Journalist Melissa Chan and cartoonist Badiucao created a highly accessible dystopian graphic novel that takes place in 2035. America has become proto-fascist and is at war with a techno-authoritarian regime in China. Chan and Badiucao join Ali Velshi for his latest installment of the Velshi Banned Book Club. "Serious topics about human rights and social issues needs to break into gamers, the geeks and the readers of comics," says Badiucao.

In 2013, a teenage boy lit the skirt of an agender teen asleep nearby on fire. They sustained major burns to their legs and the offending teen was charged as an adult -- over the wishes of the victim and their family. This true story is detailed in The 57 Bus by journalist Dashka Slater. With discrimination against trans persons becoming openly accepted in the U.S., Ali Velshi sits down with Slater in this episode of Velshi Banned Book Club.

Join the conversation by letting us know what you think about the episode! This month's selection is The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid. Published in 2022, The Last White Man is the fifth novel by the British Pakistani novelist and consultant Mohsin Hamid. Written as an extended allegory, it tells the story of an unnamed town in an unnamed country whose white inhabitants have all begun to change skin color from pale to brown. The novel explores themes of race and whiteness as constructs, loss and mourning, and conspiracy theories. The Last White Man is a thought-provoking and, sometimes, uncomfortable read, but it's definitely worth your time. We couldn't find out exactly why this particular book was banned but there are several obvious reasons why book banners might be keen on banning it. Read the book before passing judgement. It's slightly more than 200 pages so it's a quick read, but it'll stay with you long after the final page. Mentioned in this episode:  Velshi Banned Book Club: 'The Last White Man' by Mohsin Hamid - YouTubeSupport the showBe part of the conversation by sharing your thoughts about this episode, what you may have learned, how the conversation affected you. Volodymyr Vakulenko hid his journal beneath a tree in his yard. The pages detailed the Russian invasion of his home country, Ukraine. Vakulenko was afraid he would not live to see the manuscript published -- a fear that tragically came true. On this week's Velshi Banned Book Club, Ali Velshi speaks with Ukrainian author and journalist Yaruslov Trofimov, who wrote No Country For Love, which explores Russia's attempts to wipe out Ukrainian literature and history.

Even with both chambers of Congress at his disposal, Donald Trump continues to unilaterally bulldoze his way through government, consolidating power. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will confront the barrier to entry that surrounds poetry and tear it down by closely examining a masterclass in poetic storytelling:  “Brown Girl Dreaming” by Jacqueline Woodson. "Brown Girl Dreaming" follows Woodson's childhood split between segregated Greenville, South Carolina, and New York City. “Brown Girl Dreaming” is a beautiful look at childhood, identity, and racism in America. The Poetry Foundation's Young People's Poet Laureate from 2015 to 2017, Woodson proves that poems tell more in a few turns of phrase than many novels tell us in an entire chapter.

There is one thing that connects the disparate generations of Americans: books. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will look at two novels that don't just capture the spirit of growing up but punctuate chapters in an American student's life: “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. These books are frequently assigned in English classrooms across the county, and if they're not, they're passed from friend to friend. They are rites of passage in their own right. These books don't share plot, characters, or scenery, but they both prove how serious childhood is, how painful growing up can be, and just how "adult" a topic a young person can handle.
