On this edition of Parallax Views, we continue our post-mortem of the 2024 election with two separate and distinguished guests. In the first segment, Stephen Semler of the date-based political blog Polygraph joins the show to discuss his articles "A couple charts to explain a Harris loss" and the facetiously titled "'The economy is fine'". Stephen delves into how the economy played a role in this election, and addresses criticisms by some pundits that economic anxieties could not have played a role in the election because the economy is doing well by some metrics and statistics (for example: low unemployment, a booming stock market, etc.). We'll delve into the difference between the economy and average American's economic well-being, and we'll look at two graphs from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Census Bureau that deal with food insecurity and poverty to further elucidate Stephen's analysis. We'll also delve into Biden's Build Back Better and American Rescue Plans and how certain elements of Bidenomics in spring of 2022 got sidelined in a way that may have led to economic whiplash for American voters. In the second segment of the show, Daniel Bessner, known for his work at the Quincy Institute and Jacobin as well as co-hosting the left-leaning foreign policy/international relations podcast American Prestige, returns to the program to give his own analysis of the 2024 election's outcome and what he expects from a 2nd Trump Presidency. We'll discuss the feeling that there's been a more muted response to this election that in 2016, the question of Trump and fascism and why Danny prefers to discuss Trump as a reactionary populist with authoritarian inclinations, Trump as a PT Barnum-esque carny barker character mixed with shades of Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall, Trump and his promises of mass deportation, what Trump means for climate change, populism and anti-establishment backlash in the 2024 election, what Danny expects out of Trump's foreign policy (with regards to Ukraine and Russia, China, Iran, and Israel/Palestine), and, most significantly, the crisis of liberalism. In regard to the crisis of liberalism we'll mention Francis Fukuyama's "End of History" hypothesis, the decline of civic institutions since the 1960s (and maybe even before), Clinton-era liberalism (colored by the primacy of Third Way neoliberalism in the Democratic Party) vs. FDR's New Deal liberalism, the liberal international order and great power politics, and much, much more.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Stephen Semler of the Security Reform Policy Institute joins us to discuss the Biden administration and the Pentagon's $280 million Gaza floating aid pier boondoggle that promised to get much needed humanitarian aid to Gazans who are now facing hunger/starvation during the Israeli bombardment. The pier became operational in May but was shut down this month, July, in what appears to have been a massive waste of time and resources that didn't even help the Palestinians of Gaza. Stephen, it turns out, was warning about the Gaza pier in Responsible Statecraft back in June when he wrote the article "Washington is not telling truth about the Gaza pier". Friend of the show and multi-time guest Kelley Vlahos also warned of the piers problems alongside others. There were logistical issues amongst much else that was criticized. We'll dive into what happened with the Gaza pier as well as discussing PR stunts and "Humanitarian Theater" being played out during the Gaza war, hunger/starvation in Gaza, the U.S. ignoring Human Rights Watch reports when it comes to the Gaza war but not the Russo-Ukraine war, Palestinian American congresswoman Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Congress, potential Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Gov. Josh Shapiro and his reaction to pro-Palestinian protests, free speech and crackdowns on protesters, Donald Trump and the American right-wing's hawkishness on China, thoughts on Kamala Harris as it relates to U.S. policy on Israel/Palestine, families of hostages being held by Hamas protesting Netanyahu's visit to Congress, Palestinians being held in Israeli administrative detention, and much, much more!

