Baxie talks with the legendary Brian James. Brian talks about co-founding The Damned—the first British punk band to release a single with "New Rose" (October of 1976). The Damned were also the British Punk band to release an album with "Damned Damned Damned "(February of 1977). They were also the first British Punk band to tour the United States (April of 1977). Brian talks about forming the band and why he left. He also talks about playing with Iggy Pop and about his years with the late Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys) in forming the Lords of the New Church, and the band he formed with Wayne Kramer of the MC5, Stewart Copeland from The Police, Duff McKagan from Guns & Roses, and Clem Burke from Blondie called the Racketeers! Send us a textThis episode spends time with Nick Lowe, a British performer, who started out with pub rock band, Brinsley Schwarz, and Dave Edmunds' Rockpile. Lowe's solo career has produced a huge bunch of great songs – many of which you've heard, even if you've not heard of him - which have been hits for him AND covered by some amazing people! A suggestion from listener Nick from Victoria, this episode was the most fun we've had for some time! Rock News features some standards – Oasis touring (yeah, right!), a new single and album from The Cure, Ozzy Osbourne inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and The Eagles playing a 10-week residency in Las Vegas. Yep, more of the same! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before you Die” is Doggystyle (1993) by Snoop Doggy Dogg. We decide “Who cares?”. Instead, we talk about Snoop Dogg's presence in TV and movies since the 90's, including the 2024 Olympics! In this episode we continue our trio of episodes on Punk by examining some crucial mid-70s proto-Punk antecedents. Via the lean funkiness of Dr Feelgood Jeremy and Tim explore the interesting British formation of pub rock, with its R'n'B roots and distinct danceability. This leads to a discussion on the slipperiness of Rock'n'Roll as a term and its tensions with ‘rock' proper. We also hear an early influence on Post-Punk and meet the influential Stiff Records at its foundation. In the second half of the show we make a second encounter on the show with the Ramones, and ask: what were they really up to? Authenticity, performance, historiography and hagiography all come under the microscope as we lead to the first definitively British Punk record: New Rose by The Damned.Join us next time for Blondie and the Sex Pistols.Produced and edited by Matt Huxley.
Interview by Kris PetersWhile many bands proclaim to be the real deal when it comes to punk rock, very few can say so definitively. Punk rock is/has and never will be a style of music that caters to the masses or measures itself on facts and figures. It is more music for the outcasts and disenfranchised who have little in common except for a united love of a brand of music that knows no boundaries. But mention The Damned to anyone with even a sniff of knowledge about punk, and you will invariably be met with the same respect and admiration for a band who truly started it all. They were officially the first ever punk band to release a single when they put out New Rose five weeks before the Sex Pistols released Anarchy In The U.K which led to them being the first British punk band to tour the United States. While undergoing several line-up changes in their 35-plus years as a band, there is one that stands out to many as The Damned's classic collection of musicians. Vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible, drummer Rat Scabies and bass player Paul Gray are the quartet widely regarded as the best unit, releasing the albums Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries while the group was together and now, for the first time since 1989, those four will share the stage together when The Damned hit Australia for the final time later this month.HEAVY managed to secure some rare time with Captain Sensible to run through the tour and career of The Damned, with him starting by revealing how he got his stage name."I acquired that name because I was a rabid drunk, actually," he offered, "and not at all sensible. So I got the name thrust upon me and have not been able to shake it off since. I'm getting old these days, so the drinking's taken a back seat, but I've still got the stupid name (laughs). The good news is over 40 years I've learned to play the guitar and the band is sounding quite good at the moment. If you like what The Damned do, we're doing a fair representation of those records that we made back in the 70s and 80s.""It's a great name, The Damned," he continued. "I think the Sex Pistols originally wanted it, but we got it first."We ask if it was hard getting the gang back together so to speak for this tour."No, coz Rat and Paul have been working together on a project with some Americans and me and Dave have been doing The Damned all this time," he replied. "There was a bit of bad blood, that was the only thing that could have got in the way, really. I mean, it was so long ago, I can't remember what we used to argue about (laughs). But it was all sorts of shenanigans, including fisticuffs, attacking each other with empty whisky bottles and stuff like that. As you do in punk rock bands, but we buried the hatchet, and we're getting on okay now. It's interesting to see what they've been doing all these years."In the full interview, Captain Sensible talks more about the tour and what to expect, why he thinks this line-up can be considered as classic, what he expects from his crowds live, demanding the Hard-Ons support the tour, his memories of recording them, the early days of The Damned and the musical climate that gave birth to them, beating the Sex Pistols to releasing the first ever punk single, Sid Vicious wanting to join The Damned as vocalist, the relationship between punk bands in the early days, how competitive the scene was, the age-old belief that punk is all about the attitude rather than the music, how punk music has changed over the years, The Damned's contribution to punk, his top three commandments of punk and more.
