Accomplished comic book and television writer Sabir Pirzada (Spirits of Vengeance, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight) joins me on today's episode to talk about his new Image Comics project The Horizon Experiment: The Sacred Damned. This is the second in a series of five one shots, designed as something akin to a tv pilot, each featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. I hosted writer editor Pornsak Pichetshote (Infidel, The Good Asian) and artist Terry Dodson (Uncanny X-Men, Harley Quinn) on last month about the first book in the series, The Manchurian, if you are interested in hearing more about the broad strokes of the endeavor (listen here.) The Sacred Damned has been billed as a Muslim John Constantine and it does not disappoint. It's particularly heavy on body horror and masterfully illustrated by Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin, Nullhunter.) Selfishly, I really want some high ordering on this book so this incredible duo can have the opportunity to develop it further. Sabir said we are "delving into the stuff of Muslim nightmares" so make sure to ask your local shop to pull it for you. From the publisher Celebrated TV writer SABIR PIRZADA and Eisner-winning creator MICHAEL WALSH present INAYAH JIBRIL, a Muslim John Constantine—a new type of exorcist re-examining modern horror for fans of THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH and KILLADELPHIA. On this new episode of THE POLITICRAT daily podcast Omar Moore is in conversation with Philadelphia City Commissioner and Chairman Omar Sabir on voting, voter education, misinformation and Black voters. Recorded on September 19, 2024. NOTE: Omar researched post-interview that Stacey Abrams won 84% of the Black male vote in 2022 in the Georgia gubernatorial election. In the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election she won 88% of the Black male vote. Ms. Abrams did in fact do considerable outreach to Black men in 2018 and 2022--contrary to what Commissioner Sabir asserts during the conversation. Here's one example in a Yahoo story dated October 11, 2022: Stacey Abrams: "I actually focused on Black male voters in 2018...I have had very intentional conversations with Black male voters. My conversations are grounded in the fact that I respect Black men. I respect their voting power. Their voting power is strong and as candidates we have to be respectful of that and intentional about it." On this episode of More Perfect Marketing, host David Baer is joined by branding and positioning expert Orly Zeewy to discuss the importance of understanding your target audience's needs and desires in order to create effective messaging. Orly Zeewy is an author, speaker, and your facilitator of lightbulb moments. Her superpower? She makes fuzzy clear. She turns generic messaging into clear marketing messages that help startups and early-stage companies cut through the noise so they can attract their ideal customers and scale fast. In addition to her consulting work, Orly is a popular speaker and guest on business podcasts. She has been interviewed on more than a dozen business podcasts including This Week with Sabir, Angel Invest Boston with Sal Daher and The ConsciousPreneur. She has lectured at Wharton and taught in The Close School of Entrepreneurship at Drexel University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Orly has been featured in Medium and her articles have been published in national publications such as The Marketing Journal, Smart Hustle and Lioness Magazine. Her book: Ready, Launch, Brand: The Lean Marketing Guide for Startups was published by Routledge in May 2021 and was the #1 new business book release on Amazon in April 2021. Included in this episode: - Common Mistakes with Brand Messaging: Startups often send out too much information without being clear on their message. Generic messaging is often a result of not understanding who the target audience is. - Importance of Homepage: A homepage is a crucial aspect of a brand's identity and must communicate why a user should be there. - Focusing on the Customer's Needs: Founders need to focus on the problem they need to solve for customers, not just their own needs. Specific messaging tailored to the audience will attract more of them. - Utilizing Surveys: Surveys are incredibly useful if the right questions are asked to the right people. There may be variations in questions asked to extract useful language and perspective. - Case Study: Summer Day Camp Redesign: The guest speaker shares insights from an online survey her team conducted for a summer day camp. They found that the camp was the place where small kids do big things. The messaging was centered around experiences and growth opportunities in a safe environment rather than the lake as they had previously thought. - Importance of Understanding the Market: "Build it and they will buy" is a flawed idea because it doesn't consider if people actually want what you're offering. Understanding the market, including where it is currently and what people are doing now, is crucial. - AppSumo Case Study: AppSumo is a marketplace where technology tools launch to find users. Many of these tools lack clarity on who they're serving, focusing only on what they do. - Differentiation for Startups: Startups have a blank slate but still need to figure out their unique selling points. Existing companies, especially in brick and mortar, have a harder time because of the abundance of options and competition from digital spaces. - Insights on Sales: To succeed in selling a product or