Gladys Bentley was a Harlem Renaissance trailblazer, unapologetic performer, and one of the first public figures to challenge gender norms in 20th-century America. With her signature tuxedo, top hat, and booming voice, Bentley captivated crowds at speakeasies and underground clubs, belting blues lyrics that were as bold as her presence. But behind the spotlight was a woman navigating the complex intersections of race, sexuality, fame, and personal identity in a deeply conservative era. From her rise to fame at the legendary Clam House to the pressures that led her to publicly renounce her queerness during the McCarthy era, Bentley's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and radical self-expression. This week Paris is chatting to the US based musician Caroline Rose. Caroline Rose is an artist that has been patiently and effectively building a name for herself over the last few years, gaining increasing levels of acclaim with a steady stream of alternative pop bangers. Her latest full length offering Superstar is more of the same, and looks set to make Caroline just that. The artists latest full length is packed with substance, style, and infectious hooks that will sit with you indefinitely. A fitting embodiment of a career that has pitted Caroline Rose as an unapologetic, unfiltered anti-hero, and a great one at that. Paris said ... " Growing up, I struggled with parent abandonment and gender identity issues, so I turned to music as a form of escape. Music was a saviour for me in healing trauma. On my new podcast, I want to show you another side to artists that you've never heard before. So I'm curious to know how upcoming artists, to some of the biggest names in pop realised that music was their safety blanket too. I'm taking a deeper look so I can really understand the person behind the songs". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/outcastuk/message

I learned a lot from my recent interview with Vanessa Racci, the 38-year-old jazz and cabaret singer who nearly gave up her dream of becoming a performer because her traditional family wanted her to pursue a more “stable career.” She tried, but didn't listen, and instead listened to her inner voice to perform. Vanessa was influenced at a young age by legendary performers Dean Martin, Connie Francis, and Frank Sinatra when her Italian grandfather played their music around the house. And that's when she got the bug to perform. But she held off for a while, working 9-5 in the corporate world, until one day she decides to hit the road, and she's never looked back. This is the story of a young woman who wouldn't give up on her dreams, and is now living her dream. Here's a clip from our show with Vanessa, and you'll find our full interview on #DeborahKobyltLIVE, #LittleItalyPodcast and #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast on all video and audio platforms. We invite you to join us, and please share with your friends, too. And thanks for tuning in. We appreciate your support #DeborahZaraKobylt

In this episode, had a chance to speak with Maine singer and songwriter Laurie Jones. We talked about her new album, Dark Horse, how the recording process and songwriting was different from her other albums, how Maine influences her as a musician, badass women, inspiration, and more! ABOUT OUR GUEST: Laurie Jones is an American Singer/songwriter that had been dubbed “the missing link between Dusty Springfield and Tom Petty. She has been referred to as “Chrissie Hynde with a folk guitar” and compared to Lucinda Williams and Sheryl Crow for her Americana and Folk-Rock influences. These comparisons she happily and humbly accepts. Influenced by a multitude of styles from Tom Petty, Suzanne Vega, and Fleetwood Mac, Jones combines the craft of songwriting with her own unique sounds that range from Rock to Gospel. Whether playing her songs acoustic solo, or backed by her rock solid band, Jones delivers the lyrical sass and musical punch she has built her reputation on.