In this episode of the Connected Leadership Gold series, Andy Lopata discusses the critical topic of overwhelm and burnout in today's fast-paced world. Joined by esteemed guests Dr. Katherine Semler and Dr. Amy Bradley, authors of the book "Running on Empty," the conversation explores the profound impact of excessive workload on individuals and organisations. Dr. Amy Bradley reflects on a pivotal moment during the COVID-19 pandemic when she recognised she was overwhelmed, noting similar patterns among peers. Dr. Katherine Semler highlights challenges in balancing well-being amid demanding work environments. Andy, Amy and Katherine discuss the role of technology, particularly the ubiquitous use of platforms like Zoom, which has led to the phenomenon of "Zoom fatigue." Andy underscores the importance of reevaluating scheduling practices to prevent back-to-back meetings and allow for essential breaks between engagements. There is a need for proactive measures to address burnout, both at an individual and an organisational level. The discussion progresses to advocate for open dialogue and supportive environments, where individuals feel empowered to prioritise self-care and seek assistance when needed. Additionally, the significance of tailored approaches is stressed, recognising that what may be restorative for one person could be overwhelming for another. Andy, with Dr. Katherine Semler and Dr. Amy Bradley, explores the complexities of burnout and overwhelm in various cultural and organisational contexts. Dr. Bradley highlights the importance of language and intentionality in addressing burnout, emphasising the need for genuine empathy and listening without judgment. Dr. Semler adds to the conversation by discussing the impact of toxic cultures on burnout, noting the extremes of either stigmatising or glorifying burnout within organisations. She emphasises the role of leadership in fostering a culture of support and openness, where emotional and practical support are prioritised and relationships are built on trust and reciprocity. The discussion also touches upon gender, ethnicity, and cultural differences in experiencing burnout, with Dr. Semler highlighting the added pressures faced by women, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Bradley emphasises the link between perfectionism and burnout, noting that individuals with perfectionist tendencies may be more susceptible to exhaustion. Overall, the interview emphasises the collective responsibility of individuals, families, communities, organisations, and societies in addressing burnout and reshaping the way work is approached to prevent its detrimental effects. The episode highlights the importance of fostering a culture of empathy, communication, and mutual support. By recognising the warning signs of burnout and taking proactive steps to address them, individuals and organisations can work towards creating healthier, more sustainable work environments. The Earnings Call held on March 21, 2024, gave Xos stakeholders an authentic overview of the company's performance and strategic moves to date. CEO Dakota Semler announced: "On today's call, I will cover highlights from 2023 during which we generated revenues of $44.5 million, delivered 283 units and achieved positive gross margins in both the third and fourth quarters. I will discuss our anticipated acquisition of ElectraMeccanica and the outlook for 2024." This view from the helm lays evidence to consistent growth and paints a picture of robust financial health. Xos has substantiated its growth trajectory with reported revenues of $44.5 million and the delivery of 283 units in 2023. Coupled with the significant reduction in operating costs by 43% since 2021, Xos's astute operational strategy and controlled cost management is evident. The imminent acquisition of ElectraMeccanica is expected to restrengthen Xos's financial foothold, hinting at improved gross margins, and hinting at a path towards positive free cash flow. The introduction of the Stepvan commercial electric vehicle platform is a significant factor for Xos's financial stability. As acknowledged by the company, this new platform has contributed to their financial traction and led the way to positive gross margins. Xos's direct sales approach, strong customer pipeline, and strategic collaborations have assisted the company in broadening its market capture. Xos's diversification is also apparent in the form of the Xos Hub, which provides EV charging infrastructure solutions. Semler noted during the call, "those generally will accrue to those customers that are buying north of 100 units or more so that's what drives most of the variability." This highlights customer demand's impact on financial outcomes, showcasing the company's ability to scale and its customer-centric strategy. The increasing momentum behind the electrification movement aligns with Xos's strengths and not spared by the EV industry's overall positive trend. Two record-breaking quarters regarding revenues during the second half of 2023 demonstrate a strong market demand. The changes in regulations and customer incentives have been leveraged by Xos to tactically drive EV adoption. Looking ahead, Xos's focus in 2024 will be predominantly on the production and delivery of Stepvans. With the anticipated growth in orders and the prevalent EV adoption