Decades before New York City's subway system opened to the public, an eccentric inventor set about building his own underground system – IN SECRET – beneath Broadway. An Inventor's Quest to Build a Pneumatic Subway System in 1870s New York

Alfred Beach built America’s first operational subway in secret beneath 1860s Manhattan, decades before the city’s official electric subway line in 1904. He designed and commissioned a 300-foot-long, eight-foot-diameter tunnel 20 feet underground, built with a tunneling machine he invented for this purpose. The car moved quietly and silently, pushed by a 50-ton, steam-powered fan nicknamed "the Western Tornado," which pushed and pulled the single subway car through its sealed tube. Beach envisioned a clean, quiet pneumatic railway that would shoot passengers up and down Broadway, revolutionizing urban transit. The entire city would enjoy this steampunk system of transportation. He was the right man for the job. As the editor of Scientific American magazine and the head of the nation’s leading patent agency, Beach was intimately connected with many of the nineteenth century’s most important inventors and inventions. When Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, the first person he showed it to was Alfred Beach. But his dream was derailed by powerful political enemies, most notably Boss Tweed and the corrupt machine of Tammany Hall. Dreams of the project died after an economic crash in 1873. Today’s guest is Matthew Algeo, author of New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit. We look at a pivotal moment in the origin story of mass transportation in America, and themes that resonate strongly today: infrastructure gridlock, public-private conflict, and the long-standing resistance to bold transit reform.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When I first moved to New York, I spent my first year living in a railroad apartment above an Ecuadorian fruit shop on Second Avenue. It was a character-building experience. I went weeks without heating or hot water in winter, and my windows had almost no effect whatsoever in keeping out the ceaseless sound of trucks thundering past my bedroom enroute to restock the city. When I arrived they'd just start construction on the Second Ave subway, a few blocks from my home. The project was hitting a few speedbumps. Bedrock turned out to be deeper than anticipated, a worker nearly died after being stuck in waste-deep slop on site, and what was supposed to be a controlled explosion sent rocks flying all over a busy Manhattan intersection. Curiously, the Second Ave subway route was first proposed in the 1920s, which Wikipedia tells was about the same time that planners first mused over the possibility of the Morningside Deviation, a train tunnel in central Auckland. Stage One of the Second Avenue subway was a 3.2km tunnel. The Central Rail Link is 3.5km. Second Ave ended up costing more than $7 Billion. The Central Rail Link blew out however many times but at last check was $5.5 Billion. The weird thing about a big underground tunnel development is that most of us never fully appreciate the scale of the work. It's obvious I suppose, but even if you live and work in the city, while you get used to a few cones and traffic delays up above the ground, you have no real perspective about the extraordinary activities happening somewhere beneath your feet. Auckland Transport has this week released its updated transit map with the CRL stations. Apparently they've done 1600 test runs so far. They've run trains more than 5000km – Kaitaia to Bluff two-and-a-half times. They've been driving trains at 70kmph directly underneath Auckland's CBD and at no point have I felt so much of a rumble or a shudder. I reckon the vast majority of us up top have been absolutely none-the-wiser. The kid in me who briefly considered becoming an engineer (and even volunteered to spend a school holiday touring the Lyttelton Tunnel) can't help but think that's pretty cool. After riding along on a VIP tour yesterday with all the politicians and movers-and-shakers, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown was in vintage form. How was it? He was asked. “It was a ride in a train.” He said. “We don't want excitement.” Well, maybe not. But guilty as charged. Maybe it's the engineering. Maybe it's the people-watching. Maybe it's the broader sense of momentum and life, but whether it's a tube, an underground, or a subway, I love a bit of subterranean mass-transit. You know you're a nerd when you're less excited about the opening of New Zealand's first IKEA than the transport connection you'll take to get there. After years of construction, the Second Ave subway opened two weeks before I moved back home. One of the last things I did on my last few days in New York was ride a loop. Not because I had somewhere to be but because I wanted to see what all that fuss and money and effort had created, out of sight, underneath my feet. I can't wait to do the same thing here. Marc Cox talks with Fox News Radio's Tonya J. Powers about a federal judge's decision to block new Trump-era conditions tied to grants for mass transit and homelessness services. The suit—brought by eight cities and counties—challenged stipulations connected to DEI, deportation cooperation, and abortion information. The conversation then turns to public transit in St. Louis, including low ridership, safety concerns, and comparisons to larger systems in Chicago and New York. Marc also previews Mother's Day, teasing a lighthearted discussion about how moms and dads prefer to spend their special day.

