The 2026 FIFA World Cup will bring enormous public safety demands to cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico — including places that are not hosting matches. For Dallas, the challenge is especially complex: While games will be played in nearby Arlington, the city will serve as home to FIFA's International Broadcast Centre and host major fan events expected to draw international crowds. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, guest host Rob Lawrence talks with Lt. Mark Rickerman of the Dallas Police Department about how the agency is preparing for the 2026 World Cup and what other departments can learn from the process. Rickerman discusses the challenges of coordinating across law enforcement, fire, transit, private security, event organizers, local government and federal partners, as well as the importance of building plans that can change quickly once the event begins. This is a special bonus episode as we say goodbye to our incredible friend and co creator of the show Danny Canete #8834. I wanted Danny, and the listeners to get to hear what some of the many people said about getting to work with Danny and share this wild life and career at Dallas PD. I am a big believer in that your reputation isn't what you think of yourself but what others think of you and how you impacted their life. There are so many stories, so many laughs, tears, and incredible moments that make up a twenty year career. Love you buddy, take care of yourself and that beautiful family. Below is just one of the many unique stories and inside peeks inside Danny's family and life. Dan Canete was born and raised in the Philippines. Dan had lived on the island of Leyte during WWII. He had experienced Japanese Zeros and guerrilla warfare in the jungles and MacArthur landing on the island. He married Evelyn Senit and had a son, Allen. He immigrated (legally) from the Philippines to the US with their four year old son, Allen, in 1963. Four years later their daughter Lisa was born. They lived on both coasts pursuing advanced education for Dan. He earned his doctorate in psychology and became a college professor. Later in life he liked to be called "Doc Dan". Along many other talents he was a musician. He loved the USA and all it gave to him and his family. In their retired years they finally settled in Corpus Christi, Texas where a strong community of Filipino families lived and churched Allen married Kim. Their first child was a son. They named him after both his grandfathers, Daniel James. He has always been known as Danny. Danny's grandmother, Evelyn, died in 2019. His grandfather, Daniel, called Lolo by his family, decided to remain in his home in Corpus Christi. In 2020 the US suffered not only the onslaught of Covid but also the George Floyd riots. As a Senior Corporal with Dallas SWAT, Danny and his team had been running for days and weeks through the city of Dallas protecting the city from the riots. On June 14 Lolo called the ambulance because he was not feeling well. He died of Covid June 17. As soon as he learned his father was sick Allen had booked flights and was headed to Texas from South Dakota. Lolo died before he could get there. Allen continued down to Corpus Christi to take care of immediate needs. He spent Father's Day writing his dad's obituary. On July 25, 2020 Hurricane Hanna (Danny's daughter is named Hannah) swept through Corpus Christi. Allen and Kim had driven down to Dallas. Allen's sister, Lisa, and her life partner, Scott, had left their Manhattan apartment for the first time since Covid hit and flew into Dallas. In Dallas Danny joined his mom and dad and aunt and uncle. They all drove down to Corpus Christi on July 26 to close up and put Lolo's house up for sale. They drove through a torrential rainstorm. Once in Corpus Christi they all checked into a hotel then they all piled into one car and headed over to Lolo's house. Allen had gotten into the house in June. But, they were unsure if the garage could be opened. As Allen and Scott messed with the garage door Danny jumped out of the car and walked up to the front. Kim thought he was going to try the front door. But, no. Lolo had a tall flagpole where he had displayed his American flag. The flag was in a wet heap on the ground. Danny went over to pick it up. So much came together in that moment. The immigrant grandfather, so patriotic, and so very proud of his grandson, dies of Covid. The namesake grandson stepping back from policing riots of people spewing hate for the USA to say good-bye and give his grandfather and his country the respect they deserved.
