Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University. He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville. The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years. For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae. He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could. During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana. He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far. It hasn't slowed down for him since. From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework. If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example. Hit songwriter, Emily Weisband, joins Caroline for this episode of Get Real. When Caroline heard Emily's “Champagne & Sushi” she literally hit her knees and wept. She has never in her life felt more seen. She has lost 5 pregnancies and it is truly the saddest, most isolating, devastating experience, that you go through ALL ALONE as a woman. Yes of course your partner, family and friends are there and ache with you, but it's a heartbreaking solo journey. Emily wrote a song that captures every feeling a woman feels who goes through miscarriage. It's a true masterpiece. But that's what Emily does. To Caroline, and many others in the Nashville creative community, Emily is a musical genius. Her ability to capture raw human emotion and put it into song takes your breath away. She has written songs for Chris Young, Sheryl Crow, Anne Wilson, Jeremy Camp, Dasha, Danielle Bradbury, Lily Rose, Gabby Barrett, Camila Cabello, Hillary Scott, Noah Cyrus, Lauren Alaina, FGL, Sam Hunt, Dan & Shay, Old Dominion, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker to name a few. And with each song she writes, she lets the listener see themselves in the story, feel seen and a little less alone. It was so healing having such a raw real conversation with Emily all about the real, raw, often painful yet beautiful life experience. Born and raised in Arkansas, Evan grew up playing drums at his dads church in Fort Smith. He was the kid that would sit behind the drummer during church and soak in every detail and nuance. Once church let out, he'd jump up on the kit and play, until the next church service started a few hours later. Evan got his first drum set at the age of 8 and began serenading his whole family and neighborhood with punk rock beats and the sounds of the radio. After touring the country with his band The Exception, Evan decided it was time to move to Nashville, TN and attend Middle Tennessee State under the direction of Lalo Davila and Tom Giampietro. It was in college where Evan honed his craft and wanted to become a studio musician. Years later and having played on multiple #1 songs on the radio, Evan is now an in demand studio drummer. A few years back, Lauren Alaina recorded a terrific song entitled "Getting Good." The lyric expresses how we are prone to think about all that could go wrong or could be better and often miss out on all the goodness that is already surrounding us. In these days of global unrest and warring factions, it might seem that we are doomed. There is much to be concerned about, to be sure, but there is so much good to be found and shared. Living generously is a great way to be part of a brighter future!

The first single that Carly Pearce put out to radio as a solo artist was also her first #1 hit. That song, Every Little Thing, was written by this week's guest - the amazing and talented Emily Shackelton! In this episode, you'll hear how Emily grew up in a very small town in Minnesota surrounded by music. She was encouraged from a young age to pursue what she loves and quickly found out that it was songwriting. Emily tells us stories about how she doubted her career in Nashville many times but every time she did, she turned to her faith and the right doors were opened for her. After first moving to Nashville, Emily entered into a BMI songwriting competition and won! Emily also talks about the stories behind writing songs for ABC's hit television show “Nashville”, starting a professional relationship with Liz Rose, and writing many other songs for Carly Pearce. She has also written songs for Reba McEntire, Jennifer Nettles, Sara Evans, Jana Kramer, Cassadee Pope, Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton, David Cook, Seth Ennis and more. When I asked Emily what advice she would give her 8-year-old self, knowing what she knows now, she said “keep going and trust god”. So cool and so true. Emily has a lot of exciting things happening now with two brand new songs of her own released - “Beloved” and “Our God Sustains”. You gotta check those out – they're amazing. She also has many shows coming up and lots more cuts to keep an eye out for! As always, remember to subscribe/follow/like and support this podcast by hitting all of those buttons where you listen and spreading the word to your friends so others can hear it! We love sitting down with new songwriters and artists - and everyone else involved in the music business - to hear their stories and the support from you all is what allows us to keep going.
