That is the key topic on this week's episode of the Tim May Podcast as Lettermen Row's Tim May is joined by Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward to break down the Buckeyes. Ryan Day's offense has been humming now for the past three seasons under his direction as head coach, but the Buckeyes defense during those three campaigns has been up and down. Ohio State had one of the best defensive units in the country in 2019, but that unit severely underwhelmed in 2020 and 2021. So, Day and the Buckeyes went back to the drawing board this offseason. They have already made significant staffing changes and personnel decisions with the addition of transfer defensive back Tanner McCalister and running back-who-will-be-turned-linebacker DeaMonte Trayanum. Will those changes and decisions lead to significant improvement for the defense? That is what Tim and Austin aim to project as we head toward winter workouts for Ohio State. In addition to the defensive tackle, Tim is also joined on the show by former Buckeyes linebacker Matt Wilhelm. #OhioStateFootball #OhioState #CFBNews Subscribe for more Ohio State Football coverage: https://www.youtube.com/c/Lettermenrow?sub_confirmation=1 Ohio State Buckeyes videos from Columbus, Ohio from the staff of Lettermen Row. Just a couple weeks removed from the Ohio State win over Utah, Ballard has been called on by Lettermen Row's Tim May as a special guest for this week's episode of the Tim May Podcast. Ballard was not just a pivotal force for the Buckeyes first Rose Bowl win since 1997 during that 2010 victory. He eventually would go on to have a four-year career in the NFL, highlighted by winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2011. Ballard is an expert voice and analyst who knows the ins and outs of the game in addition to background in the infrastructure of a college football program. So he gives some valuable insight in this week's podcast episode as Ohio State is now in the midst of a crucial offseason for Buckeyes coach Ryan Day and his program. That offseason has already been a busy one with several new defensive coaching hires, including the hiring of Tim Walton as cornerbacks coach and Perry Eliano as safeties coach for Ohio State. Those two will play a big role in the attempt to turn around the Buckeyes defense following poor season-long performances in both 2020 and 2021. Tim is also joined on the show by Lettermen Row's Austin Ward to discuss those new hires and to break down more Buckeyes news, analysis and offseason discussions in another jam-packed edition of the Tim May Podcast. On the latest episode of the Tim May Podcast, Lettermen Row's Tim May and Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward take a dive into the latest Ohio State coaching moves and give a breakdown of the coaching carousel around the entire landscape of college football. While head coach Ryan Day is firmly solidified as the Buckeyes leader, he has already shifted things around and made major infrastructure changes in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. First, Day landed Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator with a hefty contract worth a little less than $2 million per year. Knowles began his Ohio State coaching career officially last Sunday on January 2. Matt Barnes then left his position with Ohio State to take over as Memphis' defensive coordinator. And the Buckeyes parted ways with offensive line coach Greg Studrawa last week and hired Justin Frye on Monday to the same position, bringing Frye over from his offensive line coach position on the west coast at UCLA. That Frye hiring came after Ohio State receivers coach Brian Hartline was given a promotion and given status as the Buckeyes pass game coordinator. How do those coaching moves affect Ohio State? What sort of messages is Day sending heading into his fourth season at the helm of the Buckeyes? And what other moves are still on the horizon during what has already been a wild offseason? All of that Buckeyes news, analysis and offseason predictions are packed into this loaded edition of the Tim May Podcast, full of key storylines and talking points as Ohio State kicks off the most critical offseason yet under Day. The Buckeyes are in rivalry mode, turning their full focus to The Game as they prepare to head north for a road trip to Ann Arbor for another top-10 matchup against Michigan. Tim May has been around the rivalry for years. He knows a thing or two about the annual Ohio State game with Michigan. And the Tim May Podcast is back for a special edition to break down every aspect of The Game. This loaded episode features an interview with John U. Bacon, a football historian who focuses on Michigan and the Wolverines entire program. Ohio State may have righted the ship with its big win over Akron on Saturday night. It won't take long for the Buckeyes to see if the improvements are enough. Big Ten play returns this weekend for the Buckeyes as they travel to the east coast to face Rutgers at 3:30 p.m. in New Jersey. And Tim May returns for another edition of the Tim May Podcast to break down the Buckeyes. Tim is joined by Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward to analyze a Buckeyes defense centered around budding young talent that was flying around on Saturday