Ep. 83 - Chief Daniel Comeaux, the 31st Chief of Police of the Dallas Police Department joins me to look back at his first year in the role – his initiatives, his accomplishments as well as his goals for the future. Chief came to the job with 35 years in law enforcement, six with Houston PD starting in 1991 where he spent much of his time in narcotics; and 28 with the DEA which he joined in 1997.As I say in the episode, I think Chief of Police is a tough job, no matter what department, no matter what city. And the first year in that position has to be the most demanding – fraught with scrutiny, challenges and potential pitfalls – especially when you come in as an outsider to the department and to the city and on top of that, when you're coming to it after 28 years on the Federal side.In this interview, you will hear just how well Chief Comeaux has navigated these waters. He has drawn on all of his experience to define his role, strengthen the department, reduce crime and successfully recruit. He has done it judiciously with keen insight, thoughtful decisions, and I would add, humor. We talk about what shaped him and his leadership style over the years. We discuss what drew him to law enforcement, and some memorable stories from patrol in Houston including the people he remembers and all those fights and foot chases. We cover his time with DEA and talk about the case he is most proud of; the challenges of working hundreds of miles of the Mexican border while in both Tucson and Houston; and his work navigating every drug epidemic over those 28 years, from crack to ecstasy, meth, opioids and now fentanyl.Thank you, Chief for a great interview and for taking the time. And thanks DPD Officer Joe King head of DPD's wellness unit and host of the podcast ATO Bridging the Divide for connecting me with Chief and allowing me to share Chief's story with my audience. In memory of Terry Bacon 1950-2015 Today we welcome Mark Bacon back to the show to finally tell his story. We last heard from Mark in episode 127, as we talked about our time together on the South East CRT, but this story puts the spotlight squarely on a very private man's life. I have personally wanted to do his episode for years, but Mark being Mark, did not want to come on to talk about himself. Sgt Bacon takes us about to growing up in Missouri, country life, and his path to gaining a love and respect for the law enforcement profession. Marks LE journey started in Missouri, and he quickly developed a work ethic and passion that he would eventually come to Dallas Pd. Dallas PD Assignments: Patrol Operation Disruption Southeast CRT Narcotics: Street Squads, Lab Unit Creator of the Overdose Squad Promotion of Sgt: Patrol, CRT, Sgt of Overdose Squad, Dallas Mayors Detail As you can see the man is successful and this is just noting his professional side with DPD. “Trust God, Clean House, Serve Others” The Assist the Officer Foundation sits down with an incredibly accomplished and unique individual today in Sgt. Andre Taylor of Dallas SWAT. As Dre grew up in the South side of Chicago, he regularly witnessed acts of violence but also witnessed an incredible community and family as his mother was ever present in his upbringing ensuring he didn't fall prey to the many negative lifestyles of the streets that could lead to him in jail or dead. Life laid itself out for Andre as he found himself moving to Dallas Texas to join the Police force in 1999 and began serving the City of Dallas. He joined the Dallas SWAT team in 2003 and trained under some of the toughest SWAT trainers who exposed him to a new level of police work . Andre experienced several critical incidents during his time in SWAT and one that sticks out more than others is an incident that's familiar to this show. The hostage rescue on Martel still haunts everyone that was a part of that operation. After leaving SWAT he joined the Dallas Mounted Unit and learned the tools to have a partner, Tommy, that weighed over 1500 lbs. and quickly understood the power and beauty of horses and saw the importance of community policing. Andre Taylor returned to Dallas SWAT years later and found himself in a new role as the leader and not the operator, so he had to learn to develop tools for his new role as being a boss to high performing and highly trained operators. Dre has always been in control of his life and his own destiny however in January of 2023 he looked into the mirror and did not like what he saw and realized he could not control an aspect of his life. As he contemplated his new direction, he typed out on email that would change his life, both personally and professionally, forever as he knew once he hit the send button everything would change. Once he hit send and the first step in climbing a new mountain was taken and now Dre found himself in a completely new world as he had to ask for help to regain control of his life. The listener will have to finish this story and hear Andre's new challenge in life and career as he found a new purpose and “why”. We are hoping Dre finds that needed time now to work on his old cars and roller skate. ATO Family you are never alone in this life…….Please always reach out. Ep. 79 As Child Abuse Detective Kristen King says in this episode, “If you haven't cried in child abuse, you probably haven't been there long enough or you're lying.” In the years I've interviewed law enforcement, officers have always said that incidents with kids are the hardest. I wanted to shine a light on those that handle these cases on a daily basis. Kristen has been with Dallas PD for 12 years. We