Episode 172 Chapter 31, ARP Analog Synthesizers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. There's outrage over Donald Trump's decision to release convicted Capitol rioters from prison. The new President has signed off a flurry of executive orders following his inauguration, many sparking national and global concern. Trump's issued pardons and commutations to more than a thousand felons involved in the attacks to disrupt the transfer of power on January 6th, 2021. US correspondent Richard Arnold told Ryan Bridge that includes those convicted of assaulting police officers, many of whom are feeling betrayed. He says Trump's taken to calling those tried and convicted of crimes, 'hostages', and has often played a recording of them singing The Stars and Stripes Forever from prison. https://enlighteninglife.com/create-energetic-space/You have heard me use the phrase ‘create energetic space' so many times over the years and I have explained it in various ways that include healing and release work. And that is true but once we get beyond the easy stuff then we move into the harder aspects of healing because like everything else, there is a core to what is making us feel stuck, disempowered, afraid, and confused. As you will learn it is something that eludes us because we are looking in other directions. The key to healing is not more emotional release work, which is often the easy part. There is an energetic component to release work that is the final component, the answer to all of our sadness, and it is the most challenging release work we will ever do.If you have had questions about why, in spite of years of release work, you just can't get clear of everything that holds you back, this article will answer those questions, give you some action items to implement, and perhaps even start an energy inventory of what exactly is in your energetic space right now and what you may want to create space for.To begin, we have to acknowledge that everything is energy and everything has energy. Every thought and belief has its own energy. Try this experiment. Think of something wonderful that happened in your past. I'll start – the time I was in an orchestra and played the piccolo solo in John Phillip Sousa's ‘stars and Stripes Forever' on a barge in the middle of a river. And I played it without making a single error. I had practiced for weeks and it had to be absolutely perfect or someone would notice. It was an honor to play it, an acknowledgement of my talent and skill as a musician, years of practice, and I wanted it to be perfect. And it was. I only played it one time that day but I got it exactly right. How do you feel about what you just remembered? I feel fantastic, I am smiling, and I remember hitting that last note of that solo, so grateful that it was over and that I had played my solo perfectly. It was one of the more thrilling moments of my life.Read the rest of this article on the blog at enlighteninglife.com Created, narrated, and produced by Jennifer Hoffman.Artwork by Jennifer Hoffman.Copyright (C) 2004-2024 by Jennifer Hoffman, all US and international rights reserved.Visit enlighteninglife.com for more information. Please note our policies regarding copyright infringement, content misuse, and theft of intellectual property. A massive second set of classic Grateful Dead for your listening pleasure this week on the Deadpod. We present the second set from September 9, 1972 at the Hollywood Palladium.  There is a whole lot of beautiful music here, starting with a fine China>Rider with a great transition. The 'Friend of the Devil' is nicely done, and its nice to hear the faster original tempo. I also welcome hearing the fine contribution here and thorughout from Keith whose keyboards meld so well. This episode of The American Tapestry Project explores how Americans celebrate freedom through holidays and music. Who was Francis Scott Key and why did he write “The Defence of Fort McHenry” and how did that become “The Star-Spangled Banner”? Which child of immigrants wrote “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “The Washington Post March”? Which other immigrant wrote “God Bless America”? And who was “the Yankee Doodle Dandy” who wrote “It's a Grand Old Flag”? And who was Katharine Lee Bates, the poet Boston.com called “a gay, feminist badass from Massachusetts” who wrote “America the Beautiful”? Like they say on the late night infomercials, ‘all this and more' as we explore American patriotic music and the freedom of which it sings – American freedom holidays on The American Tapestry Project.

Back in the early days of basketball, there was a center jump after every made basket. The problem? This resulted in a terribly slow and boring game. So today, Rick unpacks the story of how that rule was changed and how it led immediately to higher scoring, both in college and in the professionals. This single rule change is what launched the game from its humble origins into a wildly popular attraction. On July 4, Americans will eat 150 million hot dogs, spend $1 billion on beer, and watch 16,000 fireworks displays (and those are just the official ones). But why do we celebrate on July 4, when did it become a national holiday, and did John Adams eat hot dogs? Joining me for the story of the Declaration of Independence, why July 4th might not be the right date to be celebrating, and who the signers actually were, is historian, podcaster, and DC tour guide, Rebecca Fachner. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The musical interlude is “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” written by John Philip Sousa and performed by the United States Navy Band in 1929. The recording is in the public domain and is housed in the Internet Archive. The image is a photograph of “The Declaration of Independence: One of two ‘exact' facsimiles given to James Madison on June 30, 1824, sent by John Quincy Adams as Secretary of State, according to Congressional Resolution. Copperplate engraving printed on vellum, William J. Stone, 1823.” Declaration is in the collection of David M. Rubenstein and is displayed in Chicago, Illinois. Synopsis When the United States entered World War I, American animosity against all things German resulted in a ban on German symphonic music and operas. During the Second World War however, musically-speaking, things were VERY different. With America at war with Germany and Italy, music by Wagner and Verdi, for example, continued to be performed in our concert halls and opera houses. In fact, just as the Nazis tried to appropriate German classical music for their propaganda purposes, the Allies adopted the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth as a Morse Code "V" for Victory motive, and in OUR wartime propaganda, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," accompanied images of Allied bombers racing through the clouds to strike German