Pop open a can of spinach and set sail for the far-off year of 1980, when noted auteur Robert Altman had his crew build an entire functioning town so they could shoot a Popeye movie. This unassuming comic strip adaptation represents the collision of the New Hollywood movement and the old studio system, both in their waning days; neither would survive “Stalag Altman,” as star Robin Williams coined it. Paul and Arlo are delighted by the end result, an improvisational-seeming ensemble picture in the Altman vein that also features cartoon gags, characters bursting into songs penned by Harry Nilsson, and a giant octopus. The boys discuss why the movie is so much better than its reputation suggests, Robin Williams' and Shelly Duvall's underappreciated performances, the surprisingly moving throughline of fatherhood, and so much more. Plus, a whole bunch of trailers for Marvel's Thunderbolts*, the new season of animated sci-fi anthology Love Death + Robots, the animated Predator movie Killer of Killers, and Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme; Paul stuns Arlo by singing the praises of the new Amazing Spider-Man #1; and Arlo is still reading old school Fantastic Four. NEXT: just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, it's another That Was Then, as Paul, Arlo, and Eric Sipple take a bite out of Steven Spielberg's Jaws on the eve of its 50th anniversary. The Bums are back in the rail yard with Season 4, Episode 0112, the upper deck is wrought with some good ol' fashioned bitch-n-moaning about MLB's droopy All Star Game, and uniforms uglier than Fred Sanford's sister-in-law; Paddy takes stock in MLB draft 1st rounders heading to Chicago; shifting to pigskin news, Rocky covers Bears rookie contract Ts&Cs; Brandon Aiyuk wants to take his ball and leave; and review a new Netflix series, “Receiver” featuring 4 of the best ball catchers the NFL has to offer. The lower unit is abuzz with another majestic beer review, showcasing another creation from Hammond's 18th Street Brewing with “Here Comes the Reaper” (ABV 6.2%), a low-sugar IPA that gets your attention fast but drinks and looks light (more cowbell); Rocky's AirConFuckingDitioning trials and tribulations are chronicled; the Bums feature two travelogues — with Fontana, WI (the fake house chapters) and Paddy's adventures in and around the great state of Maine; the Bums bid adieu to six souls — Richard Simmons, Shelly Duvall, Shannon Doherty, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Bob Newhart and Joe Jellybean Bryant; and end with a baby Paddy rant that kinda stinks. Summer is moving too fast, so slow down and get you some Bums.Recorded on July 18th, 2024 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters ‘East Bunker' in Chicago, IL USA.
Original Release Date: Monday 22 July 2024 Description: Dean and Phil have thoughts about the recent assassination attempt on former President Trump and these thoughts bring back memories of John Lennon's murder and of vigilante films of the 1970s, especially Taxi Driver as well as the American classic on which it was based, The Searchers. On this week's show, you will hear all that before your friends in podcasting get down to remembering the great Bob Newhart and the singular Shelly Duvall, as well as Oscar-winning producer Jon Landau in "Celebrity Deaths". The "Live Event of the Week" involves Disneyland on its 69th birthday, the invention of audio-animatronics and how Disney was denied toys as a kid. Two movies have Phil's attention, one of whose story (Widow Clicqout) was written by a future guest of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour and the other (Bodies Bodies Bodies) an A24 satire on both WiFi culture and Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. Watching it was part of Phil's efforts to see everything in which actress Rachel Sennott has appeared. Finally, the Emmy Awards nominations get discussed and Dean's viewing habits get put to the test!

Just like the title of Sabrina Carpenter's new album, we are keeping things “Short 'n' Sweet” this week. Today, we're talking the jaw-dropping attempted assassination of Donald Trump, Katy Perry's sizzling new single "Woman's World" and all the (not so positive) buzz around it, and remembering legends Shelly Duvall, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Richard Simmons, and Shannon Doherty. Plus, we're diving into the juicy drama from the Drama Queens podcast with the One Tree Hill cast. It's a whirlwind of shockers, tunes, tributes, and nostalgic tea you won't want to miss!

Gladiator 2 released its first trailer and although a lot of it has been praised, the biggest criticism is the music choice. The track of Jay Z and Kanye West song did not fit. Will they change it? will it hurt the actual box office for the film? The Acoyle had a bad showing in episode 7. Critics and fans agree. Will it turn around. Shawn Levy will be doing a Star Wars movie and now it looks like he has his screenwriter. The Old Man Season 2 gets a release date, Beverly Hills Cop debuts strong for Netflix and RIP to Shelly Duvall. #starwars #gladiator2 #movies #backlash #music #theacolyte

Tibet's highest religious leader, the Dalai Lama, has just celebrated his 89th birthday. And though he's prophesied that he'll live to 111, questions are being asked about what his succession plan will be. And considering Tibet's struggle of control and independence against China, who replaces him will have large consequences for many people. But given the Buddhist belief that the Dalai Lama will be reincarnated, how will we know where his replacement will be found? Could they be here in Australia? Or is there a chance that the current Dalai Lama could be the last? In this episode, The Briefing's Simon Beaton speaks with Tibetan Buddhism expert John Powers to find out. Plus, how the scene with Keith Carradine singing the Oscar-winning song “I'm Easy” inspired parts of John's own film Shortbus (2006), what he learned from the Sundance labs with Michelle Satter, and why bedwetters are his kind of people.____ Hosted on Acast.
