This week is Part 2 of an incredibly actionable conversation with Christopher McDonald, a Talent Booker who has worked with everyone from high-profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 yet, you should definitely check it out. Christopher has booked, produced and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series and comedy sketch shows, and has been there since Day 1 booking talent for Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory, which is where he and I met when I was working with Tom as a client at VaynerTalent. In last week’s part 1 of the conversation, we talked about his background working in Hollywood—expectations vs. reality, how he booked the biggest entertainment industry names, and how it really works behind the scenes. He also gave valuable tips and insights on networking, including the biggest mistake people make, as well as strategies for booking your show and landing dream guests. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at the launch and growth strategies of Impact Theory. This week, in Part 2, we talk about all things pitching, and Christopher even shares the invaluable advice he got directly from Oprah herself on what standard she uses to book her own guests. This episode is definitely one you’ll want to take notes on! On Ep. 155, we cover: The A-to-Z of effective pitching: What to include, how long it should be, the tone you should take, and more Tips for effectively getting your foot in the door (but not literally!) Your one-sheet: What it is, why you need one, and what to include The big no-nos to avoid: What will get your pitch rejected immediately The one critical step you can’t skip in the pitching process Factors you need to consider when booking your show Handling rejection and why you shouldn’t take it personally, when to shoot your shot to book major guests, and more! I am very excited about this week’s and next week’s episodes because this is an incredibly valuable and actionable two-parter with a guest who is world-class at what he does and these are skill sets you’re going to need no matter what you do in life. As I’ve been growing this show and looking to take Beyond Influential to the next level, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I know in my network who are master networkers—they build long-lasting relationships with people at all levels in a way that is not purely transactional, and they do it in a way that feels very real and authentic. I met this week’s guest, Christopher McDonald, when I was working with Tom Bilyeu as my client at VaynerTalent; he’s been an integral part of Tom’s brand and the launch and strategy of both Inside Quest and Impact Theory, which we get into in this Part 1. Christopher is a Talent Booker with almost two decades of experience and an extensive network of connections and relationships. He has worked with everyone from high profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. And for what Christopher does as a talent booker, you need to have very strong relationships but also a very strong creative and strategic eye. Christopher has booked, produced, and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series, and comedy sketch shows. Christopher helped launch The Kelly Clarkson Show (NBC), Tavis Smiley (PBS), the second coming of The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS/Tribune), It’s Not You, It’s Men with Tyrese & Rev Run (OWN), Post Malone's Worldwide Celebrity Pong League (Facebook Watch), and Demi Lovato’s project (Quibi), and he has been with Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory from the very beginning. Normally no one likes a name-dropper, but I specifically told Christopher to please namedrop in this conversation because he’s worked with people like Prince, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Alicia Keys, John Legend... you get the picture. I love to introduce you to the people you should know on Beyond Influential, because while the public usually pays attention to the “face” of the brand, there are always talented people behind these people that make it all possible. On Part 1 of this conversation, we cover a lot of juicy topics: Christopher’s career evolution: From journalism to music booking to launching Impact Theory Working in Hollywood: Expectations vs. reality How he booked the biggest talent in Hollywood: What he loved, his approach, and the not-so-glamorous moments All things networking: Tips, insights, and the biggest mistake people make The launch of Impact Theory & its current growth strategies How to book your show & strategies for landing dreams guests Why you want “lightning in a jar” moments in your interviews, how to take your show to the next level, & more! And you are not going to want to miss Part 2 next week which is all about the ins and outs of pitching, advice he received from Oprah herself about booking, and more! These are both bookmark episodes for sure! Don't want to miss an episode (or valuable free resources!)? James Orsini is the President of The Sasha Group, an educational, consulting, and marketing services firm under its umbrella company, the VaynerX. James works alongside Gary Vaynerchuk, its CEO and serial entrepreneur. The Sasha Group runs as a consultancy on the front-end, and an agency in the backend. James has held previous positions as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Integration Officer for VaynerMedia, a digital agency with social at its core. He has proven himself as a great leader and has authored several business articles including Agency of the Future, Let Leaders Lead, Guided Exploration, and Practitioners Practice. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: How his entrepreneurial journey began The difference between a delegator and a facilitator The importance of positioning The need for structure in building an empire The origin behind his nickname, Jimmy The Pencil How James uses social media in his favor, personally and business-wise Leveraging podcasts to drive engagement What they’ve done for Gary to become more than just the social media guy Putting together the Eisenhower Matrix to execute their ideas What strategies worked and what didn’t work Episode Highlights: Delegation vs. Facilitation Delegation is having somebody do what it is that you should do or can do. Facilitation is taking the time to understand what people do well, and then connecting them with other people who have that need. The Importance of Positioning Positioning is very important because the most value comes when everybody feels like they're a winner at the table. It's not when one walks away being the loser, and one walks away being the winner. We find value when everybody walks out of the room and feels like they've won. Therefore, positioning is very important in negotiations, in client-agency relationships, in boss and staff relationships, and in business in