cities. On May 25, 1944, the combined orchestras of the New York Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony presented a Red Cross Benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, with Arturo Toscanini conducting. The first half of the program was all-Wagner, the second half, all-Verdi. During the intermission, New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia auctioned off maestro Toscanini's baton. As a grand finale, after the German and Italian music, Toscanini closed with a rousing all-American encore—his own arrangement of John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." So, as Walter Cronkite would put it: "That's the way it was, May 25, 1944." Synopsis On today's date in 1897, John Philip Sousa was in Philadelphia and leading his band in the premiere performance of “The Stars and Stripes Forever!” Sousa wrote his most famous march on Christmas Day, 1896, in a New York hotel room—completing the score, he said, in just a couple of hours. The work's title was a tribute to one of Sousa's mentors, another legendary bandmaster named Patrick S. Gilmore, whose favorite toast was, "Here's to the Stars and Stripes forever!” The 1897 premiere of the march went over well, but at first sales didn't surpass the other Sousa marches available at the time. It was the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898, the subsequent national eruption of patriotic fervor, and some cagey showmanship on Sousa's part that catapulted “The Stars and Stripes Forever!” into its unique status. Sousa crafted a touring patriotic pageant involving hundreds of performers, which ended with “The Stars and Stripes Forever!” playing, as soldiers from all three branches of the military marched on-stage with flags unfurled, culminating in the entrance of an attractive local beauty decked out in red, white, and blue. Despite the thousands of times Sousa and his band were required to play “The Stars and Stripes Forever!” they claimed they never tired of it. And in its now 100+ year history, it's become one of the most frequently performed pieces of American music worldwide. Music Played in Today's Program John Philip Sousa (1854 - 1932) — The Stars and Stripes Forever (Royal Artillery Band; Keith Brion, cond.) Naxos 8.559093

What happens to the narrative when an iconic theme like the "Imperial March" becomes diegetic? What does that do to the audience? Samantha Tripp is here to help us explore this fascinating topic today. We discuss Solo, Rebels, the British Empire, the efficacy of propaganda music, and other bits and pieces from minutes 11-15 of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 01:49 - Characteristics of the diegetic Imperial March in Solo ("Empire Recruitment") 18:25 - John Powell's own words about his diegeticization of the Imperial March. 26:30 - Comparing this to Star Wars: Rebels ("Glory of the Empire") 35:35 - Could we reverse-engineer Williams's original "Imperial March" by taking this Edwardian Pax-Britannica-style version and putting it through a filter of chromaticism? 45:01 - Does the propaganda do its job? 50:49 - David Glen Russell possibly wrote the "Glory of the Empire" theme for Rebels. 1:02:40 - SWMM Questionnaire Things Mentioned: Star Wars Rebels Season 1 - "Glory of the Empire" - https://youtu.be/TouCl6yp13A Elgar - Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of Hope and Glory) - https://youtu.be/Vvgl_2JRIUs Walton - Orb and Sceptre Coronation March - https://youtu.be/Qir5ndIlsJ8 Walton: Crown Imperial: A Coronation March - https://youtu.be/fraKCzza0To Resistance Broadcast interview with John Powell: https://youtu.be/Ujm6aLuN7yQ Another example of a patriotic march but for the USA: The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa - "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band - https://youtu.be/a-7XWhyvIpE Themes: 4. Soundtrack: "Spaceport" / "Spaceport (1M6-7)" "Gonna Be a Pilot (1M8)" "Empire Recruitment (1M9)" "Mimban Battle (1M10A-B)" STAR WARS MUSIC MINUTE QUESTIONNAIRE: 1. In exactly 3 words, what does Star Wars sound like? Powerful, evocative, grandiose. 2. What's something related to Star Wars music or sound that you want to learn more about? Musician stories from recording the sequel films, particularly The Rise of Skywalker. What is it like sitting in the orchestra, hearing those themes, and trying to make connections in the film ahead of time? 3. What's a score or soundtrack you're fond of besides anything Star Wars? The Shape of Water (composed by Alexandre Desplat) Bonus Question: What would you encourage listeners to pay extra attention to on their next viewing of Solo: A Star Wars Story? The juxtaposition between the Imperial March in the advertisement versus the battle. Also, the way that John Powell's score creates and plays with tension as Han and Qi'ra are trying to make their way through the barrier, then later on, as Han is hiding. The abstract was co-written by Samantha Tripp and her advisor Frank Lehman. The Suns Never Set on the Galactic Empire: Recursive References and In-Universe Instances of “The Imperial March”  Allowing a non-diegetic theme to slip into the realm of source music is nothing new: ever since Siegfried tooted his own horn(motif), composers of narrative multimedia have found ways for underscore to peek into the diegetic world. But while such moments of diegeticization provide yet another example of the eminently-permeable “fantastical gap,” their ramifications often run deeper than a blurring of narrational levels (Stilwell 2004, Heldt 2013). Because when fictional characters hear their own music, it can provoke a rehearing for the audience. Indeed, the recontextualized “source” of such underscore-as-source-music may turn out to reside as much in nonfictional reality as some fictional diegesis. This presentation explores the implications of rehearing an iconic theme—John Williams' “Imperial March”—through two in-universe instances: David Glen Russell's “Empire Day” from Rebels (2014), and John Powell's “Empire Recruitment” from Solo (2018). These cues both reimagine the minor-mode leitmotif as major-mode musical propaganda. Through close analysis, we demonstrate two contrasting approaches to diegeticization: parodic hyper-chromaticization of the theme's non-functional tonality in Rebels' ceremonial parade; and nostalgic diatonic hyper-correction for Solo's military-recruitment ad. By cannily channeling the nobilmente style of Elgar/Walton, these cues resurface a subtextual “source” of Williams's theme—Edwardian Pax-Britannica style nationalism—and with it the complex relation of imperial-versus-revolutionary politics in Star Wars generally (Buhler 2002, Lerner 2004). We conclude by situating the “Imperial March” at one further level of remove: out of the meticulously controlled diegetic canon of Disney-era Star Wars and into the real world of contemporary protest music.
