A mere 16 years after the Kingpin learns Daredevil's secret identity in Frank Miller's Born Again, that secret becomes front page news in 2002's Out, by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, published by Marvel Comics! Returning to his indie crime-comic roots, Bendis puts attorney Matt Murdock through the wringer in this compelling story grounded in street-level atmosphere by artist Maleev and colorist Matt Hollingsworth.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014), from directors Anthony and Joe Russo and a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and based off Marvel characters created by Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby. The "Winter Soldier" storyline by Steve Epting, Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark is also credited. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans) returns in the thrilling second film of the Captain America trilogy. After Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is assassinated, and he is branded a fugitive and hunted by SHIELD, the story masterfully combines the espionage/thriller genres with the super hero story to tell a compelling story where Cap must confront his past to discover the truth behind a sinister conspiracy to take over the world. The film clocks in at 2 h and 46 m, is rated PG-13 and can be found streaming currently on Max. At long last, we're here! When we began our podcast back in the halcyon days of 2017, we started with a series of episodes counting down the top 25 Marvel comics of all time. Eventually, we finished that list and made plans to do a top 25 DC comics list. In the past couple years, we've teased and tantalized with a few honorable mentions (and dishonorable mentions), but now it is time to begin the countdown proper in earnest! Long have we waited! This is not a dream, not a hoax, not an imaginary story! We are starting our top 25 DC comics countdown! In this episode, we provide a refresher regarding our criteria and thought processes behind our list, and we unveil #25: Gotham Central by Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka, Michael Lark, and their pals! Join us for an invigorating discussion about why Gotham Central is one of our picks for one of the top 25 DC comics of all time! Don't expect the countdown to take over the feed entirely, as we have many other intriguing comics on our upcoming podcast schedule. However, we definitely have a few more countdown episodes scheduled for the rest of the year, so we'll be sprinkling these in with the rest of our usual episodes. If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Feel free to hit us up on our socials, or email us! We have a Linktree here: linktr.ee/betweenthegutters Check our Linktree for a handy Spotify playlist of all of our DC Top 25 episodes (including our honorable and dishonorable mentions)! Is there a Gotham City without Batman? Gotham Central written in collaboration by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker gives us a unique perspective from the detectives of G.C.P.D Major Crimes Unit. This anthology of cohesively written stories establishes the detectives that are hitting the streets, and searching for answers to crimes living in the shadow of Batman. These characters struggle with fighting for legitimacy, while doing their jobs before Batman can swoop in to save the day. The G.C.P.D fights to answer the question how villains' are made as they combat not only villain's from Batman's history, but also work to solve murders, cold cases, find missing persons, and so much more. With the art of Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano and Kano, this team establishes a modern crime noir story based in DC Comics fan favorite city of Gotham that makes it feel gritty, but authentic in order to focus on the story while investing in characters who you will eager to buckle in for the ride ahead. Batman has nothing on the detectives of the G.C.P.D. Not if this incredible collaborative team has anything to say about it.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oscar6884/message

We both loves this story. Check it out!

