Will his destination be decided by fit, money, or an unexpected twist? To wrap up the news, we break down trade rumors, like the Royals and Reds discussing a Brady Singer-for-Jonathan India swap, and surprising moves, such as the Mets acquiring Jose Siri and the Cubs designating Adbert Alzolay for assignment. Wrapping up their three game series against the Mariners yesterday afternoon, the Astros take one out of the two from Seattle and now head on the road up to Cleveland to take on the Guardians in their final series of the regular season. Finishing out the last game 8-1 here at home in Minute Maid, the Astros fanbase gives a standing ovation to Alex Bregman as the Astros close out the game. Entering into next season as a free agent, many begin to wonder, have we seen Alex Bregman's last game here in Houston as an Houston Astro?
Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show with Ross to discuss the Astros securing their fourth consecutive American League West title with Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The Astros are now locked into the AL's No. 3 seed in the Wild Card Series. The final regular-season home game Wednesday afternoon saw Alex Bregman start at third base. However, in the fourth inning, manager Joe Espada removed Bregman from the game to receive an ovation from the fans at Minute Maid Park in what could be his final regular-season home game with the Astros. "I thought it was a nice moment," McTaggart said. "This could be it... It will be weird next year if [Bregman] won't be here." The Astros selected Bregman with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 MLB draft, with Bregman making his debut a year later. As a two-time All-Star who helped the Astros earn their first two World Series championships, Bregman has "taken on a huge leadership role." Bregman is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and while general manager Dana Brown has said he will engage agent Scott Boras with talks of an extension, "it's hard to imagine [Bregman's] going to stay with the Astros," especially with the organization's history of not retaining homegrown players, such as Carlos Correa and George Springer. The Astros final series of the regular season starts Friday in Cleveland, and Yordan Alvarez will not be with the team. Alvarez is recovering from a sprained right knee, and even if he returns in time for the Wild Card Series, he will most likely not play left field for perhaps the entire playoff run. "They do have a whole week to rest him." The best-of-three AL Wild Card Series begins Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, and McTaggart expects Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown and Yusei Kikuchi to lead the postseason rotation in that order. "That's a pretty tough 1-2-3."

Matt and Ross also predict how many penalties Texans offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil will have against the Jacksonville Jaguars, talk with University of Houston Cougars football head coach Willie Fritz about looking to bounce back from a shutout loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats, ask Dr. Roto to cure their fantasy football ailments, break down UNLV's NIL controversy and more.

Houston Astros reliever Caleb Ferguson joins The Matt Thomas Show ahead of a weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Minute Maid Park. The Astros sent Minor League pitcher Kelly Austin and $750,000 in international bonus money to the New York Yankees for Ferguson prior to the MLB trade deadline on Tuesday. "I'm excited to be in a place that is in contention to play in October," Ferguson said. The reliever was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014 and made his debut in 2018. Ferguson began this season with the Dodgers before being traded to the Yankees during spring training. He holds a 5.13 ERA through 33.3 innings across 42 appearances with one save this season. Ferguson details how he found out he got traded to Houston, how he transitioned from a starter to a reliever, recovering from Tommy John surgery twice and more.

