London in recognition of Recorded Future being Platinum supporter of the Cyber Risk Meetups for 2020 - 2021

Staging Magic in English Catholic College Drama Ushaw Lecture by Professor Alison Shell (University College London) --About the Lecture Dramatised magic was popular in early modern theatre, and never more so than within the dramatic corpus of the English Catholic colleges set up in continental Europe after the Reformation. Many of these colleges were controlled by the Jesuit order, who played a major role in developing stage technology in this era. Written for performance by the young scholars at these colleges, these plays constitute a kind of children’s literature, and frequently draw on magical themes. They have a didactic message, pitting devil-worshippers against followers of Christ, and the fantastic element must also have appealed to the schoolboy imagination. Audiences of these popular civic events, whether or not they could understand the Latin in which the plays were performed, would have enjoyed the opportunity for spectacle provided by maguses and conjuring tricks. This lecture is organised by the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Centre for Catholic Studies, Durham University, in conjunction with Ushaw College. --About the Speaker Alison Shell was educated at the North London Collegiate School and Oxford University (B.A./M.A. and D.Phil.). After a period as Rare Books Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects, Alison became a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow at UCL between 1994 and 1997. Her first permanent academic post was at the University of Durham, where she worked between 1997 and 2010. Alison is an editor for the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies’ series ‘Catholic and Recusant Texts in Early Modern England’. She reviews for the Times Literary Supplement, the Church Times and a number of academic journals. --About the Ushaw Lecture Series The Ushaw Lecture Series celebrates the cultural and research significance of the remarkable bibliographical, archival and material-cultural collections at Ushaw, and the wider history of which they are expressions. The lectures cover music, art, drama, poetry and literature, architecture, material-culture, politics, science and theology.

Did Lady Zainab (as) play a much greater role in Karbala than we know? How do her sentiments of leadership differ or compare to those of Western feminist movements in the post-modern era? Does free speech exist within any religion? Or, is it a luxury limited to believers in God? All this, and much, much more in our latest podcast featuring the world renowned Father Christopher Clohessy . Mohammed and Ahmed found Father Chris to be really cool - he is cultured, humble despite his global recognition, and incredibly intelligent. Having grown up in an Irish Catholic family in South Africa, he then pursued the study of religion. Father Christopher spent a year in Cairo, Egypt, studying Islamic studies as a Catholic priest, and then became aware of Imam Hussain (as). Since then, he learned of the battle of Karbala, and subsequently two of the most incredible personalities in world history - Lady Fatima (as) and Lady Zainab (as). Father Christopher has been one of the first academics to publish works in the English language on these two characters. He has lectured in communities worldwide, alongside his day-to-day work as a Professor in Shi'i studies at the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies in Rome.