driven by regulation and incentives, Xos Inc. is aiming for consistent success. However, as with any company, Xos's progress will be subject to market conditions and unforeseen variables, and realized outcomes may deviate from expectations. Upon evaluating the outcomes of Xos Inc.'s earnings call, it is clear that there are positive prospects for the company based on past performance and upcoming plans. But, as always, a dose of critical thought must accompany a forecast of success, considering the unpredictable nature of market variables and the company's own ability to execute its plans. Contributor: Ricky Dhaliwal, MD Educational Pearls: What are DKA and HHS? DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis) and HHS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State) are both acute hyperglycemic states. DKA More common in type 1 diabetes. Triggered by decreased circulating insulin. The body needs energy but cannot use glucose because it can't get it into the cells. This leads to increased metabolism of free fatty acids and the increased production of ketones. The buildup of ketones causes acidosis. The kidneys attempt to compensate for the acidosis by increasing diuresis. These patients present as dry and altered, with sweet-smelling breath and Kussmaul (fast and deep) respirations. HSS More common in type 2 diabetes. In this condition there is still enough circulating insulin to avoid the breakdown of fats for energy but not enough insulin to prevent hyperglycemia. Serum glucose levels are very high – around 600 to 1200 mg/dl. Also presents similarly to DKA with the patient being dry and altered. Important labs to monitor Serum glucose Potassium Phosphorus Magnesium Anion gap (Na - Cl - HCO3) Renal function (Creatinine and BUN) ABG/VBG for pH Urinalysis and urine ketones by dipstick Treatment Identify the cause, i.e. Has the patient stopped taking their insulin? Aggressive hydration with isotonic fluids. Normal Saline (NS) vs Lactated Ringers (LR)? LR might resolve the DKA/HHS faster with less risk of hypernatremia. Should you bolus with insulin? No, just start a drip. 0.1-0.14 units per kg of insulin. Make sure you have your potassium back before starting insulin as the insulin can shift the potassium into the cells and lead to dangerous hypokalemia. Should you treat hyponatremia? Make sure to correct for hyperglycemia before treating. This artificially depresses the sodium. Should you give bicarb? Replace if the pH < 6.9. Otherwise, it won't do anything to help. Don't intubate, if the patient is breathing fast it is because they are compensating for their acidosis. References Andrade-Castellanos, C. A., Colunga-Lozano, L. Isn't it fun to be part of the in-crowd? Where you can connect with people who are of like minds and spirits, where everyone seems to be headed in the same direction? But what if you start having nagging questions as an insider that don't seem to get resolved, and even worse, are met with disdain or fear from other members of your group? This can be a scary place for so many of us. For the purposes of our conversation today–we're talking about when it happens in religious spaces. For years, singer/songwriter Derek Webb was very much on the “inside” of what was happening in Christendom as a top selling, award winning Christian artist, songwriter and worship leader. It took a few disruptions to his own life that sent him down the road to evaluating his faith, his beliefs and how he wanted to move forward with the new information he'd gained. Now, decidedly an “outsider” who tries to still take up space in the Christian zeitgeist to potentially model a different way of living, Derek has gone on to record solo albums and also work with artists that aren't typical to Christian music–like drag queen Flamy Grant—with whom, incidentally, he attended the Gospel Music Dove Awards in 2023 (and who also had a number one Christian song pop up on the charts), with the intention of making people who are Christian and LGBTQ+IA feel less alone. In this episode, Jen and Derek compare their journeys as “peaceful disruptors,” what it cost them and what they gained in the process * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “So now here I am, 20 years [after going solo] and I'm spoiled into thinking that I can write songs about things no one else is writing songs about, and that's kind of my thing now.” - Derek Webb “I'd been so obsessed on thinking about, obsessed on my language about God, that I forgot to apply it to the way I behave in the world, the way I treat other people, which is ethics. And I realized, 'Oh no, how did I miss that?' As I stand before you as the ringing symbol, the clanging gong when I've got all the right words and none of the love, none of the fruit.” - Derek Webb “I had to rebuild at almost 40, I had to rebuild a whole life and reckon with the fallout, at least my part of the responsibility of some real hurt. I caused a lot of people who I love to hurt, the people I love more than anybody in the world. And it humbled me.” - Derek Webb “Flamy Grant and Semler were not the first two queer artists to have number-one albums and singles on the Christian music charts. It has happened so many times over the years, but by people who are closeted and people who live in tremendous fear in that space because they know they will be immediately