What happens when the resilience of foster youth meets the power of advocacy? Join us as we engage in a powerful conversation with Tyese Styles, a remarkable entrepreneur and champion for foster youth, who shares her compelling journey from a turbulent childhood to finding stability and purpose. Tyese opens up about her experience of being removed from her home due to abuse at age nine and navigating multiple foster homes, which included facing further mistreatment. Her life took a turn for the better at age 13 when she found a nurturing environment with a foster mother, shining a light on the critical need for compassionate support within the foster care system.  Our discussion extends beyond personal narratives to examine the systemic issues many foster children encounter, particularly focusing on the experiences of Black youth. We highlight the inspiring story of 21 year old Tawanna Brown, whose involvement with the New Jersey Youth Council transformed her life, turning past struggles into a platform for empowerment. Despite the challenges and lack of resources in the child welfare system, the support of dedicated CASA volunteers and her relentless spirit guided her toward becoming a youth council coach. Together, we reflect on the societal changes needed to better support vulnerable children and question the role of various advocates in these efforts. This heartfelt episode is not just about survival but also about healing and finding one's purpose amidst adversity. We explore themes of overcoming trauma, forgiveness, and the enduring strength found in sibling relationships despite separations caused by foster care and adoption. As we recount personal stories, we underscore the importance of therapy, mentorship, and self-care in building resilience and reclaiming one's narrative. From personal reconciliation to professional aspirations, listeners are invited to celebrate the triumphs of those who rise above their circumstances and advocate for systemic change in the foster care landscape.   RATE, REVIEW, AND FOLLOW ON APPLE PODCAST ‌

Episode 75: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome With Guests Dr. Thomas Glenn and Tawanna Nishibayashi In this episode, we discuss hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Dr. Thomas Glenn discussed that the condition is a congenital heart disease where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. Nowadays, a diagnosis is done prenatally, but once kids are born, the diagnosis is confirmed via an echocardiogram. Doctors also test the saturation around the baby’s body before they go home to make sure the baby is ok. If the condition is not diagnosed prenatally, visible symptoms might include blue color to the child, changing breathing pattern, fast breathing, the child having a difficult time breathing, perfusion being different, mottling of extremities, and the child not feeding initially. This is a condition that can only be treated at 10-15 centers around the country, successfully, so it important to catch this condition early. The main treatments are surgery, transplant, or palliative care. The three main surgeries include the Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan. The goal of these surgeries is to get the right side of the heart to do what the left side would have done and then to redirect the blood from the heart to the lungs. During the early periods, these kids are followed every week and have echocardiograms at least once a week. Medications are always needed. Parents need to be careful about the exposure the children have to other people during the interstage phase. Dr. Glenn shared his personal experienced with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Tawanna Nishibayashi’s daughter Avery was also born with that condition. Tawanna shares Avery’s story. Avery had a complex case, fraught with complications, including needing a Berlin heart and a heart transplant with rejection, and injury to other bodily organs.     Some possible complications of the condition and surgery include involvement of the liver, kidney, and needing NG tubes for feeding. There is a possible need for a heart and liver transplant in adulthood. A lot of patients have to deal with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. These children may not grow as fast as their peers and may experience developmental delays. Factors contributing to this is frequent anesthesia, lower saturations, abnormal brain development in utero, and spending a lot of time in the hospital. Tawanna recommends that once you have found out that your child has this condition, take time to process. Begin the morning process early (of a normal pregnancy, baby shower) and the death of normalcy. Process the length of time your child might be in the hospital. Learn the science as much as you can, including treatments, outcomes, mortality, conditions, centers, procedures, surgeons, care teams, follow up, and support. Be an advocate for your child. Develop a relationship with your team. Expect the unexpected and prepare for that as much as you can. Quality of life is also an issue for children, including ICU psychosis, aspiration, feeding troubles, nausea, and trust issues. Moreover, parents often experience PTSD and CPTSD. To prepare the children for medical appointments, cluster care, read books with them about the procedure, watch shows about doctors and shots, have the child hold the stethoscope, get their permission, let them know what to expect, bring their favorite things, and maintain a routine. Be prepared for financial difficulty. Often, one parent is no longer able to work due to helping their child. Sometimes, neither parent can work, in order to care for the child. Treatments, procedures, medical equipment, medications, anything insurance doesn’t cover, outside therapies, hospital stays, home health nurses, parking, food, laundry, and groceries all factor into financial difficulties. For advocacy, use your voice. Ask a lot of questions. Attend all the rounds. Spend a lot of time with your child. Have someone with your child as often as you can. Keep in touch with your support team, even while you are outpatient. Being a medical mom can be very challenging, as it is intensive, time consuming, people might not understand, and you have less time for fun things. Expect the unexpected. Roll with the punches. Other coping strategies include hospital relationships, carving out your own quiet time, having a routine, learning to ask what you need, taking time outside of the hospital and get fresh air, yoga, and music therapy. Tawanna grew up in Dallas, Texas, a Bible Belt part of the United States. She was nourished in social environments where very long marriages were the norm. Many of the couples in her family remained strong and married for years only to be separated by death. This background served as a strong foundation in her life. After college and as fate would have it Tawanna became a wife and mother of three. While married and raising a family she took jobs in the information technology industry and worked as an IT professional for over 20 years. After seeing her youngest off to college she left the IT industry to focus on the completion of her debut, "TRUST, The Novel" trilogy series. Her years of studying the commonalities in various technological behaviors and IT patterns prompted the application of a similar logic in life. Out of curiosity she soon began studying behavioral patterns between people in interpersonal relationships, because...why not? Her discoveries were not at all uncommon. Moreover, and to her surprise, she learned first-hand that there was in-fact one exception to her findings. The one thing which broke archetypes and paradigms and that remained constantly unpredictable was the unmitigated power and mystery found only within the complexities and the freedoms of love. Her stories share uniquely detailed journeys of common joys and failures in personal relationships. She desires to understand the mysteries embedded within the power of love and how that power can be used for positive change. Her goal is to inspire us all to the best possible version of ourselves by helping us to laugh, cry, ponder, and gasp at those crazy experiences we encounter in life. She believes that maybe, just maybe, we'll lighten up if we can see how similar we really are and how often we go through the same things. Tawanna resides in both Texas and California. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Episode 114 Glenn Orms Owner of The Cow Lot / “You can tell by lookin’, it came from the Cow Lot”…

