Today I'm joined by returning guest musician turned comics writer Scott Hoffman. Scott has been on twice before promoting his other projects Wag and Nostalgia and he's got a new book hitting shelves with DSTLRY called Warm Fusion, a futuristic sci fi/horror about a bleak New York future and the pitfalls of biotech gone wrong. We talk about the motivations behind this exciting new book, getting ready for a Spring Tour in the UK with his band the Scissor Sisters, and a unique vinyl record collaboration associated with the book with DJ Hi-Tek of Die Antwoord. From the publisher DSTLRY, the next-generation publisher redefining creator-owned comics and collectibles, is thrilled to announce Warm Fusion, a new sci-fi horror mystery series by writer Scott Hoffman (Nostalgia, Wag, member of pop icons Scissor Sisters) and artist Alberto Ponticelli (Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E., Orc Island). The series will debut this December, plunging readers into a nightmarish vision of New York City as biotech corporations unleash atrocities to rival the serial killers stalking the night. Half a century into the future, New York City has been devastated by crime, ongoing storms, residual radiation from a terrorist attack, and genetic mutations spurred by the medical innovations created in response. After a series of murders rip through the city's brothels, an escort named Vin Young, who cosplays as the Brothers Grimm's Snow White—and is one of the generation of deformed victims—pursues the killer, or killers, reluctantly joining forces with Jarrod Hannover, the lone cop assigned to the case. The two eventually arrive at a biotech megacorp developing a cellular metal called Warm Fusion—a pioneering technology meant to replace prosthetics limbs—and soon confront the sociopathic scientist Nicholas Fleischer, his monstrous alter-ego, Mr. Barnaby, and the hideous monster that he's been secretly developing. Warm Fusion combines the visceral body horror of David Cronenberg with the dystopian urban sprawl of Blade Runner, offering a chilling experience for fans of sci-fi benchmarks including Videodrome, The Thing, and RoboCop. “Warm Fusion is a deep dive into the grotesque possibilities of biotechnology and its impact on humanity,” says writer Scott Hoffman. “Alberto Ponticelli's art is transportive, blurring the lines between flesh, machine, and everyone caught in the gutters between. This is an evolution of the body horror classics I watched growing up, and perfect for a time when humanity is obsessed with (and achieving) provocative new levels of post-humanism.” PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod.

Homelessness is a serious and complex problem around the world and at home. It's also a problem that we have some powerful solutions available to us. This week we reflect on the topic with seminary graduate, homelessness advocate, and recently published author Kevin M. Nye. His new book Grace Can Lead Us Home: A Christian Call To End Homelessness is now available to buy and read and the final sentence in it's Amazon description is: "This thorough and intimate book shows us that from the margins, Jesus has something to teach us all about grace--something that could change the landscape of homelessness entirely if we're ready to hear it." We hope this is eye-opening, challenging, and ultimately encouraging as we all seek to think and live more like Christ in how we see and love those around us who are experiencing difficulties! Thou demanded more and ye shall have it! Stuart Moore joins me to continue exploring the world of AHOY Comics. We focus on two titles he is writing: Bronze Age Boogie (art Alberto Ponticelli) and Captain Ginger (art by June Brigman). Stuart explains the challenges of building creative teams and keeping things running smoothly. How did one whimsical illustration of cats by June Brigman ignite a creative spark that lead her joining forces with Stuart to tell the story of Captain Ginger? Stuart is suspicious of nostalgia and explains why Bronze Age Boogie is not just a nostalgic trip. But there are some delightful 1970s references. We discuss a few of them, Chris busts out a few of his old 45s (singles records, that is :) and we share our memories of the 1970s. Next we turn to the Bronze Age of comics. We have a pretty good idea when it ended, but what marked the beginning of the Bronze Age of comics? Stuart and I share our thoughts on the subject. We discuss some comics from the 1970s including one Stuart was particularly fond of Marvel Previews #4. Why was that one so special? We also talk about Stuart's experience of working with one of the best editors ever, Archie Goodwin. In closing I Kick Back With The Creator and ask Stuart his island book, about one comic project that got away and Bronze Age technology he misses most. On today's episode, Greg chats with writer Joshua Dysart for the first time 'in studio'! The last time he was on the show, back in 2017, the conversation focused on his run as ongoing writer for Swamp Thing. But for this deep-dive talk, the topics range from his latest book with TKO Studios (Goodnight, Paradise), his Eisner-nominated work on Vertigo's Unknown Soldier, his relationship with both books' artist Alberto Ponticelli, how much fear and panic is a part of his work process then and now, why new publisher Bad Idea is actually a good idea, traveling the world, and why Jackie Chan is such a comfort in these trying times! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth’s surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. Enjoy your funny books.
