“Even though this is a book about snake girls and lizard boys — it's about universal experiences: we can't change what's happening, but you never know when being kind will change somebody else. ,” Jonathan Hill's an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator in Portland, Oregon — and a returning guest - to celebrate the launch of his latest graphic novel: “Lizard Boy 2: The Most Perfect Summer Ever.” While the sci-fi title might have you scratching your head, this YA sequel is actually a beautiful, compelling story of self-acceptance, community, and family — we can't recommend it enough for parents and kids alike, as well as it's prequel “Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy.” Jonathan is HALF Vietnamese American - and while the story is about an immigrant family, community acceptance, and belonging - Jonathan's work, his characters and their journey are important for all of us to be reading at this particular moment in our nation. Jonathan's work has been published by Walker Books, First Second, and Oni Press - and featured at ABC New Voices, YALSA and JLG selections, and won awards like the 2012 Carla Cohen Free Speech Award, the 2021 Believer Book Award for Graphic Literature, and the 2022 Junior Library Guild Selection. Jonathan's also an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Viet Nam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative - having taught at the Pacific Northwest College, the Oregon College of Art and Craft. He graduated as valedictorian from the prestigious Savannah College of Art & Design, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council. Jonathan's an important voice, creating important work for not just our kids, but for all of us to be learning from — so be sure to check out his work. Sophia Thakur is an inspirational young woman, delivering poetry that is beautiful, packs a punch and much-needed today. Her words appeal to our deepest sense of selves, as she explores love, family, identity, politics, friendships and so much more. She gives me the boost I need to allow myself to feel, follow my passions and lean into joy. I'm so glad she's my guest today. Sophia Thakur won her first poetry award at 18, and since then she has performed at Glastonbury, Stylist's Remarkable Women Awards, International conferences, and given multiple TED talks. She is a youth ambassador for the betterment of young Black girls, and has worked with charities including Cancer Research UK, and with brands such as MTV, Samsung and Nike. Sophia also worked with Walker Books in 2017 to create a piece of poetry inspired by The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, called “Poetry for the andem”. Sophia combines words with fashion, sport , music and social responsibility to push the traditional boundaries of poetry. In 2019, she published her first collection of poems, Somebody Give This Heart a Pen, to great critical acclaim, with Angie Thomas saying: “One of the most brilliant and necessary voices. The power of her words will affect generations.” Her second poetry collection Wearing My Mother's Heart was published at the end of 2022 and takes us on an emotionally charged journey through the past lives of women and considers what it means to be a woman in today's society.I loved every second of speaking to Sophia, and hope you do too. “What's one of your earliest memories?” my friend Darrell asks me. At first, it's hard to remember. As I'm thinking back and back… I finally have one. Poetry! My grandmother and I loved to (and still do!) write, recite, and memorize poems. I remember one poem in particular to this day: “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein. Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout would not take the garbage outShe'd scour the pots and scrub the pansCandy the yams and spice the hamsAnd though her daddy would scream and shoutShe simply would not take the garbage outAnd so, it piled up to the ceilingsCoffee grounds, potato peelings… It continues on and I know the whole poem by heart to this day. What's really crazy though? It isn't just the poem I remember – I can still see the accompanying image of a looming, tottering garbage pile threatening to fall over. Even as an adult, that poem and image are etched in my memory. My special guest today, Mike Gordon, has spent a lifetime illustrating books of all kinds. For 36 years, Mike has illustrated over 400 books and brought words to life in the form of images. In this episode, we're taking the story and going beyond the words! We discuss going from blank page to the first drawn line, knowing when you're done drawing a character, the desire (or lack thereof) of recreating past characters, and the love for being an illustrator. What you will learn in this episode: Why quality can sometimes take a back seat to quantity What does NOT need to be in a story Why looking back might actually slow you down Who is Mike? British-born Mike Gordon is a designer, illustrator, and caricaturist who brings original, sophisticated styles and techniques to his work. In 1983, the talented and highly experienced artist started freelance illustrating and has illustrated over 150 books. He draws from his international experience in publishing, public relations, journalism, and advertising to aid his projects and improve his skill set. Mike's work incorporates fiction and non-fiction and has been seen in over 18 countries. He illustrates and designs for major publishers like HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Random Century, Western Publishing, Walker Books, Reed International, Ladybird, Longman, and Wayland. In addition, he's produced hundreds of greeting card designs for Hallmark in the U.S. and Gordon Fraser in the U.K., among other international giants. In his spare time, Mike enters cartoons in worldwide competitions which has added to his global reputation as a top humorous illustrator. Ever since 1993, he's set up operations in California where he's continued his stellar career, even gaining a nomination in the National Cartoonists Society Awards. Marvel and DC are jumping into the multiverse with multiple movies and shows crossing over into parallels worlds with different versions of established characters while they're merging IP from different franchises. It's a win-win business strategy, but multiverses also bring up intriguing story possibilities of how we could've turned out differently if the circumstances of our lives were different, and what it would be like to meet your double. I covered those themes in my episode Doppelgängers 2.0, and I looked into one of the first cinematic multiverses, The Tommy Westphall universe, in my episode Inside the Snow Globe. Both episodes were from 2015, and since a lot of recent listeners probably never heard them, I'm presenting them again as a double feature. This episode is sponsored