His work has been published in the Oklahoma Gazette and the Huffington Post and he was named a Champion of Pride by Advocate Magazine and received the Rising Star Award from the OSU College of Arts and Sciences. We're talking about James' debut novel - Moonlit Massacre - a horror novel about a mass murder following in the vein of the infamous Sirloin Stockade murders in Oklahoma City in the 70s. Over the course of the conversation we also talk about Care Bears, Nightmare on Elm Street, Lil Wayne, jazz, a little OKC politics, and a particular influence that you'll have to hear to believe. In the fifth episode of "Ring the Alarm," a special series in partnership with the Advocate Magazine, award-winning journalist Jasmyne Cannick continues with her exclusive look inside Jamaica, one of the world's most homophobic and transphobic countries. 18-year-old Keneil grew up in Jamaica, where he was sexually abused at home starting at the age of 8 years old. Because of the isolation and denial he faced from his mother, and narrowly escaping a murder attempt, Keneil tried to commit suicide several times. After being disowned by his mother, Keneil lived in abandoned buildings with no food. He recently found housing at the Unity Fellowship Church Jamaica safe house, where he is receiving support and is now awaiting relocation assistance to another county that is more accepting of LGBTQ people. Through it all, the teenager has managed to smile, remain hopeful, and look forward to living a life where he can be free, even if it means being away from his family and the country he is from. Please note that this episode contains depictions of suicide and sexual violence that some people may find disturbing. Mental health advocate Joel Relampagos was born in Manila, Philippines, on January 25, 1982. Decades before Asian hate shockingly gripped our nation, he moved to the US on his 6th birthday. As a Southern California resident, he grew up in a strict, Catholic/Filipino home and dealt with the parental expectations of their son becoming a Doctor. At the age of 19, Joel opened up about his sexuality on MTV’s “True Life: I’m Coming Out.” After being featured on Advocate Magazine and getting national recognition from the LGBTQ+ and AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) community, Joel decided to pursue a career in entertainment instead of becoming a doctor. In an interview he stated, “There’s more than one way to save a life; and telling our stories of struggle can help save the lives of others.” Joel produced shows such as FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen” and quickly became a young Executive Producer for NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” He worked with production companies in the Philippines and China to launch their own version of the hit weight loss competition series. After 10 years with “The Biggest Loser,” Joel continued to Executive Producer shows such as ABC’s “Boy Band” and the student debt series “Going From Broke” Executive Produced alongside Ashton Kutcher. In his early 30’s, Joel began to battle with depression, anxiety and an alcohol addiction. He made the decision to spend 50 days away from entertainment so he can seek help in a rehabilitation facility in Ventura, CA. That experience not only helped Joel recover from his struggles with addiction but he also fell in love with mental health. Joel then launched a free mental health program called Change Your Algorithm. It gained a community of thousands across the globe especially since many were seeking free mental health support during the pandemic. “CYA” offers its services online on changealgorithm.com where mental health classes are lead by certified therapists. Its services were quickly recognized across the globe which led to partnerships with the Silicon Valley education technology company Chegg as well as Ameriprise Financial Firm. CYA has been featured on FOX, ABC and Forbes. As a partner with Chegg, Joel also hosts their student mental health show titled “Breaking the Stigma” where he interviews everyday students to discuss their struggles with mental health. Today, Joel is an Executive Producer for LeBron James’ SpringHill Company as they work on launching a special on Stop Asian Hate. The project, titled “Recipe for Change,” will be released on June 16th through YouTube Originals. In only 90 seconds, Julia Scotti blew us away on America’s Got Talent. We talk about just how hard it is to be funny and make an impression in that short amount of time, auditioning for clubs in the 80s, taking a break from comedy and coming back even stronger, and of course, I make her share some horror stories from hell gigs. Speaking with someone who has their finger on the pulse of the entire whisky industry is always a treat and Susannah Skiver Barton is always that someone for Joshua and Jason. Erudite and insightful as well as thoughtful and funny spending any time with SSB (as the boys affectionately refer to her!) is time very well spent. In their conversation they discussed how 2020 severely impacted the whisky industry, what needs to be done to make sure we encourage more women and people of color to join us in our whisky circles, and predict what lies ahead in 2021. And they certainly shared a few laughs along the way. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing

