Theatermaker Joe Hendren wants people to know about History Theatre's Raw Stages new works festival, taking place through Sunday in St. Paul. There's a reading of a new work-in-progress each day. These are plays and musicals commissioned by the History Theatre, and this festival is an opportunity for the shows' playwrights and artistic team to see how an audience reacts, and for the audience to ask questions and offer feedback in a Q&A following each performance. Find the line-up here.Hendren is especially interested in seeing “Secret Warriors,” a new play written by Rick Shiomi, a founding member of Theater Mu and co-founder of Full-Circle Theater. The play is about the nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans) who worked with the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II as translators, codebreakers and interrogators. The show highlights a piece of Minnesota history: the Military Intelligence Service Language School at Fort Snelling. That reading is Saturday at 2 p.m.St. Paul artist Stuart Loughridge is looking forward to the opening this Saturday of David Cunningham's exhibit “City Life” at Gallery 360 in Minneapolis.Cunningham's oil paintings focus on urban landscapes and on liminal times of day when the light of dusk or dawn does magical things to a city. Loughridge says Cunningham's paintwork is “exciting and active,” with elements of abstraction, and he appreciates the mysterious narratives of the people who populate his canvasses. Visitors can expect to see familiar Twin Cities sights in a new way. The show runs through Feb. 25. St. Paul playwright Kyle B. Dekker is a big fan of the Minneapolis band Sycamore Gap, who he always enjoys seeing perform at the Renaissance Festival. The group sings old world, revival and original folk music about working people, with sea shanties and some yodeling thrown in for good measure. Dekker loves their harmonies and bass rhythms.  This Saturday, Sycamore Gap will be the closing act in a four-band local concert in South Minneapolis. The event is a fundraiser for the Arbitrarium, an artist coop that is raising money to buy their building and create housing for low-income artists. The show starts at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed on YouTube.

On today's special episode we present Retired Navy SEAL Lieutenant, speaker & best-selling author, Jason Redman's key note speech from our 2023 Street Cop Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. It was our honor to have him speak to over 1700 cops to share his story of heroism, perseverance and resiliency. During his 21-year Navy career, Jason spent 11 years as an enlisted SEAL and 10 years as a SEAL officer leading teams in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today he puts his vast experience and expertise to work as speaker, coach, author and trainer, helping individuals, teams and organizations of all types and sizes to define and implement lasting change, even in the wake or face of failure, crisis and adversity. He's lived through it all at the highest level in his Navy SEAL career: From failures as a young leader that resulted in him almost being kicked out of the SEAL teams, to redemption and leading teams in intense combat operations in Iraq, to being shot eight times, including a round to the face, and nearly dying during an enemy ambush, Jason has lived the OVERCOME Mindset he now teaches others. He has done an incredible job of taking these lessons learned and making them relatable to teams, businesses and organizations around the world. As Jason says, “These are not SEAL lessons, these are human lessons!” Your team will walk away with a new perspective and understanding that there are no bad days, only good days and great days. They will understand how to build elite-performance teams comprising multi-dimensional leaders. Jason teaches individuals, companies and teams how to overcome failure, setbacks and catastrophic crisis through his incredible presentations on life ambushes and his proven “Get off the X” methodology to not only survive the crisis but thrive and launch from it! For in-person, virtual and hybrid events, Jason delivers riveting keynote presentations and is available for half-day and full-day workshops on leadership and implementing long-term change. Jason is the New York Times bestselling author of “The Trident: The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader” and has appeared on multiple national news networks, including Fox News, CBS, CNN, and CBN. He has appeared almost a dozen times on Fox and Friends and the (Mike) Huckabee show. Jason has been featured in multiple documentaries, including History channel's Navy SEALs, America's Secret Warriors, and as an actor he played the lead role in The Perfect Day film and a supporting character on an episode of Hawaii 5-0. With the mention of the word "Incursions" in Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness its timely for us to reach the "Time Runs Out" portion of our Into the Hickmanverse series. This is the lead up to Secret Wars and its basically Hickman destroying the Marvel Universe. All of it. Time Runs Out is actually jarring at first because there is an 8 month story gap. The Avengers have split. The Illuminati is on the run with new members. The Captain Britain Corp has been wiped out. The Cabal is given free rein to destroy other worlds. So much has happened and Hickman takes his time explaining it all. We also get the reveal of who "Rabum Alal" is and it's...Doctor Doom. Hickman does what he always does and calls his shot and takes us back to the beginning. And not just this series but all of his series. At one point the Illuminati takes refuge in the Immortal City that we saw Nathaniel Richards and Howard Stark as members of S.H.I.E.L.D. There's also some connections to Secret Warriors. And you really start to wonder if "All Hope Lies in Doom" from the Fantastic Four series with Val & Franklin from the future was also talking about the work that Doom is doing in this series that leads to him confronting the Beyonders.  