The Damned were formed in London in 1976. Several of its founding members had previously played together in another early Punk group, Masters of the Backside. Masters was managed by the Pistol's famed manager Malcolm Mclaren, and included future Damned members Dave Vanian (born David Lett), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns) and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar), as well as future Pretenders lead Chrissie Hynde. Brian James was the drummer in a band called London SS, which is largely remembered for housing, not only James, but also future Clash member, Mick Jones and future Generation X member, Tony James. "Neat Neat Neat", "New Rose", "Smash It Up"... we could go on and on naming hits of The Damned and why they are so damn important for punk history - pun intended! We talked to founder Captain Sensible about their upcoming record "Darkadelic", the never ending discussion about who was the first british punk band and the sad fact, that he's only able to drink three pints during a show instead of 30. ;-) Enjoy a new episode of WHOLE LOTTA TALK
According to Flower Power Daily red roses are getting some competition. Toffee Roses are VERY HOT right now and florists everywhere are clamoring to get their hands on them. In the past year rose farms have quadrupled their ‘toffee rose' production and there's even a toffee rose black market since only a handful of farms have the exclusive rights to this new rose color tone. Even the toffee colored rose names like Frappachino, Caramel, and Golden Mustard are protected by a licensing rights. Jill Brooke, Founder and editorial director of Flower Power Daily says, “We have anointed the toffee rose to symbolize “open-minded, open-hearted and blended.” This rose does speak to 2023 and is a fitting addition to our changing social landscape, which embraces all the colors of love.” FPD reports that according to the Pew Research Center, 17% of all marriages in 2022 were of mixed races and ethnicities. The toffee/taupe roses are a perfect choice to represent that cultural shift. It's no longer just white roses at the wedding or for the wedding bouquet. Jill says the unsung heroes of the flower industry are all the breeders and scientists who work diligently to develop new rose colors every year in the hope that something new catches on. To their delight, toffee roses caught on big time. FPD wrote that Joey Azout, president of Alexandra Farms, which produces David Austin roses among other brands, says “sales of sand, toffee, and nude color roses now make up 30% of the color assortment.” And FPD shared that in anticipation of the growing popularity of this color wave, Rosaprima Roses also introduced RP Moab last year. The company said it planted 20,000 plants and now will increase that production to 150,000 because of demand. Ryan Black, of Miami-based Jet Fresh Flowers, told FPD, a “black market” for the flowers is emerging since only a handful of farms have the exclusive rights to this color tone and are trying to grow them illegally without breeder permission. Black, who is the fourth generation of his family in the flower business, says the company's Ecuador farm grows varieties including Symbol and Quicksand which are selling as briskly as real estate in Florida. Jill says in the U.S. California is the major rose growing epicenter but in South America, Columbia and Ecuador are really big flower generating locations. Theres some really good news in all this toffee rose hoopla for small business. Local Florists who have been finding it harder and harder to compete with the supermarkets selling flowers, are the only ones who can get and sell these rare toffee roses. Interesting fact about Supermarkets said Jill. They've recognized that people buy more in their stores when they see flowers because seeing flowers makes them feel happier. When people feel good they spend more. Supermarkets who can sell flowers cheaper than local florists because they buy in bulk, have set up their flower stations at the front of their stores so people see them when they first walk in. In addition to talking toffee, Jill and took a few minutes on Valentines Day to review the meanings of the different colors of roses. Red = passion White = purity and innocence Pink = elegance and charm appreciative love Yellow = friendship and courage Peach = enthusiasm mischief and fun Jill who is passionate about all things floral said, “Flowers convey a dictionary of feelings without saying a word”. How true. Listen in as Jill Brooke and I discuss all the toffee rose hoopla in this podcast of our live girlfriends in business conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show
