If you'd like to engage with the show, but don't wanna write and feel more comfortable speaking, you can call the Dumbing It Down With Dave Dumbline at 845-330-3410. Leave a message preferably about a minute or so, and try to keep it clean if not, I'll do my best to air on the next relevant show. In this episode amongst many topics, Dave works his way towards getting to the topic of Charlie Kirk and the Deaf. Some of those topics are about the snowstorm that occurred two days before recording this episode and the day before where he had to snow blow himself out of it. He talks about how he is NOT mechanically inclined and he can't rely on a snowblower to work every time over the course of the last 15 to 20 years. He doesn't really do the preventative maintenance he supposed to be doing.Dave also mentions his production company, which is .001 productions which can also be spelled Point001 productions. Dave supports the independent podcasts, way more than he supports anybody in the mainstream media or anything resembling it.He ends up discussing about being the dissenting voice. A dissenting voice on the left, and dissenting voice on the right, he tries not to lean in any particular direction as he is a pragmatic and that's all that really matters. He talks about how he loves engagement, and always asking why. Even when he gets an answer, he still wants to know why. He's very proud of owning his show, and not a slave to sponsors. His opinion is not tainted by money. He mentioned a message he received from a friend from the past named Jason Howard, who is also a stand-up comedian and has worked with Dave in the past. Time eventually ran out on the show, so this is part one. Maybe we'll let this one breathe a bit and then we'll publish part two in the next 3 to 4 days. We could've done a longer show, but I felt like a half hour is really the appropriate amount of Dave. What do you think? Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 8 features QT2 athlete Jason Howard, coached by Bob Richter. Jason's journey in the sport of triathlon began just eighteen months ago. In the spring of 2023, Jason, a long-time runner, was sidelined with a broken foot. Under doctors orders, until his foot fully healed, he could only participate in closed chain exercises. Jason used this set back as an opportunity to try something new and he signed up for his first sprint triathlon. Jason bought a bike and hit the pool, and only a few weeks later, he finished he was a triathlete. Buoyed by this accomplishment, he participated in several triathlons over the next few months, capping off his season with the Oilman middle distance race. The following day, already thinking about his next goal, the Houston Marathon, Jason did a short easy run. Unfortunately, his body was not ready for the effort, and he injured his other foot, this time the peroneal tendon. In the spring of 2024, with bigger goals on his mind, Jason hired Coach Bob Richter. Together, they plotted out a schedule for the season, targeting IRONMAN California has is A race. With much to learn, Jason put his head down and did the work. In October, he was ready to be an IRONMAN. The day started out well, with both the swim and bike playing out better than expected. The first seven miles of the run also went well, and then his foot gave out on him. He could not even walk without intense pain. At that point, Jason was not sure he could continue and considered dropping out of the race. But he willed himself to continue. After several stops and starts, the pain eased up and Jason knew that he could complete the race. This was Jason's GREATEST MOMENT. Crossing the finish line sealed the deal. The history of classical music is littered with the stories of great composers who tragically died young. The composer I've been talking about for the last two episodes, Franz Schubert, died at 31. Mozart died at 36, Mendelssohn at 38, Bizet at 37, Gershwin at 38, Gideon Klein at 25, Purcell at 36. The composer I will tell you about today is part of this sad list. Lili Boulanger, one of the most talented and promising composers of her era, died at the age of just 24, and her entire life since the age of 2 was marked by illness and poor health. In her short life she wrote around 24 works, many of which show extraordinary prowess for such a young composer. Boulanger was the first woman to win the famous Prix de Rome, a French composition prize won by past luminairies such as Berlioz, Gounod, Debussy, Faure, Massenet, and many other greats of French composition. It was also won by Boulanger's father, a story we'll get to as we go through Boulanger's life. Her music was marked by the influences of impressionism, but also by the influence of her perhaps more well known sister, Nadia, who became a legendary composition teacher throughout the 20th century. Today I'll take you through some of the key moments in Boulanger's life, and we'll also take a look at 3 of her pieces: Les Sirenes, Faust Et Helene, the piece that won Boulanger the Prix de Rome, written when she was just 18, and we'll finish with an orchestral piece that might be the most frequent way you might encounter Boulanger's music in the concert hall these days entiled D'un Matin de Printemps. Boulanger, despite her short life, is one of hte most fascinating and underrated musical figures in classical music history, so if you aren't already familiar with her music, I can't wait to introduce you to her this week. Join us! A big thank you to Thomas Goss for his research on Lili Boulanger - his fantastic article on her is available here: https://orchestrationonline.com/lili-boulanger-in-her-own-right/ Performances: Les Sirenes: Chorus: Philharmonia Chor Stuttgart with Helene Schneiderman, mezzo-soprano and Émile Naoumoff, piano Faust Et Helene: Ann Murray (mezzo-soprano), Bonaventura Bottone (tenor), Jason Howard (baritone), BBC Philharmonic, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Conductor D'un Matin de Printemps: BBC Philharmonic, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Conductor

