Joining Jill and Doron on the 35th episode of the podcast, the seventeenth and penultimate of our second season, to tell us their story are Dr. Alison Fisch Katz and Sally Green Wallis, BFFs - for half a century and counting - from the northern provinces of England who attended Carmel from 1973 to 1980. Alison Fisch grew up in Leeds. She studied for her BA and MA in English Literature at Bar Ilan University in Israel and completed her PhD at the University of Leeds. A former lecturer at Bar Ilan and the Open University in Israel, she eventually became Senior Lecturer and Head of the Languages and General Studies Department at the Azrieli College of Engineering in Jerusalem - a position she has held for 14 years. Alongside her academic career, Alison has developed a business as a Personal and Rehab Fitness Trainer. She lives in Ra'anana and has been married to Israeli-born Geri for almost 40 years. They have two grown sons, Tomer and Assaf. Sally Green grew up in Grimsby. After Carmel, she briefly attended Manchester Polytechnic before moving to London with a passion to work in travel, which is how she met her husband of 38 years, Howard. She is now a director and shareholder at a bespoke travel agency in Radlett. Sally has three children in their thirties, and four grandchildren, three of whom were born in a five month span earlier this year. Hear Alison and Sally talk about the kashrut of sausage rolls, the evolution of their northern accents, the letter that nearly undid their friendship, the playwright who attended his play's opening night at Carmel, meeting the late Ted Heath, and how they maintained their bond over 50 years. Thank you, Dr. Alison Fisch Katz and Sally Green Wallis, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Alison's and Sally's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of Sally's late brother Michael Green, who inspired her to go to Carmel, and was a pupil himself from 1967 to 1973. He worked in real estate, and was married with one daughter. Sadly, he passed away from a heart attack in 2012 at the age of 53 in Watford Hospital. This week the Russian-born Illusion Body Artist, Vika Bren. Vika says: “At the heart of my work is the fascinating interplay between reality and illusion. Each piece I create is a visual journey, where things aren't always as they first appear. My illustrations and paintings often feature subjects that seem to shift, transform, or disappear depending on the viewer's perspective.” Vika's talent has attracted millions of followers on social media making her something of a rock star in the world of body art illusion. But her versatility as an artist is no surprise given her lifelong flair for creativity. Vika was born on New Year's Day, 1989 in Moscow. She is the oldest of five children whose parents Marina and Dimitri were both architects and also talented artists. When Vika was still a toddler the family moved to Israel and from the age of seven to eleven she had a private art teacher. After that she said she has been completely self taught. Once she left school she tried her hand at graphic designing but soon realized that this would not fulfill her artistically. During the Covid pandemic, Vika saw the opportunity to develop her art work online and even through two wars she has managed to establish herself with a global reputation. Through the daily threat of rockets and background of sirens, Vika works in a converted garage, which has become her studio. She will be a visiting artist at Art Basel Miami Beach on December 6, 2024. Vika lives in Shavei Zion, Israel with her partner, the musician Assaf, and daughters Yahel and Lia. WHAT MAKES AN ARTIST?, 10min., Lebanon Directed by Raafat Abou Daka “What Makes an Artist” is an introspective documentary that delves into the lives of the internationally renowned sculptor brothers Assaf, exploring the unexpected paths that led them to their craft. The film peels back the layers of their fame to reveal the human side of their journey, offering a rare glimpse into their early struggles and the alternate careers they nearly pursued. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? The idea that people always strive to create something special and achieve a goal. Whether an artist or a doctor, everyone wants to stand out and prove themselves, often to their parents. I believe this is a universal drive, and I wanted to capture it from the perspective of someone famous—showing that even they were once like us. What were your initial reactions to the audience feedback? I was happy to hear the details they shared—it showed they were really focused while watching the film. From exploding pagers to airstrikes and a possible ground invasion, what are the IDF's goals in Lebanon? Everyone knows that on October 7, Hamas perpetrated a horrible, genocidal attack on Israel. In response to that attack, Israel committed itself to neutralizing the military threat from Gaza. On October 8, not wanting to seem any less committed to the eradication of the Jewish state, the Lebanon-based terror group Hizballah began to shoot rockets and missiles into Israel's northern territories. Nearly a full year later, Israeli towns and villages within Hizballah rocket range remain empty, and many tens of thousands of Israelis live as evacuees in hotels and apartments. Week after week, month after month, the rockets from Lebanese territory have not stopped. Israel has conducted occasional defensive operations, but about one week ago, the Israelis unmistakably increased the tempo and intensity of their own attacks, taking the fight to the territory of the adversary rather than continuing to bear its missile barrage. The retired Israeli brigadier general and defense strategist, Assaf Orion, joins Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver to discuss this situation. Assaf is the Liz and Mony Rueven International Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and a prolific author and thinker not only on the security architecture of the Middle East and Israeli military planning and strategy, but also on China and great-power competition. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

