Victoria Banks joins us for this week's new episode of Stories Behind the Songs! Victoria is what some people in the music industry would call a “unicorn” - she writes her best stuff completely 100% (meaning all by herself), and she has several accolades to her name including the Canadian Artist and Songwriter of the Year.  Some of Victoria's cuts include “Saints and Angels” by Sara Evans, “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” by Mickey Guyton, and the one-and-only Reba McEntire's most recent single, “I Can't”, and she shares the story behind each one of these songs.  In this episode, we also talk about how her song, “Saints and Angels” was edited and used as a post-9/11 anthem, “daring to suck” in co-writes, building a decade-long collaborative relationship with Mickey Guyton, teaching at Belmont where she can “be there for the beginning” of a student's songwriting career, and getting that Reba cut with “I Can't” 18 years after it was put on hold and seeing it debuted on The Voice. Victoria plays a verse and chorus of “Saints and Angels”, “I Can't”, and an emotional rendition of “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” There's so much good advice for aspiring songwriters in this one.. Thanks so much to Victoria for sharing some of her wisdom. Let's get into it! In her multi-decade tenure as a songwriter on Nashville's Music Row, Victoria has had cuts by over 100 artists, including her award-winning “Saints and Angels” for Sara Evans, Johnny Reid, Carley Pearce and more. We discuss: - what her day to day life is like being an award winning, Music Row Songwriter - How she maintains time for herself to make room for creativity, even amidst the chaos - How she turns off the constant distractions to trust her inner Source to come up with songs - How to listen within in order to get the best musical results - How she's learned to constantly pivot in the ever-changing music industry, while still maintaining her songwriting integrity - Finding the time to be quiet and what that does to propel your songwriting - How therapy has helped her “take the hard” out of her songwriting process, and how you can too! - We talk about your Creative Source, imposter syndrome, anxiety in co-writes and performing and how this Award-winning songwriter got through it all to see her dreams come to fruition and SO MUCH. Life is painful and impossible and breathtaking and beautiful. I have to write what I feel. That’s where Victoria Banks' third album Indigo comes from. "These songs aren’t written to fit a genre, or to meet an expectation of a sound,” she says. “They’re built from bare-bones midnight recording sessions in my attic. They’re things that I need to say."  Victoria’s list of accolades as an artist is long. Her self-produced, self-penned records When You Can Fly and Never Be the Same made her 2009’s most nominated female artist in Canadian country music, earned her the 2010 CCMA Female Artist of the Year award, and sent her out on tour with superstars Reba McEntire, Wynonna Judd, Lonestar, Randy Travis and Johnny Reid.  Now a staff songwriter at Nashville’s RareSpark Media Group, Victoria’s impressive catalogue of hits includes 3 cuts by Sara Evans including “Can’t Stop Loving You” (a duet with Isaac Slade of The Fray), and the ASCAP and SOCAN-award-winning “Saints & Angels.” She penned Jessica Simpson’s Billboard record-breaking country debut “Come On Over,” X Factor winner Tate Stevens' “Ordinary Angels,” One More Girl’s breakout hit “When It Ain’t Raining,” Doc Walker’s chart-topping “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” and Johnny Reid’s smash “Dance With Me,” for which Victoria was named 2010 CCMA Songwriter of the Year.

Our post-Thanksgiving program (Canadian Thanksgiving, that is) features two great Canadian acts from different ends of the stylistic spectrum. Victoria Banks is fresh off the release of Indigo, her third studio album, a collection of songs stemming from bare-bones midnight recording sessions in her attic. In addition to her own multi-award-nominated releases, Banks is a staff songwriter at Nashville’s RareSpark Media Group with a catalogue that includes hits for the likes of Sara Evans, Jessica Simpson, One More Girl, Doc Walker, and Johnny Reid As for The Meds, the PEI-based rock outfit has been touring the country on the back of their debut full-length, South America. Theirs is a sound that blends easily-accessible mainstream rock with a folky, poetic vocal style and plenty of substance. The album was co-produced by Matt Mays and Colin MacDonald of The Trews.

PART 1 of another cool REAL Country chat with the always fun Lee from Jetty Road talking about touring, life, and their stunning album "FAR AWAY PLACES" Here is some more info on Jetty Road: Paving your own destiny is a topic Australian act Jetty Road are quite familiar with. Their debut six years ago into the Australian music scene saw them make the bold decision only a few years later to branch out into the Northern hemisphere; a courageous step, which is now starting to pay big dividends. Jetty Road are now making waves in Canada and Europe as well as their home country Australia. But winning one of Australia's highest country music accolades in January 2010, the CMAA Award (Golden Guitar) for Best Group, was the icing on the cake. Identical twin sisters, Lee and Paula Bowman, Julian Sammut and Simon Ross are members of what is now being touted one of Australia's hottest acts. The four friends met whilst studying at Music College in Melbourne, Australia, and after a few years began writing and recording, releasing their debut album Full Circle in 2005, the follow up album, Dirt Roads City Lights in 2007, and their multi award winning album, Life at a Million Miles in 2009. And the figures are starting to stack up. Since releasing Full Circle, the band have had nine tracks appear in the Top 20 on Australian country radio, 7 of those in the top 10, with Million Miles staying the number 1 position for 6 consecutive weeks. Seven of the video clips for these tracks have appeared in the Top 10 on the CMC Top 30 chart (Country Music Channel) - three of them to the coveted #1 position, City Lights (2008), Million Miles (2009) and World Keeps Turning (2009). Along with strong chart success, Jetty Road have taken home many awards over the past few years, including their first Golden Guitar award at the CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia for Best Group / Duo in January 2010. That year, Jetty Road was also honoured with Album of the Year and Single of the Year nominations. They've also won other key country music awards including Australian Independent Artist of the Year, Australian Independent Album of the Year, Australian Independent Group/Duo of the Year, numerous Australian Country Music People's Choice Awards and the National Music Oz Award for Best Country Act. Most recently, their signing to On Ramp Records, one of Canada's premiere country music record labels, is their next significant achievement. They are the only non-Canadian act amongst an impressive Canadian country music artist roster including Victoria Banks, Shane Yellowbird and Jaydee Bixby. And while many may view the title of Jetty Road's fourth album, Far Away Places, as a reference to their penchant for globetrotting, it also reflects their musical journey into the unknown. On past albums, Jetty Road have written all of their own material, but their latest project sees a branching out with a number of notable co-writes, including George Canyon (Wrong), and Jason McCoy (I'm a Dreamer / Welcome to the Party). Opting to record their 4th album half way across the globe in Vancouver, Canada with producer Paul Shatto has also proven to be an exciting partnership. So, what's in store for Jetty Road in 2012 you ask? Stay tuned; it seems they may be in for one memorable ride..... http://www.JettyRoad.com REAL Country video editing by: Terence Sadler The YouTube channel for REAL Country is interactive!
