Join us as we sit down with John McGlothlin, a former US Army paratrooper turned author, to discuss the invaluable lessons from his military experience that translate into everyday life. John shares his compelling personal journey from his youth, living with his grandmother, to his post-9/11 military service as an Arabic linguist, JAG officer, and eventually an adjunct professor. Listen in as we unravel the five key traits that John has identified and cultivated throughout his career, all of which he masterfully ties into his book, "How to Deal with Damn Near Anything: The Paratrooper's Guide to Life."Through John's captivating anecdotes, we uncover not only the strength forged in the camaraderie of a 'battle buddy' but also how military discipline can shape the way we form relationships and set boundaries in every aspect of life. From the transformative power of learning to speak up to the critical role of feedback in personal growth, John's reflections offer a blueprint for personal development that resonates beyond the military sphere. As we chart a course through the challenges of AI and social media's impact on today's youth, John's insights serve as a beacon, guiding us toward a more resilient and adaptable future. Don't miss this deep dive into the profound lessons that John has to offer; it might just change the way you face your daily battles.John's links;https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnmauthor/https://www.johnmcglothlin.com/Undercurrent Stories Links;https://www.undercurrentstories.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/1UVol5gkqWKltoi5PrJ4F9?si=beeaa5b354bd42f8https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/undercurrent-stories/id1508727524https://www.instagram.com/undercurrentstories/www.undercurrentstories.com
What's the key takeaway from the simultaneous stories at the end of 2023 that a Senate staffer is unceremoniously fired for filming a gay porno of himself getting railed in a US Senate hearing room and Trump getting kicked off the Colorado ballot for allegedly inciting an "insurrection?" Well, two things. First, the people endlessly screeching about decency and democracy care about neither. To them, some grandmas taking unapproved strolls through their Capitol building is indecent and violent, but filming a porn where Supreme Court justices are confirmed and 9/11 hearings were conducted is just an unfortunate personnel matter. Second, the School House Rock version of government, where it is "of, by, and for you" is a complete fabrication. You're not allowed to vote for who you want if who you want to vote for is pathologically hated by the side that films said pornos in the Senate, and they will stop at nothing (including making up narratives out of whole cloth) to take away your ability to vote for who you want. Democracy is dead and the ones screaming the loudest to save it are the ones that killed it.

In this episode, I am happy to be interviewing historian and author Dr. Jacqueline R. Braitman about her very engaging biography, She Damn Near Ran the Studio: The Extraordinary Lives of Ida R. Koverman (University Press of Mississippi, 2020). This very detailed and comprehensively researched book tells the story of Ida Koverman, whose life was almost accidentally remarkable. She was not only Louis B. Mayer's gatekeeper at MGM for over two decades but also a major mover and shaker in the conservative wing of the California Republican party throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Coming from humble beginnings in Ohio, when Ulysses S. Grant was president, Koverman worked tirelessly to elect Herbert Hoover to the White House. In addition, she made a remarkable contribution to American culture, scouting and nurturing the iconic stars of the future at MGM, while also acting as a spokesperson for the studio and its relationship to the politicians of the day. In this interview, Dr. Braitman describes how she came to admire Ida Koverman, whose politics are far to the right of the author's views, and how she was met with surprises throughout the years-long process of writing She Damn Near Ran the Studio. I hope you'll join me for this engaging and informative conversation with Dr. Jacqueline R. Braitman. Hosts and PTSI Resilience Trainers John Salerno and Samantha Horwitz talk with John McGlothlin, U.S. Army Airborne Captain, and author of How to Deal With Damn Near Anything - The Paratrooper's Guide to Life on A Badge of Honor Podcast. There is a hidden side to the military—behind the stories of leadership and valor is a distinct culture that promotes personal growth and development. In How to Deal with Damn Near Anything: The Paratrooper's Guide to Life, John McGlothlin shows how this culture can benefit anyone.Using a mix of research and first-hand experience, McGlothlin distills this culture into five “inner traits” essential to facing any challenge. Each trait is examined in detail: what they mean, how they fit together, how to build them, and why being a paratrooper offers a unique perspective on doing so.No place fuses personal and professional like the “airborne.” The result is a series of lessons no classroom or regular workplace can teach. You don't have to enlist to learn them–you just have to embrace the right mix of practical thinking, honesty, and a desire to improve. How to Deal with Damn Near Anything will guide you through that process and put you on the right path for stability and success.
