McCallie School's annual Christmas musical performance known as Candlelight will celebrate its 40th year on the Ridge on Dec. 6 and 7, 2024. In this episode of Stories from the Ridge, Dr. James Harr, Director of Choral Programs and Director of Candlelight, sits down with Dr. Lew Cisto, retired Music Director who started Candlelight in 1985 when he first arrived on campus to teach music, and with Ben Sanders '99, who performed in six Candlelights, to discuss the history of Candlelight, reflect on its importance in the culture and traditions of McCallie, and share a lot of heartwarming stories. Hank Hopping, Principal of the Upper School, hosts the three in this uplifting conversation about Candlelight.

As Rivalry Week – the week of the annual football game between McCallie and crosstown rival Baylor School – got underway for 2024, Head of School Lee Burns '87 sat down on Sept. 30 in the podcast studio with new Head Coach Joel Bradford '07 to discuss the week and the upcoming game. The two not only discuss Coach Bradford's coaching philosophy, but talk about how the hype and buildup over the week affects the players and coaches and inspires them to be at their best on game day.

One of the most pressing and vexing issues facing McCallie administrators – and administrators of all schools – is the question of the usage and role of smart phones among students. In this episode of Stories from the Ridge, Head of School Lee Burns is joined by Upper School Principal Hank Hopping and Middle School Principal Scotty Jones as they discuss this challenging issue. They share personal and professional insights as well as discuss some ideas that McCallie administrators are considering for the spring 2025 semester.

While the attention of the nation and the world is turning to Paris and the 2024 Olympics, we step back in time for some Gold Medal winning stories of the 1996 Olympics which were held in Atlanta, just down the road from McCallie's Chattanooga campus. In this episode of Stories From the Ridge, Charles Battle '60 shares insider stories – and some long-held secrets – about his critical role in Atlanta's bid for the Olympics and the ensuing successful games, which placed Atlanta on the map as a leading international city. Charles' tells stories about how he, as a member of the famous Atlanta Nine who led the Olympic effort, traveled around the world, meeting royalty and world leaders, befriending them, and gaining their votes for Atlanta . . . and later more wonderful stories about how the games were carried out so successfully. It's all about making friends and being a friend, he says. We encourage you to listen all the way to the end to hear Charles read a poem from one of his 1960 McCallie classmates.

History was brought to life this spring when McCallie sixth graders participated in the school's first “Human Library” day. The brainchild of Middle School English teacher Weesie Cook and Middle School Learning Center Director Kelcey Watson, the “Human Library” brought community leaders in medicine, education, law, and race relations to campus to share their life stories with the students. They'll be upgraded to two state-of-the-art casters. The new casters will implement the most modern fuel technology available. “It's breakthrough technology to allow our combustion systems to be fueled by virtually any type of material, including when it becomes affordable and available, hydrogen. It will make us a carbon-free casting environment,” said Brian McCallie, vice president of operations for Constellium. The Ravenswood plant employs 1,100 workers. McCallie said the upgrades would protect the current jobs and that inclusions in the plan will make the operation prime for expansion in the future. The Emmett Till Story Part II: Elder Parker Visits McCallie School The Rev. Wheeler Parker, the last surviving member of the family of Emmett Till, who was with Emmett when he was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, visited McCallie School on March 13, 2024 to share his story as a first-hand witness to history. He came to campus as a guest speaker as part of the Mandela Fellow Endowed Fund, a fund established by alumni to enhance students' understanding of what it means to be an agent of hope, reconciliation, and social justice. In this edition of Stories from the Ridge, the Rev. Troy F. Kemp Sr. is a passionate, award-winning educator, Hall of Fame coach, speaker, and transformational leader. Mr. Kemp was raised as one of 6 children, in a single parent, migrant worker's home in Riverhead, NY. The former collegiate football player's education includes earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Colgate University and a master's degree in independent school leadership from Vanderbilt's Peabody College. Troy's career includes spending 24 years on the faculty at McCallie, an all-boys school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At McCallie, Mr. Kemp served as a teacher, dorm parent and administrator, while coaching his teams to a state championship in football and eight titles in lacrosse. After a year of serving as associate headmaster at McCallie, Troy became the founding executive director of the National Center for the Development of Boys (NCDB). The NCDB was established to improve the lives of boys by providing resources and programs for parents, teachers, mentors and organizations committed to helping with their learning and development as they journey to manhood. In 2019, Troy joined the staff of the Ron Clark Academy (RCA), in South Atlanta. At RCA, Troy serves as the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships and an educator trainer during its professional development events. At RCA, Mr. Kemp continues to provide inspirational keynotes, seminars and professional development for individuals and organizations around the world. The college admissions process is in the midst of perhaps the most profound and impactful series of changes in several decades, and navigating these changes is becoming more challenging for students, parents, and counselors, according to Abbie Roberts, who in August assumed the role of Director of College Counseling at McCallie. McCallie's Theater/Musical program is off to a great start for the 2023-24 school year, with its fallplays in both the Upper School and Middle School attracting record numbers of participants and stand-room-only crowds.
