On the 26th of December 1944, Lt. John Fox commanded a mere 70 Americans - all of whom were black - against a massive German assault. The mountaintop village of Sommocolonia, along Italy's northern most border, stood between the Germans and the strategic port of Livorno, 40 miles south. If successful, they would have choked off supplies to the Allied forces. In Lt. John Fox's first and only battle, his heroism stopped that from happening. John repeatedly called for defensive artillery fire to slow the enemy advance, closer and closer to his own position. The artillery, fired by John's men of the US Army's legendary and segregated 92nd Infantry Division, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers,  killed over 100 German Soldiers and held the rest off long enough to turn the tide of the battle. Prior to serving in the Army - because he was an African American - John had to transfer from Ohio State to Wilberforce University, just to be allowed into ROTC training. In 1996 John was one of seven African Americansposthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the US Military's Highest Decoration, by President Bill Clinton.Thank you to the family of Lt. John Fox and thank you for listening to Heroes Behind Headlines.

Tune in to episode #84 of Ethnic Ish N More with host's NicoThaGreat & Co host Past Master and our HBCU Alumni spectacular!!!Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were established to serve the educational needs of black Americans. Prior to the time of their establishment, and for many years afterwards, blacks were generally denied admission to traditionally white institutions. As a result, HBCUs became the principle means for providing postsecondary education to black Americans.Prior to the Civil War, there was no structured higher education system for black students. Public policy and certain statutory provisions prohibited the education of blacks in various parts of the nation. The Institute for Colored Youth, the first higher education institution for blacks, was founded in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, in 1837. It was followed by two other black institutions--Lincoln University, in Pennsylvania (1854), and Wilberforce University, in Ohio (1856).Although these institutions were called universities" or "institutes" from their founding, a major part of their mission in the early years was to provide elementary and secondary schooling for students who had no previous education. It was not until the early 1900s that HBCUs began to offer courses and programs at the postsecondary level.Following the Civil War, public support for higher education for black students was reflected in the enactment of the Second Morrill Act in 1890. The Act required states with racially segregated public higher education systems to provide a land-grant institution for black students whenever a land-grant institution was established and restricted for white students. After the passage of the Act, public land-grant institutions specifically for blacks were established in each of the southern and border states. As a result, some new public black institutions were founded, and a number of formerly private black schools came under public control; eventually 16 black institutions were designated as land-grant colleges. These institutions offered courses in agricultural, mechanical, and industrial subjects, but few offered college-level courses and degrees.Wanna support the show, Donate at $Nicomar10 Numerology Corner: The numerology number 84 resonates with creative expression. Special Guest Officer Nakia Jones. Prayer by Mother Joan Johnson “THE TRUTH DIVIDED” Officer Nakia Jones Being called for a time such as this, Officer Nakia Jones’ passionate and heartfelt outcry over the death of Alton Sterling and other young African American males went viral and took the nation by storm. As seen on BET, The Roland Martin Show, The Tom Joyner Show and other media outlets across the country, Officer Jones has been vocal about her outrage over the actions taken by some of her fellow men in blue. This life altering experience, inspired Officer Jones to write her book “The Truth Divided”, which was released in April of 2018. Born in Cleveland Ohio, Officer Jones is the oldest of her siblings. In 1990 she graduated from Shaw High School and attended Wilberforce University. She chose Criminal Justice as her major because she was aspiring to become a prosecuting attorney. However, in 1996 she chose a different career path and in September of that year she was sworn in as a Police Officer for the City of East Cleveland. Ironically, this was the same city in which she lived and graduated from high school. Officer Jones always wanted to be a productive member in her neighborhood. In 1999 Officer Jones joined the Highland Hills Police Department and in 2002 she was sworn in as the first African American female officer for the City of Warrensville Heights. She held that position as the Senior Response Officer until 2017. Officer Jones not only worked for the City of Warrensville Heights, but she also lived in the city. She is an active member of her community and volunteers for career day throughout the district. On many occasions, Officer Jones sat with Juveniles and their families, while off duty, to help resolve conflict. Officer Jones’ fervent plea over the death of Alton Sterling shook the nation. As her words resounded from coast to coast, it became clear that her life would never be the same. She has already released her book, “The Truth Divided” and is now considering authoring a follow up book, as her journey for justice continues. Officer Jones wants to leave a positive mark on the world. She believes that if you want change it starts with the person you look at every day in the mirror; if you want change you must be that change. A strong woman of faith, Officer Jones is also a well-known Gospel Play write in Cleveland Ohio. She believes that through her gospel plays she can help restore hope and change lives one gospel play at a time. If you ask Officer Jones about a quote that describes her, she would say “I am my sister and my brother’s keeper”. She believes that with a little compassion and unselfishness we all can make a difference and can change the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/preachlafleur/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/preachlafleur/support