Modern Cowboy

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2020 53:32

I had a great time talking with Glenn Orms owner of "The Cow Lot" & I'm sure you will find the history behind it as amazing I as did. In 1952, Nat Fleming, a young, North Texas Bootmaker, Rodeo Announcer, and entrepreneur, in Wichita Falls, Texas, had a dream.  (https://thecowlot.wpengine.com/)  was where essential work was done on the ranch, where cowboys worked their cattle. Nat dreamed of providing the cowboys who worked there with two must-have tools of their trade, a good hat and a pair of boots that “FIT”. That dream manifested into an all-out Western retail store, the Cow Lot. A 54-year body of work began, dedicated to Service, Quality, Honesty & Integrity…i.e. the Western Way of Life and How You Wear It. To enter the doors of the Cow Lot was to enter Nat’s dream. The scene emulated the American West and its way of doing business. Product quality was second only to the integrity of the personalized service. Each salesperson was an actual cowboy, passionate to serve you, their guest. Whether you were the President of the bank or the bank held the mortgage on your property, you were treated like you were the King of the Cowboys, or the Queen of the Cowgirls, as the case might be. Art was created before your very eyes by one of Nat’s hired cowhands posing as a salesperson. Hats were shaped to best serve your lifestyle and personality. Boots were fitted. Fit was guaranteed. Prices were affordable. Customer satisfaction was the order of the day. Together with his longtime friend Gene O’Brien, and later my father Dewey Orms, they built the Cow Lot into one of the finest Western Stores in North Texas, winning several awards including the Wendy Ryon Western Retailer of the Year. Nat met his life partner and wife, Tawana, at the store when she happened in for a new pair of Levis. The likes of legendary Larry McMurtry, author of Lonesome Dove, whose family ranched in the nearby town of Archer City, Texas, would stop and have a cup of coffee and visit and maybe buy a new pair of boots or a new hat. Nat was a pioneer in TV and Radio. In the early ’50s The Nat Fleming Show was one of the first on local TV providing 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. A big deal then because TV was only on 3 hours a day. He started broadcasting a weekly Saturday morning radio show from the store, The Nat Fleming Horn Honkin’ Show. When he saw a car drive by he would ask, ‘Honk your horn if you are listening .” 90% of the time the driver would honk and wave. The store grew and so did Nat’s inventory. Boot sizes ran from AAA widths to D. Fit was of utmost importance. Nat believed, ‘If you have to have a license to cut hair, you should have to have one to sell shoes.” People came from all over the United States to buy boots that “Fit”, the same was true with hats. Longtime Cow Lot general manager, JR Gahagan, shaped and fit most of the cowboys who were shooting the then popular and now famous Marlboro Man advertisements on a nearby ranch. Growing up in the Cow Lot, I was officially hired on in my Junior year of High School, where my skills in the art of boot fitting and hat shaping were fine-tuned. Just as importantly, I advanced my education in Nat’s University of Down Home Business, majoring in Homespun Philosophy and graduated with degrees in Service, Quality, Honesty & Integrity. After 54 years of service to his customers, Nat closed the doors to the great retail icon of North Texas and retired to work the real Cow Lot at his ranch in Byers, TX, where he was born and raised. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 96 leaving behind his wife Tawanna and his son Marty, who still run their cattle operation. In 2013 I found myself presented with an opportunity to re-open the Cow Lot. With Nat’s blessing, I took on the Cow Lot brand and created a hybrid version….an event based retail  (https://thecowlot.wpengine.com/product-category/twisted-x-shoes/) ....