For decades, Bucky Barnes sat cooling his heels with Ben Parker in the exclusive club of characters Marvel Comics would never bring back from the dead. But all that changed in 2006, as chronicled in Captain America: Winter Soldier—specifically, Captain America issues 1-6. 8-9, and 11-14—by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Michael Lark and others. While chasing down a terrorist plot with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter, Captain America starts having flashbacks to World War II and the heroic death of his teen sidekick, Bucky—who might also be the Soviet assassin known as the Winter Soldier! Can the Star-Spangled Avenger help this ruthless killing machine remember who he is, while also facing off against Crossbones and a Russian mastermind with a Cosmic Cube? And can this popular and influential story arc score an invite to that Party in the U.S.A. known as ... The Comics Canon? In this episode, Michael Lark talks about his journey to learn how to network. He is a fellow introvert and didn’t find networking easy to do at first. However, he points out that everything requires practice and he started putting himself out there and engaging in conversations he might not have otherwise joined. He now has a huge network and get most of his professional photography gigs through word of mouth. He also discusses how to build your personal brand. Michael is currently a full-time operations analyst and IT administrator for a Fire Department. Born and raised in Dallas, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Business and Information Systems and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to his job with the Fire Department, Michael is also a professional sports photographer and owner of Dallas Sports Fanatic, LLC, and Dallas Dance Fanatic. In 2013, Michael began building his personal brand on social media (Twitter/Instagram) as a go-to for news, rumors, insights, and commentary on the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys, as well as other professional sports, teams, and players. MavsFanatic.com brought Michael on as a staff writer and social media coordinator in May 2014, partnering with Ryan Wilson as co-owner of the site. In the summer of 2017, Mavs Fanatic transformed into Dallas Sports Fanatic, a credentialed media organization covering all Dallas-area college and professional sports. That year, Michael also started his own freelance photography company, Michael Lark Photography, specializing in sports and entertainment photography, digital media, and video production. Michael has shot several charity events, conducted hundreds of private photoshoots, having shot several NBA and NFL players, Dallas Mavericks Dancers, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, as well as private portrait shoots, live events, weddings, and many more. As a freelance sports photographer, Michael has covered the 2017 Byron Nelson, 2017 Colonial Invitational, 2018 Cotton Bowl, 2018 MLB All-Star Game, and 2018 NFL Draft. Are you ready for Forever? This week we're discussing the first volume of LAZARUS, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark's ongoing dystopian series. We meet Forever Carlyle, daughter of Family Carlyle, as she dies - and then gets back up, killing a small group of people who were stealing food from Carlyle stores. Forever is a Lazarus, created by her father to serve their family and made to believe she's his daughter in order to tie her to them with bonds of love and loyalty. But the other Carlyles look down on Forever and dismiss her, even as they use her as the greatest weapon in their arsenal against the nearby Morray Family as well as their own people. We explore what it means to be family in a world where all life revolves around the Family you belong to - whether as a blood relative, a serf who serves them, or the waste they despise. What does it mean to be a Lazarus? Is Forever only the sum of her Carlyle parts, or can she embrace the growing empathy within her that no one else around her seems to share? And will there ever be a dystopian caste society that doesn't end up with an incest subplot? We've got the water, let's sit on the side of the road and talk about it while the sun goes down.
In this episode, we take you all the way back to the very first collaboration between Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, and Sean Phillips, the 4-issue miniseries Scene of the Crime. Scene of the Crime was originally published by Vertigo back in 1999, and shows that the team was firing on all cylinders right out of the gate. Recommendations this month are the films Batman (1989) and The Outfit, a 1973 adaptation of the Richard Stark novel.

This week on The Comics Alternative, the Two Guys with PhDs review several #1 issues that have come out in the past couple of weeks. First, they discuss two Vertigo titles, Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's 100 Bullets: Brother Lono, and Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson's Astro City. Andy and Derek spend a bit of time discussing the earlier series that these new comics are based on, but they also point out how both of these #1 issues are good jumping on points and accessible to readers unfamiliar with 100 Bullets and the earlier Astro City works. In addition, they argue that these two titles are just another indication that earlier worries about Vertigo's fate might have been misplaced. Next they move on to Six-Gun Gorilla (Boom! Studios), written by Simon Spurrier with art by Jeff Stokely. The guys note the unique atmosphere of this title, science fiction in what appears to be a late-nineteen-century-like setting, and of course allude to the original pulp story, serialized in the UK magazine Wizard in 1939, that this comic is based on. Next, Andy and Derek look at another kind of science fiction mashup, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark's Lazarus (Image Comics). This new ongoing series has a lot of promise, and the guys point out how the creators do an incredible job of setting up their premise in this first issue. If these are the kind of #1 issues we can expect to see this summer, then hold onto your sunscreen…the fun is just beginning!
