With the end of 2023 came the demise of Hyperloop One and, for some, the end of the futuristic tech's potential to disrupt commercial high-speed travel. However, many players remain in the game, including Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT).Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
While Marketplace’s Lily Jamali was at CES last week in Las Vegas, she took her first ride on the Vegas Loop, built by Elon Musk’s the Boring Co. In 2013, Musk floated the concept of a hyperloop as a way for people to travel long distances at superfast speeds via pods in vacuum-sealed tubes. The Vegas Loop, as Lily found out, is not that. Developing actual hyperloop technology is hard and costly. Just ask Hyperloop One, a startup that recently shut down after a decade of trying. Lily recently spoke with Bloomberg’s Sarah McBride about Hyperloop One’s demise and what it means for the tech sector’s larger ambition to create hyperloop transport systems.

Hyperloop One, a transportation technology startup that focused on commercializing high-speed travel through tube-encased lines, has reportedly shut down.Bloomberg cited an anonymous source familiar with the situation who claimed that Hyperloop had laid off most of its employees and is attempting to sell its remaining assets, including machinery and a test track. The report added that the startup closed its office in Los Angeles and set December 31 as the last date of employment for its remaining workers.According to Bloomberg's source, Hyperloop will transfer its intellectual property to DP World, a logistics company with a majority stake in the startup.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
Now I've been going at Hyperloop's jugular for years now, and suffice to say it remains total and utter nonsense unworthy of any technological debate and only marginally worth one at all. We all know it is guff intended to both delay real railway solutions and to allow car and plane people a seat at governmental and regulatory "mass transit" tables. Yet Hyperloop refuses to die. Even when probably its most well-known company has now bitten the dust, entirely as predicted. Well, we'll dig into why this might be, and will take a look at the current status of all of the Hyperloop players. Join LIVE at 8pm UK time to get stuck in, ask questions, and hope collectively that 2024 is the year Hyperloop finally snuffs it. Also to toast what is technically our 200th episode!

Hyperloop One is shutting down, Sony won't take away your PlayStation-bought Discovery shows after all, and Arturia just released a free unison-based multi-fx plugin. It's Friday, Dec. 22nd and this is Engadget News.
The company that touted itself as the next evolution in transportation is shutting down. Hyperloop One raised more than $450 million since emerging in 2014, on promises that its tube lines could carry cargo and people from place to place at speeds that could match airplanes. KCBS Radio's Nikki Medoro spoke with Bloomberg reporter Sarah McBride for more.

It takes guts to quit your job.But what if it was NASA? BOEING? Or Elon Musk's Hyperloop One?!Because that's exactly what Tanya Zakowich did.Tanya grew up with a fascination for space & like most kids, she wanted to be an astronaut. But unlike many, that fascination held even when she grew up, which is why she ended up studying mechanical engineering at Columbia. An internship in India helped her land a job at NASA, but she soon left for BOEING! Only to realise that at BOEING, she was just a cog in the wheel. She wasn't being challenged.Hence her third role at Elon Musk's Hyperloop One, where she lived the ultimate startup life. That is, until she realised that what she truly loved & cared about was her family and home in Singapore. So she gave it all up to return home. Now if you listen to this STIMY interview, you'll soon realise that Tanya is quite the go-getter!During the pandemic, she strategically launched a new TikTok channel where she teaches maths in a fun and interesting way. Within 6 months, she hit 1 million followers! Then quit for 2 months because of the toll it took on her mental health. She now stands at 1.9 million followers.
Casey Handmer is the founder of Terraform Industries (TI).TI is pioneering air-to-fuel technology to manufacture methane (natural gas) from the air. Currently, we continue to extract enormous quantities of hydrocarbons from the crust, burn them, and release carbon dioxide. Instead, TI wants to mine the air: displacing the transport of carbon from the crust to the atmosphere.Casey Handler has a PhD in theoretical astrophysics from Caltech, he's worked at Nasa's JPL and on Hyperloop One.His blog is at caseyhandmer.wordpress.comTwitter at @CJHandmerTerraform Industries website: terraformindustries.comFor a transcription and further references see multiverses.xyzMy thanks to Mark Shilton, Sam Westwood and Maciej Pomykala for help with this episode.

Here's a popular one from our archives: Today we're talking to Josh Clemente, Founder and President of Levels, a company producing wearable tech so users can track blood glucose in real time to maximize diet and exercise results. Josh is a veteran of both SpaceX and Hyperloop One, and his background is in designing life support systems for the next generation of space exploration. In today's episode, we discuss how that work inspired Josh to found Levels, why metabolic responses can vary so differently from one person to the next even with the same food, and what this means for actionable insights into strength and performance.
The episode you're about to hear is being hosted by our student fellows. Our Student Fellows are an interdisciplinary group, representing colleges and specializations across the University of Nebraska. Morgan Armstrong and Mitchell Clark spoke with Dr. Casey Handmer and Laura Cummings about the increase of satellites placed in lower earth orbit and how the congestion impacts space operations, communications, and our daily lives. Casey was born and raised in Australia, where he completed undergraduate studies in mathematics and physics. Emigrating to the US in 2010, he earned a PhD in theoretical physics, followed by stints at Hyperloop One and NASA JPL. In 2021 he founded Terraform Industries to capture atmospheric carbon and convert it into cheaper natural gas at gigaton scale. Laura is a Colorado native and University of Colorado graduate, with degrees in Astronomy and International Affairs. After transplanting to the East Coast, Laura earned her law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. Today, Laura is the Regulatory Affairs Counsel for Astroscale U.S., supporting policy advocacy and overseeing licensing of Astroscale's upcoming geostationary servicing satellite – LEXI.

(recorded live) Speeding through tubes at nearly the speed of sound; a former NASA systems engineer is helping make the future of transportation a reality. When Elon Musk first proposed the Hyperloop in 2012, most people fell into two camps: enthusiastic or skeptical. Imagine if you could accelerate pods to twice the speed of an airplane, using a technology that was immune to weather and collision free, with low power consumption, using near-vacuum-filled tubes and linear motors. The idea itself is actually more than two hundred years old, but it never made headway until Elon's announcement, and since then, several startups have run with the idea. And contrary to common wisdom, he has no direct involvement in any of them. One of these companies, headquartered in Downtown LA, attracted a huge investment from Richard Branson recently. They're now called Virgin Hyperloop One, and they were the first to demonstrate the concept, on a test track near Las Vegas. And this week we're talking with their Senior VP of Systems Engineering. Dr. Anita Sengupta started her career working for NASA, on pioneering space projects like the Mars Rover and the Cold Atom Laboratory. And then, Hyperloop One tapped her to coordinate all of the pieces for their very complex engineering puzzle. This episode was recorded live at the ArtCenter College of Design's BOLD conference. I was curious to hear the variety of challenges she's up against as they bring a once crazy idea to a full production system. I also wanted to learn what it was like to go from a very large, governmental organization like NASA, to a startup environment like Hyperloop. And we talk about what the innovator of the future might look like, and what we all should do to prepare.