From Teaching Tolerance: "White privilege is—perhaps most notably in this era of uncivil discourse—a concept that has fallen victim to its own connotations. The two-word term packs a double whammy that inspires pushback. 1) The word white creates discomfort among those who are not used to being defined or described by their race. And 2) the word privilege, especially for poor and rural white people, sounds like a word that doesn’t belong to them—like a word that suggests they have never struggled. This defensiveness derails the conversation, which means, unfortunately, that defining white privilege must often begin with defining what it’s not. Otherwise, only the choir listens; the people you actually want to reach check out. White privilege is not the suggestion that white people have never struggled. Many white people do not enjoy the privileges that come with relative affluence, such as food security. Many do not experience the privileges that come with access, such as nearby hospitals. And white privilege is not the assumption that everything a white person has accomplished is unearned; most white people who have reached a high level of success worked extremely hard to get there. Instead, white privilege should be viewed as a built-in advantage, separate from one’s level of income or effort." "Systemic Racism includes the policies and practices entrenched in established institutions, which result in the exclusion or promotion of designated groups. It differs from overt discrimination in that no individual intent is necessary. It manifests itself in two ways: institutional racism: racial discrimination that derives from individuals carrying out the dictates of others who are prejudiced or of a prejudiced society structural racism: inequalities rooted in the system-wide operation of a society that excludes substantial numbers of members of particular groups from significant participation in major social institutions." Jack Andraka was just a fifteen year old Maryland high school sophomore when he invented an inexpensive early detection test for pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers. After a close family friend died of pancreatic cancer, Andraka (then a ninth grader) became interested in finding a better early-detection diagnostic test. He learned that the lack of a rapid, low-cost early screening method contributed to the poor survival rate among individuals with pancreatic cancer. She sets the standard for smart comedy, and her timing and tongue-in-cheek edginess is why she continues to collect loyal fans in cities all over the world. Goldberg’s quick wit and playful stage presence is spreading like wildfire! Voted one of the “Top Five Funniest Lesbians in America,” CURVE Magazine raves, “One of the brightest star in a stellar comedy landscape!” The Irish Post writes, “Dana’s sharp, insightful observations are concealed behind an easy-going chatty style. This makes her one of a handful of comics able to transfer their work across the Atlantic.” The Advocate.com named Goldberg one of the top three LGBT comedians in the country. Goldberg started her comedy career in 2003 in front of 650 people in a sold out theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seven months into her career she was invited to Scotland by Emmy Award Winning writer Paul Wagner to perform with 13 other American comedians as part of the US Comedy Invasion at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. After returning to the states, Goldberg began competing in festivals and competitions all over the country. She was one of five national finalists to perform in the “Wendy’s Good Taste Comedy Challenge” produced by HBO and TBS in Las Vegas, Nevada as part of The Comedy Festival. In 2005 Goldberg was chosen out of thousands of comedians to participate in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. In three short years, she was invited to New York City to share the stage with powerhouse comedians Roz G, Laurie Kilmartin and Judy Gold for the 17th Annual Comedy Hour at Caroline’s On Broadway on behalf of the Ms. Foundation and Gloria Steinem. Since her explosive start, Goldberg has performed in clubs and theaters all over the country, graced two national magazine covers, and performed in 23 states and 7 countries. In 2006, just three years after she stepped onto the stage for the first time, Goldberg put on a producer’s hat and started the Annual Southwest Funnyfest in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each year Goldberg hosts the night of comedy to help benefit New Mexico AIDS Services (NMAS). She brings the best national female headlining comics to the Land of Enchantment for a night of non-stop, no holds barred, side splitting comedy. Since its inception, the Funnyfest has helped to raise close to $30,000 for NMAS and has brought in over a dozen comedians from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Comedy Central, Late Night With Craig Ferguson, Last Comic Standing, and Comics Unleashed. In the summer of 2009, Goldberg starred in her comedy special “One Night Stand Up: Episode 4” on the LOGO network; filmed at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Later that year she recorded her debut DVD “Hot And Bothered: Dana Goldberg Live” in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Emmy award winning comedian David Brenner raves, “One of the best ways to beat the recession is with laughs, and Dana Goldberg offers you one of your best chances to get some in her debut DVD.” After moving to Los Angeles in the fall of 2009, Goldberg found a new comedy home and it wasn’t long before she was headlining nights at world famous clubs like The Laugh Factory and the LA Improv. Goldberg continues to combine her gift of humor with humanitarian efforts raising over three million dollars to fight HIV/AIDS and joins LGBT communities and organizations across the country to raise national awareness in the fight for equality. Since joining the Human Rights Campaign family in 2009, Goldberg has headlined comedy nights, hosted, and assisted in live auctions for HRC events across the country in more than a dozen cities. In addition to her hilarious comedy and side-splitting performances, Goldberg has shared the national stage with President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Shonda Rhimes, Jennifer Hudson, Lady Gaga, Kathy Griffin, and Portia de Rossi just to name a few. As the youngest child in a single parent household run by a Jewish mother in which two of three kids are gay, Goldberg helps keep most of the comedy venues and half of the psychotherapists in the country in business.