service, it's crucial to connect with potential customers on their level. Passion is a key trait of founders, but they need to consider that others may not be as far along in the process. - Eugene Schwartz's "Breakthrough Advertising": The host reads a passage from "Breakthrough Advertising" by Eugene Schwartz, published in the 1960s, which emphasizes the importance of channeling and directing existing desires in copywriting. In this episode, the main conversation topics revolve around the world of entrepreneurship, conducting business using a scientific method, and mastering the ego to be a better business leader and to make better business decisions. Sabir Semerkant's background is in computer science, which he leverages to help businesses grow through marketing and customer acquisition strategies. He explains how it requires time, work, and commitment to develop a thriving business as an entrepreneur. In the course of running your business, you should develop the habit of routinely putting your theories to the test and making adjustments in response to the results of those tests. Entrepreneurs need a competitive edge and that's what Elzie and Sabir dive deep into this podcast episode. Growth hacking requires more than just being an entrepreneur; it requires a penchant for thinking outside the box. Tune in to find out how you can keep learning and exploring to grow and gain new skills, which will give you the drive and determination to get closer to your business goals.Episode Highlights:02:42 - You can learn it but the thing is, you do need to have that knack that gives you that edge, otherwise, you're going through the mechanics of entrepreneurship. You're not really thinking, I hate to use the phrase thinking out of the box. But you're not thinking out of the box you're thinking like, "Oh, you know what? I need to go through these 12 steps. I need to go through these six things. I need to do SEO optimization. I need to do this and that." You're going through the mechanics of it, but you cannot really think outside the box to really – how do you take a product that has no presence nobody knows about it to becoming a household name? That cannot be your basic marketing classes that you took. You have to have some interesting side of you that you think very differently in order to bring that product and make it a household name.06:50 - To me, I would never say I'm right. Ever. Like as soon as you say that, go like, "Oh, you know what? I was right about that five dollar coupon. Look at how many people came back." Don't do that to yourself. Don't ever do that. In every boardroom, every executive management boardroom, and everyone of those meetings, everybody looks at a north star person, right? The CEO is right. The CMO is right. The VP of Marketing is right. She is right because she is the VP of, whatever, product management, right? As soon as you do that, you're bound to fail 100%.12:16 - It's a lot of self-reflection. It's a lot of looking deeper into yourself to see, "Did this thing fail because we did the wrong things or did it fail because of what I did?" Because if you mistreated one of your top developers on the team - engineers - and the person is now just collecting a paycheck and doesn't care about anybody's success, your success or company's success, nothing, to them it's just a paycheck. They'll come in. They'll do the bare minimum that's needed. Did they turn into that person because of the way you treated them as a leader?Connect with ElzieWebsiteLinkedInEmailConnect with Sabir SemerkantLinkedInWebsite
As a leader, it's important to have a firm handle on your ego. On this micro episode, Sabir shares how he mastered his ego in business and as a leader. As an entrepreneur, there can be a lot of pressure to succeed and be the best. However, it's important to keep your ego in check and focus on your goals. When you allow your ego to run wild, it can lead to making rash decisions and taking unnecessary risks. Instead, focus on building an enduring business that will stand the test of time. By keeping your ego in check, you'll be able to make better business decisions and be a more effective leader.Episode Highlight01:02 - It's a lot of self-reflection, it's a lot of looking deeper into yourself to see did this thing fail because we did the wrong things or did it fail because what I did. As an entrepreneur, one of the most important things you can do is always question your assumptions and be willing to change your mind. This is what the scientific method is all about: constantly testing your hypotheses and then adapting based on the results. In business, this means that you should never blindly follow the "experts" or think that you are always right. Instead, always be willing to experiment and learn from your mistakes. This approach will help you stay flexible and agile, two essential qualities for any successful business.Episode Highlight:00:42 - To me, I would never say I'm right. Ever. Can entrepreneurship be taught? This is a question that Sabir tries to answer in this micro episode. He starts by talking about how there is no one formula for success when it comes to entrepreneurship. Instead, it is important to find your own path and what works best for you. He also talks about how entrepreneurship is not something that can be learned overnight. It takes time, effort, and dedication to build a successful business. Entrepreneurship can be a difficult and challenging journey, but it can be incredibly rewarding. With the right mindset and approach, entrepreneurship can be an extremely rewarding experience.