And then there are the hints at future Hickman stories. Like when Scott talks about the name of the game being "resurrection". Knowing what we know now about Hickman's time on X-Men and it seems like he called his shot here as well. Every time we read this series we pick up something new. By the end of Time Runs out there's only two universes left: 616 and 1610. And that's where we will pick this all back up with Secret Wars in the next episode.   Like what you hear? Now the fun begins. Secret Warriors gave us a taste of what was in that crazy brain of Hickman. S.H.I.E.L.D. is where we really start to see things form. This is the series that will have readers going back to issue 25 of Secret Warriors to start piecing things together. It's also where the foundations for what Hickman does in his Fantastic Four run gets set.  We not only get the foundation of SHIELD starting way back in ancient Egypt by Imhotep (with a young Apocalypse and Moon Knight) but establishing it as a secret brotherhood whose purpose was/is to stop the premature destruction of mankind. And this highlights what makes Hickman's runs so good. In a way he's a history professor whose main focus is finding the obscure in the Marvel Universe and making it not only relevant, but expanding the universe. Sure, at its core we're getting a fundamental power struggle between Leonardo DaVinci and Sir Isaac Newton about whether man should continue to fight or survival or accept its fate. But outside of that, we're also given a young Howard Stark and Nathaniel Richards as agents of SHIELD. And what happens with both of them is then seen later in how their sons turn out. We see why "our" Reed Richards is so important and different from others. We see why Tony , despite all his flaws, can be one of the most prolific and accomplished (and focused) builders in the universe.  This is the beginning of the theme of fathers and sons and what they owe each other. It's something we're going to continue to see throughout Hickman's runs (especially with Fantastic Four). But we also get the themes of Expansion vs. Contraction, Life vs. Death, Infinite Human Existence vs Inevitability. Issues: S.H.I.E.L.D #1 The Unholy Resurrection of Leonardo da Vinci S.H.I.E.L.D #2 Newton's Theory of Eternal Life S.H.I.E.L.D # 3 The Theory of Eternal Life S.H.I.E.L.D #4 The Madness, the Star Child, and the Celestial Madonna S.H.I.E.L.D #5 The Forgotten Machines of Nikola Tesla S.H.I.E.L.D # 6 The Master's Hand S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #1 Terribilita S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #2 Fire S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 # 3 The Fall S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #4 All Together Now S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #5 Yesterday. So it's time to dive into something really good. We're starting our "Into the Hickmanverse" series where we cover the major Marvel runs of Jonathan Hickman. Now if you've been a long time listener, then you'll know that we've not only talked about the works of Hickman a lot but we've also covered a lot of them already. But you're still not going to want to miss this series. First, while we've covered a lot of these stories already, it's really been all over the place. Some have been Character Corners, some have been premium-only Comic Book Book Clubs and some of the more recent stuff (like the current X-Men run) we've been covering on the Pull-List. But this series is going to be us going (mostly) in chronological order, all in one place. Secondly, we've never done the full Hickman run back-to-back-to-back like we are here. And why does that matter? Well, it lets you see how masterfully Hickman connects all of the dots. It also makes it easier to go back once things start clicking and go "hey, wait a minute...didn't that get mentioned here?" We're going to ease into it though with Secret Warriors. Something that could have just been a throwaway tie-in series to Dark Reign centered on Nick Fury. And then Hickman had to go an introduce DaVinci and the Great Wheel (and explain nothing) leaving you confused as to "what the hell was that?". Don't worry. It's by design and we'll dig more into it in Part 2 with the SHIELD series. But for now, just have fun reading about the spycraft of Nick Fury vs Baron von Strucker, the trashiest white trash name of all time, the God of Fear, Gorgon becoming a problem and so much more.  Part One: Secret Warriors 1-9, Dark Reign: The List - Secret Warriors, 10-16, Siege: Secret Warriors, 17-28. Writer Jon Hickman joins us to discuss his innovative styles of design and narrative. We preview his upcoming Marvel project Secret Warriors, co written by Brian Michael Bendis . Col. Nick Fury and the new super powered recruits he's assembled for the Secret Invasion, will represent a a moodus operandi that has a different purpose than the standard way SHIELD stories were told in the past.Says Hickman,  "(With Fury, your talking about the oldest living clandestant operative in the world. He's not a 'read and react guy'...Secret Warriors is not going to be about a random number of spy incidents, and calamitous adventures... The book is about setting goals and achieving them for a greater purpose . We will be interacting with major (Marvel U) events and be active participants... we just won't be caught 'on camera'." In addition, we discuss his Image books Red Mass For Mars, Trans Human and Pax Romana , plus his Top Cow Pilot season entry, The Core.
