It's a brand new Cryptid Creator Corner with guest Jay Faerber. Jay and I sat down to chat a little while ago and I'm excited for folks to finally listen to this episode. Jay wrote one of my favorite comics (illustrated by Scott Godlewski) Copperhead, and I was excited to nerd-out about that. Jay has co-created and written comics like Elsewhere, Noble Causes, Dynamo 5, and Near Death. Plus, Jay has written for some iconic television shows like Ringer, Zoo, and Supergirl. It was great hearing Jay's perspective on collaboration both in comics and in a writers' room. I also loved talking about Jay's other passion: 70s and 80s television! This was such a great conversation.  Check out Jay's website here: http://www.jayfaerber.com. From the publisher Welcome to Copperhead, a grimy mining town on the edge of a backwater planet. Single mom Clara Bronson is the new sheriff, and on her first day she'll have to contend with a resentful deputy, a shady mining tycoon, and a family of alien hillbillies. And did we mention the massacre? NEW PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I'll be uploading a story every Sunday about some of the crazy things I've gotten into over the years. The first one dropped last week about me relocating a drug lord's sharks. Yes, it did happen, and the alligators didn't even get in the way. Want to know more, you know what to do. Our episode sponsors Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? This week, learn about how to break in to both comic writing and TV writing, as host Gray Jones interviews TV & comic writer Jay Faerber. Originally from rural Pennsylvania, Jay Faerber grew up on a steady diet of comic books, detective novels, and cop shows. After writing and drawing his own comics throughout high school, Jay started getting work from Marvel and DC in the late 90s, writing such titles as “Generation X,” “New Warriors,” and “Titans.”  Craving more creative freedom, Jay turned his attention to Image Comics, where he created the superhero soap opera series “Noble Causes,” which ran for over 40 issues. He also co-created numerous other series, including “Dynamo 5,” "Near Death,” “Copperhead,” and “Elsewhere.” In 2010, Jay was accepted into the Warner Bros TV Writers Workshop, and after completing that program, he landed a staff writer job on the CW series, “Ringer,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. After “Ringer” was cancelled, Jay was staffed on another CW series, “Star-Crossed.” He then wrote on all three seasons of the CBS summer series, “Zoo," and was most recently a writer/producer on the last two seasons of the CW series “Supergirl.” In a special section at the beginning of the podcast, Jay answers pressing fan questions related to the last season and series finale of "Supergirl," as well as other viewer-submitted questions. The Starling Tribune Reporters SP and Chris review the 2019 Arrowverse Crossover Crisis On Infinite Earths Part One (technically Supergirl Season 5 Episode 9) with the help of Michelle's notes once again. Michelle was out sick for the week. The reporters discuss the final Arrow included crossover episode part one including why you should enjoy these episodes while you have access to them, that this is simply the MOST AMBITIOUS crossover in the history of television spanning SIX currently airing television shows, why its time to geek out over all the cameos, the reporter's takes on the Earth-16 adventure (more to come in a later episode), the reporter's roses and thorns with this episode of the crossover, why Arrow fans might feel cheated at the big Arrow moment and Marc Guggenheim's reasons for it,if the crossover can be produced like a 5 episode miniseries or a 5 episode premium streaming series, why James Bamford would have been a great addition to the Supergirl episode production staff, and what was that deal between the Monitor and Oliver Queen about anyway?   Episode:            “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part One” [Supergirl: Season 5 Episode 9] Air Date:           Sunday, December 8, 2019   Director:           Jesse Warn https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1168394/?ref_=tt_ov_dr                          13x Supergirl / 6x Arrow / 4x The Flash / 8x Spartacus   Writers: Robert L. On this week's podcast, the Two Guys with PhDs take on a gargantuan task: they review ten different #1 issues from a variety of publishers. First they look at several debuts from Image Comics, including Bryan Hill, Matt Hawkins, and Isaac Goodhart's Postal; Jimmie Robinson's The Empty; Brian Joines, Jay Faerber, and Ilias Kyriazis's Secret Identities; and Ben Acker, Ben Blacker, and J. Bone's Sparks Nevada: Marshall on Mars. After those they discuss three new titles from Dark Horse Comics, such as Richard Corben's Rat God, Rafael Albuquerque and Mike Johnson's Ei8ht, and Dean Motter's Mister X: Razed. And then they wrap up with two #1 issues from BOOM! Studios/Archaia — Swifty Lang and Skuds McKinley's Plunder, and Ed Brisson and Damian Couceiro's Cluster — and finally Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon's D4ve from IDW Publishing. Almost all of these new titles are worth checking out, with enthusiastic recommendations going to Cluster, Secret Identities, and especially the clever and comedic D4ve (perhaps the best of the bunch). And while Derek and Andy W. try to focus on the positive, they aren't overly enamored of Sparks Nevada, a miniseries based off of a Thrilling Adventure Hour performance. In fact, some of the comedy in this first issue seems to rely — and, at times, confusingly so — on sounds, a strategy that doesn't translate as effectively in comics. But outside of this little bump, this episode presents a smooth and enjoyable trip down the road of recent comicsdom. There's a lot to digest in the extra-long podcast, so just sit back, relax, listen up, and let the Two Guys do the driving.

It's that time of the month for the Two Guys with PhDs…that is, it's time for the July Previews catalog! On this episode, Andy and Derek take their monthly gander at some of the great comics being solicited in Previews and due out in the next couple of months. All of the major publishers, and many, many of the smaller ones, are represented here, and the guys comment on how this is a particularly fat month when it comes to new and upcoming comics. They begin the show by looking at some of the titles being offered for this year's Halloween ComicFest, and then they get into the nitty-gritty of the catalog. Some of the titles that they highlight include Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly's The New York Four and Satoshi Kon's Opus (Dark Horse), Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez's The Names #1 and Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's The Wake hardcover (Vertigo/DC Comics), Will Eisner's Spirit, Vol. 2: Artist's Edition and Craig Yoe's The Worst of Eerie Publications (IDW Publishing), Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski's Copperhead #1 and Ryan Browne's God Hates Astronauts #1 (Image Comics), Gary Scott Beatly and Aaron Warner's Number One #1 (Aazurn Publishing), Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Robert Hack's Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics), Hubert and Marie Caillou's Adrian and the Tree of Secrets and Julie Maroh's Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press), George Perez's Sirens #1 (BOOM! Studios), Duane Swierczynsky and Keith Burns's Ex-Con #1 (Dynamite Entertainment), Gilbert Hernandez's Bumperhead (Drawn and Quarterly), Dash Shaw's Doctors and Joe Sacco's Bumf 1: I Buggered the Kaiser (Fantagraphics), Paul Pope and J. T. Petty's Battling Boy: The Rise of Aurora West and Farel Dalrymple's The Wrenchies (First Second), Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving's Annihilator #1 (Legendary Comics), Greg Rucka and Justin Greenwood's Stumptown: The Case of the King of Clubs #1 (Oni Press), and Jorg Tittle and John Aggs's Ricky Rouse Has a Gun (SelfMadeHero). And this is just the tip of the solicitation iceberg. You really do have to listen to the entire episode to get the full scope, and warm fuzzy feelings, of this month's Previews.