Interview with KB Boyce Singer-Song writer Bassist, Drummer, and activist Queer Rebel Productions: our mission is to showcase queer and trans artists of color, connect generations, and honor our histories with art for the future. www.queerrebels.org Music https://thehomobiles.com https://www.leftfordeadrecords.com/nasty-facts Nasty Facts Nastyfacts were fronted by bassist/lead singer/songwriter Cherl Boyze, an 18 year oldQueer POC with the rest of the band being in their mid-teens or younger in 1981 when their three-song, 7-inch debut, Drive My Car, was released on the independent Jimboco label. The record was a word-of-mouth hit and sold strongly in the U.S. despite group members being too young to tour. John Peel played it repeatedly on his legendary indie- centric BBC show and helped get it released in the UK. Over 40 years after their release these songs still capture the imaginations of music lovers the world over, showing up on OG punk compilations like Killed By Death while rabid collectors pay $300 for original copies, and counterfeiters regularly sell out bootleg pressings. The reason for the EP's continued appeal is nicely captured in Steve Gardner's (editor of Noise For Heroes / Another Tuneless Racket fanzines) description of the music contained here in this re-release's liner notes: “The drums were crazed and hammering, as wild and primal in their own way as Rat Scabies on “New Rose”. The bass motored up and down, laying out a great melody but reinforcing the rhythm as well. The guitar was power-chording nirvana, and when the lead break came it was perfect. The vocals weren't the hyper-aggro thing that was the stock-in-trade most of the furious punks of the day; the lead was handled deftly by Cherl Boyze, who, I wrote in NFH #9, was ‘black, female, and at 18 the oldest member of the band”. She didn't snarl, but she didn't croon, either, and when her male bandmates added backing vocals the result was pop/punk magic. And finally, the production had all kinds of wild bad driving sound effects that just elevated everything.'” Nastyfacts were part of a Brooklyn teen-punk scene that included the Speedies and The Stimulators. Their core line-up consisted of Cherl Boyze on bass and lead vocals, guitarists Brad Craig and Jeff ;Range Tischler with Genji Searizak & Siraisi on drum; these last three also sang back-up. They began playing music together while attending St. Ann's School in Brooklyn and after a year of playing covers locally began building a following in Manhattan playing amateur nights at CBGBs and then regular slots at Max's Kansas City and other venues that'd host all-ages shows. They soon accumulated a full album's worth of solid original material, but unfortunately only made studio recordings of the three amazing songs that make up Drive My Car.
Dans les années 1980, New Rose, petit disquaire du Quartier Latin à Paris, était devenu grand. Il fut la plaque tournante des punks en goguette, QG des désaxés, et label de disques à nul autre pareil. Les Cramps, Johnny Thunders, The Saints, les Soucoupes Violentes, The Lyres, The Real Kids, les Remains, c'était eux, c'était New Rose. Ces jours ci, un somptueux livre de photos sort, qui retrace l'histoire incroyable de ce lieu incroyable. Louis Thevenon, l'un des deux piliers de New Rose, était avec nous. Et sa parole est rare.
The first single of a new genre was released on this day in 1976 when The Damned's 'New Rose' hit the shelves. It's classed as the first single from the UK punk scene - a scene that would make headlines around the world. On today's episode you'll hear from The Damned's drummer Rat Scabies as he talks about what it was like in that scene in the very early days!

