Plato said that music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. We've all known for a long time that music is not only a joy for the ears but can also make us feel comforted. A song can evoke pleasant memories, yes, but the power of music is amplified if we can play it.      My guest, musician and educator Vinnie Stergin, realized this as soon as he started teaching his students how to play an instrument. His instrument of choice? The ukulele. From this he developed his Mindful Ukulele Method and some of the things he discovered were:·      The surprising magic of the ukulele·      What happens when he combines ukulele playing with mindfulness·      Why music is so transformative·      What happened when he took his ukuleles to prison·      How anyone can learn how to play a ukulele for transformationVinnie's method is a testament to the transformative power of music and mindfulness. If you're curious about how a simple instrument like the ukulele can make a positive difference in your life, listen to this soulful episode of Dream Power Radio.    Vinnie Stergin is a musician, artist & educator. He grew up in the Austrian mountains, where his parents kicked him down a ski slope when he was just 3 years old - that's when he had to learn to stay on track.       He won some prestigious awards, wrote many compositions for the Tokyo Olympia 2020, was signed to indie and major labels, has been supported by corporate world giants such as Red Bull & Polaroid & his work has also been recognized by the Arts Council UK & Help Musicians UK (Do It Differently Award). His recent project ‘12 Photos 12 Tracks' saw him sending a camera around the world, then turning the returning photos into a music album, live show & exhibition. Currently he writes and tours with his band Shiny Brain Crayons.      Vinnie studied music education at the world famous Mozarteum Salzburg, worked for human rights organizations in Amsterdam and Los Angeles before moving to London where he resides now.      Over the past 20 years he taught, coached & inspired hundreds of students from all walks of life to explore their creativity and experience the transformative power of music. He also worked in a prison in SE London teaching music to young offenders.      Through his own mental health journey and discovering mindfulness & meditation he developed a very unique way of teaching which ultimately formed ‘The Mindful Ukulele Method'.  “I've always been very curious about people, nature and life and love to experiment, explore. I'm a constant work in progress, and love that.”     Vinnie's call to action: At his website, you can opt in for a free 4-part mini course of The Mindful Ukulele Method.Website: https://mindfulukulelemethod.comAre you a woman over 50 who has lost her confidence? The show uses a form of storytelling in which Jamie's story is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met) and Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage). A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's  production of  Blood Brothers the Play performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.Blood Brothers play with book, lyrics, and music by Willy Russell. The story is a contemporary nature versus nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins Mickey and Eddie, who were separated at birth, one subsequently being raised in a wealthy family, the other in a poor family. The different environments take the twins to opposite ends of the social spectrum, one becoming a councillor, and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a rift in their friendship and leading to the tragic death of both brothers. Find out as we have a discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's theatre productions.www.Artform.org.uk the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.Artform.org.ukSynopsisIn 19th Century Victorian England, Dr. Frederick Treves wanders through an urban carnival in search of freak shows. He happens on a hideously deformed creature called The Elephant Man, and pays the owner Mr. Bytes to examine it. Treves purpose is to present a paper to the Pathological Society and enhance his medical reputation. The Elephant Man returns from the seminar to Bytes and is beaten severely for wondering off. The man's injuries, as well as an attack from bronchitis, leads Treves to admit him to the hospital. In an attempt to convince the authorities to allow the man to stay, Treves endeavors to communicate with the person. During a meeting, Treves discovers that the man can talk and is educated. The Elephant Man's name is John Merrick and he reveals that he has had this strange disease since he was 14 which benign tumors grow all over his body, face and hands, in which he must sleep sitting up or he will die from suffocation. Merrick is given a room to live in and gradually becomes accepted by most members of the hospital staff. But one hospital night porter sees a money spinner and each evening gathers a drunken crowd of people who will pay any price to see the freak.Treves attempts to introduce Merrick to London society and brings him over to meet with his wife, who hides her shock at Merricks appearance. Soon the local newspapers run articles on Merrick. One is read by actress Mrs. Kendal who visits Merrick, tells him about her life in the theatre and gives him a copy of Shakespeares plays. However the night porter is still in business in displaying Merrick. One evening, Bytes joins the throng and after a particularly humiliating brawl, kidnaps Merrick and takes him to France. Severely neglected and very ill, Merrick is once more put on display as the Elephant Man for the local crowds. Bytes' son tells his father that he can take no more of seeing him humiliate a human being, but Bytes tells his son to mind his own business. That night, Bytes' son, with the help of other carnival freaks, releases Merrick and assists his escape back to England.Reunited with Treves, it appears that Merrick does not have long to live. Merrick visits the theater with Treves and his wife where Mrs. Kendal has her performance dedicated to him. Back at the hospital, Merrick thanks Treves for a splendid evening and afterwards discards all pillows from his bed, determined to lie down like everyone else. Merrick lies down and sleeps one final time before quietly passing away, where his late mother welcomes him to the bright glory of Heave.