This week I am joined by Thomas Mauer. Thomas attended Otto-von-Guericke University at Magdeburg, where he earned a double Masters' degree in English and Early Modern History. He also participated in Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst's (DAAD) Amerikanistik exchange program, studying race relations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's history department during the 2001 Academic Year. In honor of Halloween (again), we discuss horror comics, eating horse meat, other people, and touch on other deliciously terrifying topics. Daniel Morbach, resident graphic novel expert (okay, maybe not resident, since he calls in from Kansas City) and Ky Richmond resident (for real) art critic weigh in on the three titles we have picked. Cast Hosted by Dean Karpowicz, with Daniel Morbach and Ky Richmond. Content Discussed I Am Legend, Steve Niles (adaptation), Elman Brown (Illustrator) Richard Matheson's classic novel of fear and vampirism - the tale of the last human on an Earth overrun by the undead - returns to graphic novel format in a single volume collection of four long out-of-print books. Hungry Ghosts, Anthony Bourdain (author), Joel Rose (author), Alberto Ponticelli (illustrator), Irene Koh (illustrator), Paul Pope Illustrator On a dark, haunted night, a Russian Oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles--where each storyteller tells a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings--and prays to survive the challenge. Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food. Including stellar artists Sebastian Cabrol, Vanesa Del Rey, Francesco Francavilla, Irene Koh, Leo Manco, Alberto Ponticelli, Paul Pope, and Mateus Santolouco as well as amazing color by Jose Villarrubia, a drop-dead cover by Paul Pope. At the Mountains of Madness, I.N.J. Culbard (adapter), H.P. Lovecraft (author) H.P. Lovecraft was one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. I.N.J. Culbard is an award-winning artist widely known for his graphic novel adaptations of the classics. He collaborated on a critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes series with Ian Edginton and worked on The New Deadwardians for Vertigo, Dark Ages for Dark Horse, and Brass Sun for 2000AD. His first original graphic novel, Celeste, was nominated for the British Comic Award.
