Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer incorporated. The #1 TV show in America in the late-70s, Laverne & Shirley, certainly did it their way. The groundbreaking sitcom featured lead characters who were unmarried, hardworking, independent, sex positive ... women! The fact that the series took place in the late-50s was all the more fascinating. But now, 40 years since it last aired, are our fond memories as blurry as a Shotz beer hangover? Are Lenny and Squiggy adorable or annoying? And what's with all the screaming? The Old Roommates get the milk and Pepsi ready for a multi-episode rewatch. www.commsolutionsmn.com- This year, the state of Minnesota is boasting a $7.7 Billion surplus. That's our money... I mean it's really our money, as we've overpaid our taxes, and this is what's left after everything has been paid. Of course that answer is clear, they're going to send it back, right? After all, that's what Governor Ventura did. Not so fast... our government (both Republicans and Democrats) is already discussing how they want to spend this money that they never had the right to collect in the first place. Oh, and everyone has their hands out looking for special treatment. Education MN is asking for payouts from this sum for bonuses. What?!?!?! They didn't want to work for over a year during the pandemic! Cities are already asking for extra Local Government Aid to the tune of a $90 million increase. School districts want their share. Then there is adding to our existing mass transit fleet, Transit-Oriented Development, high density housing, and all the government boondoggles that can't ever seem to grab enough of our tax dollars. Take a journey through time, and the wild mind of Terry Gilliam in Time Bandits! 40 years ago, this film captured imaginations and created a fantasy time travel tale like nothing you've ever seen. Let's search for the most fabulous object in the world as we Enjoy Stuff! Grab the map before the Supreme Being catches up with us! We are off on the original time heist with Kevin, the unsuspecting kid that gets swept up in the excitement of history while trying to talk some sense into God's wayward assistants. This is Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits. News -Boston Dynamics Teaches Spot to Dance like Mick Jagger -Golden Grahams Creamer? Absolutely -Arthur Fonzerelli's Jacket, from Happy Days, is up for Auction -If you haven't checked out the trailer for Lightyear, do it! It's awesome! What we're Enjoying Prithee, have thou heardst of Ian Doesher's book, Get Thee Back to the Future? It's another in the Shakespearian series of pop culture presented in the language of the Bard. Shua has been enjoying the full casted audio presentation of the classic story of Marty, Doc, and the Delorean. Jay's classic earworm has been working overtime as he has been enjoying listening to the iconic Fleetwood Mac album Rumours. It's great music, but it's also amazingly deep. Enjoy Movies In 1981 Terry Gilliam directed his third film. Penned by Monty Python partner Michael Palin, the idea was to present a story told from the point of view of a kid. Literally. A low-angle point of view. But Gilliam believed a child couldn't hold the movie alone, so he cast a troupe of little people to be the greedy bandits. They were certainly no slouches either. David Rappaport (Randall), Malcolm Dixon (Strutter), Mike Edmunds (Og), Jack Purvis (Wally), R2-D2's Kenny Baker (Fidgit), and more! Many were alumni of the Star Wars movies, and all had fun personalities for this crazy ride. Plus, the historical figures were talented actors in their own right. Ian Holme plays Napolean at the end of the French Revolution. Michael Palin and Shelly Duvall play star crossed lovers across time periods. John Cleese plays Robin Hood, the leader of Merry Men you would't expect. And the legendary Sean Connery plays King Agamemnon. In an appropriate bit of casting, the very British Ralph Richardson reveals himself as God. And TRON's nasty villain Sark, played by David Warner, gets to antagonize all of them as the Evil Genius. With a strong cast, you already have a foundation for a great performance, but the story was so original and fun as well. It's really more of an interesting coming-of-age story more than a time travel one. And with a surprisingly dark and mysterious ending, it will keep you thinking too. Don Most sits with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, to finish out the trilogy with a nice discussion about his new album and what it's like touring with his big band around the country. He says that collaborating on a song or album feels similar to collaborating as a director on a film. He also knows that his entire band are a team just like the entire crew on a film set should earn the same respect. Everyone are equals and have the same goal, success and creating the final product, be it a song, television show or movie. Finally, they don't forget to touch on the topic of the all to famous lawsuit and legal battle between CBS and the cast of Happy Days from many years before. As he admits "the cast got screwed, and probably shouldn't have taken the deal", but it's all history now. He gives credit to his wife for keeping him sane as a performer all these years, in an entertainment business that is forever cyclical, filled with hot streaks and cold ones, feast or famine. Don still loves acting, but like all artists, it is always beneficial to find other passions. He has found his with music. Happy Days again.XXPlease Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast. Playing an iconic television character for multiple seasons makes an actor and their alter ego a house hold name and part of mainstream society, usually with a loyal and obsessive cult following. But with such success and fame, comes the curse of an actor often not being able to break from being known only as the character they so brilliantly created for so many years. Don Most, who played Ralph Malph on Happy Days, explains to America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, what actors need to do to reinvent themselves and continue their career long after their character and hit show disappears into the archives of our memories. He tells us that no longer can actors just be one dimensional, they need to continue to perform in live theater, become writers, direct their own films, do voice over work and even have a music career. Don has done it all and continues to prove to himself and Hollywood that he was more than just a one hit wonder. He is a multi-faceted talent that can do it all, and he clues us in on how to make that happen for yourself. How to keep your sanity. To keep the course. Focus on the long term, not the superficial short term setbacks.XXPlease Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast. Don Most – Happy Days, Acting and Crooning - spent his early adult years acting on the set of Happy Days. Happy Days managed to capture more than ratings. It elevated to represent an era for everyone. Further, it made the subject of the 50s and early 60's so popular that other projects rode the Happy Days wave. Even the axiom, "Jumping the Shark" originated from the show. Check out Don in or The success of the show left an imprint on Don and demanded that he continue to evolve. This week Libby Purves is joined by guests including Princess Campbell, Simon Day, Clare Peake and Henry Winkler. Princess Campbell was one of the first black ward sisters working in the NHS; she was one of a pioneering group of African-Caribbean workers who began to challenge barriers of prejudice. Her uniform goes on display at M-Shed, Bristol's new city museum in the old 1950s transit sheds at Prince's Wharf on the historic waterfront. Simon Day is the actor and stand-up comedian, probably best known from 'The Fast Show'. He publishes his memoir, 'Comedy and Error' in which he writes about his life as a celebrity as well as his childhood growing up in SE London, being sent to borstal for petty thieving, and about his addiction to drugs, money and success. 'Comedy and Error' is published by Simon & Schuster. Clare Peake is the daughter of the writer Mervyn Peake, author of the Gormenghast series of novels. Her memoir, 'Under a Canvas Sky', tells of her bohemian childhood and the impact of her father's Parkinson's disease on her life. Radio 4 is broadcasting several programmes about Mervyn Peake and Gormenghast: 'A Hundred Years of Mervyn Peake' and 'The History of Titus Groan' in the classic serial slot. 'Under a Canvas Sky' is published by Constable. Henry Winkler is the American actor, director and children's author, best known for playing 'The Fonz' in television's 'Happy Days'. He is in the UK and will be touring the country visiting schools with 'First News', the national newspaper for children, on the My Way! Tour. He'll be introducing British schoolchildren to his Hank Zipzer stories (published by Walker Books), which focus on a ten year-old boy with dyslexia and are based on his own past experiences.