Following a stellar Global Mix from Roy Mills, we're happy to present a premiere from his EP on his imprint Local Knowledge. ‘Aquatiqué' is a deep dive into bass heavy territories, as reverberated drums work in tandem with spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm yet powerful club tool. Roy is at the forefront of his imprint Local Knowledge. Born out of events, radio, and workshops in Naarm/Melbourne, Local Knowledge, helmed by Roy Mills, is focused on community and the dance-floor in equal measures. Crafting thematic bodies of work within its releases by combining gorgeous visual, aural, and tangible assets, previous releases have featured the likes of LOIF, Nice Girl, Purelink, and more since the first 10” by Hed Ardennes in 2020. Following a debut on Room II Records, SE London via Naarm/Melbourne artist Roy Mills has appeared on Yushh's Pressure Dome and Elkka's femme culture, with his tracks picking up support from esteemed selectors re:ni, Laksa, Simo Cell, Danielle, and Yak amongst others. Now, readying his second full solo release, Roy turns in a set of genre-spanning, sound design heavy cuts, channelling his thrilling take on dance music into three tracks custom-built for different times in the club. Roy's track ‘Aquatiqué' is a gentle, reverberated drum workout as percussion plays off spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm but no less club relevant closer to the EP. Rapha presents Talking Luft! I'm Talking Luft with the legend from London, Alec Briggs. Alec grew up in SE London and has raced track, cross, MTB, road and made his way to fixed-gear racing in Red Hook Criteriums, or 'Moto GP on bikes' as he was first introduced to it. He's hugely passionate about cycling & getting people involved in the scene. As well as being a super talented rider himself, Alec went on to start his own team, Tekkerz CC, as a place to support young guns coming into the sport. Make sure you head back and listen to last week's episode to hear all about it! I knew he would be a great guy to have on the podcast to not only hear his story but also to Talk some Luft. So this episode we jump into all the usual questions, how does he wear his casquette? Luft or no luft? He shares his favourite ‘training' loop that's a little more exciting than most, his favourite ever bike, we agree to disagree about the AG2R kit & he tells a war story that ends in triumph at a Red Hook Criterium. Plus a whole lot more! This was a lot of fun and I know you'll love hearing more from Alec. Enjoy guys! And stay tuned next week as it's time for some cobbled classics chat with Luke Durbridge. A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's production of  A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (254–184 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from a line often used by vaudeville comedians to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater".Ever wondered what goes into putting on a show? Kwesia is the founder of City Girl in Nature, a movement she created as a way to give back to her community. Having grown up in Deptford in SE London, she experienced many of the challenges that come with living in an area, and with people, who have often been neglected, excluded and marginalized. An opportunity to be part of a British Exploring Society's expedition to the Peruvian Amazon Rain-forest in her words, transformed her life. On her return she started to think about connecting with other people with similar backgrounds and experiences and wanted to explore whether a connection with nature could help them in the same way.  Kwesia's aim is to share her love and passion for the outdoors and she is fuelled by the  belief that everybody should have the chance to be healed, to be nourished and to live life with abundance. In this episode Kwesia shares the inspiration behind City Girl in Nature and the personal benefits connecting with nature has bought her. Hello my wise friends and welcome to Season 3 of The Collective Wisdom Podcast. We're kicking off today with a guest who is just so wise. Alysha Yates is the director of programmes for the charity, You Make It. Alysha's story of losing her mother when she was only 22 really touched my heart. And I make no apology for the fact that when that happens, my eyes just leak she shares so wisely the idea of how you almost, through grief, lose a sense of yourself. Her journey to come back to herself by finding things that really do bring meaning into her life and light her up. She taught me about the concept of the Sankofa bird, which is a mythical bird from West African culture. The bird has a has an egg on its back. And it teaches us to go back to our roots in order to move forward so that we can achieve our full potential and bring our experience and the wisdom we've learned through those experiences with us. I am so grateful to Alysha for the way she opened up so generously, in a very intentional way to help other people who are maybe suffering in the same way at the moment, going through grief, experiencing that same sense of pain and loss. So with that, I'll hand you over to Alysha and her beautiful stories.     You Make It : Charity supporting young women in SE London to find meaningful work. - https://you-make-it.org/   Find your purpose : Jessica Huie - https://www.amazon.com/Purpose-Find-Truth-Embrace-Calling/dp/1788170563   Wisdom: ‘Sankofa: Go back and fetch it. A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's production of OH! What A Lovely War performed at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.Oh! What a Lovely War summarises and comments on the events of World War I using popular songs of the time, many of which were parodies of older popular songs, and using allegorical settings such as Brighton's West Pier to criticise the manner in which the eventual victory was won.The diplomatic maneuvering and events involving those in authority are set in a fantasy location inside the pierhead pavilion, far from the trenches. In the opening scene, various foreign ministers, generals and heads of state walk over a huge map of Europe, reciting actual words spoken by these figures at the time.Songs once sung by men in the trenches helped audiences to think of the war from the point of view of ordinary soldiers rather than officers.Ever wondered what goes into putting on a show? The release of this episode, November the 15th, coincides with European Music Therapy Day. The focus this year is on ‘Hearing Your Voice’. Appropriately, this is the first interview in this series with a music therapy service user.  Dean Beadle has toured the UK for a number of years sharing his experiences of life as an autistic person. He has also spoken in Denmark, Belgium, Guernsey and Ireland as well as undertaking four annual seminar tours of Australia and New Zealand. Through his humorous and insightful speeches Dean outlines his positive outlook on his diagnosis. You can see a clip of Dean in 2011 on YouTube. Dean had music therapy as a child in SE London with music therapist Judith Nockolds, which he talks about in part two of this interview, out next month.  Part one has a focus on perceptions of autism, including Dean’s own feelings about his diagnosis, and some of the challenges he faced as a child coming to terms with various aspects of his identity. He also draws interesting parallels between autism in a social context and other social issues such as gay rights.

