This third of a four part podcast series, brought to you in association with Cascale – the new name of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition – features a deep dive into how best to tackle carbon reductions in the global apparel industry and take a closer look at Cascale's shift from tools to programmes. Our host Philip Berman sits down with Sean Cady, vice president of global sustainability, responsibility and trade for VF Corporation, and also an elected board director for Cascale, and Andrew Martin, executive vice president of Cascale, for our latest podcast on decarbonising the fashion supply chain. Andrew Martin begins by outlining the importance of science-based targets to Cascale's work on decarbonisation and why it has set a requirement for its members to commit to these vital objectives. “Alignment and standardisation is part of our DNA,” he tells Phil Berman. He also highlights how a standardised approach to supply chain decarbonisation can reduce duplication, reduce confusion, and, importantly for Cascale's members, allows them to accelerate climate action together. “The membership requirements are there to provide the pathway – the route. And our role is to provide support,” he explains. Sean Cady agrees with the benefits offered by signing up to this collaborative approach. “These long term targets have inspired our global teams and all of our suppliers to act in a more purposeful way,” he says. “They (the targets) have also provided key measures aligned with VF's purpose, which ends with betterment of people and planet. “They drive internal annual work plans that are actionable, and these plans enable us to complete different projects that all ladder up to the methodical, incremental achievement of goals that are driving toward our 2030 targets.” Sean Cady also discusses the challenge of reducing scope 3 supply chain emissions which, he tells listeners, account for over 99% of VF's total emissions. “That's really where we have to focus,” he says. Phil Berman and his guests go on to discuss the critical role played by the Higg Index suite of tools, the current regulatory landscape, and the growing urgency of mitigating the impact of global climate change from a textile and apparel perspective.
Jeannie Renné-Malone, vice president of global sustainability for VF Corporation, and Tim Tensen, chief operating officer for Terra Genesis, join co-host Andie Wood to discuss regenerative agriculture and the transformative potential of their partnership in fueling product innovation and creating a sustainable supply chain. Learn how this initiative is paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future in the apparel and footwear industry.
In this episode of Storm⚡️Watch, we kick off with our usual intros and roundtable discussion between co-hosts Kimber Duke, Emily Austin, Glenn Thorpe, and boB Rudis. The show continues with a celebration of the FBI's confirmation that ALPHV has, indeed, been taken down. Moving on, a significant development this week is the effective implementation date of new SEC cyber reporting rules. These rules mandate that companies report "material cybersecurity incidents" to their investors. The rules went into effect this week, and VF Corporation was one of the first to report under these new guidelines. VF Corporation suffered a significant cyberattack on December 13, 2023, which has had a major impact on its operations, particularly its ability to fulfill orders during the holiday rush. We also discuss the hot-off-the-presses Xfinity breach announcement. Looking ahead, we delve into our predictions for the cybersecurity landscape in 2024 (make sure to check out our companion blog post, "Weathering 2024: Storm Watch Predictions for the Year Ahead"). In Tool Time, we also discuss ZOOM's Vulnerability Impact Scoring System (VISS), a resource that helps organizations assess their vulnerability to cyber threats. In the realm of recent vulnerabilities, we review Censys's blog post about the JetBrains TeamCity Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability (CVE-2023-42793). We also showcase a deep dive into the Apache Struts2 RCE vulnerability (CVE-2023-50164) in our blog post, "A Day in the Life of a GreyNoise Researcher." In another deep dive, Ron Bowes of GreyNoise Labs digs deep into F5 BIG-IP systems, where he explored how threat actors are baiting these systems. You can read all about those findings in our blog post, "Mining the Undiscovered Country with GreyNoise EAP Sensors: F5 BIG-IP Edition." We note three new tags, including a WordPress Backup Migration RCE (CVE-2023-6553), the 3CX CRM SQL Injection (CVE-2023-49954), and the WuzhiCMS SQL Injection (CVE-2018-11528). Finally, we wrap up with a discussion on the CISA's recent advisories. The first is a design alert urging manufacturers to eliminate default passwords, aptly titled "NO KEV!" The second is a joint advisory on Play Ransomware, providing crucial information to help organizations protect themselves against this threat. Brought to you this week by The Running Event Show Notes [00:02:15] Initially reluctant, Brian joined the track team in junior high and ended up enjoying it. [00:06:20] Brian started working at The Running Store at 16, now in the industry for 25 years. [00:08:26] Two shoe nerds experiment by putting a shoe in a toaster oven and turning it into a flat shoe. we'd always kind of been a little bit In the barefoot movement. we always like to finish our runs doing strides, you know, sprints barefoot on grass [00:10:12] Since we took out the drop in the shoe, we needed a name for this. And so we coined the term somehow it came up with, we coined the term zero drop. That was our, that was our concept. And so that was something that, uh, with the ultra brand we still use to this day is zero drop [19:55:09] I had the CEO of ICON, our ownership group, pulled me in one day and he said, Hey, Brian, you know, we really want to take ultra to the moon. We want you guys to be as big as you possibly can. And he said, we