Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel are the founders of Symbolic Sound, creators of the Kyma Sound Design Environment. You may not have heard of the company or its founders, but you have definitely heard its products in films like WALL•E, The Dark Knight, Finding Nemo, games like World of Warcraft, Quake II, Mirror's Edge, and the music of A.R. Rahman. In this episode, Carla and Kurt take us behind the scenes, revealing their philosophy of being “toolmakers” for artists, musicians, and sound designers. They open up about their mission to create tools that enable people to push the boundaries of audio creativity. This conversation touches on the profound intersection of sound, science, and emotion. From the sonification of black holes to music's power in conveying complex scientific ideas, Carla and Kurt challenge us to think differently about the role of sound in shaping our world. One of the standout themes is how music can transcend time—although it unfolds over time, listening to music can create a sensation of stepping outside of time altogether. Composers, like those using Kyma, can manipulate the flow of time, making it feel like it's speeding up or slowing down, creating emotional arcs that resonate deeply with listeners. Carla and Kurt also discuss how sound shapes thought, arguing that people who study music think about time differently. In fact, they suggest music is a kind of sonification of the composer's inner mental state. When we listen, we transpose that state onto ourselves, making music one of the most profoundly meaningful forms of human expression. They also talk about the human instinct for storytelling—just as visual art ranges from literal to abstract, so too can music, ranging from highly structured compositions to avant-garde soundscapes. Even in abstract forms, humans naturally find meaning by recognizing patterns and emotions within sound. This episode offers a rare glimpse into the minds of two innovators who have significantly influenced the field of sound design and music technology. It's a deep exploration of the philosophy of sound, the future of music, and life itself. This is our conversation with Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel, the brilliant minds behind Symbolic Sound Corporation and the Kyma Sound Design Environment. Our guest this week is a free spirit, viewing the world differently to those around her as a young girl, but not sure why. A healthy rebellious streak kept testing boundaries and stretching the "requirements" of the status quo. Leah's natural curiosity leading her to try new things and in finding her own lane to flow to. As a young woman, she embraced her power to create the life she wanted to live having the realisation that work could be fun and also the means to save up, travel and explore to discover what was out there in the world. And gave freedom! The adventures of travel brought colour and experiences that fed her SOul and expansion! At 21 Yoga, meditation and connection to Spirituality deepened her belief in what felt right for her, despite the level of safety offered by staying within a "normal path of growing up". Leah has walked her own road to achieve her goals, we could say driven and motivated - there is a divine sense of gratitude emanating and we see a woman creating with a calm and happy external manner but we also gather after sitting with her, living also with deep innate knowingness of what she wants. That inner fire every Goddess holds within her essence! Leah & her husband Adam have birthed from their worldly experiences, something as a reflection of their worldly experiences with Nature and Spirit perhaps, Kyma Wellness Lab. In a world that often drains our vitality, demands our constant attention, and distracts us from our true purpose, Kyma serves as your exclusive retreat—a sanctuary where you can replenish your physical, mental, and spiritual energy. Leah and her husband Adam have designed every aspect of their offerings at Kyma to create the ultimate biohacking experience through state-of-the-art wellness technologies, empowering your body's natural healing abilities. Her polyrhythmic compositions integrate a wide array of musical genres, including Afrofuturistic electro and techno, classical solo piano and Detroit legacy house; all memorable journeys into deep, abstracted sound.Praised by the Guardian for enacting a new wave of club music, named by Dummy Mag as one of 2019's most exciting artists, Afrodeutsche's spectacular debut album ‘Break Before Make' was released on the legendary Skam label in 2018, followed in 2019 with the debut release on Eclair Fifi's label River Rapid and a much praised remixes for artists as diverse as Marie Davidson (Ninja Tune), Joep Beving (Deutsche Grammophon) and Nathan Fake (Cambria Instruments).AFRODEUTSCHE has written and performed scores for films and documentaries including the BAFTA nominated ‘Kamali' about a young girl skateboarder in India, and a live re-score of renowned Earth documentary ‘Baraka' at The Royal Northern College of Music. The soundtrack for ‘Kamali' was released by SA Recordings in September 2020, alongside a sample library for Spitfire. The audio library illuminates much of Henrietta's writing process as a self-taught musician and composer. Inspired by her work with the Kyma sound design environment, it's a set of tools for composition based around colour. Her aim is to offer a new perspective and a sense of freedom for those delving into the library, no matter their level of experience. In the summer of 2022 she scored Bottega Veneta's SS2023 collection runway show, during Milan Fashion Week working, closely with head designer Matthieu Blazy throughout the process. In 2023 she premiered a new string ensemble commission for MIF at the prestigious new Factory International venue. Henrietta lent her own vocals and piano playing alongside a sting ensemble from the Manchester Camerata, arranged and conducted by Robert Ames. After years hosting a regular radio show ‘Black Forest' on the renowned NTS, AFRODEUTSCHE now leads BBC 6 Music's Friday night schedule with the Peoples Party, a peak time show that entrances listeners with her idiosyncratic combinations of crate dug party tunes from any point in the last 50 years, acid, rave, electro, breaks, footwork, ghetto tech and jacking house. In 2022 she has regularly presented BBC 6 Music live coverage of festivals at Glastonbury and Cardiff. At the end of the summer she curated the 6 Music stage for London festival ‘All Points East'. Her DJ style is a synthesis of Drexciyan and Underground Resistance-inspired selections, intercut with a variety of forward thinking UK techno such as Bola and Lego Feet. Forever evolving a fully live hardware show, AFRODEUTSCHE debuted it at the opening of CTM Festival at Berghain in February 2020, integrating classical piano and hardware along with visuals. https://linktr.ee/afrodeutscheCaro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album 'Electric Mountain' is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. This 'sonic enchantress' (BBC Radio 3) has now played in most of the cultural hotspots of her current hometown of Manchester, UK.