Rather a drab contrast with the blood and thunder of the reverse fixture at The Den a few weeks ago, yesterday's 0-0 draw at The Valley was on balance a fair result overall.Neither team showed much quality and although the Lions had the better chances, the Addicks could point to a poor refereeing decision that disallowed a goal from a Jordan Archer error.Terrible refereeing being something fans of both SE London clubs could probably agree on yesterday. This week's edition includes in game comment from Paul Turner (@Paul1568) post game comment from Danny Goodwin of Lions TV (@tv_lions) and finally the latest comment from Micky AMS (@A_M_S_Group) on the continuing #Lewisham4 crisis ...Up the Lions.Nick CBLthemag@hotmail.co.uk0208 144 0232 Hosted on Acast. Mark Broom> https://soundcloud.com/beardman https://soundcloud.com/no-speakers / https://soundcloud.com/elprevost Stay Tuned on Fb > www.facebook.com/8daymtl Follow 8day > @8day-montreal ‘Wise Man' is out on No Speakers 1st (Vinyl) and 15th (Digital) November 2016. El Prevost established No Speakers in SE London, early 2016 and draws from years of experience. Meanwhile, collaborator E-Man got his start exposed to the music on offer from the burgeoning Ritz in downstate NY: everything from soul & jazz to hip-hop before releasing on internationally renowned labels like Chez and Wave music. Together, El Prevost & E-Man make up a creative force rooted in their versatile experience and devotion to quality house & techno. E-Man & El Prevost's original cut ‘Wise Man' pays homage to the house greats, blending classic kick rhythms with flares of unified spoken word. Paired with unique squelching bass patterns and techno- inspired atmospheres, ‘Wise Man' does a convincing job of stirring the soul. Then it's Rob Perry who initiates remix duties with his unique take on E-Man & El Prevost's original. Hypnotic bass & drums underpin stuttering vocals & synths, offering the deep, techno tinted sound Perry has become known for. On the flip, acid and Chicago house legend Mark Broom picks up the pace with his no-nonsense edit. Rippling with energy, the cut offers driving 909 percussion anchored by brooding bass lines. Finally, the up and coming KoreVex provides an artful acidic twist, opting for a tone undeniably darker and full of nuance, yet still imbued with a real sense of soul.

This week Libby Purves is joined by guests including Princess Campbell, Simon Day, Clare Peake and Henry Winkler. Princess Campbell was one of the first black ward sisters working in the NHS; she was one of a pioneering group of African-Caribbean workers who began to challenge barriers of prejudice. Her uniform goes on display at M-Shed, Bristol's new city museum in the old 1950s transit sheds at Prince's Wharf on the historic waterfront. Simon Day is the actor and stand-up comedian, probably best known from 'The Fast Show'. He publishes his memoir, 'Comedy and Error' in which he writes about his life as a celebrity as well as his childhood growing up in SE London, being sent to borstal for petty thieving, and about his addiction to drugs, money and success. 'Comedy and Error' is published by Simon & Schuster. Clare Peake is the daughter of the writer Mervyn Peake, author of the Gormenghast series of novels. Her memoir, 'Under a Canvas Sky', tells of her bohemian childhood and the impact of her father's Parkinson's disease on her life. Radio 4 is broadcasting several programmes about Mervyn Peake and Gormenghast: 'A Hundred Years of Mervyn Peake' and 'The History of Titus Groan' in the classic serial slot. 'Under a Canvas Sky' is published by Constable. Henry Winkler is the American actor, director and children's author, best known for playing 'The Fonz' in television's 'Happy Days'. He is in the UK and will be touring the country visiting schools with 'First News', the national newspaper for children, on the My Way! Tour. He'll be introducing British schoolchildren to his Hank Zipzer stories (published by Walker Books), which focus on a ten year-old boy with dyslexia and are based on his own past experiences.