How does a leader evolve the business and their role for future time horizons? In this episode, Rich sits down with Assaf Resnick, CEO of BigPanda. Assaf's journey is anything but conventional—transitioning from venture capitalist at Sequoia Capital to founding a successful software company. He shares invaluable insights on fostering a first-team culture, maintaining differentiation in a competitive market, and mastering strategy iteration for long-term success.---------Key Quotes:“I've got a framework for my job description around people, strategy, execution, and cash which are four big buckets that you need to all be in good shape in order to succeed.”“Every six months or so, I sit down and I re-architect my CEO job description.I sit down and I start with a blank sheet of paper and I ask myself, Alright, what kind of CEO does this company need me to be right now? What was I doing that I don't need to be doing anymore? What do I need to start doing? And what does that mean for me in terms of, are there any skill gaps that I need to bridge? Are there any behavior gaps that I need to bridge? Are there any knowledge gaps that I need to bridge?”“When you get to a certain scale, you've really got to start thinking in 3 year horizons. When you start getting near $100 million business and above, that ship moves a little slower. And so you've really got to start layering on 3 year visions of where's the market going, how am I capitalized, what are the big bets I'm making. And then you have to think about how do you operationalize that strategy? How do you make sure that everyone in your company is really, really clear about where we're headed as a company and what does that mean for my team and for me personally. That's a lot of work.”“I want to make sure that it's really, really thoughtful and it's been prepared with all the stakeholders in mind. I do prefer that strategy is done in iteration. That's very important for me. So don't go into your cave and come back in two months and present to me and the executive staff. Here is my vision from Mount Olympus, because it could be all wrong. I'd rather someone come and create and make it an iterative process with myself and the stakeholders involved.”“You need to be really, really clear about your foundational differentiators. You need to be really, really clear about what is it that I'm doing that is fundamentally different from anything anyone else can get in the market. And that could be in your technology, that could be in your services. That could be in your go to market and you have to be really, really honest with yourself. Do I have meaningful differentiation and is that leading to really good outcomes? And if you don't, you have to go on a spiritual journey to figure out what is my vision to produce that significant differentiation?”Practice Makes Profit: Why differentiation is crucial to beat your competition and how to confirm your core of differentiation using the Differentiation Detector tool. League of Strategic Minds [listener question] What does it mean to be strategic, and how can I tell if a person really is strategic? Winsights: Ideas for AdvantageSam Palmisano, former CEO of IBM said, “The holy grail of strategic thinking is how do you come up with a business model that differentiates you, creates value for your customers, and puts you in a unique position in your industry?” When was the last time you and your team discussed how to best evolve your business model for the future? --------Time stamps:(01:04) Deep Dive Interview with Assaf Resnick(47:33) Practice Makes Profit(49:18) League of Strategic Minds (50:54) Winsights, Ideas for Advantage ---------Links:Submit a question for Rich to the League of Strategic Minds Assaf Resnick on LinkedInRich Horwath on LinkedInRich Horwath on YouTubeRich Horwath on InstagramStrategic Thinking Institute WebsiteInc. In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview Assaf Pashut, the Founder of Chefee Robotics. Assaf shared his entrepreneurial journey, which began in Israel and Silicon Valley, where he developed a love for food and business. His initial foray into entrepreneurship was as a swim instructor, which later led him to start a catering business called The Flying Falafel during his college years. Despite the success of his catering business, COVID-19 lockdowns forced Assaf to pivot, eventually leading him to create CHEFEE, a futuristic kitchen assistant capable of cooking a wide range of dishes autonomously.Assaf explained that the idea for CHEFEE came to him during the COVID-19 pandemic while he was in Tel Aviv. Bored and learning machine learning, he envisioned a kitchen that could cook meals on command. He quickly began prototyping, assembling a team, and eventually creating a working model within a year. Assaf also shared his experiences on Shark Tank, where the intense application and filming process tested his resilience and ingenuity. Despite the challenges, Assaf remains focused on delivering a versatile and user-friendly product. He targets health-conscious, busy individuals and premium Airbnb hosts as potential customers, aiming to revolutionize home cooking with CHEFEE's innovative technology.Witness how passion for food and technology drives Assaf Pashut's groundbreaking work in this episode of The First Customer!Guest Info:Chefee Roboticshttps://www.chefeerobotics.com/Assaf Pashut's LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/assaf-pashut/Connect with Jay on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jayaigner/The First Customer Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thefirstcustomerpodcastThe First Customer podcast websitehttps://www.firstcustomerpodcast.comFollow The First Customer on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/company/the-first-customer-podcast/