Plata Þáttarins er fyrsta stóra pönkplatan sem kom út í Bretlandi. Fyrsta plata hljómsveitarinnar The Damned. Hún heitir Damned, damned, damned. Vinur þáttarins sendir pistil og lag að vanda og óskalagasíminn opnar kl. 20.00 - 5687123. Platan kom semsagt út 18. febrúar 1977 á vegum plötuútgáfunnar Stiff. Damned sendi frá sér fyrstu litlu plötuna í október 1976 og þar var á A-hliðinni lagið New Rose sem vakti talsverða athygli meðal ungs fólks í Bretlandi og Evrópu. Þarna var komið eitthvað alveg nýtt, nýtt sánd og nýr kraftur sem byggði reyndar á frumstæðu frum-rokki 50?s og 60?s frumkvöðlanna. Og á B-hliðinni var t.d. Formed in 1983, the original line-up was Michael Rooney (vocals), Tom Rafferty (guitar), Malcolm McDonald (bass), Kevin Key (guitar), and Rhod Burnett (drums). Their first release was the self-financed "Where Are You?" single in 1984, produced by McDonald, after which they were signed by French independent label New Rose. Their first release for the label was the mini-LP Eternal Hotfire. A further single followed before Gordon left, to be replaced by Malcolm McDonald.[1] They recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show in 1985(Don Gordon played guitar on this along with Malcolm McDonald), which was released as an EP in 1987. Rafferty left before the band recorded Sound Hole (New Rose 1986) with McDonald handling all guitar duties as the band built up a following in continental Europe, with a further album following for New Rose in 1987 (Live a Little). Gordon Goudie was recruited as rhythm guitarist in 1986. In late 1987 there was a further line-up change with Burnett and McDonald leaving, the remaining members recruiting Richard Mazda (guitar) and Paul Bridges (drums).

Tav Falco in conversation with David Eastaugh Impressed by a 1978 performance of Falco's at The Orpheum in Memphis that culminated in the chainsawing of a guitar, Alex Chiltonteamed with him. They developed the self-styled "art damage" band, Tav Falco's Panther Burns. The group recorded a first album for Rough Trade at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Their previous 1980 session for the label at Phillips Recording was temporarily shelved (it was later re-released in 1992 on Marilyn Records as The Unreleased Sessions). Falco devoted some of his musical career highlighting great traditional artists who had not gained media attention. He introduced their work to his audiences and to writers following his work by performing Panther Burns shows on billings with these artists, recording interpretations of their songs, and occasionally collaborating with some of them on projects for small record labels he's been associated with, such as Au Go Go and New Rose. Among these artists were blueswoman Jessie Mae Hemphill and rockabilly pioneer Charlie Feathers. Falco and Lux Interior of The Cramps worked on the photography and liner notes, respectively, for the 1982 Honky Tonk Man album by Feathers. Both younger vocalists had been influenced by Feathers' energetic, hiccup-styled vocals of the 1950s. Falco has invited such musicians as Cordell Jackson, R. L. Burnside, Mose Vinson, and Van Zula Hunt to perform at this Panther Burns concerts. Falco has released numerous Panther Burns albums on small international indie labels. He also has co-released some recordings by his band and other Memphis-area artists on his own Frenzi label. Falco has appeared as an actor with small parts in films such as Great Balls of Fire! (1989 - USA), The Big Post Office Robbery (1992 - Hungary), Highway 61 (1991 - Canada), Downtown 81 (2001 - USA), and Wayne County Rambling (2002 - USA). Long a student of the tango under European and Argentine instructors, he appeared in Dans Le Rouge du Couchant (2003 - France) as a tango dancer, and choreographed his part in the film. He has appeared in several short films, most of which he produced and in some cases served as the filmmaker. These have been shown in underground arts venues such as The Horse Hospital in London. In 2003 six of Falco's short films were accepted and archived into the permanent collection of the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. The short films archived are Love's Last Warning(1996), Born Too Late (1993), Helene of Memphis (1991), Memphis Beat (1989), Shadetree Mechanic (1986), and 