In November 2025, the third edition of the Junior World gymnastics championships took place in the Philippines. I'm going to be discussing my big takeaways from the men's team event in which the Chinese men came out on top ahead of team Japan, who were very closely followed by the three man US squad. The all around crown was won by the Russian gymnast Arsenii Dukhno who was competing as a neutral athlete. He edged out the Asian Games champion from Japan Nao Ojima with Yang Lanbin the top Chinese athlete finishing in third to complete the men's podium. China took the gold medals on the floor exercise and pommel horse with Yang Lanbin's beautiful routine on the former of the two apparatus and Zheng Ao winning gold the pommel horse. Dante Reive became the Junior world still rings champion and the all around champion Arsenii Dukhno got his individual title on vault performing a near perfect Yuchenko triple twist. Following in footsteps of his senior training partner Angel Bajaras, Colombian superstar Camilo Vera took two gold medals to round out the championships. On the parallel bars he shared the title with Nao Ojima and then on the horizontal bar he performed a routine that would have been competitive just one month earlier at the senior World gymnastics championships. Overall I was extremely impressed with the level of competition at these junior championships and expect many of these athletes to play key roles for their respective nations throughout this olympic cycle and beyond. Beyond the gold-medal winners, standout performances were delivered by Simone Seperanza, Eldrew Yulo, Danila Leykin, Sol Scott, and Nael Sakouhi. And this is my story.
Hong Kong pedal ace Ceci Lee Sze-wing's successful title defense in the women's road cycling individual event during the ongoing 15th National Games has once again turned the spotlight on the city's cycling team, which is known for its stellar show in premier tournaments. Lee's gold is the second for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region so far in this year's games, and she is also the third athlete from the SAR to triumph more than once at the National Games after Asian cycling legend Wong Kam-po and Olympian Sarah Lee Wai-sze. While hard work and discipline form the mainstay of Hong Kong cycling team's medal-winning performances, the application of cutting-edge sports technologies developed through the joint efforts of the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong has been a significant contributor to its success. A central research facility at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which specializes in developing high-tech aerodynamic and acoustic surroundings, boasts a low-noise wind tunnel that can simulate a cycling race environment. This facility, when further empowered by the nation's Tianhe 2 supercomputer in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, can not only improve cyclists' riding postures, but also assist in the development of the most suitable bike design and cycling bodysuit for them. Zhang Xin, director of the university's Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility, highlighted the importance of using a supercomputer to develop sports technologies. As human muscle tissues and physical conditions constantly change, the computation process is complex and requires the use of a supercomputer, he said. Athletes of the Hong Kong cycling team have worn aero-speed suits developed and tested in the wind tunnel to compete at various major sports events, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Host Ricky Sacks and Jason McGovern are joined by South Korean Journalist Sungmo Lee as we reflect on Sonny's legacy at the club. Son arrived at Tottenham Hotspur a decade ago - in August, 2015 - and has since established himself as one of the Club's all-time greats. The South Korea international went on to make 454 appearances in Lilywhite, scoring 173 goals, the fifth-highest tally in our history. Appointed captain in 2023, there have been countless memorable moments for Sonny on the pitch during his decade at the Club. In April, 2019, he etched his name into the history books with the first official goal at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and later that same season was an integral member of the first Spurs side to reach a Champions League final, scoring important goals in the round of 16 and quarter-final. Sonny won the FIFA Puskas Award in 2020 for an extraordinary solo goal against Burnley, which saw him dribble the length of the pitch before finding the net. Both a scorer of great goals and a great goalscorer, he added to his personal accolades in 2021/22, receiving the Premier League Golden Boot for his 23-goal return in the division. During his time at the Club, Sonny also became the highest-scoring Asian player in Premier League history and, in addition to leading South Korea to Asian Games success in 2018, has been named ‘Best Footballer in Asia' a record nine times. Sonny's greatest achievement in our colours came in May, 2025, as he led the Club to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao. By doing so, he wrote his name into Spurs folklore, becoming one of 13 captains in our history to lift a major trophy. Nominate Last Word On Spurs for Best Podcast - Premier League at the