Episode 50Only the brave will join Frankie, Dennis, and Johnny for a spooky Halloween Special of the podcast! Anthony Bourdain's Hungry Ghosts is the topic of discussion for this episode. This anthology of ghost stories was published in 2018 by Dark Horse Comics. It was written by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose, with art by Alberto Ponticelli, Vanesa Del Rey, Leonardo Manco, Mateus Santolouco, Sebastian Cabrol, Paul Pope, Irene Kohn, and Francesco Francavilla. Hungry Ghosts concerns a mob boss who hires several chefs to prepare a sumptuous meal for a dinner party. Once the dinner party ends, the mob boss dares the chefs to start a game of nerves once played by samurai in feudal Japan. Finally, each round involves a chef telling a horrifying story that was scarier then the one before it.Frankie, Dennis, and Johnny discuss the possibility that Hungry Ghosts is meant for folks working in the food industry or the common reader; the possibility of King Koopa being a Kappa; the logistics of biting the balls off of an entire crew of pirates; the similarities between one story in Hungry Ghosts and a character in Preacher; the reasons you don't want to eat your war horse; why blackmarket cheese may not be the best cheese to serve people; how police determine a demon head from a decapitated head; which semester of medical school medical students learn to do treat ass-demons; and last but not least, the storytelling and art of Hungry Ghosts. Please check out our reading lists for all seasons by clicking here. On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!, we sit down with writer Joshua Dysart to talk about his new book, Goodnight Paradise, from TKO Studios. Goodnight Paradise is a traditional murder-mystery set within the homeless community of southern California. From the book: "When down-and-out Eddie stumbles upon the body of a murdered teenage runaway, he vows to bring her killers to justice. His investigation brings him into the darkest truths of his beachside town, where he finds he may be the only one who cares enough to solve this murder." In our discussion with Joshua, we find out that this story has been years in the making. We get the insights into what brought this all together now. We learn how artist Alberto Ponticelli and colorist Giulia Brusco brought their incredible talents to this project. Now, if you are wanting to check this out, go to the TKO Studios site to pick up this story however you want to read it. You can get it as a trade paperback, as six individual issues, or as a PDF download. You can even read the entire first issue of this series (and all other TKO titles) for FREE! The Two Guys with PhDs are back with another publisher spotlight, and this time the focus is on AfterShock Comics. This is a new publisher that began soliciting their titles back in the fall and then releasing their initial series in December 2015. With editorial oversight by two veterans of the mainstream, Mike Marts and Joe Pruett, AfterShock has been bringing in some major-league talent to write and illustrate their comics, which is something that Andy and Derek noted when they first caught wind of the up-and-coming publisher. They begin their spotlight by speculating on the possible direction and business plan of AfterShock, observing that some of the company executives have a lot of Hollywood and TV/film experience, and that the kind of titles they're releasing (and the creators on them) are reminiscent of what readers have historically found at Vertigo and Image. Then they jump into the titles themselves, beginning with the first three issues of Super Zero, written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti and with art by Rafael De Latorre. The guys enjoy this series, a charming and realistic (at least for now) twist on the superhero genre, although they're hoping that the storyline will soon depart its premise. After that, they look at the first four issues of Paul Jenkins and Andy Clarke's Replica. This is a futuristic and humorous sci-fi procedural taking place at a nexus of alien cultures. The guys note that after a slow start with the first issue, the series successfully settles into its groove. Yet after finding a lot of critical common ground with the first two series, Andy's and Derek's opinions diverge dramatically on several of the remaining AfterShock titles. This is most apparent with InSext, a Victorian, entomologically tinged (and erotic) thriller written by Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Ariela Kristantina. While Andy finds this one of the most compelling of AfterShock's initial lineup, Derek feels that there are too many holes in the premise -- moth-eaten, if you will -- and that the first four issues lack narrative cohesion. They also disagree on Garth Ennis and Simon Coleby's Dreaming Eagles as well as Brian Azzarello and Juan Doe's American Monster. Derek believes these are two strong stories, although Andy feels they are just more of the same, nothing new, from Ennis and Azzarello. They do agree, however, on the promise found in the first couple of issues of Strayer, from the creative team Justin Jordan and Juan Gedeon. Finally, the guys wrap up with a discussion on AfterShock's newest title, Second Sight, written by David Hine and with art from Alberto Ponticelli. This is one of Derek's favorites from AfterShock, so far, although Andy is less enthusiastic and is waiting to be impressed. Before signing off of this publisher spotlight, the guys also anticipate the publisher's next wave of new series -- including Rough Riders (by Adam Glass and Patrick Ollie), Jackpot! (Ray Fawkes and Marco Failla), and Black-Eyed Kids (Joe Pruett and Szymon Kudranski) -- and mention some of the other creators slotted for future AfterShock releases, including Mark Waid, Cullen Bunn, John Layman, Tim Seeley, and Frank Barbiere. In sum, the guys see AfterShock Comics as a new publisher worth watching.
