In this episode of What Makes You Wonderful, we talk with Erin Noon from Charleston Area Alliance to discuss the upcoming Elevations luncheon. This event highlights the achievements and stories of women leaders in the military. The luncheon is slated Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Embassy Suites in Charleston and offers an inspiring lineup of speakers and provides attendees with a chance to connect and network. Erin also shares how Charleston Area Alliance supports the local business community and the resources available. For more information you can go to their website: https://charlestonareaalliance.org/ Text Version Tiffney It's time for the What Makes You Wonderful podcast! Hey there everyone! I'm your host, Tiffney Lopez, and this is where we talk about what makes Almost Heaven amazing. Be sure to check out the hashtag WMYW to find all the cool things that we talk about right here on the podcast. Today, we're going to talk about an event called Elevations. It's November 13th at Embassy Suites in Charleston, and I'd like to introduce all of you to Erin Noon. She's the Communications and Events Coordinator at Charleston Area Alliance. Erin, thank you so much for being here. Erin Tiffney, thank you so much for having me. I'm really, really excited to be here today Tiffney And I'm excited for what we're getting ready to talk about. It's this Elevations luncheon. This is pretty exciting. Erin Absolutely. Elevations is a series that we do periodically throughout the year, usually quarterly, and it features female speakers and unites Charleston's professionals, both women and men, to learn and be inspired by the journeys, challenges, and accomplishments of strong female leaders and role models. So this upcoming one is, like you said, November 13th, and it's going to be at Embassy Suites, and we're going to actually feature four women who are in the military—two who are currently serving and two who have served and have since gotten out of the military. They are Brigadier General Michaelle Munger. She's the Special Assistant to the Adjutant General of West Virginia, Major Caroline Muriama, and she's the West Virginia National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion Commander. And then we have Lee Ann Haley, who was a former Army captain, and Mara Boggs , who is a former Army major and very distinguished. Inspiring women who I think will share some really cool stories and insights from their time in the military. Tiffney What do events like this provide for people when they come and they hear these speakers? What do you see happening by the end of it? Erin I think it really inspires those who are in the room, and it gives them an opportunity to relate to maybe something that they've been through or take away a message of resilience and perseverance. And it gives women—and men alike—an opportunity to network with one another and see what everybody's going through and what they have going on in their personal lives and professional lives. It's a really good way to connect with someone and take something away from it, whether it's, you know, you're inspired by their story or something that they've done in the past. Just taking away something with you is really the goal. Tiffney Like you said, this isn't the only event you have. But for those who don't know, Charleston Area Alliance is a way that you guys bring businesses together, right? Explain to me how that works. Erin We're a very unique organization. We bring all of our county's community and economic development communities together, and then we're also a traditional Chamber of Commerce. We're all under one roof. We were built on a legacy of three different organizations that came together back in 2004. We're on our 20th anniversary and we really try to bring the business community together and have them have an alliance with one another. Tiffney What's your favorite part about whether it's events like this or being part of that larger networking? What's your favorite part about doing all this? Erin I think just being out in the community, you know, meeting different people, seeing what they're going through, and learning about, you know, economic and community development. It's not something that I was familiar with when I took this role. And I think learning about the different challenges that the business community faces, whether it's a large corporation or a small, small little business that started from the ground up. They all do share common, you know, goals and struggles alike. So it's been really fun just to get out there and learn about the business community. Tiffney And you guys have those resources to help each business. So my next question is whether somebody is interested in this event that's happening November 13th or they're just interested in the Charleston Area Alliance. Where can they go for more information? Erin I would say the easiest way to check us out would be to go to CharlestonAreaAlliance.org. We have all of our information on there, stuff that we've done in the past, stuff that we're currently doing. We have a community calendar of events like Elevations and other things that we have going on, or stuff that our members post on there. So that's probably the easiest way to check us out or just call (304) 340-4253 and ask for any of our staff members. We're a small but mighty team, and we're willing to help out in any capacity that we can. Tiffney I like it, "small but mighty." Just like West Virginia. Erin You're right! Tiffney Erin, thank you so much for being here today. And thank you for telling us what makes you wonderful. Erin Thanks for having me, Tiffney. I had fun. What Makes You Wonderful is a feature of the daily304, your window into wonderful Almost Heaven, West Virginia. In this episode, we're talking to four of the horrific minds behind two recent releases by Crystal Lake Publishing: “Never Wake: An Anthology of Dream Horror” and “Dark Tide 10: The Dead Shall Rise.” In the first interview, Max talks with Kenneth Cain and Tim Meyer, the editors of this collection of short stories with a dream horror theme. We talk about what dream horror is and how the different authors express it in their stories. Kenneth and Tim go into the editing process and how they worked with the different authors to improve their work while at the same time preserving their original voice. We talk about the book's cover art, which has a wonderfully trippy cover. Following this, Max and Curtis are chatting with Armand Rosamilia and Erin Louis, two of the three writers who contributed to ‘The Dead Shall Rise,” a collection of zombie stories. Jay Wilburn, who wrote “Prepare Because Death is Coming” passed away in 2022. Armand and Erin talk about Jay's story and their experience with him as a writer and friend. We also go into their stories—Armand's has a family on vacation when the zombie apocalypse breaks out and Erin's main character Tiffney leading a group of survivors at a strip club assaulted by the living dead. Both talk about their interest in zombies and the new directions that this book took them in.