review her career and talk about her not so predictable path to choosing law enforcement, some memorable calls from patrol and making the move to Child Abuse, something she said she knew she wanted to do during training. As she says, when it comes to crimes involving children – children are always going to be the victims, and she wants to help give them a voice. She cites the hard work of a multidisciplinary team of experts, agencies and organizations that make this possible. Kristen explains what constitutes child abuse, the calls she has responded to and the cases she has handled as well as the importance of weighing all the variables when determining if an incident was a crime, an accident, or just bad parenting. Kristen shares the emotional toll this work can take and why wellness matters — a topic that connects to Ep. 77 in which I interviewed her husband, Dallas Police Officer Joe King, head of the department's wellness unit and host of the podcast ATO: Bridging the Divide.A big part of Kristen's passion is educating families on various topics to keep their kids safe. For example, why teaching “Stranger Danger” falls short because most assaults on children are committed by someone known to the child. She talks about what parents should teach their kids and how to recognize warning signs. We also cover Kristen's efforts to educate families on the importance of properly storing firearms in the home to prevent injuries and fatalities due to a child's access to unsecured weapons which can lead to the charge known as "Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child." And Kristen launched a campaign for which she helped raise funding called “Tiny Breaths Safe Sleep” about safe sleeping habits for babies – life saving tips that many parents may be unaware of.This is a powerful episode on the work being done every day to protect our children.Thank you, Kristen! You can find Kristen on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristen-king10671/Find me on my social or email me your thoughts:Instagram: on_being_a_police_officerFacebook: On Being a Police Officer Abby@Ellsworthproductions.comwww.onbeingapoliceofficer.com©Abby Ellsworth. Ep. 77 - Many of you know Dallas PD's Joe King as the host of the compelling podcast “ATO: Bridging the Divide” which supports the mission of the Assist the Officer Foundation. Joe joined The Dallas Police Department in 1997, starting out in the Southeast Division. We talk about why he chose law enforcement, an early critical incident that sticks with him to this day, and how he quickly was drawn to street level narcotics and gangs which he worked for 20 years. On July 7th, 2016, everything changed for Joe, the Dallas Police Department and Dallas. That night, while DPD was working an anti-police protest, a shooter opened fire on officers working the protest, killing five, injuring nine other officers and two civilians. Those we lost are known as the Dallas Five, and they include one of Joe's close friends, Senior Corporal Lorne Ahrens. Joe recounts how the tragic events of that night unfolded with much of the killing horrifyingly playing out on live television. He details the SWAT response and the hours-long standoff that resulted in the shooter's being neutralized by a bomb on a remote-controlled bomb robot. The shooting was the deadliest incident for US law enforcement since 9/ 11, surpassing the March 2009 shootings of four officers in Oakland, CA, and the November 2009 murders of four officers just south of Seattle in Lakewood, WA known as the Lakewood Four. Their deaths were preceded by the ambush murder of Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton less than a month earlier. I lived in the greater Seattle area at the time and experienced the devastation of this tragedy. When the Dallas Five were killed, as I tell Joe, I may have been thousands of miles away, but my heart was with Dallas.Joe shares the impact on him and his fellow officers. His journey through grief and the cumulative effect of prior traumas led him to seek help through the Assist the Officer Foundation's confidential counseling.Joe has since joined the board of the Foundation which is a non-profit that not only provides trauma support but also financial assistance to first responders in need. Joe amplifies the mission with the “ATO: Bridging the Divide” podcast for which he interviews first responders from Dallas and around the country. They share their stories of trauma and resilience and how their agencies handle wellness.Joe also helped create and serves on Dallas PD's Wellness Unit which takes a very proactive role in caring for Dallas police officers. That Unit and ATO were both put to the test following the 2024 ambush murder of Officer Darron Burks who, only a few months out of the Academy, was shot and killed while in his patrol car. Joe says, “the Wellness Unit snapped into action that night. It was really a night-and-day response from 2016 to 2024 with critical incident response.”Thank you, Joe for all you have done and for all you do.I'd like to honor The Dallas Five for their