Yusei Kikuchi will appear on the mound for the Astros for the FIRST time Friday night at MMP!
So much to discuss after the trade deadline! Let's get into it. Scott and Kim will be doing an event in LA with the LA County Dept of Public Health Peer Resource Center on Thursday, August 15th - sign up at the link in our bio! Then, we welcome JJ Wetherholt to the AIB Cinematic Universe (thank you to listener Paul Kuo for the tip!) and chat exciting Asians in 2025 news. The trade deadline was chaotic as always! The high: Tommy Edman to the Dodgers. The low: Yusei Kikuchi to the Astros. The shock: a lot of DFAs over the past few months. But a tie at the top of the Asians in Baseball team leaderboards! Quick injury report, but not without a big L. Christian Yelich avoids back surgery but will miss time to rehab, Bo Bichette returns to the IL, and Kodai Senga exits his season debut with a high grade calf strain that will take him out for the rest of the year. In position player news, we get into the Cardinals new HR celebration, Masataka Yoshida's strong showing, Seiya Suzuki's interpreter is fired, and Kyle Higashioka receives a replica Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of his grandfather, and we discuss the history behind it. In pitching news, Joey Cantillo makes his long-awaited debut (though against the Phillies), Bryan Woo leaves his last start but isn't expected to miss time, and Sean Manaea is dealing with a season high 11SO. And finally, Ohtani Talk. Don't worry about this man. He's still securely in MVP talks despite only being an DH, is predicted to make over $100 million in endorsement deals this year, and hits a homer at Minute Maid Park that leaves even Astros fans speechless. Lance McCullers TJ/ Flexor Tendon surgery shoulder issues The team has “pulled back” on McCullers' rehab progression with what manager Joe Espada described as “soreness in his arm,” intensifying Houston's need for rotation help at the July 30 trade deadline. “He's just not feeling well after his bullpens and his throwing programs,” Espada said on Tuesday. “He's going to be no-throw for a few days until we sit back down and re-evaluate how we're going to move forward.” Ben Joyce ANAHEIM -- Don't blink. You might just miss one of Ben Joyce's fastballs. Joyce has been lighting up radar guns yet again this season, including uncorking a 104.5 mph fastball in a scoreless seventh inning of the Angels' 6-5 win over the Mariners in 10 innings on Friday, the hardest pitch thrown by any pitcher this season. “I've been feeling really good, but I didn't really think anything of it at the time,” Joyce said. “I was trying to go out there and get some outs. But yeah, overall, the body felt great and everything felt really good.” There's no doubt about it,” Washington said. “He's growing, man. He's starting to believe in himself and his ability to throw the ball over the plate. If he can do that, he's going to be a real good one.” Whitely #1 to #21 MLB.com Feb 2024 Whitley, the 6-foot-7-inch right-hander who was Houston's first-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, has thrown only 267 innings in his Minor League career thanks to a suspension, a series of injuries, including Tommy John surgery two years ago and a lat injury last season. Whitley said the TrackMan data collected Friday provided promising information about his arsenal. “Everything looked really good,” he said. “[Pitch] shapes were good. I threw a slider with almost 25 inches of horizontal break [Friday]. I don't know how accurate that is, but it was good to see. Yeah, stuff's right back to where it was. Got up to 98 [mph] in November, so velocity is still there and I'm bouncing back health-wise and not getting too sore.” “I've gone through so much the last three years,” he said. I feel like I've attained so much knowledge on the pitching side. Last year Whitley pitched for Triple-A Sugar Land and went 1-2 in eight appearances with a 5.70 ERA. He posted a solid strikeout rate, fanning 32 batters in 30 innings. But he missed the back half of the season with a lat strain. The towering righty revamped his routine this offseason, hoping an off-the-mound overhaul would make him a regular at Minute Maid Park. Connecting the MLB Dots River Ryan Dodgers Dot #1: MLB teams are purchasing damaged goods. Whether college coaches can't teach /do not wont to teach, doesn't change reality. These 2 hurlers are doppelgängers for what MLB is purchasing. Dot #2: MLB takes these damaged hurlers, places them on minor league teams for purpose of Development (see Damon Oppenheimer quote). But just like college, there is no teaching /no development to repair the damaged goods, only focus - Velo /Spin. Dot #3: Takes us to the Show, see Dodgers analysis below - absolute mess. As there is also no teaching/development in the Show, only focus - Velo/Spin, the hurlers remain damaged goods Dot #4: To solve any problem one needs to understand what caused the problem. If they do not recognize they're purchasing damaged goods, they're wasting their breath. More to the point, if they all believe - Wake Forest to Dodger Land - this throwing motion is the only way to maximize velocity they're sadly misguided and misinformed. Waldrep elbow injury braves #2 prospect Waldrep has made two starts in the big leagues in 2024, giving up 13 runs over seven innings, so he'll look to find a groove with Gwinnett in order to potentially get another shot with Atlanta down the road. Severino has pitched to a 3.78 ERA and logged 109 ⅔ innings. Phil Mushnick Saturday, the Mets beat the Marlins, 1-0, despite Carlos Mendoza, who was mentored by Boone. After six, Mendoza pulled Luis Severino who had allowed just two hits. On SNY, Gary Cohen offered a weak explanation: Severino was about to face the decisive “third time through the order.” As if both Cone, 25 years ago, and Don Larsen, in 1956, should have been yanked after six. Besides, with a lineup loaded with .215 batters, the Marlins all become Rod Carew come the seventh inning .203 .239 .230 .214 .213 .231 .249 .243 .245 Bigger Stronger ? Tanner Houck The All-Star pitcher finished the first half with a 2.54 ERA through 19 starts. On Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, he pitched one inning in the All-Star Game, Before the break, manager Alex Cora suggested they would reorganize the rotation to give Houck extra time off, Houck's Monday start means he won't have pitched more than an inning since July 11, giving him 10 days between starts. Houck is already at 117 innings, but Cora said they think Houck's physicality puts him in a good spot to carry him through the season. They're not willing to address, nothing changes Yes, The game has changed - Phil Mushnick We've lately tuned in to Mets telecasts to hear that their bullpen is exhausted, as if that's a matter of bad fortune as opposed to managerial design. So Thursday, the Mets led the Nationals, 5-0, after six, when Carlos Mendoza brought in new guy Phil Maton, who made one, two, three with two strikeouts on 10 pitches. And then he was pulled. In a 7-0 final, Mendoza used five pitchers. Why? I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

