 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank: A Masterclass in StorytellingFour days before Pitchers and Catchers reported for the greatest Cubs season of my lifetime (or really anybody's) I saw this headline at The Nerdist: 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank is Wes Anderson Meets Reservoir DogsAnd that's all it took, I was hooked. I knew I NEEDED to read this book, and the first issue couldn't come soon enough. The story was good enough to keep me hooked through a release schedule that involved 3-6 months between issues. And when Tyler asked me to do this podcast, planning our first episode for the week that Matthew Rosenberg & Tyler Boss were to release their reunion What's the Furthest Place From Here? It immediately popped into my head as the first book that I wanted to take a deep dive on for our show. Then as I re-read it I realized that it was not just the story but the ways in which that story was told that made this book not just good, but truly among the greats. One allegedly kills his girlfriend. Another poses in front of her dead dads open coffin who's a veteran. Comic books are deeply ingrained in Matthew Rosenberg’s life. From reading comics as a kid growing up in New York, Rosenberg went into the music industry. During that time he wrote his first comic with RZA and Ghostface Killah. He went on to write his creator owned Black Mask Studios title ‘We Can Never Go Home’. From there he created Black Mask Studios titles like ’12 Reasons To Die’ and ‘4 Kids Walk Into A Bank’. Rosenberg has written Rocket Raccoon, Kingpin, Punisher and a number of other books for Marvel. He also spearheaded the return of Uncanny X-Men in 2018. Currently, Rosenberg is behind Marvel’s Annihilation Scourge event. Each week, I choose one work from a wide breadth of current and classic comics, including superhero fare, comics from independent publishers and small presses, global comics, newspaper strip archives, and various collected editions. We spend time digging deep into the work from various perspectives, sometimes in actual live conversation with others, sometimes with just me on a mic surrounded by a pile of comics studies and academic books. It’s like a comics seminar, where the only prerequisite is that you love comics. This week’s Comics Syllabus podcast digs deep into the two comics written by Matthew Rosenberg, joined by artist Tyler Boss on ‘4 Kids Walk into a Bank’ and by artist Javier Garrón on ‘Secret Warriors.’ I quote at length from Ramzi Fawaz’s The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics (2015, New York University Press) to frame how team comics in the superhero genre present opportunities for different narratives, ones that involve containing multiple perspectives and personalities into one big mix. When toddlers are learning to walk, many spend some time walking up on their tip toes, which is known as toe walking. Some toddlers are unable to walk with their whole foot, and this is something that should be checked out by a health professional. Toe walking can be classified into four groups. Some neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy cause the calf muscle to be tighter or change the way it works. Derek is back at his local shop, Collected Comics and Games in Plano, TX, for the March on-location episode of podcast. (Unfortunately that was no February episode at Collected due to unforeseen circumstances.) While there, he talks with several shop employees and customers about a variety of comics-related matters. Folks spend a lot of time discussing some of the titles they've been reading lately. Matt Kuzio, who usually participates in these shows, was unable to be there this month, but he shared in absentia some of the comics he's been enjoying, including Emma Ríos and Kwei Lim's Mirror (Image Comics), Kate Leth and Brittney Williams'a Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! (Marvel Comics), Chris Lewis and Tony Gregori's Karma Police (Comics Experience), and Sarah Andersen's Adulthood Is a Myth: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection (Andrews McMeel Publishing). Sabrina, the shop manager, talks up some of the preview copies she's been receiving, such as the first issues of Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber's The Fix (Image Comics), Christopher Sebela and Robert Wilson IV, Heartthrob (Oni Press), and Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss's 4 Kids Walk into a Bank (Black Mask Comics). Chris, a regular customer of Collected, discusses his enthusiasm for Angela Queen of Hel (Marvel). And shop employee, Stephanie, mentions Marguerite Bennett and Ariela Kristantina's Insext, although Derek references his less-than-enthusiastic discussion of the title in the recent publisher spotlight on AfterShock Comics. There's also quite a bit of talk over recent comics in TV and film -- such as the new Lucifer series and the second season of Daredevil -- and, on a very special note, everyone there sings the praises of Andy Hirsh, a local artist (and friend of the show) who is also a Collected customer. His series, The Baker Street Peculiars (written by Roger Langridge and published by BOOM! Studios) just began this month, and his new book, Varmints, is due for release this fall from First Second. Needless to say, there's plenty to discuss, and the guys cover a lot of ground this month!