71 Salvage (1971). A selection of Falco's short films were shown in a retrospective at the Cinémathèque Française in 2006. His first feature film, Urania Descending, was announced in 2014, having been completed the prior year. Tav Falco has collaborated with Erik Morse, an American underground author, rock writer and journalist, on a two volume encyclopedic history and psychogeography of the city of Memphis, Tennessee, entitled MONDO MEMPHIS. Falco's book, Ghosts Behind The Sun/Mondo Memphis: Volume 1, is a study of Memphis beginning with the Civil War up to more recent autobiographical accounts set in the city. Morse's Bluff City Underground/Mondo Memphis: Volume 2 roman noir follows a West Coast graduate student and his encounters with a Memphis secret society. They were published by Creation Books; a paperback edition of Falco's volume was published in November 2011. Falco has said his main artistic purpose is "to stir up the dark waters of the unconscious." Falco has released more than nine album recordings.Conjurations was released in 2011 on a German label, Stag-O-Lee, and a French label, Bang! Records, followed by an American CD release on the Cosmodelic label in October 2011. A live album, Live In London, was released on Stag-O-Lee in 2012. In 2014, Falco compiled a double album of some of his favorite tracks from his music collection, Tav Falco's Wild & Exotic World of Musical Obscurities, released on Stag-o-Lee Records. The album set included a Panther Burns song, "Real Cool Trash", and liner notes by Falco. In 2015, Falco's first book of photography, a collection of images of the gothic South called Iconography of Chance: 99 Photographs of the Evanescent South, was published by Elsinore and distributed by University of Chicago Press. The same year, he toured with Panther Burns and released another album, Command Performance. Tav's most recent studio album is Cabaret of Daggers, released by ORG Music in November 2018.

When the origins of punk are discussed, the ubiquitous names of The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones are mentioned. Alongside those bands, at least two other names should be mentioned - The Saints (hopefully to be discussed another day) and The Damned. Welcome to episode 66 of See Hear Podcast. Tim, Bernie and Maurice look to Wes Orshosky's 2015 documentary "The Damned: Don't you Wish That We Were Dead" for some perspective on the band's career and legacy. The Damned started out as a punk band and released their debut single New Rose (backed with their cover of The Beatles' "Help!") a month before the Pistols' released Anarchy In The UK. Like other acts that started out with punk energy and aggression, they explored different musical avenues over the years, but like so many other bands, their relationships became fractured and their was much animosity.....yet in one form or another, The Damned are still a going concern in 2019. A power drop out prevented our great friend (and super Damned fan) Eric Peterson from joining for the full show, but he came on for the last few minutes to bring his perspective to the band's career and added his thoughts as to how well the documentary actually served the band. Bachelorette and Bachelor star Kaitlyn Bristowe joins Scheana to talk her time on the show(s), healing after a difficult break up, and finding new love!
Brian James doesn't like to sit in one spot for too long. In the mid-70s he joined up with Rat Scabies and the gang to form the pioneering punk band The Damned. That band holds many firsts - first punk band signed to a major label, first punk band to release a single with "New Rose" in 1976, and the first to tour America. But, after an ill-fated second album, the band broke up and Brian went on to play guitar with his hero, Iggy Pop. After a couple years doing that, he joined forces with the great Stiv Bators to form the gothic pop/rock band Lords of the New Church which kept him busy through the 80s until Stiv's untimely death. Since then he's released solo albums, formed super groups like the Racketeers, and collaborated with everyone from Stewart Copeland to Duff McKagan. In here he tells stories about all of it, what punk means to him today, his gratitude for his family and even how Guns n Roses covering "New Rose" changed his fortunes. Enjoy!