We hear how - after an argument with her 18-year-old son Sean - Louise supposedly left her flat at around midnight without bank cards, cash, extra clothing or her passport. After weeks of fruitless searching for Louise, a hunch by a detective on the case brought the investigation much closer to home.Following a trial that ended with no conviction, the case stagnated until 2017, when the discovery of human remains reignited the investigation and ultimately led to the cases shocking conclusion.Case research by Emma TaylorProduced by Emma Taylor & Joannagh ShanksEditing by Bonnie BelovedMusic by Tribe of NoiseSources of research:https://liveedinburghnews.co.uk/2018/11/28/breaking-crown-applies-to-retry-sean-flynn-in-connection-with-louise-tiffney-death/https://www.spa.police.uk/spa-media/02jlu0xc/rep-b-20200214-item-3-chief-constable-s-report.pdfhttps://crime.scot/2019/02/19/double-jeopardy-never-say-never-again/https://www.countytimes.co.uk/news/national-news/17261588.son-face-louise-tiffney-retrial-double-jeopardy-law/https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/3249709/who-is-louise-tiffney-heres-what-we-know-about-edinburgh-mum-who-went-missing-15-years-ago/https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/788836/sean-flynn-left-scotland-police-remains-louise-tiffneyhttps://www.dumbartonreporter.co.uk/news/national-news/17731113.louise-tiffney-death-date-fixed-hearing-prosecutors-seek-retry-son/https://news.stv.tv/east-central/warrant-issued-for-arrest-of-man-accused-of-murdering-his-mum?tophttps://www.bordertelegraph.com/news/national/17731113.louise-tiffney-death-date-fixed-hearing-prosecutors-seek-retry-son/https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/12397999.this-is-not-justice-for-louise-she-is-dead-and-her-name-has-been-dragged-in-mud-the-mystery-and-anguish-for-a-family-goes-on-writes-brian-donnelly/https://www.thefreelibrary.com/When+jury+came+back+I+thought+the+verdict+would+be+guilty..+I%27m+so...-a0130375319http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4351351.stmhttps://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/scottish-news/7927310/louise-tiffney-murder-son-sean-flynn-legal-aid/https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Not+proven+son+to+face+second+trial+over+murder+of+his+mum%3B...-a0563659574https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/crime/gosford-human-remains-could-be-missing-louise-tiffney-1452519https://www.pressreader.com/uk/the-scottish-mail-on-sunday/20211024/281741272624506https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/apr/07/remains-woman-missing-15-years-found-stately-home-louise-tiffneyhttps://www.heraldscotland.com/news/11960658.the-mystery-of-a-lost-mother-her-errant-son-and-a-child-who-waits-when-louise-tiffney-went-missing-it-was-feared-the-pressure-of-her-sons-appearance-in-court-was-too-much-now-however-the-investigation-has-taken-a-sinister-turn-rebecca-mcquill/https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-39527609https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/who-sean-flynn-scot-found-25277930https://www.eastlothiancourier.com/news/19162054.louise-tiffney-son-sean-flynn-stand-trial-murder-charge-later-year/https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/sean-flynns-mother-volatile-character-25289601https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/6605805/son-denies-murder-mum-louise-tiffney-edinburgh/https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/scottish-news/7887719/louise-tiffney-murder-scot-dead-spain-apartment/https://www.scotsman.com/news/crime/louise-tiffney-sean-flynn-set-to-stand-trial-in-october-accused-of-mothers-murder-3166165https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-59011735https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-56402261https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-louise-tiffney-murder-case-21953774https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-son-accused-murdering-mother-22233357?utm_source=mantis_rec&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=more_like_thishttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3535084.stmhttps://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/mysterious-last-days-edinburgh-son-22021598