general. Establishing VaynerX as a Holding Company In order for you to be a $500-million integrated, independent, international communications company, you're going to have to be more than a social media advertising company. You need a structure when you're growing an empire. As a result, VaynerX became the holding company and Sasha Group is under this VaynerX umbrella. There needs to be a clear head at the top of it, with a vision to take it forward. The Bible says that without a vision, the people perish. So the same thing holds for a company. Gary is the social media guy but you can't be $500 million being the social media guy so he had to be more than that. So he worked hard on it. He acquired companies, spun off a tech company from his media department, and started a new company. On the day he announced The Sasha Group, they had 4,700 inquiries in 48 hours. He also acquired a company and birthed Vayner commerce. Now, he's got Vayner Speakers and VaynerTalent. In this episode co-host Sam Hysell dives into social media strategies artists can tap into. Sam is a co-founder and managing partner of NOX Media, a digital marketing company that helps artists take their careers to the next level by quickly growing fanbases online. Prior to launching a music marketing agency, Sam has been helping grow different companies in and out of the music industry for the past 5 years. Most recently, prior to co-founding NOX, Sam was a Brand Strategist at VaynerTalent, a company owned by Gary Vaynerchuk, a true social media OG. VaynerTalent replicated the same approach Gary Vee used to grow his personal brand into the millions of engaged followers online. While there Sam helped the South African House music sensation Black Coffee develop from an underground DJ to a massive commercial success selling out major venues around the world, and entrepreneur Tom Bilyeu go from under 100k followers to 2 million. Today NOX works with different record labels, management companies, artists, brands and entrepreneurs to help them build their fanbase online, and drive results around key initiatives like driving streams or selling tickets to upcoming shows. As always never hesitate to leave a review or reach out to @musicbusinesspodcast Instagram with any feedback or ideas. Brandon Hatcher works for Gary Vaynerchuk in the VaynerTalent division of VaynerMedia. Brandon is a (self taught) videographer on the team helping other individuals produce the GaryVee content model. In our conversation we chat what it’s like to work at Vayner, the company culture and what Gary is like off camera, how his content model works and more. We also dive into his time pre-Vayner where he took some of Tai Lopez’s courses, traveled all over the US attending different conferences and meeting many successful entrepreneurs, how he grew his personal Instagram to over 30,000 followers and tips he has for you to be successful on Instagram today. This was a really fun episode to record, Brandon is a great guy and I think you’re going to get a ton of value from this episode. One of the most common questions I get when it comes to building a personal brand is if it is necessary to hire a videographer specifically for social media and personal brand content. The next question after that is almost always, "How do I find one?" I have experience now on both sides of the aisle. I worked closely with videographers at VaynerMedia on Team Garyvee, on VaynerTalent, and with my solo personal brand clients. I have now also worked closely with videographers for my own personal brand. That brings me to this week's interview is with Mason Tompkins, who is a videographer, editor, photographer, and creator. Mason works with corporate and personal brands to create content and he's currently working with the brand, K-Swiss. Not only that, but Mason is someone who has actually worked with me through a few different iterations of my business (and he might be the only one who's done this). We worked together on VaynerTalent, when I was still at Vaynermedia, and we've worked together on other clients since then. Mason has also been helping me with some of my own projects for my own brand, and it's been exciting to have him along for that ride. This interview was a great honest conversation that gives you a peek at what it's like behind the scenes as a videographer in this personal brand space. On this episode, we cover: Do you need a videographer for your personal brand? Finding & hiring a videographer Videographer pricing Creating the best type of content for your brand The difference working with personal brands vs. brands & more! Basics Of LifeIn this episode I am having a conversation with Zyykirrah Casado about the Basics of Life. I didn't edit this episode at all. Before you listen, let me be clear of one thing. My stance on this topic is 100% hypothetical. The original thought was what if I wasn't good at anything in life except, helping people understand the basics of life. I'm not a great speaker, I'm not good looking, I'm not a good businessman, I'm not a optimist. I'm simply great at helping people identify with the basics of life. As I meet more people around the globe I tend to think extreme thoughts and this is my latest. Welcome to Permission to Leap - a podcast exploring the stories of people who have brought their visions to life. Each week, I will speak to an inspiring guest and navigate the process they took to take the leap in their own lives, from the day that they first committed to the day they landed on the other side. Permission to Leap is the spark that will push you to believe in your dreams again and make them your reality. Today’s guest is Brittany Hoffman. Brittany is a branding expert and growth strategy consultant for personal brands and businesses. She has worked with high profile business thought leaders like Gary Vaynerchuk, Bonin Bough, and Marie Forleo among others. Prior to taking on her own clients, she was a brand manager and growth hacker for Gary Vaynerchuk's personal brand, where she worked on content, distribution, optimization strategies, influencer marketing, and all things brand growth. She helped more than double Gary's audience across Facebook and Instagram. During her time on the team, she spearheaded the #AskGaryVee Book influencer campaign, finding 750 influencers to promote the book for free leading up to its release. First week sales of the book far and away outsold all other books on the market that week. After cutting her teeth on Gary's brand, she moved over to VaynerTalent, the personal branding arm of VaynerMedia, where she worked on strategy, growth, and content production for other notable personal brands. Brittany is a lawyer, who attended Georgetown Law and passed the bar exam in New York. She received her undergraduate degree at UCLA, where she graduated in three years. She lives in Los Angeles and loves travel, poker, and warm weather.
