The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) has witnessed a substantial surge globally. However, the presence of these motorized vehicles on sidewalks poses a significant risk to pedestrians. A recent practice paper published in CMAJ describes the case of a 68-year-old woman who suffered serious injuries while walking on a city sidewalk after being hit by an e-scooter traveling at approximately 30 km/h. While the authors of the paper recognize e-scooters as a popular, efficient and green form of transportation, they argue effective policies are needed to mitigate risks associated with their use. On this episode, Drs. Blair Bigham and Mojola Omole speak with Zach Williams, the director of policy and government partnerships and Jamie Perkins the director of communications for Superpedestrian. Superpedestrian is an e-scooter company that spun off from the MIT Sensible City Lab. They discuss the necessary changes to urban infrastructure as well as the responsibilities of e-scooter providers to ensure safety for riders and pedestrians. The discussion then shifts to Catherine McKenney, a former Ottawa city councilor and mayoral candidate, who proposed substantial investments in biking infrastructure during their campaign. They argue that debates about safe urban transit have become too polarized and that it is not a matter of being for or against cars, but rather about finding effective solutions to make transportation safe and efficient for all users.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Buon ascolto!
The city announced that nearly 4000 E-Scooters are returning to streets next month. Divvy, Lime, Superpedestrian and Spin are the providers responsible for a safe, smooth, and equitable rollout. Speaking of rollout, a new casino is coming to Chicago, and community meetings were held this week in the South Loop and River West. There's also a new bill in the Illinois House that, if passed, would require life rings along the lakefront, plus a new reimbursement program for Chicagoans buying security cameras. City Cast Chicago Host Jacoby Cochran catches up on these stories and more with CBS Morning Reporter Marissa Parra and CW Chicago TV Host Brandon Pope. And we've got some great moments of joy, including Karaoke Storytellers, Art on the Mart (which starts tomorrow), and Pope's new WCIU and Block Club Chicago TV show, “On The Block.” And don't miss Marissa's story about the friendship between a trash collector and a 3-year-old in South Loop! Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges facing the footwear industry. Shoes can contain up to forty different types of material, and once in the landfill, the rubber foams, plastics, and adhesives are likely to take hundreds of years, if not forever to decompose. Today's guest, Noah Swartz, is a fourth-generation bootmaker and the co-founder of Erem, a company with the goal of making performance footwear that is 100% biocircular. Biocurcular means that their desert boot uses only materials with proven paths back to nature and they provide each Erem product a seamless and responsible next life. Erem was born out of Noah's personal love for the desert, a conviction that outdoor gear can be made to higher environmental standards, and a belief that a company can positively and forever impact people, place, and Planet. Together with his father Jeff, Noah is innovating in product design, materials, and supply chain and reimagining what the life of a product looks like in order for it to leave a smaller footprint on our planet. About Noah Noah Swartz founded Erem because he couldn't find gear built for the desert landscapes that he loves. A fourth-generation bootmaker who believes in business's capacity and responsibility to solve social and environmental challenges, Noah brings to Erem an insistence that it is possible to create products that deliver world-class desert performance and that positively impact the world. Before founding Erem, Noah worked for iconic and disruptive brands including Beyond Meat, Modern Meadow, and Superpedestrian, and as an investment analyst at Gratitude Railroad. Noah grew up in the outdoor industry through The Timberland Company, which was founded, owned, and operated by his family until its sale to the VF Corporation in 2011. Noah completed three semesters at Harvard Business School before pursuing Erem full-time. He has a bachelor's degree in English literature from Columbia University. He and his wife, Raquel, love traveling, particularly to places where they can hike in the desert and go surfing in the same day. Scooters and Smoke-Filled Rooms — Greg Lindsay chats with Superpedestrian’s Paul White by CoMotion
Today Oliver interviews Paul Steely White, head of Policy at Link by Superpedestrian. We had Assaf Bidermaan, the CEO of Superpedestrian on last year to talk about their new scooter, but that was before they launched Link and recently won one of the Seattle scooter permits. The second mover advantage in this space continues to become clearer and it was great to dig into this. Paul has been around the micromobility/bike advocacy traps a long time first at Transportation Alternatives, then Bird and now Link, and like many others we’ve had on, is a bit of an OG of the space. We hope you enjoyed this as much as we did.- His background at Transportation Alternatives, Bird and now Superpedestrian- How and why Superpedestrian decided to start LINK, and the importance of the feedback cycle in product development- What LINK does differently in it’s vehicle including the importance of being able to do granular onboard vehicle maps and how their vehicle intelligence and operations allow them to be profitable with only one ride per day.- What he thinks Bird and Lime did wrong.- The New York City RFP for scooters and what they’re seeing in the space- What he is seeing with LINK and cities now in terms of what they want for their operators- The question of infrastructure, and his experience working with Transportation Alternatives and experts like Donald Shoup to change street space allocation.- How it helps to be a second mover in the space- The emergence of debt in new rounds of scooter funding and how the question of insurance is changing as the industry matures.
In this episode, we talk with Graham Gullans, VP of Business and Corporate Development at Superpedestrian, a company that makes intelligent electric scooters and bikes and now operates a shared micromobility service called Link. We discuss the use of vehicle intelligence to improve safety, reliability and compliance for shared scooters and how Superpedestrian is taking on some of the biggest challenges that shared micromobility operators face. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/smarter-cars/support
Adam Greenstein, Manager of Government Partnerships at Superpedestrian, joins us on this week’s episode to discuss:- What sets the company apart from existing scooter companies- Engineering the most hi-tech electric scooter- Working with cities to implement mobility programs- Defining success metrics for these programs- Helping small businesses reopen faster and cheaper Learn more at: https://superpedestrian.com Follow @ingoodhands on twitter and let us know who you want to see on the show!
In today’s episode Oliver interviews Assaf Biderman, CEO of SuperPedestrian, about his background founding the MIT Senseable Cities Lab and then Superpedestrian. Assaf has been thinking about micromobility longer than most anyone we’ve had on the podcast - this was a fun and very illuminating interview. This conversation convinced Oliver that the ‘intelligence’ that can be infused into micromobility devices has far deeper implications than first thought, especially for driving down operational costs and improving vehicle longevity.Specifically we dig into:- The context for why micromobility is such a boon compared to the other transport options that cities can consider for moving people.- His history founding the Senseable Cities Lab and their early work- How that led to founding SuperPedestrian, and the early lessons with the amazing Copenhagen Wheel- The pivot they've made into scooters, the important variables for the next generation of scooter hardware and why they believe that these need- Why Assaf believes that Superpedestrian's intelligent 'nervous system' combines with mechanical improvements will drop operational costs by over 50% for operators.- The implications of their approach on thinking of their product as a 'computing platform' and why they see their model as a hardware + SaaS business.- Their supply chain structure and costs, and why their entirely proprietary approach can actually make componentry cheaper.- Their recent $20m raise, and what they're planning to do with the money. It's one of the densest and most interesting discussions to date - hope you enjoy!