Tiffney Laing is the founder of Bevy & Dave; an award-winning educational toy company devoted to changing the narrative of Black history and building leaders through fun and engaging learning tools designed for preschool- elementary age students. For many years she was frustrated with the presentation of Black history in school textbooks and teaching materials as the focus is always on slavery and oppression. With the belief that what we learn at a young age shapes and impacts our worldview and level of achievement, Tiffney decided to contribute towards a solution. After her daughter was born, Tiffney was reminded that children learn through play; soon after, she launched Bevy & Dave to serve as teaching tools for parents and teachers alike to share Black history through the lens of self-leadership, which focuses on achievements and contributions to our society. Tiffney's unique and unconventional work has been recognized among industry peers and featured in various media platforms, including GMA3 "Second Act Showdown." Good Morning America with Strahan, Sara, and Keke and MSNBC with Stephanie Ruhle. Within Bevy & Dave's first exhibition year, its flagship toy, the “History Makers Puzzle Block Set (HMPBS),” was a finalist for Toy of the Year Award, Rookie category, and is the winner of the 2018 Product of the Year Award by Creative Child Magazine and the 2018 Family Choice award. Prior to Bevy & Dave, Tiffney served in higher education developing student leaders as an administrator and instructor of leadership studies. Tiffney was also enrolled in a doctoral program with research focused on how children learn and understand Black history and its impact on their achievement level. Tiffney left the program to focus on developing solutions to the problem rather than continue to study it.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Texas-based activist Tiffney Lee Billions of We the People Organize and Billions TV joins us to discuss the fatal police shooting of Botham Jean and Atatiana Jefferson as well as the broader problem of police misconduct in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Billions has tirelessly sought to raise awareness of police brutality in the Dallas-Forth Worth area by closely following and cataloguing multiple cases in the area. During the course of her activism she has visited the crime scene of the Botham Jean murder, come into conflict with the Dallas Morning News, and appears to have recently been monitored Dallas PD at an event designed to raise awareness of police misconduct. Although this may seem like a regional issue, Tiffney and I argue that the policing problem in Dallas-Forth Worth are an example of a broader crisis facing America as a nation. Much like the murder of Botham Jean by Dallas PD officer Amber Guyger, the fatal police shooting of 28 year-old Ft. Worth, Texas resident Atatiana Jefferson has sparked outrage in the Lone Star State that's garnered national attention. Atatiana was babysitting her 8-year old nephew Zion when she heard noises outside her home during the early morning hours of October 12th, 2019. Likely alarmed by the possibility of an intruder, Atatiana, as per the testimony of her nephew, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the window. A voice yelled out, “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” Seconds later a shot was fired. Those were the final moments of Atatiana Jefferson’s life before she was terminated from this mortal coil. Ft. Worth officer Aaron Dean arrived at Jefferson’s home for a police welfare check after a neighbor had called a non-emergency number to report that the front door of Jefferson's home was open. He did not, as far as we know, announce his presence. Two days after the fatal incident, on October 14th, Officer Dean resigned from the Dallas Police Department and was arrested on charges of murdering Atatiana Jefferson. Coupled with the murder of Botham Jean on September 6th 2018, the deadly shooting of Atatiana Jefferson has raised serious concerns about police misconduct in North Texas and America as a whole. In this conversation Tiffney dissects both the Botham Jean and Atatiana Jefferson cases and offers her critique of how local police and media handled said cases. Additionally, she explains why members of the Dallas-Fort Worth community see these incidents as being part of a broader, systemic problem that demands immediate reforms within DFW police departments. CORRECTION: In the intro I state "shot were fired" at Atatiana Jefferson. Officer Dean fired a single shot that fatally wounded Jefferson. SUPPORT PARALLAX VIEWS ON PATREON! WHERE YOU CAN HEAR...