night and making plays, some of which weren't made earlier in the season. They go through a detailed look at the Buckeyes offense and how Kyle McCord may or may not have put himself into the middle of the Ohio State starting quarterback moving forward. And they also touch on the K'Vaughan Pope sideline outburst and subsequent dismissal from the football program. Tim also made sure to get a defensive breakdown from national-title winning Ohio State linebacker Matt Wilhelm, who played for the Buckeyes from 1999-2002. Wilhelm and May dive into what went wrong on defense early in the season, what has improved and what needs to be done to take the next big steps. Ohio State got back in the win column, but the Buckeyes win over Tulsa was not pretty. Some defensive identity issues continue to be a problem, and the offense hasn't looked as sharp outside of a record-breaking performance from Buckeyes star running back TreVeyon Henderson. Still, a win is a win, and Ohio State now holds a 2-1 record as it looks to continue improving in several areas with Akron on the horizon Saturday and Big Ten play set to resume next week. To break all of it down – the Buckeyes first three games of the season and where they can go from here – Lettermen Row's Tim May welcomes in special guest Bryant Browning on this week's episode of the Tim May Podcast. On this week's episode of the Tim May Podcast, Tim and Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward dive into the Buckeyes loss, and Tim is joined by Marlon Kerner, a first-time guest of the podcast. Kerner was a three-year Ohio State defensive back who played in more than 30 games for the Buckeyes in the 1990s. He was drafted in the third round of the 1995 NFL draft by Buffalo and saw some time as a starting cornerback for the Bills. Kerner is well-versed in his knowledge of the game on the field and knowing what makes players tick off of it. For this week's episode, Tim asked Kerner to do a detailed review of the Ohio State defense against Oregon. The former Buckeye diagnoses the issues that need to be addressed, potential solutions for Ohio State moving forward and how the Buckeyes can get back on track with all of their preseason goals still ahead of them. Do drastic schematic changes need to be made? Or is a personnel shift the most logical move two weeks into the season? Find out those answers and plenty more on this episode of the Tim May Podcast as Tim, Austin and Marlon break it all down. #OhioStateFootball Follow Lettermen Row here: Website: https://lettermenrow.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/LettermenRow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LettermenRow/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lettermenrow/ Learn more about your ad choices. Tim welcomes on his co-pilot, Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward, on the show to break down the latest they are hearing from Ohio State training camp as it enters a pivotal week. The Buckeyes held a massive scrimmage Saturday, and the fallout from it will have implications on how the Big Ten's best program heads into the regular season. Tim and Austin dive into the quarterback competition that appears to be winding down. Second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud seems to be taking the lead in the battle, but Kyle McCord and Jack Miller are still trying to make up ground. Oh, and the No. 1 overall player in the 2021 class, Texas native Quinn Ewers, just arrived on campus over the weekend to make the quarterback room even more stocked with intrigue. After back-to-back weeks of getting a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Ohio State five-star quarterbacks C.J. Stroud and Quinn Ewers, Lettermen Row's Tim May returns with another deep dive this week. On this week's edition of the Tim May Podcast, Tim shifts his focus to women making the climb up the athletic ranks, including Diana Sabau, the Big Ten Conference's deputy commissioner and chiefs sports officer. Prior to her role in the Big Ten conference, Sabau was a staff member in the Ohio State athletic department for 27 years. That included serving as deputy athletic director from 2017-2021 as the sports department's second-highest ranked administrator behind Gene Smith. She then left her role at Ohio State to oversee all 28 of the Big Ten's sponsored sports as the league's first-ever chief sports officer. Sabau joins Tim on the podcast to discuss her extensive role that she began in March 2021. She discusses how she hopes to help the Big Ten grow, her vision for the league's sports over the next several years and how her time at Ohio State helped prepare her. Sabau is one of the most successful administrators in the history of Ohio State athletics. She helped oversee the Buckeyes growth in partnerships with companies such as Nike, Gatorade, CBS and the Big Ten Network. Throughout those many years, Sabau learned several important lessons along the way, and she has become an inspiration to many women who are hoping to break through in the sports administration business and excel in their career. What advice does Sabau have for those hoping to follow a similar career path as her? What goals does she have for the Big Ten Conference in the 2020s? Find out on this edition of the Tim May Podcast.