This episode features a discussion with Jacob Schmidt-Madsen about Game Studies and the history of South Asian board games. Jacob is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He earned his PhD in Indology in 2019 from the University of Copenhagen, where he still remains an Affiliated External Researcher. His work focuses on the history, structure, and cultural significance of board games in South Asia, and his dissertation explored the Indian origins of the modern children's game “Snakes and Ladders.” In Berlin, he is continuing this work as part of the research group Astral Sciences in Trans-Regional Asia (ASTRA), headed by Anuj Misra. His project within that group explores the cosmological and astrological dimensions to play and games in South Asia, specifically through the examination and translation of three encyclopedic texts. In the following discussion, we chat about the ideological and cultural significance of games, exploring the importance of play both as a key domain of experience and as an object of academic study. The recent Paris Olympics has just passed and may already be fading into memory. This year Team Taiwan won 2 gold medals and 5 bronze at the Olympics. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/my-conversation-with-mike-chinoy-award-winning-journalist-on-his-new-film-decathalon-ep-290/ Do you know when and who won Taiwan's first Olympic medal? It happened at the 1960 Rome Olympics, which was the first Summer Olympics that was televised in North America. The man who was known as the “Iron Man of Asia,” C.K. Yang won a silver medal in the decathlon. C.K. was of the Amis indigenous tribe from southeastern Taiwan. His Amis name was Maysang Kalimud, but then Japan colonized Taiwan he had a Japanese name when, and then after the Chinese Nationalists the Kuomintang lost the civil war in China to the Chinese Communist and fled to Taiwan, his father gave him a Chinese name, Yang Chuan-kwang. Like many Amis, he used his athletic prowess to gain status and success that might otherwise have eluded him. But not much is known about how heavily he identified as Amis. The gold medal winner at the Rome Olympics was Rafer Johnson, an African American. Rafer and C.K. trained together under the same coach at UCLA and then competed against each other in the decathlon at the Rome Olympics. They were not only rivals but also the best of friends. Their extraordinary and unlikely friendship inspired the making of a documentary film and I sat down recently to speak with Mike Chinoy, the co-creator, co-writer, and co-producer of that film which is called "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story,” Mike Chinoy is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the University of Southern California's US-China Institute and is based in Taipei. Previously, he spent 24 years as a foreign correspondent for CNN, serving as the network's first Beijing bureau chief and as Senior Asia Correspondent. "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story" is currently streaming on the Taiwan Plus Docs YouTube channel. A connection to Taekwondo, allowed Roman Abasy to achieve his dream of representing Afghanistan on the world stage, winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games. But the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021, would take his life in a different direction. His post-athlete work involved dedicating himself to human rights advocacy, founding a charity to help promote access to sports, particularly for young women. That work made him a target of the Taliban - and with the help of the Australian Olympic Committee, he resettled in Australia as a refugee. Three years on, he has returned to helping improve access to sports at the grassroots level for refugees and migrants. He spoke with Biwa Kwan about his journey - and the power of sport to help refugees succeed.
Did you know we once went to the Olympics under the name “Formosa”? At the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Taiwan will once again compete under the ridiculous name of “Chinese Taipei.” It's a silly name that makes little sense... even if you are the PRC. Is there another Taipei that isn't Chinese? And, actually, we train our athletes in Kaohsiung, plus a good number of them are Indigenous people – so literally, they are NOT Chinese. But most here feel participation is more important than names, and many also feel the world sees through these dumb attempts by Beijing to cover up the reality of Taiwan's existence as a country. This week: the story of Taiwan's participation in the Olympics and Asian Games, and the name changes along the way. Good luck to the “Formosan Kaohsiung” team in Paris this year!! Visit formosafiles.com for links, pics and more. Plus: We have a new podcast on books about Taiwan and East Asia: Bookish Asia by Plum Rain Press.

Happy Fall! It's a new season but the same ol' song: Women are still fighting unequal systems within and outside of sports. So on today's episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz first chat about the Afghan women's national volleyball team, who compete in defiance of the country's Taliban rule and are currently speaking out about dismal training conditions at the Asian Games. Then after the break, the gals give flowers to a women's soccer and activist GOAT: the USWNT's Megan Rapinoe, who hung up her international boots over the weekend, leaving both a massive hole in the team and an even bigger off-pitch legacy. And while no one can truly fill her cleats, El and Steph kick around a few thoughts about the future of the USWNT. LFG.
