Episode 2 of our Interview Series! This time we get to chat with the former CEO & Director of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling, Douglas Murray. If you want to have the best technical knowledge of whisky production and spirits production in general, the institute is where you MUST go. I had to sit down and interview them so us folks in the USA could learn all about this UK-based program. Charles and I also have a lot to discuss before we get into the interview though. He just got back from two weeks in Japan and has a lot to share. We also talk about some new bottles in the shop since he's been away and he blind tastes me on something that he got while in Japan. But, is it Japanese Whisky?? This episode was such a blast for me and I feel honored that Douglas took an hour out of his day to chat with me. Not only do we talk about the IBD (Institute of Brewing & Distilling) and all of the courses they offer but we also chat about Talisker, Dalwhinnie, and some of the other Diageo distilleries he's worked at. He was a part of creating the Talisker Storm release and was also one of the folks who realized they needed to put the worm tubs back in at Dalwhinnie when they were renovating and changed to shell & tube! Oh and we take over ten minutes to go over worms versus shell & tube condensers. This is an audio-only podcast but if you could only see the massive smile on my face while we were chatting about worm tubs!! Maybe you can hear my heart racing in the background of the audio. Below are important links for you to check out if you're interested in the IBD. The Institute of Brewing & Distilling Essentials in Brewing & Distilling Foundations in Brewing & Distilling General Certificate in Distillation ** This is the program and exam that I went through If you're up for a trip, also check out their next conference which will have presentations from distillers all over the world and their latest findings: Worldwide Distilled Spirits Conference May 9th - 11th, Edinburgh UK Thank you to Ana, Douglas, and Jerry at the IBD for all of their time and support of me, the podcast, and the shop! 30. Unser Gast: Der Matthies Haus-Whisky. Talisker Storm.
This week Grant and Heavey look into multivitamins...and why they shouldn't be for everyone. Heavey dives into why a daily multivitamin might actually be harmful, the effects of high dose vitamins, and why the vitamins in your energy drink and cheap supplements may not be the answer to resolve deficiencies. After chatting supplements and vitamins, the boys enjoy Talisker Storm Whisky. [1:10] Can energy drinks give you hepatitis? [2:13] 4-5 Energy drinks a day [3:58] Like cocaine [5:24] The whole multivitamin thing [6:21] No benefit whatsoever [9:11] Folate vs folic acid [11:14] Men's vs women's vitamins [12:23] If you're not monitoring blood levels... [14:04] Calcium and atherosclerosis [16:03] Pay increase! [16:44] Give me a call [18:15] Magnesium is tough [18:47] Pump the breaks [19:11] Talisker Storm
Frame 63: Talisker Storm. It's an unheard of 3rd frame recorded in one evening, by a man who is very tired after looking after his child alone for 26 hours and tipsy from 2 drinks (though shared between all his incarnations). It is not amusing or interesting in any way. This one is all about the contest and one of the players doesn't seem to be trying so it isn't even about that. This is why you should never record 3 frames of self-playing snooker in one night. So never do that.
We're back after a winter hiatus, and diving right into the controversy over "no-age-statement" whiskies. Our tasting panel takes on three of these "NAS" single malts, as Pat Goodfellow, Chris Anderson, Brett Gordon, and Brianna Gillespie taste The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve, Talisker Storm, and Laphroaig Select. We'll also honor two whisky clubs as this month's Whisky Clubs of the Month!
Paul returns and we drink The Dalmore 12yr and Talisker Storm.
This month, we're bringing together two brothers who only get to see each other a couple of times a year for a Skype-based blind single malt tasting. David Lavin, Kevin Lavin, and Kevin's girlfriend Stephanie Buchert tasted the Speyburn 10, the Arran 14, and the Talisker Storm.
With 28 malt whisky distilleries and two grain whisky distilleries in Scotland, Diageo almost always has something going on. Dr. Nick Morgan is head of whisky outreach for the world's largest whisky producer, and we sat down in New York City this week with drams of Talisker Storm to discuss the malt's U.S. debut, this year's special releases, and more for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth segment. In the news, plans for another malt distillery in Scotland are getting clearer, Arran releases its Millennium Casks, and WhistlePig unleashes The Boss Hog. We'll also hear WhiskyCast listeners venting their frustrations (and singing their praises) in this week's Your Voice.
