For too long the voices of Christians have tried to silent the LGBTQ+ community. But what happens to their voices when Christian music artists sing the Lords praise, and those performers happen to be members of the LGBTQ+ community? Do they abandon them? Call them fake Christians? Film producer Ry Levey brings his newest documentary to life - Song Silenced - where he explores the intersectionality of Christian Musician and the LGBTQ+ performer. In this episode you'll Discover how quasi-Christians treat LGBTQ+ Christian Musicians Unlock power of what it takes to be Christian and LGBTQ+ Learn why these types of documentaries are so important in our current social climate About Ry Levey Ry knows that music is a vital expression for many people, and a powerful part of the faith community—it's a form of celebration of that belief. But what happens when your voice is silenced, for living your truth? In his new documentary, SONG SILENCED: COMING OUT IN CHRISTIAN MUSIC, Ry features beloved classic and current music artists and personalities like Marsha Stevens, Ray Boltz, Flamy Grant, Semler, Billy Newton-Davis, Jess Grace Garcia, Azariah Southworth, Rev. Diedre Gray, Jason & deMarco, Ricky Braddy, Trey Pearson, Derek Webb, Deacon Ross Murray and Ronté Pierce. The documentary tells the stories of faith-based music professionals, who took a great risk in coming out of the closet and faced silencing, and "Out" artists in the space, who share their message of love, faith, and inclusion far and wide, on a mission of equality and for the right to be who you are without sacrifice or silence. Ry is an Award-winning director of OUT IN THE RING. Support the film if you feel compelled Song Silenced Website

One of the harsh realities of parenting is that in order to teach our children about love, sometimes we have to tell them about hate. This is the truth in confronting homophobia in the world. I have on my show today, Susan Cottrell, author and speaker who works with parents of faith who are raising LGBTQ children, and Trey Pearson, the Christian singer/songwriter who came out as gay publicly a few years ago. We talk about the impact of raising children in homophobic environments, how that impacts both gay and straight kids, as well as how faith spaces have gotten quieter with their homophobia but persists with that messaging in subtler ways. This is probably one of my favorite episodes of my podcast mostly because both Trey and Susan are both so genuine and warm. I appreciate their vulnerability in sharing their life and work, and for their passion to help other parents be loving and affirming. This conversation is a gift, and I’m so grateful for both Trey and Susan for having it with me. Trey Pearson, 35, a married father of two and Christian lead singer of alternative rock band Everyday Sunday, came out to the world as gay Tuesday, and says his band will headline the Columbus Pride Parade in Ohio this month. To make an extremely long story short, I have come to be able to admit to myself, and to my family, that I am gay," Pearson reportedly wrote in a letter to those closest to him that was shared with 614 Columbus. In this episode Troy will deal with the poison, how it impacts individuals. The population, how it impacts Society the punishment, what does the Lord say, and the promise for homosexual.

Wild Goose 2014 was a seriously wet podcast. Despite the rain we had a blast thanks to Phillips Theological Seminary who sponsored the beer steins for brews & John Vest who smoked some yummy BBQ pork. This is just a 55 minute sample of the 2 hours of excitement. Tripp, Amy, Micky, & Christian spend some talking with Everyday Sunday's Trey Pearson. Last year at the Goose he not only visited the podcast but began his year long conversation with Tripp & Christian about progressive Christianity. While he definitely resonates with a lot of it he has some lingering questions hours of podcast listening has not cleared up. So hear comes Amy and Micky to the rescue. Hopefully they will be able to lure Trey over to team awesome. You shall see. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Jonnie, Tony Jones & I were lucky to bring the Homebrewed Christianity heat LIVE at the Progressive Youth Ministry conference. This episode includes some of the excitement that was had. It kicks off with a tasty interview with DePaul professor of religion, theo-blogger & Moltmaniac Scott Paeth. We discuss his new book (which is awesome and easy to read) The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, the Hauerwasian Mafia, and the future of progressive Christian ethics in America. Then Tony Jones and I had a serious battle of au contraire mon fraire... Tony Jones did not win. That was great BUT... little did we anticipate Jonnie would secretly orchestrate his victory with a statement that blew our mind. If that wasn't enough we had Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday & Carter DJ-ing the show & post-pod dance party...oh yeah that happened... Our wonderful host 4th Presbyterian & John Vest were amazing & even arranged to have some delicious Revolution Brewing & Goose Island beer at the celebration. Chalice, the TNT publishing partner, also did some awesome give-away fun at the event. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community.