Excuse the excitement of your boys Rob and Callum on this new music podcast, this is Callum's last one as A SINGLE MAN and so spirits are high and the banter heads to our opinions on Slow Hands, the Baha Men, the Devon shot called a Squashed Frog and occasionally back to the music. The music is a bag full of killer tunes including the upfront punk of The Cowboy, the Gram Parsons country of New Rose, the rock n roll of The Murlocs, the electro afro-funk of Diron Animal, a Buffalo Springfield cover from Panther Martin and whole lot of other great tunes.Listen up.

Den 22 oktober är det exakt 40 år sedan singeln "New Rose" med The Damned blev den låt som kom att först gravera punken i vinyl. P1 Kultur bjuder in till födelsedagskalas.
Rat Scabies was the drummer for the seminal English punk band, The Damned. Indeed, they were the first English punk band to put out first a single (New Rose, 1976) and then an album (Damned Damned Damned, 1977) on an enterprising little independent record label called Stiff Records. Here, we discuss the formation of the Damned, the appearance of members of The Clash on the Damned's third LP, Machine Gun Etiquette, his career with The Damned and his current projects, one of which is the documentary, The Damned – Don't You Wish That We Were Dead?
On this regular review episode of The Comics Alternative, the first of 2015, Andy and Derek discuss three very different titles. First, they look at the new graphic memoir from Nina Bunjevac, Fatherland: A Family History (Liveright). This is the story of the author's life growing up with — or growing apart from — a father who becomes a staunch Serbian nationalist. Bunjevac provides a bit of history surrounding the Balkans, and does so through sophisticated storytelling, but one of the most outstanding aspects of Fatherland is her highly detailed, almost photographic art. The guys got a little taste of Bunjevac's work, particularly on the subject of her father, in their earlier discussion of Best American Comics of 2014. That collection included an excerpt from her previous book, Heartless, that had a similar feel. In her latest work, Bunjevac provides a more complete, and more complex, story that addresses the various facets of her father and his relationship with the family. Next the Two Guys look at two independent creators with unique offerings. They begin with Andrez Bergen's Bullet Gal (If? Commix), which has is now up to issue #8. This is a different kind of crime or noir story, a fumetti-infused narrative that mixes tried-and-true conventions of the genre with off-beat salutes to classic cinema. As Derek and Andy point out, beginning with issue #7 the story takes a leap down the narrative rabbit hole, turning a mirror onto itself and becoming very Grant Morrisonesque. There are twelve issues planned for this series, and all will be collected in a 348-page trade that will be released this spring, Bullet Gal: It's Not You, It's Me (Under Belly Comics…and a Kickstarter campaign). This is definitely something you have to check out! And the same goes with the next work the guys discuss, Daniel White's self-published 1976. This is perhaps one of the most difficult comics the guys have ever discussed on the show, primarily because most of the narrative is visually driven. Describing it on an audio-only podcast doesn't do the book justice, and you have to see the actual copy to get the complete experience. The first installment, “New Rose,” is a surreal, even psychodelic comic whose framing and action appear to owe a lot to Jack Kirby. Along with the second part — although not yet published, the artist was kind enough to provide a preliminary print-off — it's a punk rock-infused “journey” of self-discovery (maybe?) that strategically utilizes a simple color scheme. In fact, the guys recommend that you listen to White's musical allusions in this comic, The Damned and The Sex Pistols, as you experience the work.

So for the first time, I totally forgot I had a troupe of comedy yahoos coming over for a podcast. After I was a good 2 martinis in, I had message on facebook that stated simply "I think we are here." Holy shit! Well, it worked out just fine and I am pleased to have had 3/4 of the OK Party Comedy troupe in the studio for some beers, laughs, and random banter. Let's just say I had a lot of editing to do, mainly just because I tend to ramble on after a couple of martinis, and boy do I think I'm funny... Enjoy. From their facebook info: OK Party is an Omaha, Nebraska based sketch comedy group that performs monthly comedy events at The Waiting Room Lounge and The Slowdown. They also make sketch comedy videos and pie. They have performed with Doug Benson, Tig Notaro, Howard Kremer, Kyle Kinane, and others. They are very polite and mundane.
