As gay parents, we educate our kids on diversity by showing them that there are many different people in the world, and many types of families. But when is the right time to also teach them that there are people in the world who treat each other poorly just because of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation? How do we as gay dads (and allies) raise children who will fix the world? The Pride 2020 episode, on race and human rights, is now available. Pride 2020 was supposed to be swallowed by the coronavirus pandemic, but then came a Black Lives Matter civil rights revolution which got us all out of our homes and our closets and into the streets with our very old quest for true civil rights equality. Recovery is not always a straight path. Spiritual growth is a spiral touching into our spiritual core and then reaching out into our human experience, always bringing the two together. Our higher power keeps us growing—we just need to stay willing and open. Special guest Rev. Paul Fitzsimons, a person in long-term recovery, shares how his life quest for spiritual fulfillment led to recovery and a life of spiritual service. Paul is the recently ordained spiritual leader of Unity Fellowship Church in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is a retired U.S. Army civilian, having returned to work for the Army in training and audiovisual engineering following 9/11.
Kevin E. Taylor is the kind of guest that inspires me to continue to do this show. He is, in many ways, a prototype for the kind of person I love to connect with for these podcasts. He is the quintessential eccentric, highly accomplished and continuously expanding in several creative arenas. Author, talk show host, music show creator and entertainment producer are a few of the titles he holds. He’s the conscious, spiritual journeyman known for his civil rights activism, community organizing and stirring of souls as the founding pastor of Unity Fellowship Church, a love centered, LGBT friendly, non-denominational house of faith in Newark, New Jersey. Additionally, he is the man who quietly spearheaded some of your all-time favorite music shows on the BET network: “Access Granted”, “Testimony” and “Lyrically Speaking” respectively. He is also the man who, by divine intervention, did not take that last flight with the late great R&B legend Aaliyah. He lived instead to bring the moments he’d captured, her very last moments, to a saddened and waiting world. Then eighteen days later on September 11th, he cheated death once more by not boarding his originally scheduled flight to Los Angeles from New York. Again, he lived. Delivered by the “favor of God” he knows he is here for a reason. His is a fantastic life full of ebbs and flows, great joy, great pain, evolution, testimony, truth, humor and most importantly…divine purpose. There is so much more I could tell you, and I will. Just sit back and listen. Ladies and gentleman, meet Kevin E. Taylor. The wines: Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi (White Zinfandel) Primal Roots-- California Red Blend

Archbishop Carl Bean is the founding prelate of the Unity Fellowship Church Movement, a liberal protestant denomination that has been particularly welcoming of LGBTQ African Americans. Before founding the first church of the denomination, the Unity Fellowship Church, Los Angeles in 1975, Bean was a Motown and disco singer, noted particularly for his version of the early gay liberation song, "I Was Born This Way." In 1982, the Archbishop became an activist working on behalf of people with AIDS and has done great works in this area! His autobiography, "I Was Born This Way" came out in 2010.
One of the highlights of Wild Goose Festival 2013 was a panel discussion organized by the Human Rights Campaign and hosted by Dr. Sharon Groves, the director of HRC's Religion and Faith Program. In Groves words, "2013 will go down in the history books as one of the most pivotal years for religious leaders working on justice issues. People of faith in unprecedented numbers were instrumental in bringing about the tremendous gains the LGBTQ community has enjoyed, culminating in the Supreme Court decision to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). People of faith also saw the gut-wrenching losses to sacred Civil Rights legislation, most particularly in the Supreme Court's other decision to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, for which many have given their lives. The effects of these two decisions rest heavily on our collective conscience and forces us to recommit to Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin's core organizing tenet that 'we are all one.'" Sub-titled "Southern Faith Leaders Re-framing the Work for Freedom and Justice," the panel included Caitlin Breedlove, co-director of Southerners On New Ground (SONG); Bishop Tonyia M. Rawls, founding pastor of Unity Fellowship Church in Charlotte, NC; and Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, Senior Pastor of the Clinton Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Hickory, NC.