rejected, excluded, marginalized, out.” - Derek Webb Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Caedmon's Call Aaron Tate's Website Second Baptist Church She Must and Shall Go Free - Album by Derek Webb Essential Records Third Day Jars Of Clay Plumb The Prayer of Jabez Wedding Dress by Derek Webb Grace Point Church The Jesus Hypothesis Boys Will Be Girls Music Video Grace Semler Baldridge Flamy Grant Instagram Drag Queen at Christian Music Awards Sparks Backlash (Newsweek Article) Guest's Links: Derek's Website - https://www.derekwebb.com/home Derek's Facebook - http://facebook.com/derekwebb Derek's Instagram - http://instagram.com/derekwebb Derek's TikTok - http://tiktok.com/@derekwwebb Derek's Twitter - http://twitter.com/derekwebb Derek's YouTube - http://youtube.com/user/derekwebb Derek's Patreon - http://patreon.com/derekwebb Connect with Jen! In this episode, we reflect upon what's happened in the faith/religion/spirituality and deconstruction world in 2023 with our dear friends Briana and Artie (who, along with us, make up the QCF Squad group chat). We talk about the Asbury Revival, the Pope's recent “LGBTQ Blessing” statement, the Ruby Franke case, and the queer Christian music wins (Semler and Flamy Grant making history, hell yeah!). We also discuss the Shiny Happy People Documentary (as well as the two books by Duggar daughters released this year) and the increasing awareness about religious trauma in our culture (more therapists specializing in this is a good thing!). April gives her annual UMC update– lots more congregations are leaving the denomination, but hopefully in 2024 full LGBTQ+ inclusion may be possible. Minnesota's own Zach Piescher & Cole Semler are your 2023 High School Fishing National Champions. Hailing from Cambridge/Isanti fishing team, these two young hammers drove out to the Bass Galaxy Lair to talk everything from fishing & girls, to world culture & philosophy. In this crazy 21st century full of young heathens, I have to admit, these two anglers give me hope for this generation. Thanks for making the trip gentlemen! Enjoy.
Award-winning and Billboard-charting artist Flamy Grant is a shame-slaying, hip-swaying, singing-songwriting drag queen from western North Carolina. Her 2022 debut record, Bible Belt Baby, was nominated for Best Pop Album at the San Diego Music Awards, and she is a winner of the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition. Both a powerhouse vocalist and an intrepid songwriter, Flamy blends the art of drag with her iconic folk/rock sound to create a memorable musical experience. Flamy is the first drag performer to appear on Christian music charts, with both her song “Good Day” and her Album Bible Belt Baby reaching #1 on iTunes — the latter staying at the top for nine consecutive days. Additionally, “Good Day” debuted at #20 on Billboard's Christian digital sales chart. Flamy has collaborated with Adeem the Artist, Jennifer Knapp, Semler, and Derek Webb. In addition to playing the New Folk winner's showcase at the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival, she has played Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina, San Diego Pride's SheFest, and is headlining Blount County Pride in East Tennessee this September. It's no accident that Flamy's drag name is an homage to Amy Grant, the undisputed queen of Christian music and 90s chart-topping pop artist. Much of Flamy's music centers on the queer spiritual journey, telling stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are frequently ignored by, harmed in, or ejected from religious spaces. With a bold lip, a big lash, and a blistering voice, Flamy drags audiences to a soulful, uplifting church of her own making. Xos' mission is to decarbonize commercial transportation with the most durable trucking technology available. Dakota has been in the transportation and trucking industry for more than a decade and grew up working on his family's fleet business. Since 2018, Xos has deployed hundreds of its 100% battery-electric vehicles with leading fleets within parcel delivery, cash-in-transit, beverage distribution, and linen and textile services. Dakota was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Manufacturing & Industry In 2019. About Xos: Xos is a leading manufacturer of fully electric, zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, powertrain components, and charging infrastructure. The company was founded in 2016 by Dakota Semler and Giordano Sordoni, two former fleet owners and operators, who sought to build an electric vehicle to solve the issues they were facing first-hand around increasing emissions regulations and the rising costs of maintenance and diesel. Xos' mission is to decarbonize commercial transportation and facilitate a seamless transition for fleet owners from traditional internal combustion engines to fully-electric vehicles. Its proprietary battery system, the X-Pack, and modular chassis, the X-Platform, are purpose-built for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles in the last-mile sector. Notable customers include FedEx ISPs, Loomis, UniFirst, and Wiggins Lift Co. to name a few. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles, where its battery packs are built in-house, and has additional manufacturing facilities in Tennessee and Mexico, with more to come in the near future.