service and for paying the ultimate sacrifice to protect the rest of us:Senior Corporal Lorne AhrensOfficer Patricio Enrique ZamarripaOfficer Michael Leslie KrolSgt. In this episode, host Conrad Weaver has a conversation with Joe King, a 28-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department and one of the driving forces behind their Officer Wellness & Longevity Unit (OWL). Joe opens up about the trauma he experienced during the 2016 Dallas ambush that killed five officers, and how that tragedy became the turning point for his personal journey—and a catalyst for systemic change. Joe shares the inside story of how Dallas PD shifted from a reactive, check-the-box approach to mental health to a proactive, peer-led model that's changing lives and careers. From reshaping the stigma around seeking help to launching a bold new alcohol policy and leading a widely respected podcast (ATO Bridging the Divide), Joe speaks candidly about what it really takes to protect the people who protect others. Among the topics covered: LETTERS! Yep. Letters. Over the past 5-plus years on this program, we have read and discussed a multitude of Historical Letters, including letters from witnesses, investigators, suspects, relatives-of-suspects, acquaintances-of-suspects, researchers (both to-and-from other researchers), cops, mob guys, you name it. Be they interesting, weird, intriguing, or just plain kooky. We're going to share even more fascinating letters culled from the Declassified JFK Files with you in this installment, from a Brazillian Doctor in 1964 who (obviously) followed the case very closely and fingered the Dallas PD in a manner that can only be described as "clairvoyant", to an explosive letter sent to Jack Ruby after Oswald's death. A letter from a 22-year old Hungarian man who spent part of his adolescence in New York City. "...Harvey...is that you...?" JOIN US! Written & Hosted by Rob Clark & Doug Campbell. Igo read from a prepared statement at Dallas police headquarters “the Dallas Police Department continues to fulfill all of its duties and obligations to enforce state and local laws — while protecting the constitutional rights of all people.” In other news,Texas might have a personal debt problem. Four of the state's metro areas — Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio — are among the most debt-ridden in the country, according to a report by Lending Tree; Keller schools trustees finalized Superintendent Tracy Johnson's exit Thursday — a month after she spoke out against a proposal to split the district in two. At a special meeting, trustees voted 6-0 to accept her resignation with one board member absent; and eager to reverse a string of defeats at the Texas Legislature, pro-gambling forces are bringing a new attitude — and a pared-down vision — to the goal of allowing state-sanctioned casinos and sports betting in Texas. Welcome back ATO Family We finally get to discuss an integral function in law enforcement and the criminal justice system, the Crime Scene Response Unit. Today's guest has a Master's degree in Forensic Science, currently working on Doctorate, and is a dedicated member of the Dallas Police Department's Crime Scene Unit. It is up to the trained crime scene investigator to take advantage of every scientific and technological development in forensic investigation in order to correctly analyze, retrieve and collect evidence from the scene of any crime. Crime scene analysis combines the human factor with scientific procedures and methods to interpret what has occurred. While the scientific evidence may speak for itself, it requires human understanding and voices to translate that evidence into a court of law in order to ensure that justice is always served. Today we are sitting down with one of Dallas Pd's Forensic specialists and someone who supervises our great Crime Scene Response Unit. She will walk us through their functions and shed some light on some of the facts vs myths of the job……..and we will also show how vital this unit is to investigations and prosecutions… Courtney Lozano welcome to the ATO stage….. “Act Outside the Box” Welcome back ATO Family Today we welcome the Boss of Dallas PD back to the mic as we talk about the Dallas Police Department's mission in making mental wellness a priority. Over the last couple of months Dallas has endured tragedies with officers taking their own life as well as losing officers to medical emergencies. Chief Eddie Garcia is here to talk about making his employee's health a priority and is dedicated to establishing a culture to come forward and get help more importantly, trust in the system. The first responder's world has long stigmas in Officers seeking help. We are very good at saving people but often do not make our own mental health a priority. Our mission is daunting, and change is intimidating but with a leader like Chief Garcia at our helm we have HOPE in changing a culture for generations of Dallas Police Officers. You are NOT ALONE! If you would like to see our policies for the Dallas Wellness unit, email us at ATOBridging@GMAIL.COM