Pickett Brewing Company opened their doors in August 2022 in a quaint neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Co-owners and neighbors Kate Conway and Jason Howard decided amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic to plan a brewery. One thing they knew for certain was that they wanted a neighborhood vibe for their brewery... especially since the brewery is named after the street that Jason lives on.Both Kate and Jason attended UVM's Business of Craft Brewing program prior to planning their brewery. Kate saw the certificate program as a way to expedite her knowledge of the brewing industry... similar to a brewing bootcamp. The knowledge gained by both Kate and Jason was very helpful as they tackled supply chain issues, staffing shortages, delays in construction, and financial planning as they built the pieces of Pickett Brewing Company. Listen as UVM's Gregory Dunkling chats with Kate Conway about the path to opening the brewery and garner her best advice to future brewery owners. I Built This Brewery Podcast, sponsored by the University of Vermont's Business of Craft Beer Program, is a show where brewery owners from across the country share their stories of how and why they started a brewery. We explore their backgrounds before beer, the adventures of opening a brewery, and garner their best piece of advice for future brewery owners.Share in the conversation with UVM's Business of Craft Beer Alumni:FacebookInstagramTwitter

Key Takeaways: No does not mean it cannot be done, it means that it cannot be done in that certain way. There are no secrets from your financial advisor - it all shows up on your balance sheet in the end.In your firm, you do not all need to do every job perfectly. Having specialties (with specific cross training) can give you a more rounded firm that can better serve clients through different aspects of their plan. When you give someone an ownership stake, it is amazing how different they will think. A smile full of sunshine comes to Seattle Opera with the return of Donizetti's endearing comedy. The story of The Elixir of Love concerns the adventures of a bottle of Bordeaux; but the music is as sweet and gentle as the lightest possible tiramisù. Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean introduces The Elixir of Love, with musical examples from Seattle Opera's 1998 archival recording, starring Rafael Rojas and Vinson Cole as Nemorino, Jane Giering-De Haan as Adina, Jason Howard as Belcore, and Julian Patrick as Dr. Dulcamara. John DeMain conducted the chorus and orchestra of Seattle Opera.

I first met this episode's interviewee in the queue for a Latin American treaty underwriter back in 1993 and have been interviewing him as an insurance journalist since 2005. It probably shows in this encounter. Jason Howard, CEO of Beach & Associates is a great person to talk to. He has had a long career as a business leader and more importantly he is a big personality who always says exactly what he thinks, even if this occasionally gets him into hot water. Here of course we talk about covid-19 and how the June renewals are going to be crucial, but we have a long discussion about the crunch in the casualty market, the future for independent distribution in the post MMC-JLT, Aon-Willis environment and the best parts of the future at Lloyd's reform programme. If you want strong, direct views on the state of the market, look no further!

They begin with Lisa Hanawalt's Coyote Doggirl(Drawn and Quarterly). As the guys point out, this is a humor-infused story that engages with the western genre. Both Derek and Sterg mention that while they appreciate Hanawalt's off-beat sense of humor, they haven't been big fans of her past books, in that they weren't so much narrative comics as they were illustrated works of humor. But Coyote Doggirlis more of a "traditional" comic, with sequential panels and a discernible storyline. The premise is more or less simple, but that's part of the charm of this text. And the humor! Next, the Two Guys with PhDs turn to Emi Gennis's Baseline Blvd., released earlier this year from Kilgore Books and Comics. This actually began as a webcomic back in 2015, but it was published in hardcopy as part of Kilgore's Kickstarter campaignfor their 2018 releases. Where many of Gennis's comics have been profiles or biographies, this latest book is more autobiographical in nature. As the guys point out, there is a silent elegance about this work, and Gennis packs a lot of story -- and emotion -- into her brief narrative. The guys then wrap up the episode by looking at Warren Ellis and Jason Howard's Cemetery Beach#1(Image Comics). Sterg observes that this seems to be a typical Ellis narrative -- and "typical" in a good, demonstrative way -- and both of the guys comment on Howard's art. In fact, much of this first issue is carried by the illustrations. In all, it's a successful first issue. This seven-issue sci-fi series has a lot of promise, and both Derek and Sterg look forward to seeing where the creators take their premise.
It's Wednesday, which means it's time for your weekly visit from the doctors! This week on the show the Two Guys with PhDs review two new titles. First, they look at the latest in Titan Books' Simon and Kirby Library series, Simon and Kirby: Horror! This beautiful volume collects all of the Black Magic and The Strange World of Your Dreams (Prize Comics) stories that Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had a hand in, in one form or another, published between 1950 and 1954. Many of these comics have been collected before — for example, DC's brief reissuing of Black Magic between 1973-1975 and Craig Yoe's The Strange World of Your Dreams collection that came out last year — but this is the first time all of the Simon and Kirby contributions have been brought all together and in chronological order. As Andy and Derek point out, there's some wonderful stuff in this collection, macabre stories in the vein of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone and the creepiest of Hitchcock. Next, the Two Guys turn their attention to issue #1 of Trees, written by Warren Ellis with art by Jason Howard. This is an intriguing first issue, one that teases…but in a good way. The guys are particularly pleased with this latest effort from Ellis, in that they've been wanting more original and ambitious (and non-mainstream) stories from him, as demonstrated in Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Planetary, and Desolation Jones. They feel that Trees promises to follow in this tradition.