by Walker Books and BetterHelp. The imagery of Christmas in most Western countries is of pure wholesomeness with Santa Claus or St. Nicholas, presents, candy, lights, etc. But in central Europe, there is another figure in the mix, the horned devilish-looking character called Krampus, who doles out punishment if you're naughty instead of nice. I talk with Jules Linner and Christina Albert about why it was important for them as children to believe in St Nick's dark companion. Krampus event organizer and author Al Ridenour, along with cultural anthropologist Matthäus Rest, explain the history of Krampus, and why he's still an important part of German and Austrian culture today. Here's the link to Al's book “The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas: Roots and Rebirth of the Folkloric Devil,” and Al's podcast Bone and Sickle episode on Krampus. This week I had a chat with the amazing poet, writer and performer Sophia Thakur. We chatted about the art and craft of poetry, Sophia's inspiring story and the black lives matter movement. Sophia Thakur is one of the most recognisable figures in UK performance poetry today. With over 14 000 youtube followers and a rapidly growing Instagram and Social Media presence Sophia has been described as “our generations first poetry influencer”. She combines honest and provocative lyrics, highlighting the tendencies of many hearts with contemporary music, creating something truly moving and unlike anything in the current music or poetry scene. She has collaborated with the likes of MTV, NIKE, TEDx, BET and performed her work at some of the UK's biggest music festivals and venues (Glastonbury, Lovebox, Roundhouse, Tate Britain and many more.) In 2018 she signed a major book deal with Walker Books who have released her first poetry collection SOMEBODY GIVE THIS HEART A PEN in October 2019 across Europe and Australia, and across the United States in January 2020. In this episode, I got to talk with award-winning children's book illustrator Marjorie Crosby-Fairall. She is based out of Australia. Here is more about Marjorie. When I was a little girl I escaped to the library as often as possible where I spent hours devouring picture books and minutely examining their illustrations. I was very young when I decided to become an illustrator like my then-favorite illustrator C.W. Anderson (what little girl doesn’t love horse drawings?). Encouraged by my creative family, I gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Northern Illinois University. Following my move to Australia, I worked in many areas of illustration, including picture book illustrations. I live in Sydney with my husband and son and spend my days happily illustrating books in the company of my dog, Junior. I love to experiment with new techniques for my illustrations, but always seem to return to my beloved and well-used color pencils. Released November 2016, One Christmas Eve (by Corinne Fenton for Black Dog Books an imprint of Walker Books) was the inspiration for the 2016 Meyer Christmas Windows in Melbourne. I was awarded the CBCA Eve Pownall Award for my first picture book, Killer Plants (Penguin). My books appear on the Premier’s Reading Challenge lists and have been shortlisted or won awards, including My Little World (Omnibus), which was shortlisted for the 2012 Wilderness Society Environment Award, and The Croc & the Platypus (Walker Books), which was shortlisted for the 2015 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year. gal-dem is a UK publication that is actively addressing the way people of colour are portrayed in the media. Founded by Liv Little in 2015, gal-dem’s mission statement is clear: To empower and support young women and non-binary people of colour, to disrupt racist stereotypes, and shine a light on stories and experiences that matter. Two women playing a vital role in doing that are gal-dem journalists Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and Leah Cowan. In this episode of History Becomes Her, Cowan and Brinkhurst-Cuff discuss their book "I Will Not be Erased": Our Stories about Growing Up as People of Colour and their personal experiences of erasure. They pay tribute to the women they find most inspiring: American political activist Angela Davis and Myrna Simpson, mother of Joy Gardner who died in a botched deportation in 1993. Ken Clarke MP, jazz saxophonist Soweto Kinch, historian Melanie Lamotte and writer and puzzle-historian Alex Bellos join Libby Purves. Alex Bellos is a writer and broadcaster who writes a maths blog and a puzzle blog for the Guardian newspaper. His book Can You Solve my Problems? reveals the story of the puzzle through 125 of the world's best brainteasers, from ancient China to medieval Europe, Victorian England to modern-day Japan, with stories of espionage, mathematical breakthroughs and puzzling rivalries along the way. He has also written a children's book, Football School, which uses football to explain everything from maths to zoology and English to fashion. Can You Solve my Problems? is published by Guardian Faber. Football School is published by Walker Books. During his 46 years as the MP for Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire, Ken Clarke has been at the very heart of government under three prime ministers. In his memoir, Kind of Blue, he charts his progress from working class scholarship boy to high political office, including four years as Chancellor of the Exchequer. His position on the left of the Conservative party often led Margaret Thatcher to question his true blue credentials, and his passionate commitment to the European project has led many fellow Conservatives to regard him with suspicion - and cost him the leadership on no fewer than three occasions. Kind of Blue - A Political Memoir, is published by Macmillan. Melanie Lamotte is a Junior Research Fellow in history at Newnham College, Cambridge, studying slavery, ethnic prejudice and early modern French colonialism. Born in Paris, she studied at the Sorbonne and at the University of Cambridge. Her fascination with history began ten years ago when she started to investigate her Caribbean origins and reconstructed her family tree, tracing it back three centuries to her slave ancestor, who was taken from the coast of Senegal to work on a sugar cane plantation on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Soweto Kinch is a jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer, rapper and presenter of Radio 3's Jazz Now. He is also a double MOBO-award winner and Mercury Prize nominee. He releases his new album Nonogram, which takes its cue from the language of mathematics and geometry. The album's concept revolves around a nine-sided wheel, or nonagon, with each musical point along the wheel exploring a different number or shape. Nonogram is released on Soweto Kinch Recordings. Producer: Annette Wells.