If he can do that, he's going to be a real good one.”Whitely #1 to #21 MLB.com Feb 2024 Whitley, the 6-foot-7-inch right-hander who was Houston's first-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, has thrown only 267 innings in his Minor League career thanks to a suspension, a series of injuries, including Tommy John surgery two years ago and a lat injury last season.Whitley said the TrackMan data collected Friday provided promising information about his arsenal.“Everything looked really good,” he said. “[Pitch] shapes were good. I threw a slider with almost 25 inches of horizontal break [Friday]. I don't know how accurate that is, but it was good to see. Yeah, stuff's right back to where it was. Got up to 98 [mph] in November, so velocity is still there and I'm bouncing back health-wise and not getting too sore.”“I've gone through so much the last three years,” he said. The towering righty revamped his routine this offseason, hoping an off-the-mound overhaul would make him a regular at Minute Maid Park.Connecting the MLB DotsRiver Ryan Dodgers Dot #1: MLB teams are purchasing damaged goods. Whether college coaches can't teach /do not wont to teach, doesn't change reality. These 2 hurlers are doppelgängers for what MLB is purchasing.Dot #2: MLB takes these damaged hurlers, places them on minor league teams for purpose of Development (see Damon Oppenheimer quote). But just like college, there is no teaching /no development to repair the damaged goods, only focus - Velo /Spin. Dot #3: Takes us to the Show, see Dodgers analysis below - absolute mess. As there is also no teaching/development in the Show, only focus - Velo/Spin, the hurlers remain damaged goodsDot #4: To solve any problem one needs to understand what caused the problem. If they do not recognize they're purchasing damaged goods, they're wasting their breath. More to the point, if they all believe - Wake Forest to Dodger Land - this throwing motion is the only way to maximize velocity they're sadly misguided and misinformed.Waldrep elbow injury braves #2 prospect Waldrep has made two starts in the big leagues in 2024, giving up 13 runs over seven innings, so he'll look to find a groove with Gwinnett in order to potentially get another shot with Atlanta down the road.Pitchers are better than ever MLB Team ERA2024 #1 3.21 50% teams 4.00 +29th Dodgers 4.67 $700mm Oh2014 #1 3.0330% teams 4.00+1984#1 3.1131% 4.00+1974#1 2.954% 4.00+1353 pitchers during a July stretch: 45% 3.80+Severino: The right-hander had a rough start in Pittsburgh near the close of the first half that caused his ERA to balloon, but otherwise was consistent for the Mets in providing both length and quality. And then he was pulled. In a 7-0 final, Mendoza used five pitchers. Why? I'll hang up and listen to your answer.
Houston Astros manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for left-handed starter Yusei Kikuchi. Rookie starter Jake Bloss was scratched ahead of Monday's 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Minute Maid Park. At the game's conclusion, it was announced that Bloss, along with rookie outfielder Joey Loperfido and No. 13 prospect Will Wagner, were being sent to the Blue Jays for the 33-year-old Kikuchi. "It's not easy. It's part of the business," Espada said. "We really need this injection of someone who we've seen for years get deep in games, save our bullpen, and give us an opportunity to win every day." While Kikuchi hasn't been consistent most of this season (0-4 with a 7.75 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in his last eight starts), Espada believes the Astros coaching staff can help Kikuchi be more efficient. "I'm confident we're going to make those adjustments and make him a better pitcher." Espada also says Justin Verlander and Luis Garcia are both making a "huge step forward" in returning from injury and comments on the Astros preparing for the last stretch of the season. "This is when you start seeing the character and makeup of your team."

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show after the Houston Astros concluded their .500 road trip with Wednesday's 8-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. With the Los Angeles Angels sweeping the Seattle Mariners, the Astros take the lead in the AL West. Seattle's "offense is so bad," so the division race "is very much wide open" for the Astros, McTaggart said. The Astros are returning to Minute Maid Park to host the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Astros schedule is "not getting any easier," so "they just got to worry about the division at this point." The MLB trade deadline is approaching on July 30, and the Astros have areas of concern that could be addressed through a deal. "If they don't" get a pitcher, "then something drastically has gone wrong." However, McTaggart says there are some "untouchables" when it comes to trade capital within the Astros organization, specifically Jacob Melton, A.J. Blubaugh and Brice Matthews. "These teams want young value."

During the conversation, news breaks that Jose Altuve will miss the All-Star Game. Altuve would "rather just stay home and heal up for the second half" of the season. McTaggart also discusses the latest updates on Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers Jr. and more.