Austin Rocconi / Food & Beverage Director of Boone's Restaurant Austin Rocconi familiarized himself with cooking at a young age, growing up in Mississippi in a large Italian family focused on food and the joy of preparing it. While attending Delta State University in pursuit of a degree in business management, Rocconi took a job washing dishes at a local restaurant and immediately became enamored with the fast-paced atmosphere of the kitchen. After attending culinary school in Pasadena, California, and working in LA at several locations, including The Jonathan Club, he found his way back to the South, landing in Atlanta. Feeling more aligned with his Southern upbringing, Rocconi worked his way up within several renowned Atlanta restaurants, including Kyma and Canoe. He took his first executive chef role at Le Vigne Restaurant at Montaluce Winery in 2011. How excited are we to talk Thingies with Collier Meyerson? So. Her most recent project Love Thy Neighbor is a podcast about a 1991 event known as the Crown Heights riot and what it says about about racism, antisemitism, and police violence here and now. Collier comes bearing books, outdoor couches, and alt uses for photo-printing sites. But first: a bit of breast-feeding intel. Some further reading from our breastfeeding/weaning discussion: Joanna Goddard's piece about her first episode of depression and how it happened right after abruptly quit breastfeeding (and be sure to read the comments!) and Meaghan O'Connell's "Life on Planet Weaning" in The Cut (also Meaghan's book And Now We Have Everything: On Motherhood Before I Was Ready, and, yes, her Twitter feed). Different but related: “It Feels Like Every Mom I Know Is Medicated” from Romper—plus Best C-Section Ever and Romper in general!—and, uh, Moody Bitches. Listen to Love Thy Neighbor, Collier's five-episode podcast about the riots that took place over four days in 1991 in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. So good, so personal. Collier's Thingies include Dr. Scholl's Molefoam Padding Strips for pesky bra wires, the Eliot Patio Loveseat from Target, and Bad Sex: Truth, Pleasure, and an Unfinished Revolution by Nona Willis Aronowitz (out in August). If you're inspired by Collier's femme sandal pursuit, here's her Kyma pair (They arrived; she loves them.). She also recommends a Tosaryu hinoki incense and holder duo from Jinen for a housewarming gift and Artifact Uprising baby board books for gifts in general—not just for babies. LINKS MENTIONED: Website www.chefpano.com BIO: Chef Pano I. Karatassos Executive Chef Kyma and Corporate Executive Chef Buckhead Life Restaurant Group As Executive Chef of Atlanta's acclaimed Kyma restaurant, Chef Pano I. Karatassos has redefined the taste, style and ingredients that comprise what he refers to as Modern Greek Cooking. Pano grew up in the kitchen, watching and listening as his Yiayia (Grandmother) prepared traditional foods, and worked magic with traditional Greek ingredients like olives, olive oil and honey.--three tastes that are central to Greek culture and cooking. In the 1980s and '90s, Pano I. Karatassos watched his father, Pano Karatassos, founder and CEO of the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, trail blaze the Atlanta culinary scene. The legendary restaurant Pano's & Paul's, then 103 West, Buckhead Diner, Chops, Pricci, Atlanta Fish Market, Lobster Bar. All restaurants synonymous with the best ingredients, highest quality service and attention to detail. The younger Pano's culinary path really began when he was 16 years old and working in his father's kitchens. It continued with formal schooling: a degree in hospitality management from Florida International University in 1993 and one from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., in 1996. In 2001, he opened the Greek restaurant Kyma, and continues to hold a leadership position as Corporate Executive Chef within the family-owned business that has since expanded south, into the Florida cities of Boca Raton, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale. In late 2018, Chef Pano released his 1st cookbook, in collaboration with his cousin, Sophia Perpera, one of the world's leading authorities on Greek wines, with photography by acclaimed food photographer Francesco Tonelli. Longtime friend and mentor, Thomas Keller authored the book's forward. On August 1, 2019, Chef Pano competed on the Food Network's show, Beat Bobby Flay. Chef Pano prepared his Signature Dish, Lamb Pie and DEFEATED BOBBY FLAY! DISCLOSURE: Pano I. Karatassos is not affiliated with Three Bridges Financial Group or AE Wealth Management, LLC. Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and raised in Oakville, Ontario, Evanka Osmak is best known for her work at Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto. A career in sports television was not part of her initial plan, though...She graduated with a Civil Engineering degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. She's been back home in Toronto at Sportsnet ever since 2007 covering everything from the Toronto Blue Jays return to the playoffs in 2015, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and reporting court side at the Rogers Cup.Catch Evanka weekday evenings on Sportsnet Central along with her co-anchor, Ken Reid and find out more about her work below.