Lynn Barber first met Sebastian Walker at Oxford. "He was the first person I'd ever met who was gay...quite funny looking with a big adam's apple and bespeckled face...he dressed in a very dandy way." He formed Walker Books in 1978 which, in Lynn's words, "launched a whole new era of children's book publishing." He took every opportunity to reinvent the rules of publishing - he paid the illustrators more money than anyone else, befriending the likes of Maurice Sendak and Helen Oxenbury till they agreed to work for him. He struck a deal to sell books through Sainsbury's supermarkets and justified it in the name of child literacy. Titles like 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and 'Where's Wally? would establish Walker Books as a major player in children's book publishing. Walker would describe the financial side of business as a "bore" preferring to spend his money on lavish parties for his friends. Lynn Barber talks to Matthew Parris about why Sebastian Walker remains such a memorable friend. They're joined by Walker's sister and biographer Mirabel Cecil who says her brother "..had very little sense of his own identity", and that his one true love was really the piano. Producer: Toby Field First broadcast on Radio 4 in 2012.
This week Libby Purves is joined by guests including Princess Campbell, Simon Day, Clare Peake and Henry Winkler. Princess Campbell was one of the first black ward sisters working in the NHS; she was one of a pioneering group of African-Caribbean workers who began to challenge barriers of prejudice. Her uniform goes on display at M-Shed, Bristol's new city museum in the old 1950s transit sheds at Prince's Wharf on the historic waterfront. Simon Day is the actor and stand-up comedian, probably best known from 'The Fast Show'. He publishes his memoir, 'Comedy and Error' in which he writes about his life as a celebrity as well as his childhood growing up in SE London, being sent to borstal for petty thieving, and about his addiction to drugs, money and success. 'Comedy and Error' is published by Simon & Schuster. Clare Peake is the daughter of the writer Mervyn Peake, author of the Gormenghast series of novels. Her memoir, 'Under a Canvas Sky', tells of her bohemian childhood and the impact of her father's Parkinson's disease on her life. Radio 4 is broadcasting several programmes about Mervyn Peake and Gormenghast: 'A Hundred Years of Mervyn Peake' and 'The History of Titus Groan' in the classic serial slot. 'Under a Canvas Sky' is published by Constable. Henry Winkler is the American actor, director and children's author, best known for playing 'The Fonz' in television's 'Happy Days'. He is in the UK and will be touring the country visiting schools with 'First News', the national newspaper for children, on the My Way! Tour. He'll be introducing British schoolchildren to his Hank Zipzer stories (published by Walker Books), which focus on a ten year-old boy with dyslexia and are based on his own past experiences.
I have the habit of reacting audibly when reading good works of non-fiction. Members of my household and strangers on airplanes have been startled by my hmms and huhs of surprise, my ews and ughs of disgust, and my wows of disbelief. I put my whole vocabulary of interjections to use while reading Gavin Mortimer‘s book The Great Swim (Walker Books, 2008). Mortimer, an English writer based in Paris, tells the story of four Americans who attempted in 1926 to become the first woman to swim the English Channel: Gertrude Ederle, Lillian Cannon, Amelia Gade, and Clarabelle Barrett. The woman who succeeded was Ederle, a 19-year-old Olympic swimmer who broke the existing record–set of course by a man–by nearly two hours. But while Ederle bested the rough seas of the Channel, she was unprepared for the media storm that engulfed her afterward. Her story, as told by Mortimer, shows the beginnings of the celebrity-mad culture in which we live today, and the damage that culture can do to people who are, for a brief time, turned into idols. Mortimer’s account of Ederle’s life is poignant, and his narrative of the competition between the four swimmers is brimming with intrigues, scheming newspapermen, and flappers–and even a cameo by General Black Jack Pershing. And the chapters that describe the swimmers’ attempts at the crossing are real page-turners, as the women battled against tides, weather, jellyfish, and big ships. If you’re looking for a book to read while on the beach, this is ideal. My dad, a lifelong swimmer, will be getting a copy for Father’s Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Megan Kerr reads from King of Infinite Space: Donald Coxeter, the Man who Saved Geometry by Siobhan Roberts, published by Walker Books. "While we no more notice geometry and its crucial impact on our lives then we notice the curve of the earth when walking upon it, geometry is everywhere, and its reach is infinite."