are, uh, we're looking at some investment groups, uh, for Altra. And I was like, what investment groups are you selling us? Like, well, not necessarily. Like we're going to be meeting with some people over the next two weeks. And I ended up meeting with VF a week later, not even knowing that my company was up for sale as founder and president of the president at the time. So it was a bit of a shock. We were not prepared for that acquisition [00:14:29] We all had different roles, but we helped each other in every aspect of the business. Golden focused on research and development, Jeremy on website marketing, and I ran the sell side. Golden and I collaborated on designing shoes and I tested them in trail races. [00:21:38] REI is our biggest account, specializing in Altras. Our focus is on run specialty and full service running stores. We also branch out online but primarily wholesale. [00:24:16] Angel investor Joe Morton and the narrator's father were influential mentors. Morton took a risk and had a positive influence, while the narrator's dad helped in desperate times. Favorite Books: One of my favorites is Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. It's an absolute gem just in terms of the way the brain works. So I find that those types of things very fascinating. I read all sorts of stuff. I'm just reading one right now, Boliviar of Simon Boliviar, who's just amazing, kind of like George Washington of South America. [00:32:14] Favorite Piece of Outdoor Gear: The Katadyn BeFree 0.6L Water Filter is a convenient way to carry and drink water directly from natural sources like rivers and lakes while fishing or trail running. It is durable, affordable, comes in different sizes, and has an effective filtering system. [00:34:52] Brian is active on social media and, open to feedback, loves the outdoor exercise industry. Lee Jeans is over a century old, but it's trying to remain hip with younger generations. One way it does this is with collaborations. For example, the apparel brand recently worked with the menswear company Brooklyn Circus on a new joint collection. The products are an update on some of Lee's oldest designs -- an attempt to bridge a heritage brand with something newer. According to Chris Waldeck, evp and co-chief operating officer at Lee's parent company Kontoor Brands, the philosophy behind these types of collaborations is to tell a story that one brand alone couldn't tell. "There's no connection between Brooklyn Circus and Lee," Waldeck. The strategy behind joining to disparate brands is "bringing them together to tell a fantastic story and to make some great products." Waldeck joined the Modern Retail Podcast this week and spoke about the denim brand's updated strategy. Lee has been around since 1889, but has had its ups and downs. Lee used to be a part of VF Corporation, which owns brands like North Face and Timberland. But in 2019, VF spun out both Lee and Wrangler to their own parent company Kontoor. Now, the company is focused on bringing Lee to new -- and younger -- shoppers. A lot of that, he said, is about finding Gen Z on new platforms, and figuring out ways to make its products accessible to youth audiences. Waldeck joined Lee in 2017. He said his mandate was "to energize the brand." At the time, he said, "we had gotten old and our consumer was getting older." As such, he's spent the last five years trying to give the legacy brand a facelift of sorts. The challenge, he said, has been keeping with Lee's legacy and styles while still reaching new people. To make it even more difficult, the strategy isn't the same around the world. For example, China, which is one of Lee's biggest markets, has a markedly different selling and marketing strategy than the U.S. and Europe. "What underpins [our approach] is a really strategic approach to segmentation," said Waldeck. "And that goes back to our icons, to our archives and how we think about the different products that we bring through."

Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges facing the footwear industry. Shoes can contain up to forty different types of material, and once in the landfill, the rubber foams, plastics, and adhesives are likely to take hundreds of years, if not forever to decompose. Today's guest, Noah Swartz, is a fourth-generation bootmaker and the co-founder of Erem, a company with the goal of making performance footwear that is 100% biocircular. Biocurcular means that their desert boot uses only materials with proven paths back to nature and they provide each Erem product a seamless and responsible next life. Erem was born out of Noah's personal love for the desert, a conviction that outdoor gear can be made to higher environmental standards, and a belief that a company can positively and forever impact people, place, and Planet. Together with his father Jeff, Noah is innovating in product design, materials, and supply chain and reimagining what the life of a product looks like in order for it to leave a smaller footprint on our planet. About Noah Noah Swartz founded Erem because he couldn't find gear built for the desert landscapes that he loves. A fourth-generation bootmaker who believes in business's capacity and responsibility to solve social and environmental challenges, Noah brings to Erem an insistence that it is possible to create products that deliver world-class desert performance and that positively impact the world. Before founding Erem, Noah worked for iconic and disruptive brands including Beyond Meat, Modern Meadow, and Superpedestrian, and as an investment analyst at Gratitude Railroad. Noah grew up in the outdoor industry through The Timberland Company, which was founded, owned, and operated by his family until its sale to the VF Corporation in 2011. Noah completed three semesters at Harvard Business School before pursuing Erem full-time. He has a bachelor's degree in English literature from Columbia University. He and his wife, Raquel, love traveling, particularly to places where they can hike in the desert and go surfing in the same day.