It is a bleak time for mass transit all throughout the U.S. The challenges here in the Portland metro area are many and pronounced.TriMet is providing about 30 million fewer rides each year than it did in 2019 — and the recovery appears to be slowing way down. Rider safety has been a persistent concern since the pandemic. Fare evasion is rampant. Meanwhile, TriMet's subsidy per ride has soared by more than 400% in the last decade. And the regional transit agency is now raising the prospect of staggering service cuts over the next few years. On the latest Beat Check, Oregonian/OregonLive reporters Shane Dixon Kavanaugh and Mike Rogoway examine this perilous moment for public transit in the Portland region. Pennsylvania's state House Republican leader says transit agencies in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh should consider privatizing some functions to avoid service cuts. House minority leader Jesse Topper says Philadelphia's transit system -- the largest in the state -- could run more efficiently by hiring outside drivers. A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Regional Transit dismissed the idea. Pennsylvanians have less than a week to obtain a Real ID by the May 7th deadline. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said PennDOT is ramping up for the last-minute rush. A new greenhouse gas emissions inventory from Philadelphia shows planet-warming emissions, are decreasing... from sources such as cars, trucks, homes, industrial facilities and leaks from gas pipelines. Sophia Schmidt, from our friends at WHYY's Climate Desk, reports. Pennsylvania was set to receive $13 million over three years to purchase fresh produce for communities in need. That funding was blocked by the Trump Administration last month. Isabela Weiss from our friends at WVIA reports, some farmers say the Local Food Purchasing Assistance (LFPA) program was deeply flawed and didn’t meet local needs... while food bank organizers say the funding is essential. The West York police officer killed in a York hospital seige in February... was killed by friendly fire. York County District Attorney Tim Barker says Andrew Duarte was struck by a shotgun blast fired by police that also hit an armed man holding hostages. Attorneys General from Pennsylvania and 39 other states are calling on Congress not to eliminate funding for a vital federal program. The Legal Services Corporation, or LSC, provides representation for eligible veterans and older individuals in rural areas. Harrisburg city officials have issued an emergency declaration for the 6th Street corridor. They're calling 6th Street a public safety hazard... between Maclay and Reily Streets... due to drivers consistently traveling above the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Local musician Darrion Washington stopped by our studio recently to play a couple of his songs and chat. His music takes listeners through a range of emotions, from softer melodies to agonized wails. House and Senate members are back in session this week to continue negotiations on a state budget for the fiscal year that begins July first. As WITF's David Payne reports, one of the issues lawmakers will be discussing is funding for mass transit. The owners of Restorative Roots Recovery want to continue operating recovery houses in northeastern Pennsylvania, but they're concerned about the Trump administration's federal funding cuts. Lydia McFarlane from our friends at WVIA reports from the only licensed male recovery houses in Luzerne County. The Eagles visited the White House Monday to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Speculation about who would and wouldn’t attend the celebration had been going since the date was announced last month. Nick Kariuki with WHYY's Billy Penn was in Washington D.C. for the event. Yesterday, April 30th, was the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. For stories about the war from Central Pennsylvanians who lived through it, see: https://vietnam.witf.org/stories/ Two people were electrocuted in Pennsylvania... one in State College and one in Pittsburgh... amid severe storms that swept across the state Tuesday night. It's been two weeks since a shooting at Florida State University killed two and injured six. We're now learning that one of those injured is Gettysburg native and FSU student Reese Gourley. Her family released a statement through their attorney stating that their daughter suffered a gunshot wound in her back and now faces a long recovery. U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement... Known as ICE... has approved agreements with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and Northwest Regional Police Department. The agreement allow the two local agencies to arrest and detain people on behalf of the federal agency. Controversial Commonwealth University president Bashar Hanna will step down on July 31st to accept a new leadership role in Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. A Mifflin County High School English and Journalism teacher is the 2025 National Teacher of the Year. Ashlie Crosson teaches 10th through 12th graders in A-P English, 10th grade English, and a class called Survival Stories... an elective that approaches global humanitarian crises from a youth perspective.
