"Die Hard is a Xmas movie? You don't say!" Insert Willy Wonka meme here. Stevie and Emmet missed the boat on their planned 'unexpected Xmas movie run-down', but no matter! They're going to talk about Die Hard anyway. Because, as Stevie says, it's a good film anyway. Also she has thoughts about Batman Returns she wants to share. Emmet also raises examples of Die Hard-likes, such as Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper (which we reviewed here) and the bloody good fun of Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving going on an office-workplace rampage in Mayhem. Also mentioned: 2020 highlights, Heavn by Jamila Woods and in books, Francesca Wade's excellent history Square Haunting: Five Women, Freedom and London Between the Wars Emmet's new comic The Beating of Wings, with Jeferson Sadzinski, Thomas Mauer, Tim Molloy, Laura Renfrew, Aisling King-Macklin and Sarah Winifred Searle is available from Comixology now
On this episode of Comics Deserve Better, Brian and Logan geek out about the darkly comedic, crime comic 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank by Matthew Rosenberg, Tyler Boss, and Thomas Mauer. They break down the cast of annoying, yet endearing middle school-aged characters, their favorite sequences, and the connections that this Black Mask Studios masterpiece has to other works of pop culture. Brian and Logan also discuss the latest indie comics news, including Graham Coxon's comic Superstate from Z2, the announcement of Vault's queer monster love story Hollow Heart and Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's creator-owned series Geiger, and a new ordering format from Scout Comics. They also talk about the upcoming Black Hammer: Visions and their dream creators on the miniseries. Other comics mentioned on the show are We Only Find Them When They're Dead, Getting It Together, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, and 12 Reasons to Die. (Episode art by Tyler Boss)
Writer Jeremy Haun joins me to delve into the comiXology Originals title “40 Seconds,” which he worked on with artist Chris Mitten, colorist Brett Weldele, and letterer and designer Thomas Mauer. Jeremy and I talk about the origin of the story, the process of bringing it to the page, and some cool details that tie into his other works. We also go into the changes that the comics industry has seen and how indie creators now have a better chance of bringning their work to a wider audience.
This week I am joined by Thomas Mauer. Thomas attended Otto-von-Guericke University at Magdeburg, where he earned a double Masters' degree in English and Early Modern History. He also participated in Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst's (DAAD) Amerikanistik exchange program, studying race relations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's history department during the 2001 Academic Year. Thomas also works as a letterer, designer, art director, and editor for a wide variety of comic book publishers, and we discuss the use of the comic medium to tell historically informed stories. Stephen Merchant's comedy biopic of Paige, WWE star and the first of a new generation of wrestlers - is an absolute treat. Heartfelt, touching, and very, very funny. Also Nick Frost and Lena Headey are a revelation as the loving parents of Paige (played to great effect by Florence Pugh. This is a great flick and well worth your time (also it stars The Rock!). Apologies for the late episode folks, but it's been quite busy in the O'Cuana household. For one thing Emmet's got a comic out called Faraway, illustrated by Jeferson Sadzinski and Thomas Mauer - learn more about it here https://www.emmetocuana.com/news/2019/2/23/faraway-is-here-away

We are super-excited to have comic creator Jeremy Haun on the show with us this week. Jeremy (along with Seth Peck, Nick Filardi, and Thomas Mauer) is launching a new book for Image Comics later this month. The Realm #1 hits shelves on September 13, but we get Jeremy to reveal all of the secrets from the first issue.... Well, maybe just some of the secrets..... Truth be told, he didn't tell us a lot about it so we will have to buy this book from him Jeremy will be going on a book tour this month to promote The Realm, including stops at Rose City Comic Con in Portland and Elite Comics in Overland Park. Make plans to get one of the secret cover editions from Jeremy at these shows. Speaking of shows, we are one week away from Rose City Comic Con. You can find the WCPE guys volunteering at the Hero Initiative table (#718). Not only will you find us there, you will also find legendary artist Dave Gibbons signing and sketching at the table all weekend. His list of credits is staggering, with Watchmen, Superman Annual #11, Green Lantern Corps, Martha Washington, Kingsmen and more. He even has a panel on Sunday - hope they find some good panel hosts for him! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Images to go with this episode are at: http://wp.me/p42KN3-DJj Today on the Comics Syllabus podcast, we discuss ‘4 Kids Walk into a Bank‘ by Tyler Boss (art/design), Clare Dezutti (flatting), Thomas Mauer (lettering), Courtney Menard (wallpaper design), and Matthew Rosenberg (writing) from Black Mask Studios, along with ‘Secret Warriors’ by Rosenberg (writer), Javier Garrón (artist), Israel Silva (color artist), VC’s Clayton Cowles (letterer) from Marvel Comics. We talk about team books and the radical difference of a collective narrative. I’m Paul, and I’m inviting you to join us for another episode of The Comics Syllabus, a comics analysis podcast. Our mantra is, we read widely and we dig deep. Each week, I choose one work from a wide breadth of current and classic comics, including superhero fare, comics from independent publishers and small presses, global comics, newspaper strip archives, and various collected editions. We spend time digging deep into the work from various perspectives, sometimes in actual live conversation with others, sometimes with just me on a mic surrounded by a pile of comics studies and academic books. It’s like a comics seminar, where the only prerequisite is that you love comics. This week’s Comics Syllabus podcast digs deep into the two comics written by Matthew Rosenberg, joined by artist Tyler Boss on ‘4 Kids Walk into a Bank’ and by artist Javier Garrón on ‘Secret Warriors.’ I quote at length from Ramzi Fawaz’s The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics (2015, New York University Press) to frame how team comics in the superhero genre present opportunities for different narratives, ones that involve containing multiple perspectives and personalities into one big mix. SPOILER WARNING: In the beginning of the episode, we discuss these two comics in non-spoilery general terms. But after the second break at ( 38:00 ), we start diving into close-readings of the chosen work. So if you don’t want to be spoiled on the events and details of this work, please go and read it first, and come back to finish the episode with us and enjoy it with us. Consider it homework, but more fun. You can find archives for this podcast (previously named “Study Comics with Paul”) here: http://studycomics.club/ Or find the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Soundcloud, or copy this RSS feed to your podcatcher: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:235183739/sounds.rss A rating, review, or star on whatever podcast source would help a lot and would be greatly appreciated!
